Leus du Plooy century can't carry Derbyshire home

Visitors just short of 380 target in 58 overs as 552 runs are scored on final day at Sussex

Derbyshire 407 (Guest 105, du Plooy 52, Karvelas 4-64, Shipley 4-124) and 361 for 8 (du Plooy 128, Ali 73) drew with Sussex 402 (Hudson-Prentice 63*, Scrimshaw 5-49) and 384 for 9 dec (Coles 180, Thomson 5-110)Skipper Leus du Plooy made a magnificent 128 but Derbyshire came up just short in their pursuit of a target of 380 in 58 overs to beat Sussex in the LV= Insurance County Championship at Hove.Du Plooy’s third hundred of the summer means he is now the leading scorer in Division Two with 979 runs but when he was caught in the deep Derbyshire still needed 54 from 41 balls.Anuj Dal and Alex Thomson kept going but they were both caught trying to clear the midwicket boundary. When Thomson was eighth out with 11 balls remaining Sussex fancied their chances of an unlikely win, but Sam Conners and George Scrimshaw shut up shop, Derbyshire closing on 361 for 8 at the end of a remarkable day in which 552 runs were scored. Derbyshire stay bottom and Sussex remain in third place.Related

Du Plooy’s dismissal – caught at deep midwicket off Henry Shipley – was the turning point. The South African’s fifth-wicket alliance with Haider Ali, who contributed 73 off 54 balls as 145 were added in 20.2 overs, had looked like being decisive.Ali was well caught by Tom Haines trying to clear long off but Du Plooy pushed on, hitting all around the wicket in an impressive display of power, placement and, when required, unorthodoxy as he employed the ramp shot to good effect to find the gaps. A single off Jack Carson took the 28-year-old to his century and when the last ten overs started with 87 needed, Derbyshire were favourites. But Du Plooy, having hit 17 fours and three sixes in 117 balls faced, tried to clear the temptingly short pavilion-side boundary once too often and thereafter Sussex’s overseas pair of Nathan McAndrew and Shipley bowled with impressive control.Derbyshire had lost three wickets in the afternoon session with Ari Karvelas picking up Harry Came, who edged to slip, before Luis Reece’s lack of footwork betrayed him and he offered a low edge to second slip. Brooke Guest played on to give Shipley his second wicket and at tea Derbyshire still needed 270 in 36 overs. But Du Plooy and Wayne Madsen upped the tempo, adding 60 in 11 overs before James Coles pinned Madsen sweeping with a full-length delivery.Du Plooy’s effort was the second fine innings of the day after Coles had been last out for a career-best 180 before Sussex declared 25 minutes after lunch. The 19-year-old, who had resumed on 101, shared stands of 70 for the sixth wicket with Fynn Hudson-Prentice, 62 for the eighth with Carson and 63 for the ninth in 47 balls with Shipley before Sussex pulled out.Coles had batted for six minutes short of six hours after coming in on day three when Sussex were 1 for 2. He faced 264 balls and hit 23 fours and two sixes before holing out to deep midwicket, an anti-climactic end to an outstanding innings.Off-spinner Thomson finished with 5 for 110 and had match figures of 8 for 180. He picked up his fifth wicket when McAndrew was caught at silly point. With George Scrimshaw taking 5 for 49 in Sussex’s first innings, it was the first time two Derbyshire bowlers had taken five wickets in the same game at Hove since 1933.

Billings leads Invincibles into final with ruthless 76*

Hosts overcome brief wobble in run chase at The Oval after bowlers keep Rockets grounded

