Liam Cooper’s recent actions show why he’s the perfect captain for Leeds

Leeds United have had some great captains throughout their history. The likes of Billy Bremner, John Charles and Lucas Radebe are three absolute legends at Elland Road, and they made the club proud while wearing the captain’s armband. The Whites aren’t quite at the level they were at when those three were playing, but they do have a leader that they can be incredibly proud of.Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Liam Cooper’s recent actions didn’t paint him in the best light, but his reaction to the incident against Fulham is commendable.

Cooper’s tweet explains the incident, and he’s gone a long way towards rectifying the situation by sending an apology alongside some gifts to the child.

That’s exactly what every footballer should do when they’re in the wrong, and Cooper is setting a good example not only to his teammates but also to supporters.

The maturity the defender has shown in holding his hands up and admitting his faults is admirable, and everyone could learn a thing or two from his attitude after being caught red-handed.

Of course, we can’t excuse speaking to a child in that way, and the original incident is something that doesn’t belong in football. However, this is an emotional sport, and while we don’t condone the foul language, we understand that there are few situations with as much pressure as playing in a professional match.

Cooper wasn’t right to do what he did, but it shows a will to win. He wanted to get the ball back as quickly as possible, and he was mature enough to then admit what he did was wrong and work towards rectifying the situation.

Juventus finally have the right stance on Merih Demiral’s future at the club

According to new information gathered by Goal, Juventus have no intention of selling Merih Demiral, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, as the youngster is starting to earn Maurizio Sarri’s trust.

What’s the word, then?

The 21-year-old defender has been used rather sparingly this season and to this point in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign, he has only managed to tally 450 minutes across five games in all competitions.

Even though we are talking about a rather young player who’s still at the very beginning of his career, those figures are still low and he needs minute in order to properly continue his development.

But Goal understand that Sarri is warming to the prospect of having Demiral in his squad and as a result, the Bianconeri won’t allow any potential suitors to snatch him away in January.

It seems there is not really a lack of interest but the interested clubs are all likely to end up disappointed as the 21-year-old is bound to stay put in Turin – a development that feels like the right move for Sarri.

The best is yet to come

Even though his minute tally wouldn’t really suggest that Sarri has changed his mind on Demiral – considering he can still only boast with five games under his belt in 2019/20 – it’s important to note that the vast majority of his appearances have arrived in recent weeks.

While he spent most of the campaign warming the bench, the 21-year-old has completed the full 90 minutes of Juventus’ last two clashes in Serie A, their final Champions League game and also their most recent Cup venture.

This is a big indication that he’s indeed being gradually reintroduced to the squad. Of course, having competition from the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and veterans like Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, it’s natural that he has struggled for game time.

But there’s plenty of potential already visible in the youngster.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Arsenal’s history in the January transfer window?

Back at Sassuolo, he made 14 appearances and averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 5.6 clearances and 0.8 blocks per game, which are, especially for such a young player, rather impressive figures.

And for that reason, Arsenal’s interest doesn’t really come as a surprise.

With their backline ageing and having already leaked 30 goals in 21 Premier League clashes, reinforcements are needed.

Demiral could refresh their squad, add some much-needed quality and youth, and continue his development under Arteta.

Both David Luiz and Sokratis are over 30 and not getting any younger, so the Bianconeri gem definitely looks like a great scoop if they can make it happen.

But with Juventus’ new stance and Sarri’s renewed trust, the Gunners might hit a brick wall in their pursuit.

Charlton need Lee Bowyer to rework his magic with Conor Gallagher

It has been reported by football.london that various clubs are hoping to recruit Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.

The 19-year-old has excelled at Charlton Athletic this season, which has led the likes of Rangers, Burnley, Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion all being interested in signing him on a temporary basis.

Charlton are hoping that the midfielder will see out the entirety of his loan spell with them, due to how integral a part of their season he has been up until this point.

That is because in 24 Championship starts and one substitute appearance, he has scored six goals and added a further two assists.

Outside of that, he has averaged 1.9 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.8 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game, while he is also fouled 2.1 times.

Therefore, it is vital that the Addicks are able to keep hold of him, with Lee Bowyer having the potential to be an important part of that happening.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

This point is supported by the role he played in Josh Cullen staying at the Valley for the current campaign, following an initial successful spell.

The Republic of Ireland international had played 29 times in the League One campaign that saw them promoted via the play-offs, while he also played in the cross that led to the winner in the final.

