Wellington win a slow affair

Wellington and Auckland put in a performance for most of this fourth-round Shell Cup match that can give one-day cricket a bad name – and then found something in the last 10 overs to return some semblance of respectability to the match

Chris Rosie27-Dec-2000Wellington and Auckland put in a performance for most of this fourth-round Shell Cup match that can give one-day cricket a bad name – and then found something in the last 10 overs to return some semblance of respectability to the match. The records will show that Wellington scored 218 for eight off their 50 overs and Auckland were bowled out off the last ball of their 50 for 213, Wellington recording their first win in four matches by five runs. The match started promisingly enough after Wellington got over their worries about being put in first on a green pitch and losing Chris Nevin in the second over. They went along comfortably enough at a little over fours courtesy of Matthew Bell, Auckland transplant Richard Jones and a regular supply of four balls from the bowlers.Bell contributed 61 and Jones 42 as they put on 81 for the second wicket. But that was the end of the substatntial partnerships as only Jason Wells with an unbeaten 50 contributed anything more of substance. The innings meandered along as the Auckland bowling, particularly that of Kyle Mills (10-2-37-1) and Mark Haslam (10-0-37-2), did not provide any leeway to batsmen who did not seem interested in looking for it.In the end 218 was not much to show for some early endeavour. But if Wellington did not look interested in going for runs, nor did Auckland. John Aiken held up one end but his prospective partners came and went with monotonous regularity and with little to show for their presence. Monotonous became the operative word as Wellington dawdled through their overs, producing little more than 12 an hour, the Auckland innings taking just a couple of minutes short of four hours. And when Aiken departed for 56 with the score at 128 for five in the 37th over, it looked all over for Auckland. However, Andre Adams and first Tama Canning and then Richard Morgan broke the shackles that had taken hold of the match.Canning provided a quick-fire 18 off 20 balls and then Adams (47 off 33 balls) and Morgan (10 off 15) conbined for a 57-run eighth wicket partnership that put a most unlikely victory in reach. However, they had been asked to do too much in too little time.Auckland’s final pair, Mills and Haslam, who had done so well with the ball, were asked to get 10 off the last over. No fairy-tale ending here.Of the Wellington bowlers, Stephen Mather and Carl Bulfin had a couple of horror overs at the end when Adams in a particular was in full flight but otherwise maintained control. However, Andrew Penn took the honours, his nine overs going for just 27 as he claimed four wickets. However, the Auckland batting did make the bowlers look good. It is a match from which Wellington took the two points but neither team should take much satisfaction.

Park delighted by Gers share response

Rangers chairman Douglas Park admits he has been overwhelmed by the response to their latest share offering, which was made available to supporters.

The Lowdown: Gers fans can buy shares

On 1st June, it was revealed supporters would be able to buy shares.

Individual fans were given the opportunity to buy shares worth a minimum £500 and a maximum £100,000. Those who do not have the funds to do so can, via Gers fan group Follow Follow, purchase shares worth as little as £10. All in all, the 55-time Scottish champions hope to raise £6.75m (via Rangers News).

The Latest: Park shares delight

Speaking to Rangers’ official website, Park has revealed his delight at the response to the initiative. He said:

“We have been overwhelmed by the response.

“We knew that there were a significant amount of people wanting to own shares in Rangers, but still we’ve been astonished by the number of people signing up. It is a testament to the commitment and loyalty of our amazing fans.”

The Verdict: Gers fans show love for the club

This is the latest step to give the Gers supporters a bigger voice at the club. Last December, major shareholder Dave King revealed he had struck a long-term deal with supporters group Club 1872 to buy his 20.37% stake in the club as he stepped down from his role as chairman (The Daily Record).

The Gers supporters are being given the chance to take back a large portion of their club – something which we do not see too often in football.

The failed European Super League revealed the extent of the greed that certain clubs in Europe have, but the Gers’ desire to be involved with their fans and city shows Ibrox is in honest and capable hands.

In other news, Rangers have been urged to move for this impressive 24-year-old.

Time’s up for Yarmolenko at West Ham

West Ham United winger Andriy Yarmolenko could be on the move this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Turkish newspaper Fotomac (via Sport Witness), Super Lig giants Galatasaray are looking at signing the Ukraine international this transfer window.

It’s thought that the 22-time league winners will be aggressive in the market, having been pipped to the title this season by arch-rivals Besiktas, once they appoint their next president.

