Unrepentant Clarke comes out fighting

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, has said he remains unrepentant in spite of the criticism aimed at the board, while revealing that he received over 9000 emails urging him not to resign

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, has said he remains unrepentant in spite of the criticism aimed at the board, while revealing that he received over 9000 emails urging him not to resign.Clarke was re-elected as chairman yesterday after Lord Marland of Odstock, his only potential challenger, withdrew from the race – just a week after Sir Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire with whom the ECB had invested so much of England’s future, was charged with fraud “of a shocking magnitude” by US authorities.Neil Davidson, the Leicestershire chairman, was one who thought Clarke’s position was untenable. However, when asked whether he ever considered handing in his notice, Clarke said: “I haven’t and that’s not because I’m bull-headed or ignorant about other people’s opinions – I’ve had over 9,000 emails saying ‘pay no attention’.”I have to live with the consequences of the decisions our board takes and the criticisms that we receive,” he told BBC Radio Five. “There has been some criticism which I think is constructive and sensible and we’ll listen to. There has also been some singularly unpleasant stuff which I fail to see is going to encourage anybody to take on voluntary unpaid jobs.”It’s true that I have received a lot of criticism in the media, some of it hysterical and utterly irrational, some of it immensely rude. I discard those people.”I don’t know what people would have said at the time had we not done the deal and had we not allowed our players the chance to play for US$20 millionIn addition, Clarke defended the ECB’s decision to strike such a huge financial deal with Stanford. “I don’t know what people would have said at the time had we not done the deal and had we not allowed our players the chance to play for US$20 million. There has been a lot of sagacious hindsight. We entered into the agreement with Stanford in good faith and we believed we were helping West Indies, who were, after all, a contractual party to this.”The ECB severed all ties with Stanford last week, shredding the potentially lucrative deal which would have earned the board and its players millions of pounds. In an interview in the Times Clarke also addressed the question of whether he thought he had done a good job. “But for the strong action taken at a very difficult ICC meeting, we would be welcoming Zimbabwe in April … that’s a huge achievement. We have a lot more people playing the game and a lot more clubs with decent facilities. When I came in, we didn’t have any financial reserves at all, but now we are in good financial health, which allows us to spend 21%of our income on grassroots cricket.”

Man City fans excited by Vlahovic news

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City supporters have been left excited by news on Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic as the Sky Blues continue their search for a centre-forward.

Pep Guardiola guided City to a Premier League title and Carabao Cup-winning campaign last year, as well as a Champions League final, while barely playing with a natural centre-forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Club legend Sergio Aguero was the subject of many absences through fitness issues or coronavirus, while Gabriel Jesus was arguably struggling to find his best form at some points.

As such, Guardiola often deployed a false nine or makeshift centre-forward options like Raheem Sterling, and despite their success, much of City’s summer window was dominated by discussion of signing a star striker.

The likes of Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo were targeted by sporting director Txiki Begiristain with news now emerging on yet another target.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the club ‘dream’ of signing La Viola star Vlahovic amid his ongoing contract dispute at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

His deal runs out in 2023 as it stands, meaning City could have some leverage in potential negotiations to sign the dazzling 21-year-old who scored 21 Serie A goals last season and 35 in all competitions since his move to Fiorentina (Transfermarkt).

Begiristain and co are showing an intense interest as as supporters get excited by this news, find all of their best verdicts from Twitter down below.

Fat men can dive

Plays of the Day from the third day of the Hamilton Test between New Zealand and India

Sidharth Monga in Hamilton20-Mar-2009

Start as you mean to go
Yuvraj Singh flicked the first ball he played today – the second of the day – off his pads towards square leg. Martin Guptill misfielded and allowed it to go to the boundary. That stroke kickstarted a flurry of fours from the batsmen – seven in all – in the first four overs of the day. Even before they had warmed up, New Zealand were facing the heat.Fat men can dive
Chris Martin managed to cramp Sachin Tendulkar, who was shaping to play the cut, for room. But Tendulkar created space by arching his back and then opened the face to guide the ball towards point.. It seemed a certain four, but Jesse Ryder dived full-length to his left from backward point and cut it off. Is Adam Parore watching?Walk on
When Mahendra Singh Dhoni cut a wide delivery from Iain O’Brien, Ryder pulled off another athletic effort at gully, diving to his right this time, and claimed a low one-handed catch. Dhoni refused to walk, and was told by the crowd to “walk mate”. Replays showed the ball might have touched the ground before reaching Ryder’s hand. Dhoni was booed when the not-out decision was finally made. Three balls later, he went for a hook, gloved it, and walked right away. This time he was cheered.Zak gets lucky
The boundary at the City End was Zaheer Khan’s luckiest part of the ground. While batting at the Members End, he got his first reprieve when Martin didn’t account for the wind and ended up dropping an overhead catch which he initially seemed to have judged properly. Then Zaheer slashed while batting at the City End and the ball soared towards third man. Daniel Flynn was late to run in and could not reach a regulation chance. Zaheer finished unbeaten on 51.Four for all
When Munaf Patel went down on his knee, and swept Daniel Vettori with one hand to the square-leg boundary to get off the mark, he became the eighth Indian batsman in the innings to start scoring with a boundary. Tendulkar Yuvraj Singh and VVS Laxman started with one, two and two respectively.Do your job, watchman
In the last over of the day, Kyle Mills, the nightwatchman survived a close lbw shout, saved by the inside edge, and wanted a single to fine leg. But Daniel Flynn, the specialist batsman, reminded Mills of his job – to shield the batsmen – and refused the single. The next four balls were hell for Mills as he survived another close lbw thanks to another inside edge. But finally on the last ball, Munaf managed to hit the pad before the bat and got his man. Mills’ job, theoretically, was done.

