Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe, who was on loan from Bournemouth at the time, signed a pre-contract agreement to join Rangers on a permanent basis in the summer this time last year as Steven Gerrard sought to bolster his firepower.

And now, despite Gerrard’s initial protestations, Rangers seem set for a busy end to the January transfer window, with Scott Wright, Jack Simpson and Nnamdi Oforborh mentioned in the running to move to Ibrox before deadline day shuts its doors later tonight.

Gerrard and his chief accomplice Ross Wilson have overseen a dramatic restructuring and changing of the guard with Jamie Murphy and Jordan Rossiter among the names to leave the club last year.

Last summer, Rangers added Leon Balogun to their ranks, which took their central defensive options to five: Balogun, George Edmundson, Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Nikola Katic.

However, with Katic missing the majority of the season through injury and Edmundson now destined for the Ibrox exit, this leaves Gerrard with only three centre-back options for two spots in his preferred 4-3-3 system.

Barring a coronavirus outbreak, an injury crisis could quickly cause problems, however, so perhaps an experienced replacement is needed.

They had reportedly set their sights on Preston North End’s Ben Davies but it seems they have failed to sign him as he is set to sign for Gerrard’s former club and Premier League giants Liverpool.

For context, that would place him higher than the likes of regular starters Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield in the Rangers squad with 6.79 and 6.78 respectively.

He is prepared to put the hard graft in to deny opponents, as evidenced by the fact that he currently averages 1.2 tackles and 4.3 clearances per game in the Championship, which is more than the likes of both Balogun and Helander.

It’s hardly surprising Davies has been described as an “excellent” colossus by his current boss Neil, who has made no secret of his admiration for the defender.

The centre-back currently has six months left on his Preston contract, which means he is free to speak to clubs about a potential transfer.

It’s no wonder, then, that other clubs have begun to take notice, with Premiership rivals Celtic also previously credited with an interest in his signature.

A player of his calibre could have been an enormous help as the Gers enter the crunch stage of the competition 23-points clear of their arch-rivals.

Unfortunately for Gerrard, it looks like he may have missed the chance to sign the defender as he is due to have a medical on Monday ahead of a move to Anfield.

Glasgow Rangers star man Glen Kamara could leave the Scottish giants in the near future in a bid to make a move south of the border, according to one pundit.

The 25-year-old midfielder has been in imperious form for Steven Gerrard’s side so far this season and was linked to Premier League sides Everton and Newcastle last year.

What’s the word?

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has delivered his verdict and claims a transfer could be on the cards.

“I think they might,” McAvennie told Football Insider when asked if Rangers might struggle to keep hold of Kamara in the summer.

“No disrespect to Celtic and Rangers but if you go to the Premier League you’re made for life. You’re set for life money-wise. You’re secure and if he goes down there and signs a four-year deal then he’s set.

“Unfortunately, as Steven Gerrard has found out, if you start winning games then teams start looking at your players. That’s a good thing. It means that they’re doing the right things and I’m sure Stevie will see it that way as well.

“I don’t think he’ll stand in the boy’s way if he’s got a big offer and everyone’s for sale. But he’ll not let him go if it’s not right for Rangers. He’ll not be going anywhere unless there’s a good offer on the table that satisfies Kamara and satisfies Rangers.”

Stand firm

Originally signed from Dundee in 2019, the in-form Finnish central midfielder – who earns £6,200-per-week at Ibrox – has established himself as one of the top players in the Scottish Premiership, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 90 appearances across all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

While Kamara is one of five central midfield options currently available to Gerrard at the moment, it’s telling that he has made more appearances than any of his closest rivals, which once again highlights his importance to the league leaders.

It is evident, therefore, that he has become an integral part of Gerrard’s Gers that have stormed to the summit of the Premiership and after such an impressive run of form, Wilson shouldn’t think twice about offering him a new contract to convince him to stay at the club.

Gerrard is clearly a big fan of Kamara, too, as he made it clear he wants him to sign a new deal. He said: “‘I don’t know’ is the answer to your question. If it was my decision, the answer would be yes.

“I’ve made my feelings known to Ross (Wilson, sporting director) and the board on that situation.

“Glen has been fantastic for me since day one. He’s grown and he’s evolved. He’s improved and he’s listened.”

Wilson and the rest of the Ibrox hierarchy now must work hard to ensure that Kamara is rewarded for his services with a lucrative new contract, otherwise they may risk losing him in the summer when foreign clubs will be on the lookout to strengthen their squads before the start of next season.

While Leeds United may have gotten back to winning ways against Southampton last time out, Marcelo Bielsa must consider unleashing Helder Costa when Aston Villa make the trip to Elland Road on late Saturday afternoon.

The Whites ran out 3-0 winners over the Saints in the Premier League, but the scores were locked level at 0-0 before a second-half salvo knocked the wind out of the home side’s sails.

And one man who was instrumental in changing the complexion of that game, was Costa.

The £10.8m-rated star has been on the periphery of things in the Premier League this season, after initially starting the first eight games of the campaign. Since then, both Jack Harrison and Raphinha have nailed down the starting wide positions, with the 27-year-old Costa left looking in from the outside.

But after coming on at the break for Harrison against Arsenal, the exciting winger has shown flashes of being back to his best. He delivered an emphatic finish at the Emirates to pull one back against the Gunners as Leeds tried to mount a second-half fight-back, while he was equally impressive against the Saints, this time picking up an assist after again coming on for the same player.

Against Southampton, he attempted more dribbles, provided more key passes and won more duels than Harrison, while his quick feet and trickery also saw him earn four free-kicks for his side – the joint-most of any player on the day.

Speaking earlier this season, his former manager at Wolves, Nuno Espirito Santo, waxed lyrical about his fellow Portuguese man, saying: “When we arrived in the Championship, Helder was injured. They were major injuries and it took a lot of time for him to recover. So that season was not the best for him, but in the first season we were in the Premier League, Helder was immense and had a huge impact on the team.

“He’s a very talented player, but things happen naturally, players move from here to another place. It happens in football. Honestly, I’m delighted he’s showing his quality and enjoying his football.”

With his long-term future up in the air, Costa doesn’t appear too much time to really stamp his mark on Leeds and prove to Bielsa that he deserves to remain at Elland Road.

But given his recent performances from off the bench, he’s absolutely deserving of a rare start when Aston Villa come to town on Saturday afternoon. He could well be the Leeds boss’ game-changer if given the opportunity.
