Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas is ‘amazed’ that Crystal Palace have offered Christian Benteke a new contract.

Nicholas made the revelation in his Premier League predictions column for this weekend’s round of fixtures, in which he tips the Eagles to come out of their game against Aston Villa at Selhurst Park with a 1-1 draw.

Benteke has reportedly been offered a new deal along with James Tomkins, as the Belgium international has under 12 months remaining on his current terms.

What did he say?

Nicholas said: “I saw them win at Man United, but where did that come from? Jordan Ayew was so composed with the first goal, and they will always be well-drilled under Roy Hodgson.

“I am amazed that Christian Benteke has been offered a new contract.”

Has every right to be amazed

It looked like money well spent when Benteke hit 17 goals in his first season as a Palace player, following a club-record £27m move from Liverpool, although things have turned sour very quickly.

Since that campaign, the former Villa man has scored just four goals in red and blue, all whilst earning a reported salary of £120k-a-week to make him the south Londoners’ third-highest earner behind Wilfried Zaha, who gets £10k more per week, and Max Meyer who earns £125k-a-week.

Given his huge salary and minimal contribution over the last two seasons, Palace should probably just cut their losses on the forward and wave goodbye to him, even more so now that Jordan Ayew looks to have taken his place in the side – the Ghanaian was named ahead of Benteke for the win at Old Trafford.

To be in such dismal form – if you can ever call it form anymore, that is – and be rewarded with a new deal is a ludicrous move from the south London-based side, and Nicholas has every right to be amazed at their baffling decision.

وتابع: “بيراميدز لم يعلن أنه يريد أن يناطح الزمالك والأهلي، نحاول أن نتحسن وأن نحقق الفوز ببطولة كأس الكونفدرالية”.

وأضاف: “لم نفاوض أي لاعب في الزمالك أو الأهلي خلال الفترة الماضية أو الحالية، وخاصة فرجاني ساسي”.

وأتم: “عبد الله السعيد هو قائد بيراميدز، ولم تحدث أي مشكلة بشأن شارة القيادة، بيراميدز يمتلك لاعبين كبار ويعلمون أن القائد ليس بالشارة”.

And now it’s official, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the loan of the goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

The Frenchman arrives to Los Blancos on a one-year loan that will keep him at the club until June 30th 2020. That was also Real Madrid’s last piece of business for the summer transfer window which has now officially closed.

And if the fans’ activity on social media is any indication at all, they weren’t really happy with Areola’s arrival.

They quickly rushed to Twitter to express their disappointment with the signing and clearly expected much more from their club in the summer market.

Below, you can see a collection of tweets showing the fans’ feelings about Areola, with the majority stating their exasperation over what has been perceived as a useless deal that will fail to strengthen the team.

They also argue that Keylor Navas is a far better alternative and that Areola will not really play all that much anyway.

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Monthly Review series, which analyses what managers can learn from the previous month and what the coming month could have in store.

Crystal Palace enjoyed an excellent – if not rare – start to the season in August, performing above expectations to end the first month of the campaign sitting pretty in fourth – if only it would stay that way!

One says rare because the Eagles often take a while to get going. They lost four of their first five Premier League games last term, whilst the season before that, they went without a goal for the first seven games of the campaign, losing all of them.

Despite those previous slow starts, Roy Hodgson has done a fine job so far in 2019/20, recording a historic result at Old Trafford whilst already winning a game at Selhurst Park – Palace won at their own ground just five times in 2018/19.

However, there is always room for improvement. Let’s take a look at two things the former England manager must address in September…

Return of defensive stalwarts 

Things are going pretty well at the back for Palace right now.

At the time of writing, the south Londoners have the best defensive record in the Premier League having conceded just two goals in four games, while keeping two clean sheets.

However, formidable duo Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins are closing in on a return from injury, which leaves Hodgson with a bit of a headache – the pair helped contribute to the sixth-best clean sheet record in the league last term.

Does Hodgson stick with Gary Cahill and Martin Kelly, who have performed admirably so far this term, or does he reinstate Sakho and Tomkins immediately? This is a real dilemma for the 72-year-old, and one he must certainly address.

Decide on his best team

In just four games so far this season, Hodgson has selected three different starting lineups.

