ENTENDA A NOVA 5ª DIVISÃO DO PAULISTÃO

Newcastle brewing Isak-level star in 18-year-old who's "similar to Mbappe"

Newcastle United’s summer window underlined a significant shift in strategy.

In past years, big-money signings such as Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali were the headline arrivals, but the 2025 market told a different story.

But the clear trend running through Eddie Howe’s recruitment is a move toward youth, sustainability, and long-term potential.

It’s a reminder of the balancing act Newcastle and other clubs must perform in the era of Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

Yes, there was major business, with Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale all arriving.

With an average squad age of 27.5, the club is determined to lower that figure while also investing in academy and U21 prospects.

Newcastle academy prospect Alfie Harrison

Howe’s ability to improve players has been central to this philosophy.

Joelinton’s reinvention, Dan Burn’s development, and the transformation of Alexander Isak into one of the world’s best show why the club trusts Howe to nurture the next wave of talent.

Isak signing proved to be the blueprint for Newcastle

When Newcastle signed Isak from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a then-club-record fee, eyebrows were raised.

The Swedish forward had endured an inconsistent season before his move, and many questioned whether he could justify the £60m outlay.

Alexander Isak

Three years on, he left Tyneside as one of the most complete forwards in the Premier League.

According to FBref, in 2024/25, he scored 19 non-penalty goals from an expected goals tally of 17.2 – highlighting both clinical finishing and an ability to outperform his underlying data.

He contributed 29 goal involvements overall, adding six assists to his 23 league goals, while averaging 3.10 shots per 90 minutes.

But his game was far more rounded than a traditional No.9.

He averaged 3.01 shot-creating actions per 90 and showed playmaking instincts with 2.88 progressive passes, alongside 2.71 progressive carries.

His passing was efficient, with 17 completed per 90 at a 75.3% success rate, and his progressive passing distance of 53.7 metres per game demonstrated his willingness to link play and stretch defences.

These numbers translated into key moments.

Isak scored in the Carabao Cup final as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1, securing silverware that had eluded the club for generations.

His performances meant Liverpool paid a record-breaking £125m to secure his services.

For Newcastle, the deal proved two things: Howe can develop signings into world-class players, and the club’s transfer model – investing in talent with potential, then reaping both sporting and financial rewards – works.

There could be another Isak in the works now too..

The next big project at Newcastle

If Isak is the model, Park Seung-Soo could be the next project.

Officially joining Newcastle from Suwon Bluewings in July, the 18-year-old South Korean is a raw but thrilling forward who has already shown flashes of promise.

At Suwon, he made 28 appearances, scoring once and assisting three, during a turbulent period that saw the four-time K League champions relegated for the first time in their history.

Despite the team’s struggles, Park stood out, becoming the youngest player in Korean league history at just 17 years and three months.

Comfortable across the front line but often deployed on the left, the right-footed forward has represented South Korea at U17 and U20 levels.

His playing style has already drawn high praise. Asian football expert John Duerden described Park as “similar to Mbappé.”

Suwon head coach Byun Sung-Hwan echoed that excitement, insisting, “Park has the ability to go to the top in football.”

Newcastle fans caught a glimpse of his potential in pre-season, where he earned rave reviews and was included in Howe’s matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Aston Villa.

Since then, he has featured in Premier League 2, still adjusting as the side searches for their first win of the campaign.

Beyond his footballing promise, Park’s signing also carries commercial weight.

Tottenham Hotspur reaped global rewards after Son Heung-min’s rise, and Newcastle will hope for a similar boost in Asia.

His modest market value of £150k, according to Transfermarkt, makes this a low-risk, high-upside signing that fits perfectly into the Magpies’ future-facing model.

Whether Park remains around the first team or heads out on loan remains to be seen, but Newcastle believe he can be nurtured into a star.

Howe has already proved he can transform players into elite-level operators, and if Park develops like Isak once did, Newcastle may again find themselves with one of Europe’s most exciting forwards.

