IPL insists on seven-day isolation period for Covid-19 cases

The wider sporting world has allowed athletes to play with the virus, but the league is adopting more stringent protocols

Nagraj Gollapudi18-Mar-2023

IPL 2023 will not be played in a bio-secure bubble, but there are other restrictions•BCCI

Even as sporting authorities worldwide are permitting athletes to participate in events despite testing positive for Covid-19 over the last year, the IPL has decided to stick to its 2022 policy of asking players with the virus to go through a week-long isolation period before rejoining their teams. While the season will no longer need to operate out of a bio-secure bubble, which had been mandatory for the three years since the pandemic, the IPL has said it wants to be “careful” and players testing positive will not be allowed to participate in a match or in training until they return consecutive negative tests, the earliest of which can be taken on day five of recovery.”While there has been a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases in India we still have to be careful of the emerging strains which are becoming a concern at regular intervals,” the IPL’s medical guidelines, which were distributed to franchises this week, say. “Positive cases must be isolated for maximum seven days. Positive cases will not be allowed to participate in any match or any form of activity/event during the period of isolation.”From day five, they can undergo a RT-PCR, provided they must be must be asymptomatic without any medication for 24 hours. Once the first result is negative the 2nd test must be done 24 hours apart. Only after obtaining two negative RT-PCR tests 24 hours apart i.e. day five and day six, can they rejoin the group.”The IPL pointed out that testing will be carried out only for those actually showing signs of Covid-19, not for those who are asymptomatic. Any participant continuing to test positive even after day seven would need to present two negative tests 12 hours apart before rejoining the group. This is in contrast to the loosening of restrictions in dealing with Covid-19 cases in global sport including international cricket. Last August, Australian allrounder Tahlia McGrath became the first cricketer to play a match despite testing positive for Covid-19 in the Commonwealth Games T20 final against India.A few months later, at the men’s T20 World Cup, Mathew Wade, who had tested positive, was named part of the Australian team in the league match against England which was eventually washed out. In January, Australian opener Matt Renshwaw reported Covid-19 symptoms on the first morning of the New Year’s Test against South Africa in Sydney, tested positive before toss, but went on to play the match. The ICC has allowed players to participate in matches at global events including the CWG in England and the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. It remains to be seen, though, whether it will retain the same process during the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Harshal: DRS calls for wides and no-balls could fall in 'grey' area

“Huge difference in a right-armer and a left-armer bowling a couple of inches outside the wide line to a right-hand batter,” argues the RCB quick

Nagraj Gollapudi28-Mar-2023

“Technology can definitely be helpful in situations where you can separate black and white – but these balls are always going to be grey”•Pankaj Nangia/BCCI

Royal Challengers Bangalore strike bowler Harshal Patel is not convinced the use of DRS to review wides and over-the-waist no balls this IPL will increase the accuracy of decisions. While he admits he will use a review for a tight umpiring call, especially in the death overs, Harshal argues that technology might not be definitive in determining a wide or an over-the-waist no-ball, and suspects those calls will fall in a “grey” area.”Technology can definitely be helpful in situations where you can separate black and white. But these balls are always going to be grey, especially wide-ball lines. Because you can’t really judge how much the batter has moved, whether the ball was within his reach, the angle of the delivery…,” Harshal said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo before joining the Royal Challengers camp for the IPL.”There’s going to be a huge difference in where the ball finishes between a right-hander bowling the same [ball] a couple of inches outside the wide line and a left-hander bowling from over the stumps a couple of inches outside the wide line. When the [right-hand] batter tries to reach, it’s always going to be wider when he plays the left-hander, [and] it’s always going to be closer when he plays the right-hander.Related

Why has BCCI allowed teams to use DRS for wides and no-balls?