He joined for a second loan period following that success and later revealed the part Bowyer played in ensuring that happened:

“Bows was one of the main reasons I joined Charlton in the first place. It’s easy to learn from a manager like that and, from when I joined last season up to now, I’ve loved playing under him.

“Every day in training, learning from him and getting little chats here and there, he’s given me pointers which I’ve thought is helping me improve so I’m loving my time at Charlton.”

With Gallagher reportedly split on whether or not to stay at the Valley, Bowyer may need to rework his magic to ensure that the teenager remains at Charlton for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, Charlton have been linked with a player who was once wanted by Barcelona.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Sam Winnall could leave if Garry Monk gets his wish

Sheffield Wednesday are currently sitting in the playoff picture, some ten points off the automatic promotion places, but their season could depend on the following month after the Owls suffered a devastating blow to top goalscorer Steven Fletcher.

Monk’s wish?

The 32-year-old is set to miss the next eight to ten weeks after picking up a severe knee injury during their historic FA Cup victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

It has led to comments from Garry Monk this week suggesting that he would like to see a striker join before they host Blackburn Rovers in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls boss said:

“Of course, I would like to bring someone in as soon as possible but it is not always as easy as that because it is not just you trying to get someone. There can be other factors like other clubs.“But, of course, you want to try and get them in as early as possible so they can used to how we work and what you need from them and how they fit into the group.”Wednesday have been linked to a host of forwards in the past week or so, including Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, Crystal Palace’s Connor Wickham, Southampton’s Che Adams and even Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle. Likely consequences?

If Monk can clinch any of these – or even someone else – then it seems rather likely that a departure would soon ensue. The fact that he says he needs another striker speaks volumes as he has four other options in the role despite Fletcher’s injury.

One of Jordan Rhodes, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu would surely be heading towards an exit.

Choosing one of the above is the next task for the 40-year-old, he can’t keep them all happy.

The player most at risk would surely be Winnall as the others all offer something completely different to the side, such as Forestieri’s flair, Nuhiu’s battering-ram presence and Jordan Rhodes natural goalscoring ability.

Winnall was signed by Carlos Carvalhal back in January 2017, three years to the day earlier this week. His time at Hillsborough has been nothing short of poor, scoring just five goals in 40 appearances.

That’s one goal every eight games and he’s been here for three years. It’s fair to suggest that he’s been a flop and his latest chance against Leeds United provided a similar outcome.

It may have been the last time that the former Barnsley man has put on the Owls shirt, should Monk get his wishes this week.

While in other news, Monk’s latest squad decision highlights a damning worry to the future of the Owls…

Newcastle are set to sign Nabil Bentaleb on loan

Newcastle have been linked with a move for Schalke’s Nabil Bentaleb and according to The Times’ Martin Hardy, the deal could be completed very soon.

What’s the latest?

The Magpies have been scouring the transfer market for central midfielders this month but so far have come up short in their approach for Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury.

Nice’s Wylan Cyprien was another touted but it seems that targeting Bentaleb may just pay off, with the 25-year-old reportedly set to undergo a medical that will see him join until the end of the season.

In a tweet Hardy wrote:

Astute signing

The addition of the Algeria international ticks a lot of boxes for Newcastle and has the potential to serve them well for the rest of the season and perhaps beyond, too.

After spending significant sums, £16.5m on Allan Saint-Maximin and £40m on Joelinton in the summer, it is understandable if Mike Ashley isn’t keen to throw loads more money at Steve Bruce.

It seems that the Magpies’ boss is, as a result, having to take the loan route to bring in reinforcements, but given Bentaleb’s pedigree and what he has produced in a relatively short career, bringing him in should fill supporters with optimism.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…

He has played 66 times for Tottenham and really impressed when he first arrived in Germany, scoring seven goals and making five assists in his first campaign abroad to earn a £16m move.

It may not have worked out for him this term with two appearances made but Bruce has got the best out of a lot of players so far, including his midfielders.

Jonjo Shelvey has looked rejuvenated with five goals to his name while Isaac Hayden has also been very effective with 2.4 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game, as well as scoring the winning goal against Chelsea on Saturday.

As a result, Bentaleb could be a good fit at St. James’ Park and the loan spell will allow Bruce to assess whether to make a permanent move for him. With his contract set to expire in 2021 he might well be cheaper to acquire over the summer months.