IPL 2025 Orange Cap and Purple Cap – Sai Sudharsan climbs to No. 2

Find out who the top-three run-scorers and wicket-takers in IPL 2025 are

The Orange Cap tableNicholas Pooran is still the highest scorer following returns of 75 from 30 balls against Delhi Capitals (DC) and 70 from 26 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The first came batting second and the other batting first. He is also on top of the six-hitters’ leaderboard with 13 from two innings, and no one has a higher strike rate, at the moment, than his 258.92.It looks like B Sai Sudharsan isn’t scoring fast, but he can, as he has in his two innings in IPL 2025, going at 167.07 at this stage with eight sixes. That doesn’t put him anywhere near the top on the strike-rates’ table, but his 137 runs from two innings has him up at No. 2 on the Orange Cap table. Against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in GT’s season opener, Sudharsan scored 74, and against MI, 63 – he lasted exactly 41 balls both times. Good signs for GT at the top of the order.Mitchell Marsh, an opener like Sudharsan, is behind Pooran with 124 runs – 72 in 36 against DC and 52 in 31 against SRH – on LSG’s table, and No. 3 here. A batter-only this season as he returns from injury, Marsh’s consistent runs give LSG breathing room at the top.The Purple Cap tableIn the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Noor Ahmad removed on-song RCB opener Phil Salt for 32 – aided by MS Dhoni’s quick stumping – before dismissing Virat Kohli for 31. He returned to get Liam Livingstone to surpass Shardul Thakur’s tally of wickets. In the opening game against MI in Chennai, Noor picked up 4 for 18 in a Player-of-the-Match performance.Shardul Thakur is second with six wickets from two games. He had a Player-of-the-Match-winning 4 for 34 against SRH on Thursday night, getting rid of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan off consecutive balls in the third over, and later accounting for Abhinav Manohar and Mohammed Shami. An injury replacement for Mohsin Khan, Thakur picked up 2 for 19 in LSG’s first game, the loss to DC.RCB’s Josh Hazlewood entered the top three of the bowling charts on Friday with his performance against CSK. Hazlewood rocked the home team with two early wickets, removing opener Rahul Tripathi for 5 and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck. He returned in the 13th over to remove Ravindra Jadeja for 25 to finish with figures of 3 for 21. In the first match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he had 2 for 22.Highest batting strike ratesBest bowling economy ratesMost sixesBest bowling figures in a match

BCCI contracts: Shreyas and Kishan back, Pant gets upgrade

Retainers have been handed out to 34 players for the 2024-25 season – up from 30 the last time – with four players in the top category

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are back on the BCCI’s central contracts list for 2024-25 after being left out of it the previous time. The top tier of the contracts (A+) has four players – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. That’s unchanged apart from R Ashwin, who retired from international cricket late last year, being dropped. Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja have been retained in the top category despite retiring from T20Is after India won the T20 World Cup in June last year.Rishabh Pant has been promoted from Grade B to Grade A, which also has Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami.Pant had previously been in Grade A – for the 2022-23 season – but was moved down to Grade B after not playing for over a year following a horrific car crash in December 2022. He returned to play IPL 2024 and has since been part of all formats for India – he’s played ten Tests, one ODI and ten T20Is since then – and has returned to Grade A.Related

Iyer, meanwhile, is part of Grade B along with Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, while Kishan has been added to Grade C.The new entrants in the contracts’ list – all currently in Grade C – are Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, Abhishek Sharma, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep, Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana.Shardul Thakur, KS Bharat, Avesh Khan and Jitesh Sharma, who were all in the Grade C list – the lowest of the retainers – last year, have been dropped. The BCCI did not mention the amounts for the four contract categories, but ESPNcricinfo understands that they are likely to be INR 7 crore (A+), INR 5 crore (A), INR 3 crore (B) and INR 1 crore (C).ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Iyer and Kishan had lost their contracts last year after having made themselves unavailable for the domestic season. While Iyer had informed the Mumbai Cricket Association that he had been suffering from back spasms, Kishan had chosen to play the DY Patil T20 tournament instead of making a return to domestic cricket for Jharkhand. Kishan, too, returned to playing domestic cricket later, turning out for Jharkhand across formats in the 2024-25 season. The BCCI had asked in a statement at the time that “all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team”.Since then, Shreyas has had an excellent run across formats. He has been part of five title wins since March 2024: The IPL win with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as captain aside, he won the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, the 2024-25 Irani Cup, and the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy titles with Mumbai. He was also a key member of India’s title-winning Champions Trophy team, a tournament in which he finished as the second-highest run-getter with 243 runs in five innings.Varun, among the new entrants in the list, has risen through the ranks in the past year. He made a comeback in the T20I series against Bangladesh last year and has been a regular in the format since. He also went on to make his ODI debut last year and played in the Champions Trophy as well, where he picked up nine wickets in three matches. Liverpool in race to sign £168k-p/w Bayern contract rebel who Konate knows

Attempting to solve their centre-back problem, Liverpool have now reportedly joined the race to sign a defensive addition who already knows Ibrahima Konate well.

Leoni injury hands Liverpool fresh problem

Despite spending over £400m in the summer, Liverpool failed to address their centre-back problem. The Reds went all in on Marc Guehi, only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug on his Anfield move in the final hours of deadline day and leave Arne Slot without the added defender that he so desperately wanted.

Without Guehi, Liverpool were left with Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Now, on paper, that should have been enough to ease any worries, but Leoni’s ACL injury has since reignited those concerns. Set to be without the 18-year-old for the majority of the campaign, the Reds have just three senior centre-backs to choose from, with one of them being the injury-prone Gomez.

It’s a problem that Anfield chiefs could solve in the January transfer window and reports are already suggesting that any move for Guehi could be accelerated as a result.

According to Sky Sports, there is “acceptance” that the England international’s time at the club is coming to an end – be it in January or when his contract expires next summer. The big question is whether Liverpool remain front of the queue for his signature.

Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in Guehi, which could see the Reds suffer defeat against a familiar foe in the transfer market. Alas, if that does prove to be the case, it seems as though those at Anfield already have a backup plan in mind.

Liverpool join race to sign Upamecano

As reported by BILD, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Dayot Upamecano, with his £168,000-a-week Bayern Munich contract set to expire next summer. The Frenchman, who formed an impressive partnership next to Konate at RB Leipzig many moons ago, is on course to become a free agent and potentially hand the Reds an undeniable bargain as a result.

