What Rangers squad were told immediately before Danny Rohl agreed to join

Rangers players and staff were informed that a new manager had been chosen over the weekend, with Heart & Hand sharing insight into the message given by the club.

Rohl chosen as new Rangers manager

It has taken the Gers some time to bring in their next manager, with both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat deciding against taking the job, in two blows for the Scottish Premiership side.

It is Danny Rohl who will be Russell Martin’s successor at Ibrox, with the 36-year-old most recently in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, producing a miracle escape act with them in the Championship in 2023/24, before steadying the ship further last season.

The German is an exciting young manager with fresh ideas and a ball-playing approach, and while the Rangers job has become something of a poisoned chalice, supporters will be desperately hoping Rohl is the right man to take the club into the future.

Rangers players were told about new manager on Sunday

According to Heart & Hand Podcast, Rangers’ players were told that a new manager had been picked on Sunday evening, prior to Rohl being revealed as the man to take charge, so it seems the club’s leadership had already been closing in on the deal over the weekend, with just the finer points left to iron out on Monday.

Any Gers fans is likely going to feel trepidation about who the club appoint, considering the reigns of both Philippe Clement and Martin have been unsuccessful.

To some, a more experienced head than Rohl was needed – Sean Dyche had been mentioned, but he is becoming Nottingham Forest’s next boss instead – but to others, the German is a young coach with a huge amount to offer, having learned from Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich.

Rangers supporters should be buoyed by what Barry Bannan said about him recently, having thrived alongside one another at Wednesday.

“If he’s appointed, I definitely think he’ll go in there and get results right away. For me, he’s up gather with the very best I’ve worked with during my career. I know Glasgow can be a difficult environment because of the expectation at the Old Firm. But I would expect him to really hit the ground running because he’s the type of man people respond to.”

Rohl won't like him: Rangers must drop Ibrox star with "big potential"

It’s unlikely Smith will persist with this Rangers underperformer.

ByBen Gray Oct 20, 2025

Hopefully, this is the moment that Rangers change for the better, following a dreadful start to the season, but Rohl has a massive job on his hands, not least clawing back 13 and eight points on Hearts and Celtic, respectively, at the top of the table, and impressing in Europe.

Monaghan's maiden fifty puts Surrey out of Somerset's reach

Spinner Gregory takes 4 for 13 to complete emphatic 68-run win at The Oval

Surrey 175 for 6 (Monaghan 57*) beat Somerset 107 (Gregory 4-13) by 68 runsAlice Monaghan’s maiden T20 half-century was the catalyst for Surrey’s 68-run win over struggling Somerset to all but clinch top spot in the qualifying table. The Hampshire academy graduate, who missed part of the season with a broken finger struck four sixes in her 57 (32), sharing a stand of 85 for the fifth wicket with Emma Jones (34) in Surrey’s imposing 175 for 6. Chloe Skelton (2 for 20) and Erin Vukusic took two wickets apiece for Somerset. In the face of a brilliant fielding display in which Alice Capsey and Kalea Moore both took catches which had to be seen to be believed, Somerset were never in the hunt in reply, bowled out for 107 with spinner Dani Gregory finishing with 4 for 13.Skipper Bryony Smith struck three early boundaries only for Alex Griffiths to cut her surge short with a superb diving catch on the mid-wicket fence.Kira Chathli had her leg-stump uprooted by Vukusic without scoring and after a typically aggressive start, Grace Harris was squared up by one which kept low and given out lbw to Mollie Robins, meaning Surrey lost three wickets in the powerplay.Capsey, who’d been promoted to open, looked in ominous form, a lovely straight drive off Olivia Barnes the pick of her four boundaries, but she lost strike at a key time before becoming Skelton’s second victim. At 68 for 4 Surrey were wobbling, but Monaghan played a great hand, twice striking Amanda-Jade Wellington for huge sixes, while her other two maximums went over mid-on and onto the rope behind square.Another of Surrey’s big-hitters Emma Jones struggled at first before clearing the ropes on her way to 34.Phoebe Franklin weighed in with an enterprising cameo meaning Somerset would need their biggest score of the tournament to win.Wicketkeeper Rebecca Odgers gave early impetus before cutting Moore to short third and Ruby Davis was within inches following her back to the pavilion when all-but bowled by a huge Alexa Stonehouse inswinger in the following over.Scare survived, Davis lapped Ryana MacDonald-Gay for four, but her reprieve was short-lived as the England ODI seamer’s retort was to spread-eagle her stumps later in the over.Skipper Niamh Holland survived a run out chance when stranded halfway down the pitch to club successive fours from MacDonald-Gay’s next over, but she too couldn’t go on, losing her middle-stump to Gregory’s first ball.By now the rate required was above 10 and Moore returned to turn the screw a little tighter with the wicket of Fran Wilson caught in the deep by Jones. The home side’s fielding backed up the bowlers, Harris twice saving boundaries with last-ditch dives, making it all the harder for Somerset to build any momentum.Moore’s superb catch cut short of England all-rounder Danielle Gibson’s Somerset debut and Capsey produced an even better one at full stretch to remove Wellington as the visitors fell away.

