After his stellar first season in the Premier League, Aston Villa boss Dean Smith would no doubt have been expecting John McGinn to continue his fine form into the new one.

The Scotland international was one of the key reasons behind why Villa ended up surviving relegation back to the Championship, registering six goal contributions in 28 league games and bringing a real energy and dynamism to the side’s midfield.

This season however, has been a completely different story. Whether it’s been a case of burnout (the 26-year-old has played every single minute in the Premier League and has been a Scotland regular too), or just taking his eyes off the prize, McGinn just hasn’t looked like his former self.

He hasn’t scored or assisted since October 4, when he played his part in Villa’s 7-2 triumph over Liverpool, and has produced some truly woeful displays in between. His performance in that 4-3 defeat to Southampton earlier this month was particularly disappointing, with McGinn showing nothing either offensively or defensively.

The £25k-a-week ace is in desperate need of just being taken out of the firing line at the moment, and be given a breather. If Smith continues to try and play him back into form like he’s been doing all season, then a) he risks making things worse, and b) he sends a very worrying message to some of the side’s fringe players who are looking to break into the team.

It’s something former Villa ace Alan Hutton admitted is causing the club problems, saying: “He’s obviously played a lot of football over the course of the season and then to have to play three international games and then come back late during the week to play another Premier League game is difficult.

“The schedule is just unbelievable at the moment and it’s only going to get worse so I do feel for them, it’s gonna get harder but it is what it is, everyone’s kind of in the same boat at the moment.”

Smith has got to make a call sooner rather than later.

وعلق بيدرو على تأهل منتخب مصر عبر شاشة “أون تايم سبورتس”: “أهنئ منتخب مصر، يستحقون التأهل للمرحلة التالية، هم الأفضل في المجموعة، والمرشحون منذ البداية وتألهم منطقي، وهو العدل”.

ووجه رسالة إلى الجماهير الأنجولية: “لدينا جيل رائع من الممكن أن يكون له مستقبل مميز، على الشعب الأنجولي الوثوق بهم وعلى اللاعبين أن يثقوا في أنفسهم وأنهم لاعبون محترفون على أعلى مستوى”.

وأوضح: “هدفي تكوين جيل جديد للمنتخب الأنجولي من أجل المنافسة بقوة على التأهل إلى كأس العام 2026 بجانب التواجد بقوة في كأس الأمم الإفريقية القادمة”.

وأكد: “الآن علينا أن نحتفل، حققنا تعادلًا هامًا مع أفضل فريق في إفريقيا، الجميع شاهد جيل جديد لأنجولا يناطح هذا المنتخب القوي، علينا أن نحتفل بذلك”.

وعن حظوظ منتخب مصر في الوصول إلى كأس العالم، يرى بيدرو: “ربما شيء غير عادل أن يتأهل من إفريقيا 5 منتخبات فقط، لأن القارة بها منتخبات جيدة ويُمكنها تحقيق الكثير في كأس العالم، مهمة الجميع ستكون صعبة والحظوظ متساوية”.

وواصل: “بدأنا بشكل جيد وسيطرنا على الكرة وطبقنا أفكارنا، ولكن نحن نعلم أن الفريق المصري عندما تُسجل في شباكه هدفين، ستكون هناك رد فعل وهذا ما حدث”.

واختتم: “طالبت اللاعبين بالتماسك بعد التقدم بهدفين، لكن ضغط منتخب مصر كان فوق قدراتنا ونجحوا في العودة لكننا استمرينا كند قوي لهم بعد ذلك”.

يُذكر أن منتخب أنجولا كان قد تقدم على مصر بهدفين قبل أن يعود منتخب مصر في النتيجة بتعادل ثمين يضمن له التأهل إلى الدور الأخير من التصفيات.

Despair under Pochettino

The 26-year-old looked certain to be heading for a career crossroad under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino – no one knew whether he was best suited as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back, which often meant others were selected over him.

Before the Argentine was sacked, Dier had played just two full 90-minute matches from 12 outings in the early days of the 2019/20 season.

Speaking to The Athletic about his potential position change, Dier said:

“I went to see him, it was more about my position and where I was playing. We had spoken for many years about me gradually making that transition back to centre-back. For the last three years we’d had many conversations on it. And it was me saying to him: for me, it was now. And if it wasn’t for him, we’d have to find another solution.”

Well, Dier was used just once as a centre-back by Pochettino after that conversation. Clearly, the ex-Spurs chief never truly fancied him in the role as in the previous two seasons, the 6 foot 2 powerhouse made just four appearances as a central defender.

Revival under Mourinho

Now you only have to look at him under Mourinho to see the incredible shift in talent. He has started all but one of the Premier League matches at centre-back with Spurs currently ranking as the top-flight’s best defence having only leaked nine goals.

