Marnus Labuschagne said that the players felt Smith was set for a big innings
AAP09-Jul-2022Steven Smith’s closest batting ally has warned the floodgates could open again after he broke his 18-month Test century drought against Sri Lanka.Smith went to stumps unbeaten on 109 at the end of day one in Galle, helping put Australia in control of the second Test after a 134-run stand with Marnus Labuschagne.Without a century since January 2021, Smith was back to his classic best on Friday in a near faultless 212-ball display.”The boys said this morning when he rocked up to the ground, he was in the Smudge headspace and he looked locked in,” Labuschagne said.Related

Welcome to the Upside Down world, Sri Lanka
It showed. In control from the outset, Smith waited on loose balls from Sri Lanka’s bowlers as he punished anything full and hit it to the cover or long-on boundary. On one of the few occasions a ball beat Smith’s bat, the right-hander gave an immediate thumbs-up down the wicket to debutant Prabath Jayasuriya. But moments like that were few and far between. The vice-captain produced arguably the best two shots of the day, twice punching Jayasuriya past mid-on for four. Ten of his 13 boundaries came down the ground, as he got to the pitch of the ball well and controlled the game.Steven Smith plays through the leg side•AFP
Smith had maintained in recent months that his longest drought since his first Test ton in 2013 had not been playing on his mind. But the joy was evident to see when he brought up his century, driving Kasun Rajitha through the covers and raising his arms aloft after hugging team-mate Alex Carey.”With someone of his calibre, he almost never feels like he’s out of form.” Labuschagne, who also hit 104, said. “It’s just for him the standard he’s set is so high that when it drops a little bit, his expectations are still at that really high level.”He’s a very harsh critic on himself, having set a standard for Australia for the last eight or nine years. He’s always still hitting the ball well. It’s just confidence thing.”Getting that one today, I think is really going to open up the floodgates and we could have a really big next 10 Tests or so in the next year.”After admitting he had missed the pressure of batting on spinning wickets last month, Smith’s runs were desperately needed by Australia. Brought to the wicket at 70 for 2, the tourists would have found themselves in trouble if Smith had fallen early.Smith’s century brought him back level with Joe Root on 28, after it had been pointed out to him during the week the former England captain had briefly overtaken him.He is also now level with Michael Clarke for the fifth most hundreds in Australia’s history, with only Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden and Don Bradman ahead of him.

Unai Emery will be praying that his Aston Villa side can soar up the Premier League rankings the more January goes on, after a topsy-turvy end to 2024.
Indeed, impressive wins over the likes of Manchester City and RB Leipzig last month were arguably overshadowed by poor displays against teams such as Newcastle United, with Emery’s side folding at St James’ Park in mid-December to lose 3-0.
Whilst there are rumours to suggest the Villans could be bringing in some new defensive recruits to help shore up things at the back, seen in Milan Skriniar’s name floating about, the Premier League side are also hunting down more firepower up top in the form of Donyell Malen.
Aston Villa's pursuit of Malen
While no club agreement has been secured – amid talk of a £25m fee – Villa look to have won the exciting Dutchman over after agreeing personal terms, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, with even more goals added to the West Midlands side’s game subsequently should a deal progress.
Already boasting both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran in attack – who have a Premier League goal haul for the season that comes in at a combined 15 – Malen would just offer Villa another clinical head up top when at the peak of his powers, considering he fired home a ridiculous 55 strikes from 116 appearances when on the books of former employers PSV Eindhoven.
At Dortmund, away from predominantly lining up as an out-and-out striker in his native country, Malen has also excelled as a winger option down either flank, with 11 of his 13 strikes last season in the Bundesliga coming from the right channel.
Therefore, there is a tantalising future in sight where Malen gets to strut his stuff in England next to Watkins or Duran leading the line, as Emery goes about making his team even stronger to push up the league standings.
Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins
However, even if a move for Malen was to unexpectedly fall through for whatever reason, Emery wouldn’t be too disheartened, knowing that this ace in his ranks is already worth more than the Villa target after becoming a superstar this campaign.
Morgan Rogers' market value at Villa
Rogers would cost the Villans an initial £8m to bring in last January from Middlesbrough, with the promising attacking midfielder having to cut his teeth in the EFL before getting his big shot in the top flight.
Formerly on the roster at Manchester City as a youngster, it’s clear now that Rogers was born to be an entertaining talent at the very top of the English game, with stunning displays becoming commonplace now from the 22-year-old.
Many a sweet strike has been fired home from the Villa number 27 so far this campaign, with Rogers up to six goals now in league action, on top of also collecting three assists.
Off the back of his standout start to the season, it was no surprise that Emery and Co wanted to tie Rogers down to a new extended contract, with an England senior call-up even coming his way off the back of his “fearless” displays, as he was labelled by football talent scout Antonio Mango in the past.
As a direct consequence of all of the above – alongside his crucial FA Cup clincher against West Ham United – the youngster’s price tag has now far exceeded his once modest £8m valuation.
He is now worth more than Malen’s £25m fee, despite so much talk centring on the Dutchman being a potential top buy for Emery’s men, with Transfermarkt estimating that the ex-Man City man is worth in the region of around £33m.

