West Ham fans flock to club post on Zagreb

West Ham United are now gearing up for their first UEFA Europa League clash of the 2021/2022 campaign as they travel to Dinamo Zagreb, and there is certainly an air of real excitement.

David Moyes’ side overachieved with the squad they had last season and few expected their mighty climb to European football after they narrowly avoided relegation in 2019/2020.

O próximo jogo do Inter é contra o Criciúma, dia 8, novamente no Beira Rio.

Thorpe move from Spurs collapsed

Speaking to Football Insider, an industry source has shed light on Elliot Thorpe and his collapsed eleventh hour move to Hoffenheim from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Thorpe rejects new Spurs deal…

As per FI, the promising Wales Under-21 international rejected the offer of a new contract at Tottenham in order to join a club with a clear pathway to it’s first team.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the Lilywhites’ tabled new deal was swiftly knocked back by the 20-year-old but any buying club still had to pay Spurs compensation for his development costs.

Bundesliga giants Hoffenheim were on the verge of taking Thorpe in the summer, with an industry source now revealing how it all fell apart.

The Latest: Source drops revelation…

Speaking to FI, the source has explained exactly why Thorpe’s move to Germany disintegrated at the eleventh hour.

The plug was apparently pulled on the midfielder’s switch to Hoffenheim over Tottenham’s desired six-figure sum of compensation, even despite his contract previously being due to expire at the end of June.

Spurs had apparently protected their backs with the new deal offer as it meant he could not leave for free.

The move was so close to being done that Thorpe even passed a medical at Hoffenheim.

The Verdict: Bizarre twist…

It is always a bizarre twist when moves away collapse so suddenly over an unexpected issue, especially considering a medical had even been passed.

Alas, Thorpe will not have to worry about that aspect of joining a new team as he is now able to join any suitor on a free transfer – with Bristol City and Cardiff City thought to be in a two-horse race to sign the exciting talent.

Ponting holidays as Ferguson and Voges come in

Ricky Ponting will be rested from Australia’s next two matches despite the first-up defeat in Perth

Ricky Ponting will be rested from Australia’s next two matches despite the first-up defeat to New Zealand as the struggling team welcomes more new talent in Callum Ferguson and Adam Voges. Ponting has not had a break since the pre-season tour of India but the timing is strange considering the number of problems his team is having.Australia lost on the final ball in Perth to follow their one-day and Test defeats to South Africa in a summer where their aura has faded. “Ricky is keen to play every game and these next two games were no exception,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “However, it was always planned that Ricky would have a break at this time.”A 13-man squad was picked for Friday’s second contest in Melbourne and Sunday’s fixture in Sydney. “While this is a difficult decision, given the current performance of the team, in our view it is essential that Ricky has an opportunity to prepare for the forthcoming South Africa tour,” Hilditch said. The side leaves in two weeks for the Test and one-day campaigns.”My absolute priority is to the Australian cricket team,” Ponting was quoted as saying by AAP. “I wanted to play on through the coming week and continue to lead the team in the series against New Zealand. However, the decision was made by the national selection panel as part of their plan to rest all players at appropriate times during this year. I have reluctantly accepted their decision and will be eagerly awaiting my return to the team.”Ponting’s absence and Shaun Marsh’s hamstring injury, which he picked up while fielding in Perth, left two gaps and Ferguson and Voges were the fortunate ones. “Both are exciting young players with the attitude and talent to succeed at this level,” Hilditch said. A new opener will have to be found, with James Hopes, Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke, who is the captain, possible options alongside the new talent.Voges scored 80 not out in front of Hilditch for Western Australia on Sunday to remind the selectors of his talents. An attacking batsman, Voges, 29, will hope to add to his two Twenty20 games and single ODI in 2007.Ferguson, from South Australia, is 24 and has 302 runs in the FR Cup this season and had a strike-rate of 140 in the Twenty20 competition. At the end of last summer Ferguson sat down with his manager, father and Mark Sorell, South Australia’s coach, and decided to go to England to play league cricket to “get back into the habit of getting big scores”.Ever since he was the vice-captain of the Australia Under-19 side, Ferguson has been earmarked by good judges as a man likely to one day play for his country. However, until this season he had a tendency of failing to build on his starts and he said 2008-09 had been a breakthrough summer.”It’s been pleasing to be able to convert a few scores that I’ve managed to get off to a good start and then go on with it,” Ferguson said after learning of his call-up. “It’s probably been a stumbling point for me in the 18 months leading up to this season. It has been a bit of a breakthrough.”He learnt of his selection five minutes after being dismissed for 115 in South Australia’s Sheffield Shield loss to Victoria at the MCG, where the national selector Merv Hughes had also watched him make 81 in the first innings. It was his coach Sorell who delivered the happy news, which shocked Ferguson as much as anyone.”Thrilled to bits,” he said. “I haven’t had a chat to any of the selectors [although] obviously we’ve got Jamie Cox in South Australia so I see him around a fair bit. But this is a surprise for me.”He has grown into a stylish performer, but Ferguson said in December he was a “very boring batsman” as a child. “Because I wasn’t a big kid naturally, I’d always scored quite slowly because I couldn’t hit the boundaries or the sixes,” he said. “I never really thought of myself as a flashy player, but I did at times struggle with gear changes, being able to go up a gear when you do get some loose bowling and then bringing it down a gear when they’re doing well.”Australia squad David Warner, James Hopes, Callum Ferguson, Michael Clarke (capt), David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Cameron White, Adam Voges, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Bracken, Ben Hilfenhaus, Shaun Tait.

