Have Bournemouth pulled off one of the best summer deals?

When Tyrone Mings signed for Ipswich for £10,000 from Chippenham Town in 2012 reaction was muted, with very little expected from the 19-year-old.

He went on to make 16 appearances in his first full season, but it wasn’t until the following campaign that he really held down his first-team starting berth.

This was due in part to Aaron Cresswell’s move to West Ham United, which handed Mings the opportunity to step into his favoured full-back position. At 6ft. 5″, he is a formidable figure showing himself as equally adept at occupying a centre-back position.

Like a surprisingly high number of stars, he started off within the now famed Southampton academy. At the time the Saints were in League One and were forced to cut their youth team budget, which saw Mings slip through their fingers as a 16-year-old.

He went on to represent Bristol Rovers u18s, where his father worked at the time, before playing for Yate Town, impressing whilst there. He then moved on to local side Chippenham Town in 2012. At this point the 19 year old was juggling his playing time with his occupation as a mortgage advisor while also chasing trials to get back into the Football League system.

Here was a determined young man who was willing to work hard, ‘pay his dues’ and put himself out there again and again for another chance. He clearly had his head screwed on. Feet on the ground and realistic in his ambitions, little did he know that his big chance would come whilst on trial with Ipswich Town in 2012. After impressing, manager Mick McCarthy he sealed a transfer for just £10,000, plus a friendly against the Tractor Boys.

Given the recent move to Bournemouth for £8million, this measly sum. Having rejected a £3m bid from Crystal Palace last year, Ipswich had hoped to keep the squad together for a promotion push. Unfortunately for the South East side, they lost in the Championship play-off semi-final to fierce rivals Norwich City.

The £8million price tag could rise to as much as £11 million with various add-one and this sum could go a long way towards investing in the squad to chase a promotion winning campaign. Ipswich will view themselves as having got the better end of the deal but will it be good value for Bournemouth?

Whilst the figure paid has been scoffed at in many circles, this too could prove a good move for the Cherries. The Premier League new boys will want to continue their work ethic and passing style that has made them such an attractive team to watch. Tyrone Mings shares these attributes so will settle in beautifully.

And who knows, if this term goes well for the Bath born defender, then maybe his father Adie, who is currently a scout at Chelsea, will be able to pull some strings and convince the club to invest in the promising defender and bring him to Stamford Bridge.

West Ham fans react as club is linked with Stoke midfielder Joe Allen

According to reports in The Mirror, West Ham United manager David Moyes is keen to sign Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen during the January transfer window, and Irons fans have been quick to have their say on the rumour.

The Mirror says that Moyes wants to reshape his team next month in order to steer them away from the relegation zone, and the 27-year-old is said to be one of his top targets in the New Year.

Allen can play as either a deep-lying midfielder or in a more attacking role, and he has shown what a key player he is for the Potters with three goals and a further five assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for Mark Hughes’ men this term.

West Ham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the transfer link, and while one said “Joe Allen is better than all three of our CMs” with Pedro Obiang, Cheikhou Kouyate and Mark Noble struggling at times this season, another disagreed and said “we must aim higher”.

Newcastle supporters loved Christian Atsu’s performance vs West Ham

Newcastle United ended their run of nine English Premier League games without a win on Saturday, defeating West Ham United 3-2 at the London Stadium.

In a pulsating match from start to finish, the Magpies finally found the winning formula, even after falling behind early through a Marko Arnautovic strike.

Rafa Benitez’s side rallied and by the hour mark were 3-1 ahead thanks to Henri Saivet, Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu. Andre Ayew pulled one back for the home side but the Hammers couldn’t find an equaliser in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Newcastle fans were delighted with the performance, but more importantly the result. The three points ensured they ended the day climbing out of the relegation zone and up into 15th place.

Atsu, the scorer of the vital third goal, was singled out by fans as the team’s top performer, also assisting Diame for the side’s second of the day.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance…

Liverpool fans react as Everton close in on a £20m Theo Walcott deal

Liverpool’s arch-rivals Everton are reportedly on the verge of sealing a £20m deal to sign Arsenal winger Theo Walcott, and Reds fans have been quick to have their say on the potential transfer.

The Toffees have endured a tough campaign despite bringing in the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson on big-money deals during the summer, but it hasn’t put them off spending this month with Walcott on the verge of adding to the £27m arrival of Cenk Tosun from Besiktas.

The 28-year-old Gunners player has only played 63 minutes of Premier League football this season across six substitute appearances, with the north London outfit lying eight points behind Jurgen Klopp’s third-place side in the top flight standings.

Liverpool supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on Walcott to Everton, and while one said “suddenly Van Dijk looks a bargain”, another said “Everton have wasted so much money this season it’s unreal”.

Revealed: 73% of Everton fans would back swoop for Ezri Konsa

There’s something in the waters down at Charlton Athletic. Addicks academy products Joe Gomez and Ademola Lookman have stepped up to the Premier League with relative ease since joining Liverpool and Everton respectively, while former team-mate Ezri Konsa is now catching flirtatious glances from top flight sides.

Indeed, the Toffees have been strongly linked with the 20-year-old, but it appears the Merseyside outfit will no longer press ahead with plans to snap him up before next week’s transfer deadline.

According to our poll, however, that news will leave a significant chunk of Everton supporters somewhat disappointed. We asked them earlier this week whether they’d back a transfer swoop for Konsa and the response was a resounding yes, with 73% voting in his favour.