That alone should provide the player with enough motivation to work hard and impress, and if he offers that Newcastle may reap the rewards.

Meanwhile, another player Newcastle have been linked with could have quite and effect on the rest of the team.

Southampton: 2 reasons why Ryan Manning should be signed over Joe Bryan

Southampton currently have a slight issue in terms of their depth in the left-back position.

Only Ryan Bertrand could be considered a senior option in the role at St Mary’s right now, with 19-year-old Jake Vokins – who started, and scored in, the recent 2-0 FA Cup win over Huddersfield – another potential option.

Even midfield man Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has featured at left-back once this season.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl has hinted that the teenage Vokins isn’t quite ready yet, so the Saint could do with a fresh face in that area.

“Jake’s very, very forward oriented but the reverse gear sometimes takes a bit longer, especially the duels in defence are not always clinical and strong enough. It’s up to us to work with him and make him better and this is what we’ll do.”

Incidentally, two players – both from the Championship – have been linked, and they are vastly similar.

Who are they?

Well, Football Insider report that QPR left-back Ryan Manning is in Southampton’s sights ahead of a potential swoop this month, with the Republic of Ireland man enjoying a fine campaign under Mark Warburton which has seen him score one goal and grab four assists.

The 23-year-old also makes 2.1 tackles per game and delivers 1.9 crosses per 90 minutes in the Championship.

Another left-back to be linked with the Saints – again reported by Football Insider – is Joe Bryan. The Fulham man has also scored one goal and registered four assists, although he makes 2.8 tackles and whips 0.7 crosses in per game.

The report states that the Cottagers have slapped a £7m asking price on the former Bristol City man’s head.

Judging by these stats, the pair are quite similar in their roles.

Two reasons why Southampton should choose Manning over Bryan

While the pair are very alike in their work, there are two reasons why the Saints should opt for Manning instead of Bryan.

For a start, the QPR No.14 is three years younger than the 26-year-old Cottagers star, which means that Southampton will be making a better long-term investment by placing their faith in the former Galway United man.

Additionally, the 23-year-old’s contract is set to expire on the 30th June of this year, which leaves the R’s in a poor negotiating position and means Hasenhuttl could get the Irishman on the cheap this month.

It is for these two reasons why Southampton should look towards the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium rather than Craven Cottage in their hunt for a new left-back – Manning’s age and contract situation just edges him ahead of Bryan in this tightly-fought statistical comparison.

Crystal Palace fans react as three players depart Selhurst Park on deadline day

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club’s official account confirmed the departures of three players on loan deals until the end of the campaign.

Academy figures Dion Curtis-Henry and Giovanni McGregor – aged 22 and 21 respectively – have been loaned out to National League South sides, with Henry joining Hampton & Richmond Borough while McGregor links up with Dartford.

Scott Banks – who was only recently signed from Scottish Championship outfit Dundee United – has been loaned straight back to the very same division with Alloa United, who are actually second-bottom in the league whereas Dundee United sit top of the tree.

Crystal Palace also confirmed that two more academy players had left the club on deadline day – one on a permanent basis, and one more on loan.

Jason Lokilo teamed up with Doncaster Rovers on Friday evening, while James Daly ended five-and-a-half years at Selhurst Park to join Bristol Rovers.

Let’s see how the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

To kick off the reaction, Mandy Morgan said “embarrassing transfer window!” – we can understand her frustration as, despite the three men being nothing but fringe options, tweeting that players have left when no signings have come the other way on deadline day is never going to go down well with supporters.

Elsewhere, these three supporters also took aim at the club.

Harry and John both mocked the fact that the Eagles were weakening a squad that was already pretty thin, with the latter fan calling the south Londoners a “joke club”.

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

Also, @aaroncritchard1 also called Crystal Palace a “joke club” – the natives are restless, to say the least.

Meanwhile, Richard implied that the trio will never have a future at Selhurst Park following their loan deals by saying “never to be seen again” after learning of their departures – harsh.

Lastly, Andrew went off on a rant.

He echoed the aforementioned thoughts of Harry and John by saying that the club are currently weaker in personnel than they started the window, before calling the board “an absolute joke” – Andrew also said that the club’s “recruitment is a joke”.

3 experts on Manchester City’s target Unai Nunez

According to reports from El Gol Digital, Manchester City are keen on Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez. They billed him as a January target but it must be said that with so little of the transfer window remaining, a deal at this point seems rather unlikely.

