"Superb" Portsmouth star dealt major blow as extent of recent injury shared

With seven points separating themselves and the Championship relegation zone, Portsmouth have just been dealt a frustrating blow at a crucial time on the injury front.

Portsmouth injury news

With just 13 games remaining in the Championship, Pompey are currently on course to survive at the first time of asking. However, as always, anything can still change and John Mousinho will be keen to see his side make it three wins on the bounce when they face Queens Park Rangers this weekend, having just defeated both Cardiff City and Oxford United.

Finding their form at a crucial stage, those at Fratton Park could look back on their recent wins as a defining moment for their campaign. With all three of Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and bottom side Luton Town all deciding to sack their respective managers recently, Portsmouth are enjoying their reward for sticking by Mousinho.

The next 13 games could still be full of twists and turns though, especially following recent injury news. As confirmed by Portsmouth, Callum Lang is now set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn hamstring.

Sharing the news, Mousinho told reports at his latest press conference: “Not great news on Callum. The scan has come back, as we suspected, with a hamstring tear.

John Mousinho for Portsmouth.

“We’re going to re-scan it in about 10 days just to see how it’s settled down. There’s a lot of fluid there at the moment. Most likely, we’re not going to see Callum in a Portsmouth shirt until next season.

“It’s a bit of a strange one because after the game, he was okay. He was up and about. He’s still actually up and about now. It’s not really affecting him a huge amount, but just the nature of it and the location of the injury means it’s going to be a long one.”

Portsmouth must replace "superb" Lang's goals

It’s the worst possible news for Portsmouth, who must now finish their battle for survival without their main man who has scored as many as 10 goals in 29 Championship games this season. Just how Mousinho attempts to replace those goals remains to be seen. For the next 13 games, it may well be a case of defence is the best form of attack at Fratton Park.

Callum Lang for Portsmouth.

The Pompey boss needs no reminder of Lang’s quality, having been full of praise for his forward earlier this season. Mousinho told BBC Sport: “Since Callum has come to the football club he has scored some big goals and he has been our outstanding player this season.

“The energy he puts in, the amount of running he does, his physical presence and it is about adding quality for him – today he added the quality and was superb. My only disappointment is that he didn’t score more. It was really pleasing and he should be pushing for more and more.”

India and South Africa in a tussle for Group 2's top spot

Virat Kohli is on the verge of a T20 World Cup record as teams brace for battle in pacy Perth

Firdose Moonda29-Oct-20223:11

Moody: South Africa should pick an extra pacer in Perth

Big picture
Week one of the T20 World Cup is done and the pace has been set. India have taken the early lead, despite logistical challenges (cold avocado sandwiches, anyone?) with South Africa and Zimbabwe in the chasing pack. Sunday will be telling for Group 2, with all six teams in action and a top-of-the-table clash as the main course when India play South Africa on a pacy pitch in Perth. On paper and recent form, you would say India are favourites. They have had the better of South Africa in previous tournaments and outplayed them in a series just before this one with pretty much the same team. But something seems to have changed from the South African side that sometimes looked like it was simply going through the motions earlier this month. There’s a hunger, and like India, they probably need more than some soggy bread to satiate it.Although their batting was curtailed when the skies opened in Hobart, their intent is clear: go hard and bat big. They are the only team other than New Zealand to score more than 200 so far, but they will be aware that both their games have come against teams ranked below them in this format. The tougher challenges are yet to come. India and Pakistan’s attacks are going to ask questions of South Africa’s approach and they will need to make sure they have answers at the ready. They will also trust that their pace pack can be similarly threatening, and live up to their reputation as among the best combinations in the tournament.India’s have already gone some way to doing that, when they tied Pakistan down in what became a statement-win thanks to a batting performance that screamed self-belief. They followed up with a clinical performance against Netherlands and, importantly, have not had to contend with any rain. Yet, South Africa would have been on the same number of points as India had they been able to complete their match against Zimbabwe and now they find themselves playing a little bit of catch-up to ensure they make the knockouts.India will be aware of their slim advantage and will want to maximise it with a win over South Africa, to make next week a little easier for them. They’ll still want to win at least one more game to make sure their destiny is in their own hands, and with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe to come, will back themselves to do so. So while India will want to win this contest, South Africa almost have to, to avoid making their other big match, against Pakistan, a do-or-die contest.Form guide
India: WWLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa WWLLWIn the spotlight
Virat Kohli needs 28 runs to break Mahela Jayawardene’s record for the most runs in T20 World Cups, after going past Chris Gayle in the previous match. He already has the most fifties in T20 World Cups, double Jayawardene’s six and three more than his captain Rohit Sharma, and there’s every reason to believe he will add to that number. Kohli has been in sensational form in the tournament so far, with his match-winning knock against Pakistan already the stuff of legend. The biggest stage is clearly motivating him to put on his biggest performances and he will know another significant contribution will go a long way to sealing India’s place in the knockouts.Rilee Rossouw is only the second player to score back-to-back T20I centuries, after Gustav McKeon from France, and now he has the opportunity to score successive tons against India too. Rossouw’s first T20I hundred came earlier this month, against in Indore, four innings after he struck an unbeaten 96 against England in Cardiff. He followed up with an emotionally-charged 109 against Bangladesh and has now scored more runs in T20I cricket in 2022 than he did in 2014, 2015 and 2016 (his previous international stint) combined. With scrutiny on Temba Bavuma’s lack of form, Rossouw is making sure South Africa’s top order still succeeds.Team news
India have played the same XI in both their matches so far and may not have reason to change a winning combination.India (probable): 1 KL Rahul, 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Axar Patel, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Arshdeep SinghDespite being key players, Temba Bavuma and Tabraiz Shamsi’s spots could be in question•ICC via Getty