It’s set to be the summer of the contract rebels. Guehi looks almost certain to leave Palace either in January or as a free agent, whilst Upamecano could follow suit and Liverpool have their own contract issues with Konate.

The France international is yet to put pen to paper at Anfield and may yet join Trent Alexander-Arnold in Spain as a free agent amid interest from Real Madrid. It’s a move that would deal Liverpool another blow, but one that would also open the door for Upamecano.

Dubbed a “fantastic player” by France teammate Lucas Hernandez, last season’s numbers suggest that Liverpool wouldn’t necessarily be getting a downgrade on Konate in Upamecano. In fact, the Bayern star even outperformed his former Leipzig partner in a number of departments.

CSK's transition 'will develop on its own' even if Dhoni leaves, says Bangar

Aakash Chopra calls CSK’s batting order “a stopgap arrangement”, while Stephen Fleming says they have been “just patching innings up, rather than constructing good innings”

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-20252:19

Chopra: CSK should ‘probably trade’ Jadeja

If you lose ten of your 13 games in an IPL season, chances are that everything, from top to bottom and even beyond, will come under scrutiny. Such is life for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as they look to finish their commitments for the IPL 2025 season and go back to the drawing board, and when they do, Sanjay Bangar wants MS Dhoni to say “enough”, and Aakash Chopra wants seven – seven! – players to be released.”I’ve got a long list actually. I would release [R] Ashwin, [Ravindra] Jadeja, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi…” Chopra said in response to a question on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show after CSK’s latest defeat, this time to Rajasthan Royals (RR).Dhoni’s name didn’t figure in Chopra’s list, but Bangar doesn’t expect to see Dhoni playing one more season.Related

Fleming won't burn the CSK playbook after poor IPL season

Madhwal leads bowlers' show as RR end the season by beating CSK

“I think at 43 it’s very tough to play in that competitive environment. When you’re 43, why this competitive environment, even if you go and play some local cricket, you will find how tough it is on the body as well,” Bangar said in response to the question that has been asked pretty much every IPL season of late.”It all boils down to MS, but if I was MS, I would say ‘enough’. ‘Okay, I have played whatever I wanted to play, I have looked after the interest of the franchise’, if there’s any, if that was the motivation. But, you know, you move on.”By you being there, if you’re thinking that the transition will happen fast, there’s never an ideal time to pick. So you might as well [make] peace with the fact that, ‘okay, even if I leave now, the franchise will develop on its own; it will take a year longer, but I’m not going to be here for the entire cycle’. That’s how I would look at MS’ position if I was in that position.”Whether Dhoni chooses to stay or go, CSK could well be looking at an overhaul after what has been a horror season that started to turn pear-shaped early on, and only got worse. One of the players – another CSK veteran – who has come in for scrutiny is Jadeja, who was moved up to No. 4 and has struggled on more occasions than he has not.1:26

What should Dhoni do after this season?

“Probably trade him. You have Dewald Brevis as your No. 4. I will bat him at No. 4 [instead of Jadeja],” Chopra said. “And I am thinking that this won’t be the one-two-three any which way. This is a stopgap arrangement where you’ve got Devon Conway with Ayush Mhatre [opening] and Urvil Patel at No. 3. That is not going to be your one-two-three.”If you are releasing Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, it’s common sense that you will find somebody who can be an absolute banker at the top and probably [even] a destructor at the top. Why would you want Ruturaj Gaikwad to bat again with somebody who is not going hammer and tongs? I want to have Urvil Patel at three [and] I would rather have one more [overseas] guy… I mean, they need Noor Ahmad and [Matheesha] Pathirana, then you need two batters: either you get a finisher with Dewald Brevis, or you get a top-order batter with Dewald Brevis.”Like Chopra, Stephen Fleming, the CSK coach, said at the press conference after the loss to RR that the batting order was far from what the team had wanted, and it was just “patching innings up” at this point.3:01

Which players should CSK release ahead of the next auction?

“Our order is not right at this stage,” Fleming said. “That’s something that we are always looking to rejig. We’ve got some strong ideas for next year so that all facets are covered. But that hasn’t been possible this year because [of] lack of runs at the top. A lot of the batting positions are determined by how well a start we have, and then guys can fall into line. So we haven’t had that, so we’ve been just patching innings up, really, rather than constructing good innings.”The loss of Gaikwad, the captain, to an injury early on in the season was one setback that CSK, who have had many underperforming batters, couldn’t recover from.Bangar was also hoping for a sea change in terms of the approach for CSK between the end of the current season and the start of the next one.”If there are batters right at the top who are striking really well, and you have batters below you as well who are striking well in Brevis and in this case Shivam Dube – and they were hoping for better returns from all these players – do you require a player who has to do a particular job of holding that innings together as well,” he said when asked about Sam Curran often batting at No. 3 and Jadeja at No. 4. In fact, against RR, there was no Curran, but Ashwin at No. 4 and Jadeja at No. 5, which Chopra and Bangar agreed was far from ideal.
