Celtic: Konur drops big Jota claim

Journalist Ekrem Konur believes Benfica winger Filipe Jota will soon be a Celtic player.

The Lowdown: Jota links

Celtic have already been busy this summer, bringing in exciting attacking players such as Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada.

Links to Jota emerged on Friday evening, with The Daily Record suggesting the 22-year-old is a potential loan addition.

Jota, primarily a left-winger, has made 34 senior appearances for Benfica but spent last season out on loan at Spanish side Real Valladolid.

It appears as if another temporary move away from Benfica could be on the cards, this time to Scotland.

The Latest: Konur’s post

Konur took to Twitter on Saturday lunchtime and placed a ‘soon’ emoji in between Jota and Celtic.

He then added an hourglass, paperwork and eyes emojis, which seems to point to the winger possibly becoming Dominic McKay’s 11th and final signing, should Celtic finalise Georgios Giakoumakis becoming the club’s 10th addition, as is expected.

The Verdict: Smart

With young wingers Mikey Johnston and Karamoko Dembele both picking up injuries in pre-season, Ange Postecoglou has had to rely on James Forrest, Abada and Furuhashi as wide options.

Furuhashi has been used in a central role on a number of occasions, so bringing in another out-and-out winger appears to be a smart move.

The Daily Record believe he could be brought in to fill the Ryan Christie gap, with the Scot, at this moment in time, set to become a free agent in the New Year.

Jota, therefore, would possibly arrive on a season-long loan deal, giving Postecoglou another option in an exciting attack for the entirety of the campaign.

Yorkshire set to defend Sharjah title

Cricinfo staff24-Oct-2008Yorkshire are the first county to confirm they will be returning to the UAE to take part in the pre-season Pro Arch Trophy, a tournament they won in 2008.The format of the competition will change in 2009 to include eight teams playing in two groups of four. The winners of each group will contest the final while the other teams will play the team that finished in the same position in the other group to decide their final standing.Although the other teams are yet to be confirmed, it is reported that Middlesex, Essex, Sussex and Surrey will join the UAE national side as well as an Emirates All-Star XI in Sharjah for the tournament which takes place between March 17 and 25.”We are looking forward to spending another pre-season in the UAE and I’m sure the team will be keen to defend their Pro Arch title,” Yorkshire chief executive, Stewart Regan, said. “Last season’s successful tour provided us with an exceptional foundation to take into the domestic season. The practice facilities and guaranteed weather make it an excellent place to get ready for the summer ahead and our one-day performances in particular definitely benefited from our Abu Dhabi preparation in 2008.”

Isso me ajudou bastante.

“Estamos focados no nosso trabalho.

Vettori pleased with fightback

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has praised his team for fighting back to win the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has praised his team for fighting back to win the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong. New Zealand were dismissed for 171 in the first innings, conceded a lead of 74, were set a target of 317 and completed the victory with three wickets in hand.”We didn’t play all that well in our first batting innings,” Vettori said. “We were pretty disappointed and the guys knew that it was not really acceptable putting on only 171. But I was pleased with the fightback to restrict Bangladesh to 240-odd in both innings because the pitch got better as the game went on. I still think we are a long way off from playing to our potential but we got the job done here and that has been pleasing.”New Zealand scraped through by three wickets largely due to a Man-of-the-Match performance from Vettori with both bat and ball. He took nine wickets and scored two half-centuries: his 76 in the second innings played a crucial part in New Zealand’s victory.”I was there as a nightwatchman,” Vettori said for he had come in at No. 4 late on the fourth day. “Obviously I played well in the first innings and thought that it was easier for a left-hander to play the spinners so I wanted to put myself up the order. I had some pretty good form and gave myself a chance before the next new ball and it worked out pretty well. I think it is always important for the captain to set standards so it was pleasing for me to have made a contribution with bat and ball.”Vettori underlined the concerns over the New Zealand batting, which has struggled throughout the tour, but lauded the efforts of the youngsters in the team. “We just asked our batsmen to put in a bit more commitment. Our batting hasn’t always stood up to the test but over the last day and a half it was very pleasing, particularly the performances of Aaron Redmond, who was playing his first Test in the subcontinent, and Daniel Flynn. The conditions weren’t easy but for those two young guys to stand up and show us that they want to perform has been very exciting for us as a team.”He gave credit to Bangladesh and believed they were “good enough to stay in Test cricket”, especially with the talent present in the squad. While Shakib Al Hasan stood out for the hosts with his first-innings figures of 7-36 and a gritty 71 in the second, Abdur Razzak was equally impressive with the ball and did most of the damage during the chase.”I was particularly impressed with Shakib. He maintained his line and length, bowled a lot and obviously batted well,” Vettori said. “For a young guy coming into his seventh or eighth Test match to bowl that well consistently must be very encouraging for the Bangladesh side. Shakib and Razzak bowled exceptionally well throughout the Test so it was not an easy challenge. If you look at the Bangladesh players from an individual level there are some really talented guys and now they have got to try and put it together as a team.”Having taken in a 1-0 lead, New Zealand will look to wrap up the two-Test series. The second Test begins on Saturday in Dhaka.

Bryce Hosannah set to leave Leeds

Leeds United youngster Bryce Hosannah is set to join National League side Wrexham on Deadline Day, according to Football Insider’s sources at Thorp Arch.

The Lowdown: Hosannah unwanted at Leeds

The 22-year-old is yet to make a single first-team appearance for the Whites, appearing three times for the Under-23s.

Marcelo Bielsa clearly doesn’t seem the youngster as a part of his plans moving forward, and he is open to look for a new club before the summer transfer window closes.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Youngster to join Wrexham

According to Football Insider’s Whites source, Hosannah has agreed to join Wrexham on a permanent two-year deal, with the Welsh club now co-owned by Hollywood acting pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The right-back’s current Leeds deal expires next summer, so it makes perfect sense to receive a fee for him now, rather than losing him for free in a year’s time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Good luck to him

It is important that any young player enjoys plenty of playing time, in order not to stunt their growth, so this should be a good move for Hosannah.

A two-year contract will give him a great chance to prove his worth in a far lower league – it may be that that ends up being his ceiling as a footballer. If it doesn’t, we could well see him climbing back up the ranks, and Leeds may be wise to insert a sell-on clause into any potential deal.

In other news, one Leeds player is reportedly able to leave the club on deadline day. Read more here.