South Africa are likely to leave out one of their specialist spinners to bring back a fourth fast bowler, and it could be Tabraiz Shamsi to miss out with Keshav Maharaj capable of doing the holding job in the middle overs. Lungi Ngidi sat out in Sydney and could return but they may also toy with the idea of unleashing left-armer Marco Jansen, either instead of Ngidi or in place of fellow allrounder Wayne Parnell. That’s the easy bit as far as their team selection is concerned. The more difficult question is whether to drop underperforming captain Bavuma for the in-form Reeza Hendricks at the top of the order. There are as many reasons to make that call as there are not to, and South Africa may just give Bavuma another match to find his rhythm.South Africa (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma, 3 Rilee Rossouw 4 Aiden Markram, 5 David Miller, 6 Tristan Stubbs 7 Wayne Parnell/Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Anrich Nortje 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Kagiso RabadaPitch and conditions
It is looking tasty for the quicks with pace, bounce and early swing on offer and both attacks will want to caution against getting carried away. While the strip looks green, this will be the second match on the ground on the day, following Netherlands vs Pakistan. Doubtless, they will look at the mistakes the Pakistan seamers made early on in their match against Zimbabwe, when they started off bowling too full. Hard lengths are the way to go in Perth. And that’s not the only challenge for batters. On a big outfield, finding the boundary takes some extra muscle so turning ones into twos and twos into threes is crucial. The average first innings score is 143 and 200 has only been breached at this venue once, when England played Australia three weeks ago. There was rain around on the day before the match but don’t push the panic button just yet. Despite cloud cover on game day, the chances of rain are no more than 14% through the afternoon and dwindle to just 4% by the time the first ball is scheduled to be bowled.Stats and trivia
India and South Africa have met five times in T20 World Cups, but not since 2014. India have won four of those matches, including the semi-final in Mirpur. South Africa’s only victory was in 2009. South Africa were the last team to beat India, in a dead rubber in their three-match series earlier this month.Quotes
“The conditions are different…but we pride ourselves on being able to adapt, and that is what good international teams should be able to do anyway, so looking forward to playing in these conditions, and let’s see how the game goes.”
India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour explains how the team is embracing changing conditions around Australia.”Most of our guys are also used to conditions in Australia. We come from South Africa. It’s mostly difficult batting conditions. Lots of bounce at some of the stadiums. So we are sort of used to the conditions, and as bowlers, we’ve obviously played in it as well.”

