Spurs have a concrete interest in Vlahovic

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in a move to bring Dusan Vlahovic to north London this summer is “concrete.”

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa, who revealed in a recent interview with Radio Bruno (via Viola News) that Tottenham’s interest in the Fiorentina centre-forward is very much genuine.

The journalist went on to claim that making an offer matching the €60m (£51m) asking price of the 21-year-old would not be a problem for Spurs should they go on to sanction the €120m (£103m) sale of Harry Kane this summer amid interest from Manchester City.

Finally, Laudisa claimed that the Serbia international has no intention of signing a new deal at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, with the striker still having two years left to run on his current contract with La Viola.

He said: “It’s understandable that Tottenham, with Kane in the sights of Manchester City, look around: Fiorentina have said no for now, but the €60m value can be dangerous.

“I don’t like to venture into predictions, I limit myself to facts, and the facts say that Tottenham’s interest is concrete.

“If the English club were to collect more than €120m for Kane, they would have no problem offering €60m for Vlahovic. His contract? For months, I have received a very specific signal that cannot be ignored: for now, there is no intention of renewing.”

Vlahovic could be Kane’s heir

Considering the remarkable goalscoring form Vlahovic found for Fiorentina last season, it is an easy argument to make that the 21-year-old could well be Harry Kane’s heir apparent if the England captain takes leave of the club.

Indeed, over his 37 Serie A appearances for Vincenzo Italiano’s side last season, the £36m-rated man scored a whopping 21 goals, registered three assists and created three big chances for his teammates, along with taking 2.3 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man who Forza Italian Football editor-in-chief Conor Clancy dubbed a “complete number nine” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as Fiorentina’s joint second-best performer in Serie A.

While it is true these returns do not quite match up to Kane’s 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League last season, the fact that the Vlahovic is six years Kane’s junior would seem to indicate that the youngster still has plenty of scope for further improvement.

Despite his tender age – with Clancy going on to claim that the 21-year-old is “strong, can link play up [and] can hold the ball up,” as well as stating that he expects the Serbian to “score every time he plays” – these would all appear to be traits shared with the Tottenham talisman.

As such, should Kane indeed move onto pastures new this summer, it would seem as if Spurs could do a lot worse than signing Vlahovic as the 27-year-old’s replacement.

Ali and Panesar primed to step up to England Academy

It is a sign of the times that of the twenty names put forward as aprovisional list for the ECB National Academy to go to Australia at the endof the current season, two of them are from the British Asian community

Ralph Dellor21-Jul-2002It is a sign of the times that of the twenty names put forward as aprovisional list for the ECB National Academy to go to Australia at the endof the current season, two of them are from the British Asian community. Itwas not so very long ago that Asians did not feature on county staffs. Nowthere are only two or three that do not have representatives from withinthat community.Looking further afield, it is not only in England that Asians are playing aprominent role in cricket development. In the emerging nations of theEuropean Cricket Council, the game is being nurtured throughout theassociate and affiliate members of ICC by Asians. They are at the heart ofdevelopment programmes right across Europe and now the process has gone fullcircle in that Kent have recruited Amjad Khan, a fast-medium bowler andright hand batsman who is not of Anglo-Asian descent at all. He is Danishand first came to the county’s attention when playing for Denmark againstthe Kent Cricket Board in the NatWest Trophy of 1999.He has not yet been selected for the Academy – though many more performanceslike those he has been putting in of late and he could be there one day -but there is delight in Worcestershire and Northamptonshire that Kabir Aliand Monty Panesar respectively have been included on the shortlist.