Looking at the table above, Emery has a whole host of players who are worth many millions away from just the rise of Rogers, with Malen perhaps boosting his team even more as they aim for another top-four finish.
As for Rogers, it’s clear that Emery and co have struck gold with what already looks to be a bargain signing.

Bangladesh won the ODI series against West Indies, taking the second match with more than 29 overs to spare, bouncing back from losing the Test and T20I series. They made West Indies bat first and bowled out the home side for 108 in 35 overs. Bangladesh took less than 21 overs to reach the target, for the loss of one wicket.West Indies couldn’t handle spin again, as Nasum Ahmed took his first ODI wickets to start the West Indies collapse and Mehidy Hasan Miraz finished the rout with 4 for 29.The home side rode some early luck when openers Kyle Mayers survived a messed-up stumping chance off Mehidy, and Shai Hope overturned an lbw decision to Nasum. But the batters didn’t last much longer.Mayers was bowled by Mosaddek Hossain trying to defend on the front foot. Then Shamarh Brooks was bowled by Nasum for his first ODI wicket in his second match.Mosaddek caught Hope who mishit an attempted slog sweep, and in the same over Nasum got captain Nicholas Pooran dragging on. West Indies were 45 for 4 and Nasum had 3 for 9 from six overs, three of them maidens.Mosaddek bowled out his 10 overs by the 25th over. He had 1 for 37, but the pressure he and Nasum built led to West Indies taking more frustrated swings.Rovman Powell was out for 13 trying to flick medium-pacer Shoriful Islam, and Brandon King charged and missed Mehidy to be bowled on 11. Akeal Hosein was too slow coming from the non-striker’s end and run out on 2 and West Indies was 72 for 7.Nasum was brought back for his last two overs and finished with 3 for 19 off 10, earning the player of the match.Romario Shepherd was bowled by Mehidy on 4 and Alzarri Joseph edged Mehidy behind and West Indies was 86 for 9. Mehidy claimed Gudakesh Motie to leave Keemo Paul stranded on 25 not out.Motie got the wicket of Najmul Hossain Shanto but fellow opener Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das made no drama of the chase. Tamim finished the game with his seventh boundary to be 50 not out off 62 balls for his 53rd ODI fifty. The visitors have won the two ODIs by six and nine wickets for a fifth successive bilateral series win. The last ODI and tour match is on Saturday at the same Providence Stadium and Bangladesh will be favored to beat West Indies an 11th straight time since late 2018.
Manchester United are in desperate need of action within the first-team squad, whether that be with incomings or outgoings before the end of the month.
Ruben Amorim has been on the hunt for a new striker in recent weeks but is yet to agree a deal for a new talisman to follow in the footsteps of Viktor Gyokeres after his time under the 39-year-old at Sporting CP.
Randal Kolo Muani has been the player most linked with a move to Old Trafford since the opening of the window, but no deal has yet to be agreed for the French international.
Randal Kolo Muani for PSG
Outgoings are also to be expected as the new boss looks to make his own mark on the playing squad, potentially offloading some of Erik ten Hag’s signings who have failed to impress.
The same can’t be said for one pair, who have undoubtedly been the shining lights of Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford during his first few months at the helm.
The star men for United since Amorim arrived
Amad Diallo was a player brought back into the fold following Amorim’s appointment after being left out in the cold by former boss Ten Hag – often only utilised as an impact player.
However, the Ivorian has become a regular starter in recent weeks, taking full advantage of his increased game time, subsequently starring at the top end of the pitch for the Red Devils.
The 22-year-old has registered three goals and five assists in his last 12 outings, with his most crucial striker undoubtedly coming in the Manchester derby, scoring the winning goal against Pep Guardiola’s side.
As for Bruno Fernandes, he was a key member of the Dutchman’s side during his own tenure in the North West, but has taken his performances to the next level after the arrival of his compatriot.
United’s captain has made the same number of appearances as Amad, registering one fewer goal contribution – notching seven, including the strike in the last outing against Arsenal in their FA Cup triumph.
However, one other player looks set for the exit door after failing to replicate the aforementioned stats in taking their game to the next level under the new management.
The player who Man Utd need to sell in January
Marcus Rashford is one player who is almost certain to leave his boyhood club in the next few weeks, after seemingly not being a part of Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford.
The Englishman hasn’t featured since the victory over Viktoria Plzen back at the start of December, a real surprise given his run of three goals in just two league matches after the arrival of Amorim.
He’s since been touted with moves to Borussia Dortmund, West Ham United and Napoli, but still looks most likely to swap Manchester for Milan – with AC Milan currently the favourites for his signature.
However, Rashford shouldn’t be the only one to depart the Theatre of Dreams this month, with the hierarchy desperately needing to get Brazilian midfielder Casemiro off the wage bill.
The 32-year-old cost the club £70m back in the summer of 2022, but has been a disaster of a signing, only making six appearances since the new boss took charge.
His performance against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup was his last, looking way too slow for the demands of a top-level talent, often being out ran and bypassed in the middle of the park.
Casemiro certainly isn’t worthy of a first-team role at Old Trafford, nor is he deserving of his bonkers pay packet, which sees him pocket a remarkable £350k-per-week.