Nonetheless, Football Fancast sought out the opinions of those who know him best to gauge whether he’d be a good fit at the Etihad…

Kuko Ziganda, former Bilbao coach

It was Ziganda who first promoted the emerging talent into the Bilbao first team reckoning and following an immediate and impressive impact his decision was proven to be a shrewd one.

Speaking at various press conferences he routinely failed to hide his delight at the youngster’s accelerating development. As per InsideAthletic.com here and here:

“He is the joy of the year because he plays with a spark and with ambition. You can see that every day in training.”

“If he is on the field it’s because we believe he’s going to do things well. I know what he’s capable of and he can still play better. That doesn’t mean we’re not happy with him. I’m very pleased with his performances.”

Inigo Martinez, Bilbao team-mate

Having established himself as a ball-playing but resilient defender for Los Leones, international recognition duly arrived last September for Nunez with a first full cap for Spain. Ahead of a comfortable 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands club team-mate Martinez was keen to suggest the recognition was wholly warranted.  As per Athletic Club:

‘He deserves it because every time he has played he has done it wonderfully. He is a teammate with whom I spend a lot of time in the changing room and I’m very happy that he has been called and that he has been able to make his debut.”

Gaizka Garitano – Athletic Bilbao coach

As the transfer whispers loudened Garitano felt compelled recently to state the club’s position on their star man. In doing so he revealed a good deal about his admiration for the Basque-born centre-half.

As per InsideAthletic.com

“He’s an important player for us, a player for the present and future of the club and it’s in his hands to stay. We’ll see. I hope he stays because we don’t want to lose a player of such value to us.”

Verdict

The last occasion Manchester City shopped in Bilbao they picked up Aymeric Laporte for a club record fee. That too was in January, with the defender swiftly improving the Blues’ status at the back. There is no reason to believe that history cannot be repeated here.

Crystal Palace: Dominic Fifield delivers honest verdict on Nathan Ferguson

The Athletic’s Dominic Fifield has provided an honest verdict on Nathan Ferguson and Crystal Palace’s chances of going back in for the full-back this summer. The West Brom No.36 underwent a medical with the south Londoners just days before the transfer deadline, with a view to completing a move to Selhurst Park worth a potential £11m in total. However, complications with the medical tests emerged, as the 19-year-old had a knee issue which the Eagles felt required immediate surgery and the recovery period would rule him out for the rest of the current campaign – the Baggies, on the other hand, did not think it was that serious.

Eventually, the move collapsed, but Fifield has now provided an honest verdict on whether or not the south Londoners will return for the teenager’s services.

What did he say?

When asked if he thinks Crystal Palace “will try again” for Ferguson, Fifield said: “Yes, but a lot can happen between now and then”.

The Eagles certainly should go back in

As Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard tweeted recently, Ferguson was of interest to clubs from across the continent.

Fifield even mentions in his article detailing how the move broke down that Juventus, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan were all ‘tracking his progress’ – this is a highly-rated, precocious young talent who Crystal Palace must obtain, so long as his knee issue isn’t a career-threatening one.

Aside from his humongous potential, the need for another full-back is undoubtedly huge.

Only Joel Ward stands before Roy Hodgson as a natural option, whereas Patrick van Aanholt is the former England boss’ only natural left-back – as it happens, Ferguson can play on both sides, having made 12 appearances on the left and nine on the right this season.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

It would make sense for the Eagles to return for Ferguson, and Fifield’s honest verdict provides a glimmer of hope towards that happening.

Ex-Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles replies to Calvert-Lewin Instagram post

The in-form 22-year-old was pictured in a fashionable and interesting outfit in the famous American city, consisting of a pin-stripe style blazer and matching trousers, complete with a satchel – something the former Sheffield United man was keen to point out in the tagline to the post.

Former Toffees goalkeeper Joel Robles, who spent five years at Goodison Park before departing for Real Betis in the summer of 2018, responded with a quartet of flame emojis, clearly showing his appreciation for his ex-teammate’s picture and choice of clothing.

Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, will be looking to enjoy the rest of his break in ‘the Big Apple’ before returning to England, and will be hoping to continue his fine form this season.

The centre-forward has established himself as a regular in the starting XI this term, scoring 13 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions including eight in his previous 11 Premier League appearances.