Oval Invincibles skipper Sam Billings steered his side into their first Men’s Hundred final with a display of ruthless hitting to overcome current champions Trent Rockets by five wickets.Billings, who had endured a lean tournament with the bat – averaging 12.5 in his previous seven innings – rediscovered form just in time to rubber-stamp top spot in the table and an automatic place in Sunday’s final. He struck 76 not out from 40 balls as the Invincibles chased down their opponents’ total of 148 for 7 at the Kia Oval, overcoming a brief wobble after three wickets had fallen in three deliveries to share a partnership of 73 from 40 with Will Jacks.Billings completed the win with a six off Ish Sodhi to leave the Rockets’ hopes of defending their crown hanging by a thread. The Rockets opted to bat after winning the toss but none of their top-order batters managed to build on useful starts.Alex Hales was first to go, holing out to deep third and Joe Root – having reverse-ramped Spencer Johnson for six – was undone by a ball that skidded through to hit the top of middle and off.Sam Hain’s bustling knock of 16 from 10 came to an end when he slapped a return catch to Adam Zampa and, when fellow leg-spinner Nathan Sowter had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught in the deep, the visitors were 54 for 4.Colin Munro took on both spinners, dispatching them over the top for sixes and rebuilt the Rockets’ innings in tandem with Lewis Gregory, who capitalised on being dropped at point by Tom Curran to share in a partnership of 70 from 46.Zampa eventually broke the stand, tempting Munro with a slower ball that he skied to mid-off and Tom Curran made amends for his earlier fumble during the next set as Gregory top-edged a paddle to Billings.A late flurry of boundaries by Daniel Sams, with 19 from nine, boosted the Rockets in the death overs but their total looked unlikely to seriously trouble the home side, particularly after Jason Roy made early inroads with 19 from 13.Yet Roy’s wicket was the first of three to fall in as many deliveries, including two to Sams as Sodhi took a stunning one-handed catch at full stretch to dismiss Tawanda Muyeye and Sam Curran was castled by the next. However, Jacks – who had only faced two of the first 20 balls – steadied the ship by drilling Luke Wood over cover for two sixes and Billings then seized control, hammering Sodhi twice into the upper tier at the Vauxhall End.Billings picked out the gaps expertly, pulling Matt Carter for successive fours, but the stand ended when Jacks chopped on to Sam Cook and Jimmy Neesham’s departure followed with 48 still required. But Tom Curran kept his captain company with an unbeaten 18 and Billings finished the job in style, with eight balls unused.

Rain had the final say in the LV= Insurance County Championship game between Lancashire and Nottinghamshire at Emirates Old Trafford with the match abandoned as a draw mid-afternoon.Only 15 overs and one ball were possible on the final day in which time Lancashire advanced their first innings to 272 for 7 from the 84.1 overs bowled over four days, with Matty Hurst top-scoring having made a fine unbeaten fifty on his first-class debut.Lancashire take six points from the match to remain mid-table while Nottinghamshire’s seven points sealed their top-flight status with one round of games left. When play did get under way – following a thirty-minute delay for rain – with Lancashire resuming their first innings on 225 for 6, Tom Bailey was quickly into his stride steering Calvin Harrison to third man for four to bring up the fifty partnership with Hurst from 99 balls.Dane Paterson hit back by having Bailey taken at first slip for 27 but Hurst, 35 not out overnight, moved on steadily to reach a 112-ball half-century with a sumptuous cover drive for four off Hutton.Jack Blatherwick helped steer Lancashire to a batting point with two fours in his unbeaten 18 and that that proved to be the last of the action as rain took the players from the field just before noon. Further bursts of heavy rain followed to finally curtail proceedings at 2.15pm.

Should New Zealand look to get Jamieson into the XI straightaway?

New Zealand vs Pakistan is one of the games with extremely high stakes left in the league stage of the World Cup. Till some days ago, it looked like the four semi-finalists were locked in, with New Zealand in there and Pakistan just out. Things have changed since. The turn for the worse for New Zealand has been dramatic. After four wins on the trot at the start of the league stage, form has fallen by the wayside, and defeats (three in a row) and player injuries have mounted. As number of their players are nursing injuries at the moment – though they trained in Bengaluru on the eve of this game – a couple more results not going their way could mean New Zealand dropping out of the top four.Full previewTeam newsNew Zealand (possible): 1 Devon Conway, 2 Will Young, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (capt & wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 James Neesham, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson, 11 Trent BoultPakistan (probable): 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Agha Salman, 8 Shadab Khan/Mohammad Nawaz, 9 Mohammad Wasim, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris RaufMatch previewAustralia vs England, Ahmedabad (2pm IST; 8.30am GMT; 7.30pm AEDT)3:52

Hayden: Zampa’s form, Warner’s dominance key to Australia’s success

Suffice to say, this is not the occasion it was earmarked to be. England versus Australia at the back-end of the group stages, at the most grandiloquent venue that this World Cup can offer. This was intended, at the very least, to be a shoot-out for the semi-finals, and maybe even a dress rehearsal for a yet more significant showdown at this same venue further down the line. And long, long ago, when Australia were the team sitting rock-bottom of the World Cup standings after back-to-back losses to South Africa and India, England might even have assumed that this would be their opportunity to land the final smackdown on their oldest foes. How the worm has turned since then. Australia have gone on to win four from four, while it’s England who have spent the past fortnight circling the drain. Somehow, they go into this contest with a 0.4% chance of reaching the knock-outs – but the fact that they aren’t dead yet despite five losses in six only goes to show how loaded towards the established teams this format really is.Full previewTeam newsAustralia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Travis Head, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Josh Inglis (wk), 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Cameron Green, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodEngland (probable): 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Jos Buttler (capt, wk), 6 Moeen Ali / Harry Brook, 7 Liam Livingstone, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Adil Rashid
