Leeds’ signing of Firpo looks imminent

Leeds United look set to announce the signing of Junior Firpo from Barcelona in the coming days, which will be a huge boost for Marcelo Bielsa ahead of next season.

According to Adam Crafton of The Athletic, Firpo has arrived in England to complete his £12.8m move from the La Liga giants, with a deal likely to be announced this week after he completes a medical.

Bielsa’s side have seen off interest from AC Milan and Southampton in order to sign the former Real Betis man, who was never really able to impose himself at the Nou Camp, playing second fiddle to Jordi Alba for the majority of his time at the Catalan club.

In total, he would make just 41 appearances for Barcelona in his two seasons at the club, contributing two goals and three assists in that time.

However, he was highly regarded during his time at Real Betis and at just 24-years-old, still has plenty of time to realise his potential with Leeds United.

When he first signed for Barcelona, former Betis and Barcelona manager Quique Setien sang his praises, saying:

“Barca have made a good deal. It’s a boy with enormous potential, youth, desire, excitement and quality. He’s worth the gamble.

“He will make progress at Barca because he has the desire and potential for growth. He has things to improve, of course.

“Barca have made an excellent deal. He has some qualities to polish, and good things that will come in handy.”

Whilst things didn’t work out for him at the Nou Camp, these quotes certainly bode well for his future at Elland Road, and Leeds fans will surely be excited to see him join.

Considering Ezgjan Alioski featured at left-back for much of last season but has now left the club after his contract expired, an upgrade was required at left-back, and Leeds have acted very quickly to bring in a player of Firpo’s quality, which will delight Bielsa and the Elland Road faithful.

Left-back could have been a problem area going into next season, but Leeds have acted quickly to address it and that will be music to the ears of their veteran manager.

India in trouble after Windies pacemen strike

The second day did not go well for India

Anand Vasu19-May-2002The second day did not go well for India. After allowing the West Indies to reach 422, India lost four first innings wickets, including that of Tendulkar, for 86, before staging a minor recovery to end the day on 141/4.India’s problems became much more pronounced by lunch on the second day. Despite the unusual dismissal of Carl Hooper, West Indies managed to propel themselves towards a more-than healthy first-innings score. The day began with West Indies trotting along comfortably, untroubled by anything the bowling could serve up. The loss of three wickets late on Saturday had done nothing to dampen the home team’s spirits. And, yes, even the wicket of Hooper on Sunday morning failed to demoralise them. When Javagal Srinath let slip a short ball and Hooper let it go, after dabbing at it, the most embarrassing thing happened. At least for the skipper of the West Indies. The ball took the edge of the bat and bobbed straight up in the air for Rahul Dravid at slip to back-peddle and catch. Hooper added three to his overnight score to be dismissed for 17.Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ridley Jacobs, however, had no problems with the bowling. He is becoming a big problem for the Indians, Chanderpaul is. No matter what they bowl at him, on any wicket, the man the Windies calls Chanders just goes on and on and on.The runs were not coming in cracking fashion for the hosts. Yet, to have reached 381/5 at lunch on the second day, after being put in to bat, was not a bad place to be.The second session of the second day was the kind neither team benefited overly from.It all began with Ridley Jacobs being bowled when he looked set for a big score. In good nick and going for his shots, Jacobs (59 runs, 90 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes) went for a cut shot that just wasn’t there. Harbhajan Singh exulted as the resultant edge went back onto the stumps.Merv Dillon, trying to give Chanderpaul company, lasted just two balls for his duck as he was trapped plumb in front by Harbhajan Singh. The offie was delighted; after all, he as a spinner might not have hoped to get so many wickets on a green-top.Chanderpaul, nudging, nurdling and knocking the ball away to all parts for valuable runs, fell when he was looking good. He’s simply not the batsman you want at the crease when you’re trying to force the pace. With wickets falling around him, Chanderpaul attempted one stroke too many, edging a climbing delivery from Srinath to the ‘keeper when he was on 58 (148 balls, 7 fours). A disappointment yes, but only relatively. The tail then packed up in predictable fashion and West Indies were all out for 422. Harbhajan Singh had a 5-for, albeit an expensive one – 5/138.In response, India struggled. Wasim Jaffer, who played so beautifully in the previous match, was out before he could trouble the scorers, nicking Merv Dillon through to Ridley Jacobs. And then the man who has been India’s source of strength all tour, Rahul Dravid, was trapped plumb in front. Playing down the wrong line to a ball that would have shattered middle stump, Dravid (5) could only look helplessly as the dreaded finger went up.Sachin Tendulkar, like Brian Lara, was nervous starting off. The pressure on the little master from Mumbai was immense after he registered scores of 0, 0, 8, 0 in the last four innings of the series.Yet, there was a certain stubbornness to the pair of Das and Tendulkar doing business. Both were not at their best, both were searching for a few runs. The pair somehow kept the bowling at bay. And before you knew it, Tendulkar looked to be regaining his form. The loose balls were dispatched with increased regularity, the sticky deliveries were left well alone… Until, Adam Sanford had the last laugh.Reaching for a delivery well outside the off-stump, without quite moving his feet, Tendulkar (41 runs, 63 balls, 7 fours) dragged the ball back onto his stumps. There was a visible fall in the morale of the Indian dressing room. Shoulders drooped, players looked beaten. And then Das was dismissed. Playing across the line to a full delivery from Cameron Cuffy that would have clipped the middle and leg stump, Das saw to his dismay that the appeal for lbw was upheld. Das (33) was back in the pavilion and India were in trouble at 86/4.Then came a partnership that helped India stage a comeback. VVS Laxman, batting with the confidence and abandon of a man who has already scored 386 runs in the Test series, drove his way to 27 not out. Ganguly, on 22, was not far behind. India managed 141/4, but that still leaves them with a lot to do if they are to avoid losing the series.