The Irons are said to be keen on selling the 31-year-old as he enters the final year of his £115k-per-week contract at the London Stadium, though it remains to be seen how much the Hammers could command in terms of a transfer fee.

Show no mercy

Yarmolenko was one of Mario Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini’s many transfer disasters in East London, so as the club embarks on an exciting new era with Europa League football on the horizon, it would be a fitting way to move on from that troubled past by moving the veteran on.

The versatile 6 foot 2 attacker has been troubled by a mix of inconsistencies on the pitch and injuries. For example, this season under David Moyes, Yarmolenko has been restricted to one league start and a total of just 362 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

Since arriving in a £22m deal from Dortmund in 2018, he has missed a total of 57 matches through injury alone, ranging from Achilles ruptures to back and abductor damage.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

All in all, it’s fair to suggest that he’s not justified his price tag or wages, which makes him one of Pellegrini’s worst mistakes.

It’s unlikely that the club can recoup much of what they’ve wasted on Yarmolenko but they should absolutely snatch what they can get from Galatasaray.

When factoring in fees and wages, the Ukraine winger has cost GSB around £39.5m – and counting – since he’s been at the club. In fact, it’s nearly three years to the day he signed.

It means Yarmolenko has cost £745k per appearance (53 in total) and £3.95m per goal (ten in total).

Despite being dubbed “really special” by teammate Declan Rice, it’s time for Moyes to show no mercy and get the 32-year-old off the books this summer.

He’s held the Hammers back for years and that money could be better off spent on improving the squad, rather than it being wasted on him. He must be axed following any approach for his signature.

Border take giant stride in bid to reach final

If Border claim a place in the final of the Supersport Series, then Friday in Bloemfontein might just be the day they gave themselves the chance

Marcus Prior – MWP02-Mar-2001If Border claim a place in the final of the Supersport Series, then Friday in Bloemfontein might just be the day they gave themselves the chance.By stumps they had moved into a sizeable 162-run lead with eight secondinnings wickets in hand, after bowling their opponents Free State out forjust 225.The Free State total was dominated by the efforts of Andrew Gait, theopener’s 112 his highest score in first-class cricket and just his secondhundred. It could have ended so much earlier though, as the young batsmanappeared to be the recipient of a healthy dose of good fortune when on just24.It was then that he aimed a pull shot at Tyron Henderson and he – andjust about everyone else – turned to see the ball climbing high into thesky. It was only when the ball landed safely that ‘keeper Ian Mitchellindicated that the wicket had been broken. Surely Gait had to go, hitwicket? But doubt there was, and instead of Gait lengthening his stride back tothe pavilion, he took up guard once more with the blessing of the umpires.Quite what Border made of it all was less clear. Certainly in the days oftelevision replays, Gait might not have been so lucky. What would have improved the Border spirits was the clatter of FreeState wickets, eight of them for just 13 runs, as the home side stumbledfrom 109-2 to 122-6 shortly after lunch. Despite the efforts of Gait andRashied Lewis, 225 still represented a serious deficit. That much was rammed home by some fine batting from Craig Sugden as hehelped the Bears into what should be an impregnable position by the close.

Ex-PL star piles pressure on key Arsenal man - exclusive

Former Premier League star Dean Windass believes Mikel Arteta faces a season filled with questions after a poor campaign at Arsenal.

The Gunners boss guided the club to an eighth-placed finish, meaning they will spend next season with no European football.

In total, Arsenal took 61 points from their 38 games and ended the campaign six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

While they did win all of their final five games in the league, Arteta’s side ultimately paid the price for a poor start, as they won just four of their opening 14 matches, losing eight.

Arsenal also failed in cup competitions, being knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton in the fourth round, and by Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. Villarreal, managed by former boss Unai Emery, knocked Arsenal out in the semi-finals of the Europa League en route to winning the competition, beating Manchester United on penalties in the final.

Windass believes that the Spaniard will subsequently be under severe pressure next season as he looks to right the ship and guide the Gunners back into Europe.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, the former Hull City ace said: “Arsenal have underachieved, so the manager is going to be massively under pressure next year for Arsenal and you don’t know what you’re going to get with Arsenal.

“Next year there’ll be a massive question on everybody’s lips, is he good enough to take Arsenal to the next level? Only time will tell.”