WPL and IPL: Players can use DRS for wides and no-balls

“I don’t know how many of these factors will be taken into account when making decisions. Obviously, they can’t take a lot of these factors into account because that will consume a lot of time. In my humble opinion, this doesn’t solve the problem. You have to call it the human factor in the game and move on.”Harshal’s fears came to the fore last Sunday in the final of the inaugural WPL, for which the BCCI had trialled the new playing condition of using DRS for wides and over-the-waist no-balls. The WPL final, between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, witnessed high drama early in the match when Shafali Verma was given out caught off an Issy Wong full toss which fell in that “grey” area Harshal described. Wong was celebrating with her Mumbai team-mates when on-field umpire Vrinda Rathi sent the matter to the TV umpire Pashchim Pathak, who took a few looks at the replay before ruling Shafali out.Such reviews will be a part of the two unsuccessful reviews each team will have per innings in the IPL, just like it was in the WPL. So, while it might not always go the way of your team, the option is there for the teams, but to use it smartly.”The other thing is you get only two reviews, right? Do you really want to use a review on a marginal call, which may or may not go in your favour, as opposed to use it in a situation where you can get the batter out,” Harshal said in response to that question. But if you have a review in hand and you are bowling at the death, a phase where fast bowlers tend to bowl wide yorkers outside the off stump?”For sure – 100%,” Harshal said, that in such a scenario he will press his captain to use the review.Incidentally, Harshal’s thoughts match that of former ICC Elite Panel umpire Simon Taufel, who last year told ESPNcricinfo why he disagreed with having wides and height no-balls being reviewed by technology.”With wides, for example, and here we’re going to, potentially according to you, or according to the player or the debate, take a wide call and throw that back to the third umpire for them to judge on something that might be marginal and is still a judgement call,” Taufel had said. “Are you going to be able to over-rule as a third umpire what a leg-side wide might look like? That’s a really interesting proposition to throw to a third umpire and say: I definitely think you got that wide wrong.”If you look at a ball that cuts across a right-hander from a left-armer [fast bowler], that cuts the wide guideline – that’s a pretty big call to over-rule. Can you clearly define for me what conclusive evidence is to overturn a wide both leg side, off side and height? And where do you then draw the line as to what a wide is? Because with wides, for example, you still got this opinion around: either could the batsman have played a shot? Has the batsman brought the ball sufficiently within reach? And you are putting them [under] a lot more stress and pressure around those definitions. Of course, if the ball has flicked the bat or the pad, and an umpire’s called a wide – yeah, that’s quite clearly an error. [But] I worry about where this is going to end up. Is everything that an umpire does likely to fall under the Decision Review System?”

Stead gets two-year extension as New Zealand head coach

His extended period will include the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2025 WTC final, if they qualify

Gary Stead is going to continue as the head coach of New Zealand men’s team until June 2025 after getting a two-year extension. First appointed in late 2018 for two years, Stead’s contract was renewed in 2020 until the end of the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, and his latest extension will run until the conclusion of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, in June 2025.After the World Cup this year, Stead’s extended period will include the T20 World Cup next summer, the Champions Trophy in early 2025, and the WTC final in 2025 if New Zealand qualify. An NZC release stated the decision was taken after “a long and thorough consultative process” in which Stead received “unanimous support” for an extension.”The support for Gary was overwhelmingly positive – from the players, the BLACKCAPS support staff, Major Association coaches and support staff, as well as the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and NZC High Performance Unit staff,” NZC’s GM high performance Bryan Stronach said. “Gary’s results have been very impressive and we’re confident that he still has a lot to offer the team.”Of course, a big part of this decision came down to whether Gary wanted to continue and he made it clear his appetite to take this team forward was as keen as ever.”Stronach further said a split-coaching set-up was considered for the role and rejected.”A split-coaching role was discussed in depth but, with most of our leading BLACKCAPS playing across all three formats, and the culture of the group so strong and positive, we saw clear benefits in supporting the status quo.”Of all the different potential scenarios, we considered this the best option available to us.”Stronach also spoke about a “fourth coach” concept, in which the New Zealand touring teams will be supported by coaches with specialist skillsets or “knowledge of specific overseas environments or formats”. Recent examples of this were the appointments of Stephen Fleming, Shane Bond, Saqlain Mushtaq, Luke Wright and Thilan Samaraweera.”Several months of discussions and consultation preceded this decision and, as CEO, I’m very satisfied all options were well considered,” NZC chief executive David White said. “I’m very pleased for Gary. He’s a quality person, he has the support and trust of the players, and he’s very good at his job.Test captain Tim Southee said the role of the head coach was also about managing people along with the technical aspects that came along with the role.”Gary’s had great success leading us into finals in all three formats and, of course, that World Test Championship win It’s been great the way that he’s come in and built on what was previously achieved.”The sheer amount of time players and support staff spend away from family and loved ones makes for a challenging environment. With so much cricket being played these days, being able to effectively manage people and their workloads is a huge part of the job.”

Tom Haines hundred leads strong Sussex response

Matt Salisbury takes three either side of century stand to keep Leicestershire in the game