Setback for India as Kent triumph

Kent’s James Golding played a key role in his side’s 21-run victory over India at Canterbury

CricInfo Staff24-Jun-2002Kent’s James Golding played a key role in his side’s 21-run victory over India at Canterbury. Golding, a 6ft 4ins seamer, took four for 42 as India were stopped in their tracks as they pursued 286 for victory. Mark Ealham also performed admirably, taking four for seven in 11 balls to polish off the tourists’ innings after an unbeaten 74.Initially India appeared well set to reach the target, although opener Virender Sehwag’s aggressive innings of 45 ended when he lofted Golding to Martin Saggers at mid-off. Sourav Ganguly made 64 before misjudging a single to mid-wicket.That brought Sachin Tendulkar to the wicket to join Dinesh Mongia, with whom he added 30 inside five overs. But after whipping a delivery on middle stump from Andrew Symonds to the cover boundary, Tendulkar played a short ball from Golding into his stumps.Mongia top-edged to be caught by wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, and Yuvraj Singh hit straight to David Fulton at midwicket. Ealham then benefited from some desperate hitting, as first Rahul Dravid and then the Indian tail were swept away.Earlier a second-wicket partnership of 128 in just 19 overs by Robert Key and Andrew Symonds had given Kent hopes of exceeding 300. After losing his opening partner James Hockley, caught behind by Dravid off Tinu Yohannan in the third over, Key looked in excellent form, pulling a no-ball from the tourists’ captain Sourav Ganguly for six in the final over of fielding restrictions.Key eventually fell to Harbhajan Singh for 76, stumped by Dravid as he went to hit over the top. His dismissal triggered a collapse from 138 for one to 183 for five. Symonds then departed for 75, after calling for a non-existent run to midwicket. He was sent back by Matthew Walker and defeated by Yuvraj Singh’s throw. As Harbhajan and Anil Kumble turned the screw, just 103 runs came between the 20th and 46th overs. It took a late charge from Ealham to regain Kent’s momentum. Ealham hit three sixes in the penultimate over of the innings from Yohannan, which cost 28 runs. Ealham finished unbeaten on 74, from as many deliveries, having hit five sixes and five fours.

Will this be Celtic’s new Edouard?

“Good Odsonne, good Odsonne!” screamed new Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou during his open mic training session last week.

The Australian must have been chomping at the bit to work with such a prolific finisher but it remains to be seen whether Edouard will actually stay at Parkhead for too much longer.

Celtic’s star man has been linked with the exit door for over a year now and a move very nearly went through last month.

Edouard had been touted with Leicester City but a deal fell through after they signed a different target instead.

It’s surprising to see the Frenchman back in Celtic colours again but it wouldn’t be a great shock if he departs before the transfer window is done and dusted.

If the striker does leave then the Hoops will have a massive void to fill.

The 23-year-old has been their top scorer for a number of years now and without his goals last term, they’d have fallen even further behind Rangers in the Premiership.

If the France youth international does seal an exit they should look no further than Clermont Foot attacker Mohamed Bayo.

The Hoops have only just waved farewell to another Bayo in Vakoun Issouf but the 23-year-old has the potential to be a wonderful signing.

The Daily Record suggested him as a potential signing last weekend, adding fuel to the fire of various debates to emerge on social media.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Celtic analytics accounts have profiled Bayo on several occasions, encouraging a move to be made.

Bhoys Analytics shared a video of his play and raised the question of whether he should be Edouard’s replacement back in March. Everything Celtic have also urged the club to move on two occasions now, tweeting the following in May:

“Standing at 6ft 2 Bayo offers an aerial threat Celtic have been missing. He’s a powerful, pacey striker & sharpshooter in front of goal.”

You only need to look at the striker’s record for Clermont Foot last season to understand why he’s such a topic of debate. He scored 22 goals in all competitions, proving to be a dynamic threat in front of goal.

Celtic have had plenty of triumphs when recruiting from France down the years with Edouard, Moussa Dembele and Christopher Jullien just a few success stories.

The Glaswegian side should look to utilise their strong connections across the channel again this summer in a bid to give them an extra dose of firepower.

Albian Ajeti has looked impressive in pre-season and could be given greater freedom to perform by Postecoglou next season but if Edouard departs, they will need an out and out goal-scorer.

Supporters might be worried that Bayo would arrive from the second-tier of French football but look no further than N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez to understand that their lower leagues are a breeding ground for some of the best talent around.

AND in other news, Ange can finally axe Christie at Celtic by unleashing “first-class” rarely-seen 19 y/o…
