عبر مدافع الفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي مانشستر سيتي، ناثان آكي، عن إحباطه الشديد بعد الخسارة أمام ليدز يونايتد بهدف مقابل هدفين في المباراة التي جمعت بينهما في الجولة الحادية والثلاثين من بطولة الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وسقط مانشستر سيتي على ملعبه “الاتحاد” في المباراة التي قادها الحكم، آندي مارينير، وتفوق فيها الأستاذ مارسيلو بيلسا على التلميذ بيب جوارديولا.

وعلق آكي على الهزيمة في تصريحات لشبكة “بي تي سبورت” البريطانية، وقال: “خسارة محبطة، كنا نعلم أن المباراة ستكون صعبة ولكن الطريقة التي تلقينا بها الأهداف لم تكن جيدة، لقد طُرد أحد لاعبيهم وهو ما دفعنا للهجوم ولكننا لم نتمكن من التسجيل سوى متأخرًا”.

وتابع: “بعد المباراة من السهل القول، ربما كانت هناك بعض المساحات في خط الدفاع بسبب محاولاتنا الضغط على ليدز يونايتد لتسجيل الهداف الثاني وهم فريق جيد جدًا في الهجمات المرتدة”.

وأضاف: “الشوط الثاني، كان أداؤنا جيدًا، حاولنا خلق بعض الفرص لكن الأمر كان صعبًا عندما تواجه فريقا يدافع بكل قوة خلف الكرة لكننا تركنا الكثير من المساحات في الدفاع”.

وأتم تصريحاته: “ربما كانت لدينا الكثير من الفرص اليوم، لكن عندما لا تُسجل يصبح الأمر صعبًا عليك كفريق، وبالتالي يجب أن نركز جيدًا في تصحيح أخطاءنا بما أن لدينا مباراة كبيرة يوم، الأربعاء المقبل”.

Out of sight, out of mind.

That’s pretty much been the case for Tendayi Darikwa this season.

Having been a regular in the team last campaign, racking up 31 appearances across all competitions, he has been out of action so far having sustained an injury in pre-season.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, the right-back couldn’t give a timescale on his recovery, but said that things were going well:

“It’s a long-term injury, so it’s slow progress. But I’m happy that I am making progress. The main thing is just to stay focused on the rehab – do everything that the doctors and the physios are telling me to do.

“Hopefully I can then get back at the back end of the season. We haven’t put a timescale on an exact return date just yet, because it’s still so early. But I’m hopeful, with a bit of good luck and a lot of hard work, I might get lucky and play a few games.”

By the sounds of it, he doesn’t sound too confident in being able to make it back this season if he is talking about being lucky to play games.

Given that reports suggest that Carl Jenkinson’s current injury could keep him out for longer than expected, that leaves Forest without a recognised full-back in their ranks.

The question if you are Forest, is do you keep things the way they are and hope that Darikwa will eventually find his way back to full strength sooner rather than later? Or do you put this season down as a write-off and go after someone in January?

It’s something that could certainly be a big dilemma for the club heading into the next couple of months.

Matty Cash has got off to a great start so far this season filling in that role, with one goal, two assists and four clean sheets but you can only play with fire for so long.

They don’t even need to go into the transfer market to search for bodies, with Sabri Lamouchi reportedly happy to give players in the academy a chance this season, that might be the route he is forced to take.

What option he does select will be fascinating to monitor.

At least he’s working on the problem.

Which is more than you can say for Marcelo Bielsa, but that’s for another time.

Despite getting off to a blistering start this season with four goals in the first five league games, things haven’t quite gone quite right for Patrick Bamford recently.

The 26-year-old recently spoke to Yorkshire Evening Post, and judging by his comments, it looks as if he is aware of just how much he’s struggling this term and knows he can do better.

“I know in myself there has been a couple of games this year where I have not been up to par but in the majority, I have been reasonably happy with how I played and I still come away and think yeah you did all right but you have not scored.

“I think if you look at it I am probably more critical than even the fans, so I look at it and I have got four but easily I should probably have 10 goals. I am sure I will get the goals we need. It’s one of them where I will keep working on it after training and stuff and it will come.”

As we have touched on before at FootballFanCast, whilst Bamford hasn’t necessarily been among the goals in recent weeks, it doesn’t mean he isn’t contributing to play, and Leeds’ struggles aren’t just down to him.

What Bamford’s promise and words do show though, is that he desperately needs some help from his teammates.

Whilst he may be critical of himself for not finding the back of the net, it’s also worth pointing out that he only has one assist so far this year, and part of that will come down to the rest of the team not finishing the chances that he creates (one out of five so far this season).

As Experimental361’s graphic shows, Leeds should be cruising through this season but just haven’t managed to find the back of the net as much as they should have.

