Sheffield Wednesday fans will not be able to quite believe the run of form Steve Bruce has been able to assemble with the side since taking over at Hillsborough.

However, his latest decision may not go down to well with some of the Wednesdaynites at the club.

What’s the News?

Bruce has confirmed that Amadeu Paixao will remain with Sheffield Wednesday in his current role with the club, where he is involved within recruitment.

“Look, he (Paixao) is part of the club. He’s part of the structure of the club – and if he can help us with someone…” he told the club’s official Facebook page.

“But I think he’s aware too that you can’t know every player in the world – no matter how good you are.

“And I think he’ll benefit from it too. We’ll work together with it. He is part of the fabric of the club – there’s no denying that. And if he can help us then great. The more eyes and ears you have the better.”

The Verdict:

The news that Paixao will be remaining in his role at Sheffield Wednesday is unlikely to go down well with the fans at the club – with many believing his poor recruitment has led to the position the club are currently in.

However, with Bruce starting to bring in his own recruitment team (David Downes and Dean Hughes have both arrived from Aston Villa), it would appear that he has the say in making the final choices.

And, with the experienced manager in charge with his own recruitment team that he trusts, he will be able to bring in a number of players he knows and will be able to make the best decisions for the club going forward.

With Financial Fair Play likely to hit Sheffield Wednesday over the summer, it could be a while before any transfer activity takes place at Hillsborough, however, the Wednesdaynites may feel a little more comfortable knowing that Bruce is the one making the shots.

Sadio Mane could be in line for a move away from Anfield as returning Real Madrid boss eyes him amongst the club’s top targets.

Senegal international and Liverpool star man Mane has been in scintillating form recently, scoring five goals in his previous five games, ensuring that his side does not fall any further behind in the title race.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are having torrid time over in Spain. Dumped out of almost every possible competition in the space of a week – including their beloved Champions League – and desperately in need of some inspiration, they have turned to their former boss Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman has a serious task on his hand to instil a sense of pride back in the squad, and with Gareth Bale facing down the barrel of squabbling, spoilt, greedy, hostile Real Madrid fans, there could well be a ‘star player’ vacancy opening up.

The Daily Mail have suggested that Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Sadio Mane and Paul Pogba are all targets this summer, and with Mane being a previous target of Zidane’s there is every chance he could be the one to make the move – especially given the other candidates current position. Indeed, Spanish media outlet El Chiringuito TV also relayed the claims, scaring Kopites even more. we’re sure. 

From Liverpool’s perspective, it would be an incredible ill-informed decision to allow Mane to leave next season.

As an integral part of Liverpool’s start forward line-up, to lose him would certainly disrupt the balance of the squad. And they will need all the chemistry they can get next season if they fail to secure Premier League glory this term.

Mane, on the other hand, may be convinced.

He has been very impressive since arriving at Anfield but has scantly seen his efforts come to fruition, with any form of silverware still evading him.

Crystal Palace make the short trip to Watford this weekend for their FA Cup quarter-final clash. Many Eagles fans surely thought, prior to the former England boss’ Thursday press conference, that Roy Hodgson would continue to prioritise the league instead and thus rest some of his big hitters on Saturday.

The 71-year-old has previously stated that the league remains the priority although he felt it necessary to address the subsequent assumptions made, saying in his presser:

“I see no reason why we can’t do both [play at full capacity in the league and cup].

“Luckily our position in the league – it’s not as good as we’d like – but it’s not precarious at this point in time. There’s no reason why we can’t play on both fronts.

“Even though it’s ridiculously hypothetical, it’s like saying, ‘someone has decided you can have one of these two things: walk away with the trophy and play in the Championship next year or you can miss out on the trophy and still be in the league, what do you want?’

“In that, I say I want the latter, to be in the league. What I really want is to be in the [Premier] League holding the trophy next year.”

Some may believe Hodgson lacks ambition in his team selection most weeks, with the midfield choices particularly uninspiring on occasion, although you can feel reading his comments above that the Premier League’s oldest manager would love to take Palace all the way in the cup if he can.

Not, though, if it means sacrificing top flight status. Luckily for the former Liverpool manager, the two-week break thereafter represents the perfect opportunity to give the cup clash absolutely everything and Palace fans will surely expect nothing less after the abysmal performance at home to Brighton last week.

Last summer was a disaster as far as a midfielder was concerned. First it was Manchester United’s Fred, then Chelsea’s Jorginho, and one by one the rumours were proven untrue or City simply missed out. The fact of the matter is that it’s not good enough to only have one trustworthy, natural defensive midfielder at the club when you’re trying to win all four trophies.

This should have been sorted months ago, but City now find themselves looking at another option reportedly Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele. The Metro have claimed his club has slapped an £80m price tag on him, but the Premier League champions only value him at £60m if the report is to be believed.

Yes, no one likes to see clubs splashing money for the sake of it, but in truth, City just need to pay the cash and stop playing hardball.

The club have a reputation of not caring about transfer fees, but since their first trophy in 2011, that’s been far from the truth. The club had to spend stupid money to attract players from 2008 until the FA Cup win, but now they’re wary of seeming like fools.

Just look at the missed opportunities with Alexis Sanchez and Jorginho.

That’s a good position to be in, where you can afford to stick to your principles and not budge over your own valuation, but the Fernandinho situation needs to be sorted this summer and the club know it.

City should pay whatever it costs to bring Ndombele to the Etihad as he’d be the perfect replacement for the Brazilian. He’s strong, energetic and has great vision to break the press, as well as being able to offer a different dynamic in the final third. He proved that in both Champions League games against Pep Guardiola’s men this season.

City know what he’s capable of and at 22-years-old the initial investment, even if that is £80m, will be worth it ten times over in a decade.

The Sun have claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United are interested in signing Norwich City youngster Ben Godfrey, who is rated at just £10 million.

What’s the word then?

The 21-year-old is being watched closely by the Red Devils’ scouts but is also the interest of other clubs in the Premier League, per the original report.

Godfrey has been a key component for the Canaries this year as they’ve continued their push towards the Sky Bet Championship title, playing every minute since mid-February as the club possess a four-point lead at the top of the table with just eight matches remaining.

The starlet’s recent form under Daniel Farke has helped him break into the England under-20s squad and there is much excitement about him around the football world, with comparisons even being drawn between the 6 ft centre-back and current United defender Chris Smalling according to The Sun.

The price is right and United shouldn’t miss out

The main thing that will make Godfrey such an attractive prospect at Old Trafford is his reported price of £10 million, which would be an absolute bargain in the realm of modern football.

What other hot young English prospect, and at the mature age of 21, can be secured for such a low fee? Man United shouldn’t miss out on this and need to move quickly to make sure they pip rivals to his signature.

Looking at the team’s current first-team centre-back crop, there is a clear lack of youth in the ranks, with the youngest being Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly (24).

This problem can easily be solved by Godfrey, slotting in to provide some freshness in the position and perhaps allowing Solskjaer to get rid of some dead wood if he ends up staying beyond the summer.

The greatest part of a cheap move for the York City academy graduate for the Red Devils, should Norwich accept £10 million, is the low risk, if it doesn’t work out only a small amount has been wasted.

There is, of course, the possibility of it being difficult to prise Godfrey away from Norfolk if his current side get promoted, but if United throw everything behind the move then there aren’t many young players who can afford to turn down a move to “The Theatre of Dreams”.