Wenham praises Romero

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur insider/club source John Wenham has made a claim involving summer signing and new Lilywhites starlet Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs snap up MVP…

After Fabio Paratici’s first summer transfer window as managing director, you could certainly make the argument that Romero comes as Spurs’ biggest blockbuster signing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

One of the most promising centre-back in world football, the Argentina international stood out as Serie A’s most solid presence last year – clinching the 2020/2021 MVP award for best defender.

As a result, Wenham believes that Spurs have another promising world class talent on their hands amid the plethora of youngsters already emerging from Hotspur Way.

The Latest: Wenham makes Romero claim…

Speaking to FI, the club source/insider has explained exactly why he thinks Romero can be ‘massive’ for Spurs and Nuno Espirito Santo.

“There is a really high ceiling there,” he explained.

“Romero needs to be our Roberto Ayala, that top tier Argentinian centre half who wins everything in the air.

“I know his English isn’t great but it is improving based on what I’ve seen on social media. I think he’s going to get even better on and off the pitch as the season goes on.

“Romero was solid yesterday, brilliant, especially up against two forwards I rate very highly. I think it’s the first time Ings hasn’t scored at the new stadium.

“Villa have very good attacking players and Romero kept them quiet. He made very few mistakes.

“I want to see him become a permanent fixture for the next decade, he’s at the right age to do that. He can be massive”.

The Verdict: Exciting times…

Adding Romero to the pool of talent already at Spurs certainly bodes well for the future in north London and, once he gets fully settled after a period of time, he could go on to become one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.

A Serie A MVP winner already who made far more interceptions per 90 (3.1) than any Lilywhites player last season, it’s safe to say he has a chance to be a Spurs legend if he reaches his potential in north London.

Phillip Hughes will use some downtime after his heroics in South Africa to freshen up for his first Ashes experience. Hughes, who scored 415 runs at 69.16 in his opening three Tests, was not picked in the limited-overs squads and arrived back in Sydney on Wednesday.Hughes, 20, has a six-week contract with the English county Middlesex that he will use to prepare for Australia’s defence of the Ashes. “I’m not disappointed about the one-day side, I wasn’t thinking about it to tell you the truth,” Hughes told the Daily Telegraph.”I just wanted to get home and get fresh before heading back to England to prepare for the Ashes. I’d love to play one-day cricket one day for Australia, but I’m only 20 and I’ve got time on my side.”Hughes said his time in South Africa was “an experience I’ll never forget” and he was pleased to have come through his exchanges with the home fast bowlers. “I remember watching the likes of Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini on television and thinking what a great attack they were,” he said.”But I spoke with Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Simon Katich about how they’d try and come at me so we sat down and had a few plans. I’ve gained a lot of confidence from that, and now I’ll worry about Middlesex and then the Ashes.”

Man City fans flock to Foden update

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City supporters have erupted over a claim involving Sky Blues star and exciting talent Phil Foden.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 21-year-old has been making waves on the senior stage since he started playing far more regularly under Pep Guardiola in 2020 – earning a call up to England’s Euro 2020 squad and being nominated for the Men’s Ballon d’Or since then.

Foden is now a regular on the City team sheet and played a heavy hand in their run to the 2021 Champions League final, even scoring the winning goal in both legs of their quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund.

As such, it is little wonder that sporting director Txiki Begiristain wishes to tie down the star playmaker with fresh terms as The Athletic share a big boost.

According to their information, Foden is now close to signing a new deal at Eastlands and there are not thought to be any ‘big barriers’ to a full agreement.

While the contract is not yet finalised, this update could prove pivotal to the Premier League champions.

Flocking to this news, it’s little wonder Sky Blues are excited by this update on their starlet – find all of their verdicts down below.