Casemiro isn't the only Man Utd star who has saved his career under Amorim

Manchester United’s run of three wins in a row came to an end away to Nottingham Forest.

The Red Devils were held 2-2 by Sean Dyche’s side. A late goal ensured that Ruben Amorim’s side will travel back up to Manchester with a point.

It was the Red Devils who took the lead in the first half. United midfielder Casemiro got himself on the scoresheet for a second consecutive game, this time scoring a header from a corner, delivered by Bruno Fernandes.

Despite going into the break 1-0 up, United were soon trailing. Within five minutes of the restart, Forest took the lead. Morgan Gibbs-White headed home a cross from Rob Yates before Nicolo Savona got on the end of a scrap in the penalty box and tapped in from yards out.

It needed something special for United to find an equaliser, and luckily, that was provided to them by Amad. The Ivorian winger sweetly struck a volley from the edge of the area on his left foot, with his first-time effort nestling into the back of the net.

Despite the result, Casemiro’s performance will certainly please Amorim.

Casemiro's performance vs. Forest

Brazil international Casemiro has enjoyed a spectacular rejuvenation under Amorim. Once told to “leave the football before the football leaves you” by Jamie Carragher, United’s number 18 showed at the City Ground why he is such a key player.

After his goal and assist against Brighton last weekend, the experienced midfielder was back in the goals. His header came relatively unchallenged from Fernandes’ corner, although there is a debate as to whether or not a corner was the right decision. It is not clear that the ball went out.

His numbers across the game show how well he played. Casemiro completed 82% of his passes and created an impressive three chances. The former Real Madrid star also won 10 duels and three out of three tackles.

Steven Railston, Red Devils journalist for the Manchester Evening News, gave United’s midfield general a 6/0 for his efforts. He noted the “brilliant” goal and explained that it was his first 90 minutes of the season in the top flight.

Casemiro’s performance was certainly an impressive one. He has been able to turn his career under Amroim around and is now a key player.

However, he is not the only player in that mould who stood out at the City Ground.

Another Man Utd star has revived his career

There were certainly some strong performers in a United shirt despite the fact that they could only manage a draw in Nottingham. Casemiro was, of course, one of those players, and he ended up scoring a crucial goal.

At the other end of the pitch, it was another experienced player who stood out for the Red Devils. Luke Shaw has enjoyed a huge rejuvenation under Amorim this season, too, and his performance against Forest was commanding.

Operating in that left centre-back role once again, the England international was excellent off the ball, winning seven duels from nine attempted. As you would expect from a player with his technical quality, Shaw completed 61 out of 67 passes.