Such a figure sees him earn more than Fernandes, with the current Red Devils skipper earning £300k-per-week, alongside wantaway teammate, Rashford.
Given the club’s current cost-cutting operation, Casemiro – who The Athletic have reported that United would like to shift from the wage bill – should be the first player facing the chop, especially considering he earns the most out of any player in the current squad.
If the club are to land any new stars this month, it’s crucial that current players are offloaded to free up funds, with the Brazilian desperately needing to be moved on to prevent any further losses.

South Africa over-powered in final match of multi-format series as Capsey, Kemp impress

Freya Kemp celebrates her maiden international wicket•Getty Images
A half-century to Tazmin Brits was no match for a stellar effort with bat and ball from Sophie Ecclestone and another successful youth policy roll-out as England won the final T20I of South Africa’s tour by 38 runs in Derby.England handed an international debut to 17-year-old left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, and she took her maiden wicket when she had South Africa opener Anneke Bosch stumped by Amy Jones for 17. She followed that with the wicket of Brits, caught by Ecclestone for 59 as South Africa fell short in their attempt to overhaul a lofty target of 177.Ecclestone, an old hand for England at the age of just 23, then took two wickets, that of the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt, and then Chloe Tryon with the last ball of the match. But it was her 12-ball 33 not out that pushed England to 176 for 6 after an exciting 25 off just 17, including four fours in a row by Alice Capsey, another 17-year-old playing just her second international match. The victory allowed England to finish off the multi-format series 14-2, South Africa’s only points coming from the drawn Test in June.Cap that!Allrounder Capsey didn’t have a chance to bat on her international debut as England cruised to a six-wicket victory in the second T20I in Worcester, although she did take a wicket with her second ball when she had Lara Goodall caught by Nat Sciver to break a century opening stand. That changed on this occasion, however, following the early loss of Sophia Dunkley, who cut left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba straight to Wolvaardt at point on the first ball of the match. That brought Capsey to the crease in the No. 3 spot vacated by Bryony Smith when Kemp and right-arm quick Issy Wong came into the side, with Freya Davies also making way.Capsey struck the fifth ball she faced – from Masabata Klaas – through long-on for four and she unfurled three more in succession, clearing backward point, piercing the covers and lifting one over backward square. Capsey then turned Ayabonga Khaka to the rope through fine leg to move to 21 off 10 balls and after three overs England were 34 for 1. Mlaba returned to the attack with immediate effect, however, removing Capsey with her seventh delivery, caught by Tryon at mid-off.Alice Capsey produced a sparky maiden innings at No.3•Getty Images
Mlaba makes things happenMlaba, in the side after frontline quick Shabnim Ismail succumbed to a back problem, could have had another but Sciver, on four at the time, overturned her lbw dismissal with replays showing the ball sliding narrowly down the leg side. At the end of the powerplay, England were 53 for 2 and Danni Wyatt bumped that up with a six down the ground off Delmi Tucker, which Anneke Bosch did well to almost reach running round from long-on but failed to get a hand on as it dropped over the rope. But when Mlaba returned in the 11th over, there was no mistaking her dismissal of Sciver, bowled by one that deceived her through the air and clattered into the base of the stumps. When Tryon bowled Wyatt for 30 with another full delivery next ball, England were 86 for 4 and South Africa were regaining a measure of control.Ecclestone cuts looseEngland steadied through Amy Jones’ 28 off 18 balls but after she holed out to Brits at deep square leg off Klaas in the 18th over, Ecclestone picked a four off Khaka through wide long-on in the next as a precursor to what was to come.Ecclestone proceeded to smash 26 off the final over of the innings, bowled by Klaas, beginning with back-to-back fours before sending the fourth ball over the rope at deep midwicket. She then punched the next ball through the covers for four before sending the last ball a long way over the fence beyond the rope at deep backward square.Nonkululenko Mlaba struck twice in her first seven balls•Getty Images