Newcastle on verge of beating Real Madrid to deal for "exciting" new gem

Already closing in on their first signing of the summer, Newcastle United are reportedly on the verge of beating Real Madrid in the race to welcome a young Spanish talent.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been forced to hold back in the last two transfer windows thanks to profit and sustainability rules, but will be desperate to make up for lost time when the summer arrives. Having already sold both Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly last month, those at St James’ Park may well finally have the space to welcome some fresh faces.

Just who those fresh faces are remains to be seen, but the rumours have certainly been coming thick and fast. Names such as Johan Bakayoko have threatened to steal the headlines this week in a move that would complete Newcastle’s frontline once and for all.

Johan Bakayoko for PSV Eindhoven.

The PSV Eindhoven winger is a rising star and recently showed exactly what he’s capable of against Premier League opposition, scoring an impressive solo goal in a 3-2 victory against Liverpool in the Champions League.

He’s not the only winger on the Magpies’ list of potential reinforcements though. According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are now on the verge of signing Antonio Cordero from Malaga, having reportedly reached an agreement with the young Spaniard.

Newcastle now chasing bargain deal to sign "decisive" in-demand midfielder

He’s a man in demand…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 13, 2025

A player who will be arriving on a free deal in the summer if that agreement has been reached, Newcastle may well get the chance to celebrate victory against the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal in the transfer market.

Cordero, meanwhile, will be eager to make his mark on Eddie Howe’s side in pre-season if St James’ Park is to be his next destination. At just 18 years old, the Spaniard will have the chance to lay down an early marker for a place in Newcastle’s senior squad.

"Exciting" Cordero is an impressive coup

Given the interest of both Real Madrid and Arsenal, among others, Newcastle deserve credit for how they’ve swooped in and reportedly landed Cordero’s signature ahead of the summer.

The Malaga star has already been making his mark in senior football in Spain, scoring four goals and assisting another six in La Liga2 and seemingly in no mood to slow down any time soon. Earning plenty of praise as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson described Cordero as “direct” and “exciting” at the beginning of the year.

Following Almiron’s January exit, there’s certainly room for another winger at St James’ Park alongside Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, which opens the door for a young prospect to arrive.

On a free deal, Newcastle also have the chance to welcome a future star without thinking about PSR concerns ahead of the summer transfer window – highlighting an intelligent move.

Rahul Dravid throws weight behind KL Rahul: 'He's really well suited for these kind of pitches'

India coach has “absolutely no doubt about who’s going to open”, and says Rahul is well-aware of the support he has from the team management

Sidharth Monga01-Nov-20228:32

Dravid: Rahul knows he has our support – both in words and action

KL Rahul has unequivocal support from captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid after three single-digit scores in the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup. In 13 matches since the start of the Asia Cup in August year, Rahul has averaged 27.33 at a strike rate of 121.03. In the same period, his two top-order colleagues, Virat Kohli and Rohit have scored at strike rates of 142.49 and 138.79, which has raised questions over Rahul’s place in the side. India themselves have no such doubts.”No, not at all,” Dravid said when asked if Rahul’s form has become a headache for the leadership. “I think he’s a fantastic player, and he’s got a proven track record. He’s done really well. I thought he’s been batting superbly. These things can happen in a T20 game sometimes. It’s not been that easy for top-order batsmen, this tournament has been pretty challenging.Related

“I thought he was superb in the practice game against Australia with Mitchell Starc and Patrick Cummins. It was a pretty good attack, and I thought he batted superbly that day [for his 57 off 33]. So he’s actually playing really well. Just hoping it all clicks together over the next three or four games.”We know his quality, we know his ability, and he’s really well suited for these kind of conditions, these kind of pitches. He’s got a good all-around game. He’s got a very good strong back-foot game, which is obviously very much required in these conditions.”It is the conditions that have earned Rahul elbow room. In the 35 balls he has faced this tournament, Rahul has attempted to hit three boundaries, getting out on one of those. His other two dismissals came to defensive shots. That brings into sharp focus Rahul’s intent, which can sometimes be at odds with his exceptional ability with the bat. Dravid was asked if India can afford to give Rahul the time to play himself back into form in such a short format.”In these conditions, maybe we are able to afford him that time,” Dravid said. “We completely back him. We have no concerns about him. We know that when he gets going, and I’ve seen it against Australia, against a top-class attack just a couple of weeks ago, I know the impact this guy can make. In Rohit’s and my mind, there’s absolutely no doubt about who’s going to open for us.”I think [there] is a unique nature to playing this tournament in this country, that almost game-to-game you’re having to adapt your tactics, your strategies to different conditions. I think that’s the uniqueness of that. If the conditions so dictate that the ball is nipping around doing a bit, then we can afford our batsmen to maybe be a little bit more conservative, keep wickets in hand and then target.KL Rahul has had fitness and form issues to contend with over the past six months•PTI