One person who saw how well Shaw played against the men in Garibaldi Red was United fan channel host Mark Goldbridge. He said the Red Devils’ number 23 was the “best player on the pitch” in the first half.

That certainly sums up how well the England defender performed at the City Ground. He was excellent off the ball and offered great progression when he had it. After a tough season with injury last year, the United defender has shone in 2025/26.

Shaw has certainly turned his career under Amorim around, becoming a key part of his back three. The game against Forest was a prime example of his class.

Amorim has homegrown Wharton in Man Utd star who had a "meteoric rise"

Manchester United may already have their own version of Adam Wharton at the club.

Amir and Carty play the starring roles as Knight Riders end Falcons jinx

Keacy Carty and Alex Hales put on an 87-run stand for the second wicket in the Knight Riders’ chase after the bowlers had set a modest target for them

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2025

Nicholas Pooran finished the game with a huge six off Jayden Seales with eight balls and eight wickets in the bank, but Trinbago Knight Riders’ jinx-breaking win over Antigua and Barbuda Falcons (they had lost all three games prior to this one) on Wednesday night in CPL 2025 had been all-but confirmed well before that.First, by Mohammad Amir, Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein, who picked up seven wickets between them to set up a chase of 147. And then by a partnership worth 87 runs between Alex Hales and Keacy Carty for the second wicket, which took its time (73 balls), but Knight Riders were never in a hurry.Related

Colin Munro: 'If you don't score, it's not the end of the world'

In between, young McKenny Clarke pulled off a most remarkable catch in the deep, running to intercept a shot off Jewel Andrew, Falcons’ best batter on the night, and then just sticking a hand out and finding the ball in it.It was all rather comprehensive for Knight Riders, who had lost all their three games against Falcons before this one, and gave them a big start to their home leg, while also taking them to No. 2, just behind Falcons, on the points table.Pooran, though, had done exactly what Knight Riders wanted him to at the start, winning the toss and giving Amir & Co a chance to have a go at the Falcons batters. Amir was on the job right away, trapping Rahkeem Cornwall lbw second ball and doing the same to Karima Gore off the fifth ball of the over.

The comeback came from Andrew, in the main, and Andries Gous, as Falcons made 43 runs in the powerplay, giving them a bit of a base to build from. Except that Hosein soon sent back Gous, who made a slow 17-ball 14, and Shakib Al Hasan (13 from 14), and then came that catch from Clarke, which ended Andrew’s stay at 40 from 31 balls. Russell, the bowler, also sent back Fabian Allen in the same over, leaving Falcons at a precarious 71 for 6.Another fightback was in order for the table-toppers, and it came from captain Imad Wasim and his countrymate Usama Mir. Imad ended with 37 not out in 25 balls and Mir 34 in 26, and Falcons had at least something to play with. And when Shakib got rid of the in-form Colin Munro in the fourth over, there was hope in the Falcons camp. But that’s when Hales, slow to start with and then at pace with the requirement, and Carty got together, batted till the middle of the 16th over, and left the rest of the Knight Riders batters with very little to do. Carty got to his half-century first, finishing with 60 from 45 before being the second man out.Hales, though, stayed put, completed his half-century, and remained unbeaten on 55 off 46 balls when Pooran finished the game, himself unbeaten on an 11-ball 23.

Arteta can fix Gabriel injury blow by unleashing Arsenal's £45m "beast"

All Arsenal supporters prayed for this international break was no injuries, but those prayers certainly have not been answered.

On Saturday, at their own home Emirates Stadium no less, Gabriel hobbled off around an hour into Brazil’s 2-0 friendly victory over Senegal in North London.

Reports suggest he has suffered an adductor injury, the severity of which is not yet known, but any absence would be a massive blow.

To make matters worse, Riccardo Calafiori has returned home early from the Italy camp, sitting out the Azzurri’s Thursday night victory over Moldova in Chișinău.