Kabir Ali is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who hails from Birmingham. Hisearly cricket was in club cricket in Warwickshire where his father ShabirAli played club cricket, and he was then picked up by Worcestershire. Herepresented England Under 19s in both “Test” and one-day cricket and, stillonly 21 years of age, he has been making quite a name for himself by virtueof the best possible reason, namely taking wickets. It was a process that started last season when he only played in fourfirst-class matches but in that time took 14 wickets at 18.07 each, including five for 22 against Gloucestershire. That was the cheapest maidenfive-wicket return for Worcestershire, and he seems to specialise in makingan immediate impact. He took four for 29 on his Benson and Hedges Cup debutagainst Glamorgan in 2000 and took the gold award, in the same season thathe recorded his maiden first-class fifty against Nottinghamshire. He actually made his debut in 1999 with a single first-class match, playedten further games in 2000 when he appeared no more than a youngster whomight or might not make it. Then he made definite progress in 2001 beforehis form and performances this season have marked him out as a definiteprospect. He has extended his best bowling figures to seven for 43 and has contributedwith the bat as well, with his highest innings now standing at 51 not out. These are encouraging signs, for it is easy for a player to make an earlyimpression and then fade. Kabir Ali, rather than fading, has made steadyprogress and has impressed as good a judge as Rod Marsh, the Head Coach ofthe National Academy. If he does gain selection to party that eventually goes to Adelaide for thewinter, his other career will have to be put on hold. In his spare time, andto boost his income, Kabir Ali works as a male model. Now there have beenquite a few posers in the game, but Kabir Ali’s posing is done strictly forthe camera. When he gets his cricket kit on, he has consistently producedthe goods to show that he has a genuine future in the game.

Northamptonshire’s left-arm spinner Mudhsuden Singh Panesar (or “Monty” ashe is known throughout the game) does not have any pretensions as a fashionmodel, but he has the potential to develop as a model for other left-armorthodox spinners to follow. He learned his cricket in Bedfordshire, having been born in Luton and goingto Bedford Modern School. From there he went on to Loughborough Universityand with the close links between Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, he madehis first-class county debut last season having played a couple of years ofminor county cricket. Again, he made an immediate impact with match figuresof eight for 131 on his debut against Leicestershire with four for 11 in thesecond innings from 20 overs. In the first innings of that match he had to bowl at Shahid Afridi as hereached a century off 74 balls and went on to 164. Panesar did not suffertoo badly, for although his four wickets cost 120 runs, they were scored off35 overs. This was all part of the learning process that saw him feature in theEngland Under 19 side for two seasons. His has not been a rapid rise to thetop, for by the start of this season he had bowled just over 100 overs inhis two first-class matches. He has played in one more so far this season, taking his workload to 117.3 overs in three first-class matches, with 13wickets at 31.53 each. Those might not appear to spectacular figures, but there is a classical, timeless quality about his bowling action that suggests he might not go theway of so many of his type and suffer an attack of the ‘yips’. Certainly hehas done enough to impress the selectors and if he does make it to Adelaidefor the winter, watch out for the name of Monty Panesar establishing himselfas one of the best spin bowling prospects in English cricket.

Crystal Palace: Eagles make Ozan Kabak enquiry

Crystal Palace have enquired about Schalke defender Ozan Kabak as they continue their squad overhaul under Patrick Vieira [The Daily Mail].

The Lowdown: Vieira faces enormous overhaul

Potentially unrecognisable comparative to last season, newly appointed Palace manager Vieira will face the challenge of constructing a new-look roster following the contract expirations of over 20 first-team players [The Sun].

Already making serious inroads in the transfer market, the Eagles have moved to bring in no fewer than four signings in the form of Jacob Montes, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Remi Matthews [Transfermarkt].

Wasting no time ahead of the Premier League season, could they now be set to add a fifth summer acquisition following latest reports?

The Latest: Crystal Palace enquire about Kabak

Crystal Palace are said to be monitoring Turkey international Kabak and have contacted Schalke to ask about him, whilst he will likely leave Gelsenkirchen this window due to financial irregularities at his current employers [Daily Mail].

The South Londoners are believed to have been keen on the 21-year-old for a couple of months, who could be available for as little as £8.5 million plus add-ons.

Several Bundesliga clubs also hold an attraction to the 6 foot 1 defender.

The Verdict: Kabak would be an astute signing for the Eagles

Needing to bolster their defensive ranks, Kabak would represent an astute piece of business for Vieira’s men.

Clearly able to hold his own against at the highest level, Kabak played an important part in helping Liverpool to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2020/21, registering 13 appearances for the Merseyside giants after joining on loan in January [Transfermarkt].

Showing his domineering presence at the back for the Reds within this timeframe, he managed to keep an average total of three clearances per game in the Premier League [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘absolutely incredible’ by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Palace should move to sign the young defender and take advantage of Schalke’s troubling financial situation.