He went with Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew up top together in the first match against Everton, then dropped the latter for the next game against Sheffield United, before bringing him back for the trip to Old Trafford whilst also handing Cahill, Jeffrey Schlupp and Cheikhou Kouyate their first starts of the season.

Hodgson stuck with the same XI in the last two outings and impressively gathered six points, so he must now make the decision on whether that lineup – which didn’t include Max Meyer, Benteke or Andros Townsend – is his best.

Tinkering is unlikely to help, after all.

روري سميث، الصحفي بصحيفة “نيو يورك تايمز” الأمريكية، أكد أن ليفربول سيكون سعيدًا بالتخلي عن محمد صلاح أو ساديو ماني في الصيف.

وقال: “أنا متأكد تمامًا، أن ليفربول كان يتوقع بيع ماني أو صلاح في الصيف الماضي، لكن أزمة كورونا جعلت الأمور أصعب، ولم يتمكن أحد من تحمل تكلفة التعاقد معهم”.

وأضاف: “رامي عباس وكيل محمد صلاح بعد خروجه ضد تشيلسي، نشر تغريدة مبهمة، لكنها كانت تشير إلى شيئ ما، ربما كانت القشة الأخيرة”.

وأكمل: “برشلونة لديه ديون كبيرة، كذلك ريال مدريد الذي يحاول بناء ملعب جديد، باريس سان جيرمان يمكنه ضم محمد صلاح، ولكنه ليس على قائمة أهدافهم”.

وأشار: “قبل عام من الآن، ربما كان من السخف التفكير في بيع محمد صلاح أو ساديو ماني، لكن الآن الأمر أصبح منطقية، لا سيما بالنظر إلى أن الثنائي يبتعد عن أفضل حال هذا الموسم”.

محمد صلاح هذا الموسم سجل 17 هدفًا في الدوري الإنجليزي، بينما ساديو ماني 5 أهداف فقط، والأمر لا يبدو أنه كما كان في السابق.

A number of Leeds players were on international duty over the last two weeks as the Championship took a back seat for a small period.

The Whites suffered defeat in their final outing before the break commenced as they lost 1-0 to Swansea.

Creating 21 opportunities, they failed to score and then succumbed to a rather sloppy goal late on.

As a result, Marcelo Bielsa’s men will have to be much-improved if they have desires of jumping from third in the table.

But how could they line-up on Sunday afternoon at Oakwell?

Bielsa hasn’t favoured changes this season and at times he’s even disclosed his team before his side have set foot at the ground.

It was a strange tactic from the Argentine who before a game with Wigan said he wouldn’t name his XI but then did.

Who plays this weekend remains to be seen but we’re tipping the 64-year-old to make just the solitary change against the Reds.

That comes at left wing where a poor performance from Jack Harrison last time out could see Helder Costa earn his first league start after arriving on loan in the summer.

Harrison managed to complete just 76% of his passes whilst he only registered one dribble and was dispossessed four times according to WhoScored.

There should also be a place for Ezgjan Alioski who earned an assist for North Macedonia last week and the 27-year-old has been in good form, not dipping below a match rating of 7 in his last three outings.

Barry Douglas was fit against Swansea but wasn’t preferred from the off and was on the bench.

Eddie Nketiah is likely to have to settle for a place among the substitutes once more as Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas all start.

The former earned a new deal at the beginning of the week whilst Cooper and Dallas also signed new terms.

Rangers’ mini injury crisis on the wings has led to manager Steven Gerrard hinting that there may be a return to first team action for Jamie Murphy earlier than expected, as reported by the club’s official website.

The 30-year-old is only just returning to something resembling full fitness following his unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament knee injury at the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign. He had only just been signed on a permanent deal in the subsequent summer after a successful loan spell.

Murphy was one of few highlights in the tumultuous 2017/18 season, arriving on loan in January and providing 5 goals and 10 assists in just 23 games. The born-and-bred Blue Nose settled immediately, only to be struck down by a season-ending injury on the infamous plastic pitch at Kilmarnock.

Self-inflicted injury to Jordan Jones and a niggling hamstring strain for Ryan Kent has left Gerrard with limited options in the wide areas for the coming weeks. With the games coming thick and fast now, Gerrard accelerating Murphy’s return has been warmly welcomed by Rangers fans.