In the summer, Dier signed a new contract, citing the ‘Special One’ as the major factor and it’s hardly a surprise – you can see the £85k-per-week star really enjoying his football these days.

“For me, that was the biggest part of wanting to stay at Tottenham and sign the new deal – it was purely footballing. I was really happy that Mourinho would give me the opportunity to play centre-back again and to prove myself there. I’m really excited,” Dier told GQ magazine.

In the Premier League, Dier is averaging 5.7 clearances (third-best in the division), 2.9 aerial duels won, over 60 passes at an accuracy of 84.4% per game, via WhoScored.

No other top-flight player has managed more headed clearances (37) either.

It’s no wonder pundits have been quick to praise his form this season.

Ex-Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas dubbed Dier “sensational” after defeating City whilst Gary Neville told Sky Sports (via football.london) at the weekend: “He’s got pace, he’s a good leader, a good character, he’s good on the ball and he’s defending really well.”

The €30m-rated (£27m) centre-back rightly deserves just as much praise as Messrs Kane and Son, even more so if they pull off the unthinkable, after all… defence wins you championships.

وحسب صحيفة “فوت ماك” التركية، فإن نادي أتالانتا الإيطالي يريد التعاقد مع مصطفى محمد هذا الشتاء.

وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن النادي الإيطالي، سوف يرسل كشافين إلى إسطنبول من أجل مشاهدة مباراتي فناربخشة ومارسيليا لمتابعة مصطفى محمد.

وأوضحت الصحيفة أن اهتمام أتالانتا بالتعاقد مع مصطفى محمد، يأتي في ظل رغبة النادي في إمكانية بيع مهاجمه الكولومبي لويس موريل مقابل 30 مليون يورو.

وقالت الصحيفة إن جالطة سراي، يريد الحصول على مبلغ مالي قدره 10 ملايين يورو للموافقة على بيع مصطفى محمد.

يُذكر، أن مصطفى محمد شارك في 20 مباراة بمُختلف المسابقات مع جالطة سراي هذا الموسم، ولم يتمكن من إحراز إلا أربعة أهداف وصنع هدفًا واحدًا.

This has been an absolutely exhilarating year for Leeds United.

After gaining promotion to the Premier League for their first top-flight season in 16 years, they went and broke their transfer record.

They shelled out £30m on Rodrigo, a Spanish attacker who is now firmly hitting the ground running at Elland Road.

The start to the campaign rather summed things up, losing 4-3 and then tasting victory by the same scoreline.

However, their year could yet end with a bang if reports from the Daily Mail are to be believed.

According to the newspaper, Andrea Radrizzani is on the verge of selling another 15% of his stake to the San Francisco 49ers, bringing even more investment to Yorkshire.

It would increase the 49ers stake in the club and could see Leeds valued at around the £240m mark. Further money being ploughed into the football club is certainly no bad thing, especially ahead of a transfer window.

Although Marcelo Bielsa thinks the club are unlikely to buy anyone in January more money at Leeds could finally allow them to sign one of their long-term targets.

In the summer Leeds struggled to sign Rodrigo de Paul with his asking price at Udinese deemed too high by United’s officials.

However, as we know, there is still interest in the player according to Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross.

As a result, Victor Orta could well get his cheque book out and explore a deal for the Argentine once again. After all, the Spanish director of football is someone who is used to biding his time before making his move – you only need to look at the way they’d tracked Raphinha since his days in Portugal to realise that.

De Paul would be a superb signing too. Deemed a “powerful shooter”, he has scored three times this season and found the net on seven occasions last term – two fewer than Pablo Hernandez but at a higher level in Serie A.

Speaking after his failed move to Leeds last summer, the midfielder’s former manager Julio Velazquez noted: “He lacks absolutely nothing, he could play in any club in the world.”

If Leeds do indeed end up with enough money to bring him to England, they must secure a move.

It would be an outstanding start to the new relationship between Radrizzani and the 49ers.

كشف الجهاز الطبي للزمالك حجم إصابة أحمد سيد زيزو لاعب الفريق، التي تعرض لها في مباراة البنك الأهلي أمس الإثنين.

الزمالك تعادل مع البنك الأهلي بهدف لكل فريق، في المباراة التي أقيمت ضمن منافسات الجولة الخامسة من عمر بطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز.

Peltier lost the ball 26 times, more than any other Baggies player, and despite being heavily involved with 88 touches, failed to provide an accurate cross and made only two of 13 long balls, via SofaScore.

The former Cardiff ace could only make 66% of his 58 passing attempts too, which is hugely wasteful and rather shocking.

BirminghamLive’s Joseph Chapman graded him a 5/10, and said: “[He was] caught out of position as Blackpool attacked Albion down their right before the break and took the lead.”

Big Sam is surely going to think twice about starting the lightweight defender again in the future after that absolute betrayal of a performance.