In other news, a pundit has exclusively backed a Crystal Palace pursuit of a reported target.

Waqar's men capable of bouncing back

Pakistan face Sri Lanka Wednesday in the second match of the Morocco Cup knowing how important it is for them to pick the maximum points to stay on course for Aug 21 final

Samiul Hassan14-Aug-2002Pakistan face Sri Lanka Wednesday in the second match of the Morocco Cup knowing how important it is for them to pick the maximum points to stay on course for Aug 21 final. For Sri Lanka, it will be a double header as they play South Africa Thursday to complete the first round action in this $250,000 double league competition.Pakistan were Monday let down both by the bowlers and the batsmen. But these are early days in the tournament and the team has the ability to bounce back and get back on victory track. Only fools would rule them out from this event after one defeat.Nevertheless, Pakistan will have to show a lot of professionalism to get their basics right, most importantly the team combination. There can be no two opinions that there were many flaws in their performance Monday. But that’s typical of Pakistan who are gradually earning the reputation of slow starters. The biggest mistake the team management committed Monday was to include Shahid Afridi as a specialist bowler. Shahid is a utility cricketer known for his exploits with the bat and potential to chip in with a few cheap overs in the middle of the innings. The decision to play five specialist bowlers makes sense. But going in the match with three specialists bowlers and two batting allrounders and that too against a team like South Africa was mindboggling. Also ignored was the fact that Saqlain Mushtaq was playing after coming from different conditions besides his wife is expecting a baby later this month.Pakistan also didn’t do their homework properly and their recent successes have been because they have kept the pressure on the opponents right through the innings after Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis have created the initial inroads. Shoaib Akhtar, coming at one change, used to exploit those situations.Waqar left South Africa struggling by picking the wickets of Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis. But there was no Shoaib to keep the momentum going as Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje broke the shackles and took the game away from Pakistan. As Shoaib is not in the team, paceman Mohammad Sami is the man who can do the job that is required. He has the pace and accuracy that is so very vital.Nonetheless, it may look simple for everyone to make these conclusions. But the bottomline is that the team management has problems of its own. They are in a fix and wondering whom to drop to include another specialist bowler for the upcoming games.Pakistan coach Mudassar Nazar admitted that changes would be made without going into details. On the face of it, it appears that either Younis Khan or Shahid Afridi will get the axe as Saqlain’s place looks secure as he has the confidence of the skipper. Shahid did his job with the bat, at least, and also showed his worth as a sixth bowler. That leaves Younis as the most probable candidate to sit out to make way for another bowler, most probably Sami. The other bad thing about Pakistan Monday was that all the frontline batsmen got starts but threw their hardwork out of the window with senseless shot selection. No partnerships were built and none of the big guns managed significant scores.Pakistan has the psychological edge over Sri Lanka after comprehensively defeating them in the final in April. Sri Lanka are also under tremendous pressure after producing a poor performance in England.”Past performances count for nothing as this is a fresh tournament,” Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya said.Teams (from):PAKISTAN: Waqar Younis (captain), Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul Haq, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Rashid Latif, Wasim Akram, Mohammad Sami, Azhar Mahmood, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah-ul-Haq.SRI LANKA: Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena, Aravinda de Silva, Russel Arnold, Hasantha Fernando, Chaminda Vaas, Chamila Gamage, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Charitha Buddika, Upul Chandana, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Pulasthi Gunaratne.

Já Marin teria consumido US$ 114 mil (R$ 357 mil).

Liverpool fans fume at Naby Keita claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy after Neil Jones’ claim that Naby Keita could sign a new Reds contract this summer.

The Guinean has endured a hugely frustrating Liverpool career to date, having arrived with such big expectations on his shoulders in 2018.

While Keita has still produced good performances at times, playing a part in the Reds’ success, there is no denying that he has been underwhelming overall.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Incredibly, Keita has still only made 76 appearances for Liverpool, with injury problems and patchy form both holding him back too often.

Despite this, Jones has claimed on The Kopite Podcast [via Anfield Edition] that he thinks the 26-year-old “will sign a new contract at Liverpool”, extending his stay at Anfield in the process.
