Leeds United’s chances of ending a 16-year wait for Premier League football has taken a huge dent over the weekend after fresh reports emerged about how they may conclude the top-flight season.The BBC claim that ‘a growing number’ of teams are open to the idea of playing the remaining fixtures at neutral venues, but only if the threat of relegation was removed.Brighton and Hove Albion are one club who have gone against the idea, stating they are “not in favour” of playing at neutral stadiums as it affects the “integrity” of the competition – they currently sit 15th, two points from the drop zone.The Athletic’s Phil Hay was asked about this situation and how it might affect the Whites, he replied:

Liverpool supporters have been going wild on Twitter this week after The Athletic’s James Pearce relayed huge news from the Premier League.

On Monday it was announced that teams in the top-flight would resume training ahead of a potential return to action. Players will have to train in small groups and keep to social distance guidelines. Contact training is still not permitted whilst those involved will be tested twice per week.

This comes as major delight to many at Anfield as it means that the idea of a ‘null and void’ season is put on the backburner – something they don’t want to see given they are on the verge of landing their first-ever Premier League trophy.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are some 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City having lost just one game all season with only nine matches remaining.

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to laugh at Juventus, after Tuttosport claimed that the reigning Serie A champions were preparing a €50m offer for Mohamed Salah, in which they would also thrown in Paulo Dybala.

The 25-year-old Argentina international has hit just two league goals so far this season, which, compared to Salah’s 17 strikes, does not make for a good negotiating stance in terms of a player-plus-cash deal for the side from Turin.

The Egyptian international is the Reds’ most important player by a country mile, with his goals firing them to a Champions League final last season and could yet fire them to the Premier League title time around.

Dybala is an excellent player, but there probably isn’t a player on earth barring Lionel Messi that Liverpool fans would swap Salah for.

That sentiment seems to have been echoed by the reactions of the Merseysiders’ fan base on Twitter, who aren’t interested in the potential deal not one bit….

Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe has been sidelined with a knee injury, as reported by the BBC.

The 26-year-old is the Whites’ top scorer so far this season, having racked up 14 goals in 26 Championship outings, as per Transfermarkt’s stats. His absence will come as a major blow to manager Marcelo Bielsa, especially at such a crucial time in the season, with Leeds in the thick of the title race.

The Argentine coach will have to find a way to make his team work without Roofe, beginning with Saturday’s visit of struggling Bolton Wanderers to Elland Road.

Leeds’ squad is already small, as is Bielsa’s preference. However, that does make dealing with Roofe’s injury an even greater challenge.

Leeds’ style of play this season is very defined and highly particular. Bielsa has encouraged the Whites to play aggressive, intense, high-pressing football. Throughout this campaign, Roofe has played a key role within this system.

The attacker has the stamina, energy and work rate to relentlessly harry opponents and defend from the front. Whoever comes into the starting XI to replace the Englishman must replicate his contribution in this regard.

Maintaining the intensity

In recent weeks, following the return to fitness of 25-year-old No. 9 Patrick Bamford, Roofe has dropped deeper, into the No. 10 role behind the striker. 

Bamford will likely start against Bolton, meaning it is in this No. 10 berth where Roofe must be replaced. The two most obvious candidates for this vacancy are Tyler Roberts and Pablo Hernandez. 

The 33-year-old Hernandez would bring a great deal of guile and invention to this task. However, 20-year-old Roberts could provide more energy.

Bielsa should give the younger man the chance to shine on Saturday. At this stage in the season, it is vital that Leeds can maintain their intensity, and the inclusion of Roberts gives them their best chance of doing so.

The Eagles’ 4-1 win over the Foxes saw them defend diligently and hit their hosts on the counter-attack again and again, with Michy Batshuayi leading an attacking trident which Wilfried Zaha seems to be enjoying – the Ivorian bagged a brace against Claude Puel’s men.

There was an element of luck about the result and it has to be said that their opponents on Saturday weren’t at their best; going about the United clash the same way could easily see the Selhurst Park outfit on the receiving end of a drubbing.

Instead, going with an approach that has been tried and tested against top-six opposition may be better if Hodgson wants to pull off another shock result.

Townsend’s legs crucial, Zaha won’t be happy

The incredible 3-2 victory over Manchester City in December saw Hodgson opt for a 4-5-1 formation in an attempt to suffocate the champions’ often sublime build-up play and it worked brilliantly – albeit the three points were won in no small part thanks to Andros Townsend’s volley.

The 13-cap England international’s thunderbolt surely made most forget about the excellent work he did in defence, though – his tracking back was essential and he did all he could to help out Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whom he was deployed just in front of.

This work-rate will be essential again against the Red Devils, 45% of their attacks come down their left-flank, particularly if Wan-Bissaka is still unfit – the impressive youngster missed the Leicester clash and Joel Ward deputised at right-back.

Townsend seems happy to run all game long, but Zaha is less inclined to track back and he would be gutted if Hodgson took this approach – the Ivorian thrives off of freedom on the pitch, of which he would have considerably less in a 4-5-1, whether he would be deployed as a lone striker or on the opposite flank to his fellow attacker.

Switching away from a formation that is beginning to look like a winning formula might be unthinkable, but doing so gives Palace their best chance of upsetting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co.

Chris Sutton has launched a scathing attack on Liverpool fans following the Merseyside Derby, in which the Reds drew 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park.

The Reds have been accused of being ‘bottle-jobs’ after blowing a seven-point lead over Manchester City, and are appearing to play with a lot more nerves as opposed to their free-flowing, attacking flamboyancy that they showed earlier in the season.

However, Sutton disagrees with claims that Jurgen Klopp’s men are bottling it, and has instead suggested that the club’s fanbase are the ones losing their nerve.

What’s he said?

The BT Sport pundit said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is ridiculous to say Liverpool are bottling it.

“It is not down to mental fatigue that they are struggling. It is not over yet, there are nine games to go.

“Liverpool fans are bottling it, not the players.”

Sutton is 100% right

We mustn’t forget that this is a side who finished fourth on 75 points last season who are the ones going head-to-head with the reigning champions – not just champions, but centurions.

It could be argued that Liverpool are overachieving, and to even be this much of a thorn in City’s side is a credit to Klopp and his team for their efforts this season.

Citizens forward Raheem Sterling even revealed recently that playing for Liverpool comes with added pressure from the fans on matchdays – it seems like the Anfield faithful are so desperate for a Premier League title that their collective nervous energy is affecting the players.

There are still nine games to go, 27 points to be won or lost, and the Reds still have a valid chance to win a maiden Premier League title – if you’d have offered that to their fans at the start of the season, they’d have bitten your hand off.

Liverpool fans just need to stay calm.