Commonwealth Games ahoyWith women’s cricket set to make a Commonwealth Games debut later this week, both sides will have been looking for takeaways to Birmingham. For England in this series it’s no doubt been getting an encouraging look at their newcomers. Then there was Katherine Brunt, taking a career-best 4 for 15 at the age of 37 in the opening match at Chelmsford to prove she’s well and truly up for the tournament and Ecclestone showing off her ever-present class.England’s experimentation in the batting order has paid off, particularly in the absence of captain Heather Knight, missing with a hip injury for the last two games. Their depth was impressive too on Monday night, not least from Ecclestone at the death. For South Africa it has been a different story after struggling to get going since the Test, then losing Lizelle Lee to a shock retirement, then Kapp and most recently Ismail, who went wicketless in the first two games. Tryon, standing in for unwell captain Sune Luus, successfully mixed up her bowling to have England in trouble early.Brits – who only joined the squad with Kapp’s departure and earned a call-up to the team when Luus fell ill – was excellent in scoring at better than a run-a-ball. But South Africa still look to be a long way short of where their semi-final appearance at the ODI World Cup suggested they might be by now.
Everton could now sign a “beautiful footballer” for a fee of just £5m this month, according to a new report.
Toffees eyeing defenders for Moyes
The Toffees are keen on bolstering their attacking options this month, with a deal for Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah now edging closer to completion, but David Moyes is also looking at options to shore up his backline.
As Seamus Coleman is now in the twilight years of his career, Moyes is eager to strengthen at right-back, and Ajax’s Devyne Rensch is high up the shortlist, with the 22-year-old unwilling to sign a new contract to extend his stay with the Dutch side.
Given Everton’s struggles to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules, they are looking at low-cost options to strengthen their squad, and they were recently said to be plotting a move for Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.
The right-back is out of contract in the summer, meaning this is the Saints’ last opportunity to cash in, and Football Insider have now dropped a new update on his future.
Everton considering making offer for 36 y/o who Mourinho called "amazing"
There has been a development after a recent update.
ByHenry Jackson Jan 17, 2025
The report states the Toffees could sign Walker-Peters for a fee of just £5m this January, with Southampton now resigned to losing him either this month or at the end of the season.
The 27-year-old is unwilling to sign a new deal to extend his stay at St. Mary’s, most likely owing to his side’s very disappointing league position, meaning a winter move could now be on the cards.
The Southampton ace would be a versatile option for Moyes, given that he is able to play at right-back, left-back and in a more advanced role, but it remains to be seen whether Everton formalise their interest by making an official offer.
Walker-Peters could be a shrewd signing for Everton
The Saints have been extremely poor in the Premier League this season, and look destined to instantly return to the Championship, but the full-back has proven he is capable of playing at the top level in the past.
The Englishman has made 134 appearances in the top flight, while also making two appearances for his national side, which indicates he could be capable of making an impact at Goodison Park.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man may be particularly useful on the front foot, having received praise from ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin for his attacking talents after scoring in a 1-0 victory against Bristol City last season.
Martin said: “He can score more and assist more. It’s a brilliant, brilliant goal.”, before going on to describe Walker-Peters as a “beautiful footballer”.
That said, Everton’s main aim this winter should be signing a new striker, given that they are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks like he could be on his way this summer.
As such, the Toffees should only pursue a deal for a new full-back if they get a deal for a new forward over the line first and have money left over.