Head Coach Gennaro Gattuso stated “he tried to be available, but he can’t force it now”, which has to be worrying for Mikel Arteta, considering the 23-year-old’s injury history.

Both players have started all 11 Premier League fixtures to date, so to be without both considering the Gunners’ next three fixtures, Tottenham (H), Bayern Munich (H) and then Chelsea (A), could be a massive issue.

Nevertheless, Arteta boasts an ideal deputy already.

The numbers behind Arsenal's defensive solidity

Prior to last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland, Arsenal had kept eight successive clean sheets, equaling a club record set in 1903.

The statistics back up how dominant a defence Arteta’s side has been this season to date.

As the table documents, Arsenal rank first for every defensive metric out there in the Premier League this season.

Their tally of seven clean sheets has been achieved while facing only 21 shots on target, with some jokingly suggesting that David Raya could request to start working from home, even if the Spaniard has pulled off some extraordinary saves in fairness to him.

However, both Gabriel and Calafiori have been such key contributors to this solidity, supporters may be concerned as to how Arteta’s team will fare in their absence, but do they have a ready-made quality player waiting to step in?

How Arsenal can solve their defensive injury blows

After last season was completely derailed by injuries, Arsenal recruited heavily in the summer to avoid a similar eventuality and a sense of déjà vu.

In terms of defenders, Cristhian Mosquera arrived from Valencia for £13m, and the Spaniard has been excellent every time he has featured, with Sid Lowe of the Guardian noting that everyone in North London agrees that he is an absolute ‘bargain’.

By contrast, the summer signing that went under the radar the most was the arrival of Piero Hincapié on deadline day, joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen but with a £45m obligation to buy, a not insignificant outlay, so after a few weeks watching from the wings, is their Gabriel and Saliba hybrid about to be thrust into the spotlight?

Upon his arrival, Arteta noted that the 23-year-old possesses a “real physical presence”, praising his “versatility and tactical flexibility”, thereby bolstering the team’s “defensive options”, which is certainly pertinent now.

Meanwhile, U23 scout Antonio Mango has described him as “an absolute beast”, and his agent has gone further than that, calling him “a warrior” and “a leader.” It’s easy to see why he’s drawn comparisons to the club’s two main centre-halves.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

During his four seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, Hincapié made 166 appearances for die Werkself, a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s side that won both the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal unbeaten in 2023/24, delivering the club’s first-ever Meisterschale.

He has also been part of a rock-solid defence at international level, starting 14 of Ecuador’s 18 World Cup qualifiers as Sebastián Beccacece’s team conceded only five goals throughout the entire campaign, equalling the South American record.

As outlined by Phil Costa of Arseblog, Hincapié’s greatest strength is his ability to play both as a reliable centre-back but also as an attacking left-wing-back, excelling in both roles under Alonso, labelling him ‘aggressive’ and ‘unashamedly South American’, highlighting his ‘strong recovery pace’.

Well, considering that both Calafiori and Gabriel are now major doubts for Sunday’s North London derby, Hincapié is likely to start, either as a left-back or left-sided centre-back.

The alternative options are Myles Lewis-Skelly and the aforementioned Mosquera, but Arteta is unlikely to bring in such a young duo together, while he has proven that he favours a left-footed left-centre-back, Pablo Marí and Jakub Kiwior among many examples, suggesting the Ecuadorian will get the nod in the middle alongside William Saliba.

During Arsenal’s recent victory over Slavia Prague, the 1,000 or so Gooners who had made the trip to the Czech capital spent much of the afternoon and evening singing Hincapié’s new song.

One line includes the lyrics “the Arsenal get excited when they see you play”, which is just as well, given that he is set for a prominent role in crucial upcoming fixtures.

Better than Gyokeres & Havertz: £27m star is now Arsenal's "best finisher"

Once Arsenal’s injured players come back, Viktor Gyökeres’ place in the team could be under threat from their “best finisher” who is not Kai Havertz.