Wins solve all problems, and if Leeds can just find a way to keep winning, the attention won’t be on Bamford as much and he won’t feel the need to defend himself like this.

This week Leeds United fans have been complaining on Twitter that the football the club have been playing this season isn’t at the standard it was this time last term.

However, Marcelo Bielsa has been quick to refute those complaints as he stated in his press conference that his team have actually improved from 2018/19.

Somebody has to be wrong, so we’re going to explore whether or not Leeds’ start to this term is in fact better than their first 13 games last season.

The first thing to note is that numerically, Leeds are actually in a better place than they were this time last year as they sit one point better off after 13 games.

However, the fans’ complaints weren’t about the results, they were about the manner in which their team are picking up points.

You have to say, Leeds aren’t winning in such a convincing fashion this time around.

United had won five games by two or more goals at this stage of last season including impressive victories against eventual champions Norwich City and playoff finalists Derby County.

This term, the Whites have won just four of their games by at least a two-goal margin, with three of those wins coming against teams battling it out nearer to the bottom of the table in Stoke, Wigan and Barnsley.

The Yorkshire club’s recent woes in front of goal have caused concern as well. Bielsa’s side haven’t scored more than one goal in any of their last six Championship games.

Curiously, Leeds went on a very similar run this time last year as they failed to find a second goal for five games in a row starting with their 2-1 loss to Birmingham.

The reality seems to be that Leeds fans are looking back on their early form last term with rose-tinted glasses.

Supporters are seemingly comparing their current run to their first five or six games of the 2018/19 campaign rather than their first 13.

The side are having slightly bigger problems in terms of finding the net this year, but due to their defensive rigidity, they’ve still been able to grind out results – conceding the fewest goals in the division.

Both parties have a point, but Bielsa is probably right, Leeds are slightly more impressive this year than last.

However, the Elland Road faithful will always look back on those first few matches under the Argentine as the barometer against which all future performances are measured, and that just isn’t a fair reflection of how the club played for the majority of the time last term.

Not quite as routine as last Friday night was it?

Despite taking a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes against Burton Albion, Leicester City were made to huff and puff against the Brewers, only sealing victory in the last minute when a goal from James Maddison wrapped up proceedings.

However it was the man who set up Maddison for his ‘icing on the cake’ goal that seemed to be getting quite a lot of stick from the Foxes faithful, and that was Demarai Gray.

The statistics from last night would certainly back up the fans on this one, as he had a worse pass completion percentage than all bar one of the Leicester centre-backs.

As well as that, he only managed two successful dribbles compared to Marc Albrighton on the opposing flank who managed to achieve eight (all via WhoScored).

And they were not scared in voicing their opinions about the 23-year-old, with some rather harsh comments indeed.

In fairness, he has only started one league game this season, so that should be a decent indicator that he isn’t good enough to be in the first team, that’s why he was playing against Burton last night.

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho is wanted by his former club Manchester City according to new reports from Sport Bild.

What’s the word?

Since leaving Manchester for Germany, Sancho has become one of the most wanted youngsters in world football. The Englishman scored 12 goals in the Bundesliga last season and topped the charts for the most assists in Germany with 14.

As a result of his phenomenal form, Sport Bild states that giant clubs across the continent are keeping tabs on the 19-year-old. These include the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

In order to replace Sancho, Dortmund are believed to be targeting Hertha Berlin’s Javairo Dilrosun, another former City youth player.

Deal would underline City’s problem with youth integration

Pep Guardiola initially waved goodbye to Sancho back in 2017 and has had to watch the youngster blossom into an elite winger ever since. The sale of Sancho was a prime example of City leaving their finest youth products in a situation in which they feel compelled to leave in search of regular first team football.

This emerging trend is in part due to the fact that, with the exception of Foden, no player from City’s youth academy has broken into the side since Sheikh Mansour purchased the club.

Nowadays, the likes of Foden are struggling to get into the side, with the 19-year-old failing to start a Premier League game this season. The likes of Tommy Doyle have only just broken into the side after his midweek debut in the Carabao Cup, while Eric Garcia continues to impress at centre-back when called upon.

But aside from those rare cases, there has been little sign of academy players progressing into the senior squad, and signing Sancho would hardly aid that process either.

The promising winger, Ian Poveda, who has 18 goals for City’s youth teams over the past three seasons, would likely suffer from his arrival and be forced to leave the club, but at what future cost?

Ultimately, though there’s no doubting Sancho would be an exciting addition, a multi-million pound deal to re-sign a player that once resided with City’s youth system and left for a measly £8m would serve to illuminate the club’s long-term problem with youth integration.

And, perhaps most pertinently of all, City only have to assess Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United to appreciate that the Bundesliga star may be one to avoid.