At this point, it’s unclear whether Everton will look to revive their interest at the start of the season, although they may find it hard not to if the Charlton youngster’s impressive form continues.

Bellamy claims Evra will fail to make impact at West Ham United

Patrice Evra made a surprise move on Wednesday when he joined West Ham United on a free transfer.

The Frenchman had been without a club since November after his contract was terminated by Marseille for an altercation with a fan.

Evra was caught on camera kicking a supporter prior to a Europa League game, and as a result, has been banned by UEFA from playing in European competitions until June 2018.

The left-back has been given an opportunity to revive his career thanks to West Ham.

Evra is already familiar with the Premier League having spent eight years at Manchester United, where he experienced plenty of success as part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.

The Frenchman won 10 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

In his final season before leaving Old Trafford for Juventus in 2014, Evra played under manager David Moyes, who is now in charge of the Hammers.

Former Premier League forward Craig Bellamy has put a dampener on the transfer by claiming that, at the age of 36, Evra could struggle at the London Stadium.

During Sky Sports’ broadcast of The Debate, the Welshman said:

“He hasn’t been the same player in the past four or five years. His last year at Juventus was really poor, and he isn’t the same player he was when he worked [under Moyes] four years ago.

“Age catches up with you, and he’s in that position. It’s a great move for him and his experience will be great for a club like West Ham, but I don’t believe they’re going to get much out of him playing-wise.”

Liverpool fans urge club to sign Marco Reus after latest Borussia Dortmund display

Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus scored a stunning winner for his side in their 1-0 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, and Liverpool fans have urged their club to sign the 28-year-old.

The Germany international was making just his third start of the season following his return from a cruciate ligament injury, and he certainly made a big impression in the Bundesliga encounter.

Former Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle laid the ball across the area for the attacking midfielder, and he took a touch before unleashing a shot that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Having lost Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona during the January transfer window, Jurgen Klopp could be looking for a replacement during the summer and the Anfield faithful appear to be backing a move for Reus.

Liverpool supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the German’s latest display, and while one said he is one of the ‘top 5 players in the world when he is 100% fit’, another said ‘I would still take him in a heartbeat’.

Leeds fans beg Paul Heckingbottom to start Samu Saiz against Derby

Leeds United attacking midfielder Samu Saiz returns from suspension for the club’s crucial Championship clash against Derby County at the Pride Park Stadium on Wednesday night, and Whites fans have begged Paul Heckingbottom to start the Spaniard.

The 27-year-old was arguably the Yorkshire outfit’s player of the season – he has nine goals and five assists in 25 matches in all competitions – before he was dismissed for spitting at an opponent in the FA Cup defeat against Newport County in Wales last month, and was subsequently handed a six-match ban.

United have sacked former boss Thomas Christiansen and replaced him with Heckingbottom since then, but they are in desperate need of a win in the east Midlands to reignite their play-off hopes as they currently lie eight points adrift of the top six with 14 league games left this term.

Leeds supporters were quick to have their say on Saiz’s potential inclusion against the Rams via social media, and while one said it would be “outrageous if he doesn’t start Saiz tonight”, another said “let him start and prove to us why we’ve kept faith in him”.

In Focus: Dawson could be calm presence at the back for Everton

Everton are keeping a close eye on West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson ahead of a potential summer move, according to The Sun.

What’s the word?

The Baggies’ chances of staying in the Premier League look bleak as they are rooted to the bottom of the standings, eight points adrift from safety.

With that in mind, The Sun reports that a host of first-team players could leave The Hawthorns, including Jonny Evans, Jay Rodriguez, Ben Foster and Dawson.

The newspaper adds that Everton, as well as Burnley and Crystal Palace, are keeping tabs on Dawson, who has been a West Brom player since his 2010 move from Rochdale.

The Toffees attempted to strengthen their defence last summer with the signing of Michael Keane from Burnley, but the team have still encountered problems.

[ad_pod ]

Is Dawson a good option?

The Englishman’s name may not carry the same gravitas as others, but Dawson has proven time and again that he is a reliable figure at the back.

The 27-year-old is versatile in that he can also play at right-back, but in the centre of defence is where he performs best.

If Everton were to nab his signature, they would get a calming presence, but Dawson can also be an asset when it comes to set pieces at the other end of the pitch.

The Merseyside outfit already have a handful of players vying for the centre-back position, including Keane, Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka, Mason Holgate and Ramrio Funes Mori.

In order to bring in a new man at the back, a few others may need to be shipped out.

Leeds fans delighted for youngster’s international success

Leeds fans are predicting big things from youth goalkeeper Will Huffer after the 19 year-old was called up to the England U20 squad.

The goalkeeping situation at Leeds has been pretty toxic this season, with Andy Lonergan reaching the end of his career and Felix Wiedwald’s move from Werder Bremen proving disastrous for all involved.

The future suddenly looks pretty bright for goalkeepers at Elland Road though, as Will Huffer and Bailey Peacock-Farrell have now both emerged as future number ones.

Peacock-Farrell has impressed in the first team with busy performances against Wolves and Reading, and Huffer has been in sensational form for Carlos Corberan’s U23 side this season.

Huffer has now been rewarded with a call-up to England’s U20 squad for their friendlies with Poland and Portugal. The teenager signed his first professional contract at Elland Road in December, and wants to follow in Peacock-Farrell’s footsteps by breaking into the first team.

Leeds fans have been showing their support for the youngster on Twitter, and some of the best reactions can be found below…