“It’s about adapting and being smart. I don’t think there’s just one way to play T20 cricket on all conditions. Yes, there is a general template in which we understand you have to be positive; you have to take the game on. That would be 80% of most T20 games, but there is another 20%, and that can come in big tournaments like this, wherein you’ve got to have the players – and we discussed that in our dressing room – who have to be able to adapt and understand and read a situation.”If it’s not a 200-run wicket or it’s not a 180-run wicket and 160 is going to get the job done for you, then let’s figure out a way to get to 160. Last night [in Perth against South Africa], 150 might have done the job for us. I mean, 133 nearly did; 150 might have. We might be able to afford people a little bit more time [in such conditions].”We may not [here, in Adelaide]. Might be really flat when we come out here tomorrow, and it might become a 180 wicket and we might need to go harder. But I think the key word for me is adaptability and reading these conditions, these boundaries really well, and the teams that do that best will probably be the ones that will end up in the top four and certainly in the top two.”Rahul has not been left on his own to figure his way out. There have been conversations and support has been communicated to him. “Rest assured, both in words and in action, over the last year, he knows he has our support. He has known that. There has been a lot of clarity about what our side is going to be, what our squad is going to be coming into this tournament, and we haven’t wavered from that for a very long time.”Yes, because we play a lot of cricket, you might see a lot of different people playing in different situations, in different games. There have been a lot of injuries, including him. He’s had phases where he’s unfortunately been injured. But in word and in action, with all of our players – that’s the great thing about Rohit, that he’s really shown them that confidence and that belief.”There has been a school of thought that Rishabh Pant can bring in the much-needed left-hand option if he opens in place of Rahul, but the only way Pant might get in is if Dinesh Karthik is not fully fit after he had a back spasm while keeping against South Africa in Perth. Dravid said Karthik had shaped up well on the morning before the Bangladesh match, and that he would be assessed after training. A final decision will be made on the day of the match.

Crispim tinha sido afastado do grupo do Fortaleza por terfeito uma festa de aniversário na última sexta-feira. A decisão, porém, gerou polêmica.

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced their first privately-owned franchise league, a T10 tournament, which has been established with Mulk International – the founding company of the Abu Dhabi T10. The six-team tournament is slated to take place in March 2023 and will be called the . The Abu Dhabi T10 has been played since 2017 and has just completed its sixth season.”We are pleased to announce the introduction of Zimbabwe’s own franchise-based T10 league, a powerful format that we believe is exactly what our changing, fast-paced world needs right now,” Tavengwa Mukuhlani, ZC Chairman, said.ZC is hopeful that the tournament will attract top players from around the world, more than a decade after they last dipped their toes into attracting big names with the Stanbic T20. The competition boasted 20 foreign names, including Chris Gayle and Shaun Tait, across Zimbabwe’s five domestic teams and had a headline sponsor but was owned and run by ZC. It was played for three seasons before Stanbic pulled out and since then Zimbabwe’s domestic competitions have been played without much fanfare, and sometimes not at all.In a country wracked by economic woes, Zimbabwean Cricket has not been exempt and the game has lurched through a massive debt crisis, a temporary ban on its administration at the ICC and some of its biggest name players (Heath Streak and Brendan Taylor) banned for their involvement in corruption. But, the sport seems to be finding its feet after Zimbabwe’s men’s team made it to the Super 12s of the most recent T20 World Cup and their women’s team only narrowly missed out on qualifying for the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.With more international fixtures on the horizon, Zimbabwe are also looking to dabble into the lucrative league structure and with neighbours South Africa launching an all-owned IPL T20 league, the SA20, they have entered the T10 market. The participating franchises, player auction dates, fixtures and other details will be announced at a later date, with the tournament scheduled to begin on March 29, 2023.