Tom Haines made his second hundred of the campaign•Getty Images

Sussex opener Tom Haines posted his second century of the season after allrounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice had taken a career best 5 for 50 as their Vitality County Championship match against Leicestershire remained nicely balanced at the halfway stage. The visiting side closed on 282 for 6 in reply to Leicestershire’s 338 all out, trailing by 56.Haines, who toured with England Lions the winter before last but had a relatively lean season in 2023, followed his 133 against Northamptonshire in the opening round with 108 here, hitting 14 fours and a six. As Sussex dominated the first half of the day, Haines shared a second-wicket partnership of 168 with his fellow left-hander Tom Alsop, who made 49.But Leicestershire’s bowlers performed better as the afternoon progressed and earned a significant late breakthrough when Tom Scriven produced the ball of the day to bowl Cheteswar Pujara for 38 before Matt Salisbury dismissed Hudson-Prentice with the last ball of the day.The day had begun with Leicestershire adding only 12 runs to their overnight score in losing their last two wickets. That disappointment was eased by a wicket from the first ball of the Sussex innings as Tom Clark edged a decent delivery from Salisbury to third slip but it turned out to be the only positive moment for Leicestershire in the whole of the opening session. The remainder saw Haines and Alsop largely in charge, leaving Leicestershire to reflect on how much they were missing the unavailable Chris Wright in particular but also Josh Hull, the beanpole seamer who is currently recovering from a side strain. As the home attack struggled to conjure any response with the Kookaburra, it sharpened the appreciation of Hudson-Prentice’s achievement. The former Derbyshire seamer, speaking on the first evening, did not quite declare himself to be a fan of the Kookaburra ball but saw bowling with it as an opportunity rather than a hindrance, reasoning that the challenge was a chance for county bowlers to develop different skills. He completed his five-for – only the second of his career – in his first 10 deliveries on the second morning. He bowled Liam Trevaskis – admittedly through a yawning gap between bat and pad – before finding an edge to have Salisbury caught behind by a diving John Simpson.Trevaskis, who has passed fifty eight times in first-class cricket but is yet to convert one to a hundred, did not add to his overnight 82.Salisbury’s immediate success with the ball momentarily suggested that Sussex might have some work to do before they could start eating into Leicestershire’s total but in the event, although Alsop survived a chance off Salisbury to Scott Currie at short midwicket on 29, it was not until 20 overs into the afternoon that the second-wicket pair were parted. Both were out in the space of four overs, Alsop bowled shouldering arms to Salisbury after the two had added 168 at not far short of four runs per over. Haines, having gone to 50 from 63 balls and completed his century from 128, was out to a miscued pull against Currie, the ball looping off a top edge to mid-off, a rather tame ending to an innings that contained 14 fours and six that was for the most part a good watch. The 25-year-old left-hander registered three centuries in each of his first two full seasons to earn his Lions call-up but drew a blank last season, passing fifty six times without managing to make three figures once. With the fillip of those wickets, Leicestershire seamers began to bowl better as a collective, than earlier, in particular Ben Mike, repeatedly no-balled for overstepping in his first two spells, who was rewarded with a wicket when James Coles, tempted to go after a short-pitched ball, spooned a catch to mid-on.They succeeded also in dragging back the scoring rate appreciably, persuading skipper Lewis Hill to delay taking the new ball until four overs after it was due.A chance to inflict further damage with the old one was missed when Simpson, on 9, was dropped at midwicket off Trevaskis, but when the new one was taken, Scriven delivered a peach of a ball to beat Pujara’s defensive bat and clip off stump and Salisbury bowled Hudson-Prentice with one that may have kept a touch low.

Man Utd and Amorim ready to sign £50m+ Brazil "machine" to partner Ugarte

Manchester United are now ready to sign a “machine” midfielder this summer, with Ruben Amorim eager to bolster his options in the middle of the park, but a move may only be possible on one condition, according to a report.

Man Utd searching for a midfielder

Given that Casemiro’s days as a Man United player could be numbered, Amorim may be tasked with bringing in a replacement this summer, and a number of potential replacements have been identified.

The likes of Adam Wharton, Hugo Larsson and Joao Gomes are on the shortlist ahead of what is Amorim’s first summer transfer window as United boss, and the manager could have a major rebuilding job on his hands.

A 0-0 draw against rivals Manchester City at the weekend is not the worst result on paper, but it leaves the Red Devils 13th in the Premier League table, having fallen way below expectations, with a Europa League triumph their last chance of having a successful season.

Winning the Europa League would, of course, grant qualification to the Champions League next season, which could be crucial for Man United’s summer transfer business.

That is according to a report from GiveMeSport, which states Man United are now ready to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, should they manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with Amorim eager to bring in a midfield partner for Manuel Ugarte.

The Atalanta star has a price tag of around £52m, so he will not come cheap, and the Italian club are determined to keep hold of him, given the level of his performances this season.

A deal would be easier to facilitate if Amorim’s side secure qualification for Europe’s elite competition next season, given the financial benefits provided.

"Machine" Ederson impressing in the Serie A and Europe

Atalanta are in a very strong position to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and the Brazilian has been one of the first names on the team sheet, making 30 Serie A appearances, during which time he has provided three goals and two assists.

While the 25-year-old is capable of being a threat on the front foot, he is also solid defensively, winning 100% of his tackles and aerial duels against Arsenal earlier this season, in what Statman Dave branded a “top display”.

It is not the first time the maestro has impressed in Europe in recent memory, with football writer Carlo Garganese branding him a “machine” after his performance against Bayer Leverkusen in Atalanta’s Europa League final triumph last season.

As such, Ederson could be a fantastic signing for Man United this summer, at which point it is vital Amorim brings in a midfielder, despite a recent improvement in Casemiro’s performances, with the 33-year-old midfielder making 11 tackles against Man City.