Flower unsure over long-term England job

Andy Flower, England’s interim coach, doesn’t yet know whether he wants to succeed Peter Moores in a full-time capacity

Andy Flower, England’s interim coach, doesn’t yet know whether he wants to succeed Peter Moores in a full-time capacity, but believes it is important that the team does have a leading figure in charge behind the scenes.Flower arrived in St Kitts on Wednesday as the senior coach for the tour of West Indies after the sacking of Moores earlier this month. However, he retains his title of assistant coach and wants to see how the next few months pan out before making any long-term plans.”I want to play it by ear and see how the next month goes,” he said. “In the short term it’s better to keep my contract as it is. I will be taking on some of the responsibilities that the lead coach would have.”With the departure of Moores the debate has opened up as to whether the team needs a head coach, especially given the number of backroom staff that now travel with the team. Although Moores has gone, Ottis Gibson remains as bowling coach, Richard Halsall as fielding coach and Mushtaq Ahmed has come onboard in a spin capacity.”A coach is necessary, but the debate over the exact structure is an interesting one,” said Flower, who was part of a seminar in Leicestershire earlier this week which discussed the topic with a panel of former captains. “I think as long as you get the right people there are various structures that might work. The most important thing is getting the right people in.”Flower said he is looking forward to working alongside Andrew Strauss in the Caribbean and the pair exchanged “numerous” phonecalls in the two weeks before the tour. Strauss said he wants to give the players more responsibility for their own requirements and while Flower is happy to support that view he still believes some players need more guidance than others.”It is always a balance as coaches between what a player wants and needs,” he said. “The players will acknowledge that and it shifts a little with more senior players and the younger ones. You are always trying to make that judgment. Strauss wants coaches to play a more supportive role and I’m quite happy to support that role.”Flower doesn’t foresee any problems working with Kevin Pietersen during the trip, even though he was on Pietersen’s hit list of people he wanted to move out of the England set-up.”That’s the way I understand it,” Flower said. “I’ve had a chat with Kevin, he did want a regime change but I haven’t gone into any specifics with him. We have always had a good relationship, I’m not sure if it’s the southern African thing, and I don’t see us having any problems. It’s been very open”We all have our differences, you aren’t always going to be buddy-buddy. You don’t always have to get on perfectly and it’s healthy to have debate. With this guy [Pietersen], he’s a world-class performer so it’s not some much telling them what to do but discussing options and it’s the players’ right to take it or not.”One player Flower has certainly had a positive impact on is Strauss and the time the pair have spent together came to light during Strauss’s twin hundreds in Chennai when he played the Indian spinners superbly. Though Flower is renowned as one of the greatest players of spin of all time, he was modest about his own impact.”Equally I’ve worked with other players and they didn’t have a good trip,” he said. “We as coaches do our work and discuss cricket with them [the players] a lot, but ultimately it is down to them.” Strauss will be more than happy to hear that mantra from Flower. They both appear to be on the same wavelength and what England need right now is a captain and coach who can work together.

Southampton: Hasenhuttl must axe Yan Valery

Southampton host Wolves at St Mary’s in the Premier League on Saturday as they go in search of their first top-flight win of the season.

The Saints have picked up four draws and one defeat from five league matches this season, whilst winning both of their Carabao Cup games against Newport County and Sheffield United.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side beat the Blades on penalties after a 2-2 draw in midweek, with a number of players given chances to show that they deserve a place in the starting XI against Wolves.

One player who was handed an opportunity to shine against the Blades was 22-year-old right-back Yan Valery, who came in for Tino Livramento.

However, the Frenchman failed to take his chance with both hands as he produced a worrying performance against Sheffield United. He was given a SofaScore rating of 6.5, better than only Moussa Djenepo and Lyanco.

As per SofaScore, Valery lost seven of his 11 ground duels and 50% of his aerial battles. He also made zero tackles as he was dribbled past three times during the game. This shows that he was too weak defensively and easy to play against for the Blades wingers, who were able to breeze past him with ease as he failed to win even one tackle in the 90 minutes.

He did not fare much better on the ball. As per SofaScore, he failed with seven of his eight crossing attempts and three of his six dribbles. The defender also gave away possession 15 times, providing just one key pass and one off-target shot. This shows that he offered next to nothing defensively or offensively, which makes him something of a liability to the team as he is not contributing at either end.

Livramento has started all five of Southampton’s Premier League matches this season and averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.80. He has made 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game whilst winning 56% of his duels so far.

This suggests that the summer signing from Chelsea is able to perform to a higher standard than Valery whilst winning a higher percentage of his battles against the opposition and providing more defensive quality in the tackle. For this reason, Hasenhuttl must ruthlessly axe the 22-year-old from the XI to reinstate his youngter team-mate back into the side for the clash with Wolves on Sunday.
