Delhi continue push for semi-final berth

Delhi Daredevils are sitting pretty, relatively speaking, on top of the league. They have 14 points with a match in hand over the teams at No. 2 and 3, and two games in hand over the rest. Barring an astonishing change in form for the worse, they are virtually assured of a semi-final berth. A victory against Deccan Chargers at Kingsmead today will all but ensure it.Delhi’s success is a result of them being the most settled side in the competition. Unlike most teams, they are strong in both batting and bowling departments and found their winning combination early in the tournament. Even when Delhi were forced to make changes – Manoj Tiwary broke his hand and Virender Sehwag missed their last four games due to injury – their bench strength has slotted seamlessly into the game plan and maintained the winning momentum. The odds are against Deccan but if they manage to pull off an upset, they will share the top spot with Delhi. Deccan started the tournament on the hottest streak – four straight wins – but then suffered three consecutive defeats, the first one against Delhi. However, they’ve put in strong performances in their last three games, of which they’ve won two, leaving them with 12 points from ten games. The addition of overseas players Andrew Symonds and Chaminda Vaas has helped keep them in contention for the semi-finals.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Delhi Daredevils – WWWLW
Delhi have rarely suffered a top-order collapse in the tournament because one of their overseas players in the top-order has always come good. AB de Villiers averages 67.75 with 271 runs in seven innings while Tillakaratne Dilshan averages just under 50. David Warner’s form at the top has ensured that Sehwag hasn’t been missed too much. In order to play Warner, Delhi have benched Daniel Vettori and credit must go to the others who have stepped up in the absence of the world’s best spinner. Ashish Nehra is among the top wicket-takers in the tournament with 14 at 16.14 apiece while legspinner Amit Mishra has conceded less than six runs per over on average and taken eight wickets.Deccan Chargers – WLWLL
Symonds has been a welcome addition to Deccan’s middle-order and he has scored 90 runs in two innings at a strike-rate of 163. Deccan have not had one substantial contributor through the tournament and have relied on useful innings from T Suman, Dwayne Smith and Rohit Sharma for their scores. Adam Gilchrist’s form, however, is a worry. He started the tournament superbly but now averages only 26.50 after ten innings.Deccan’s bowling has been more consistent. Their leading wicket-takers, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, have received unexpected support from Sharma, who has managed ten wickets at 8.80 apiece and an economy-rate of 5.86.Team newsIf Sehwag should return from injury in today’s game, Delhi will have to tweak their batting line-up. Sehwag, if he should come back, is likely to replace Mithun Manhas while Warner drops down the order. It’s unlikely that Daniel Vettori will return given that Delhi’s bowlers have performed even in his absence. If Sehwag isn’t fit then Delhi will play the same side with Manhas in the middle order.Delhi Daredevils (possible): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 David Warner, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Dirk Nannes, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Pradeep Sangwan.Deccan are also unlikely to make changes to the team that swept aside Rajasthan Royals by 53 runs.Deccan Chargers (possible): 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt & wk), 2 T Suman, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Andrew Symonds, 5 Dwayne Smith, 6 Chaminda Vaas, 7 Venugopal Rao, 8 D Ravi Teja, 9 RP Singh, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Shoaib Ahmed.Stats and trivia Delhi is the only team in the IPL to average more than 30 runs per wicket. They have lost only 35 wickets in nine matches, at an average of 35.28 and a run rate of 7.82 runs per over. Deccan have lost 63 in ten at an average of 23.69 and a run rate of 7.96. The opening partnerships have been pretty successful for both Delhi and Deccan. Delhi average 36.75 for the first wicket, at a rate of 7.77 per over, while for Deccan the corresponding numbers are 30.20 and 9.11. Spin has been a much bigger weapon for Deccan than for Delhi: spinners have accounted for 28 wickets for Deccan, at an average of 16.71 and an economy rate of 6.53. For Delhi, spinners have taken 15 wickets at 24.40 and an economy rate of 6.88.Head-to-head recordDelhi won the first match against Deccan this season by six wickets, thanks to Nannes’ opening spell, during which he removed both Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs cheaply, and Dilshan’s steady half-century during the chase.Delhi also won both their matches against Deccan last season. They won their home game by 12 runs and the away game by a nine-wicket margin.

Smallbone may hand Saints big injury boost

After securing their first Premier League win of the season over the weekend with a 1-0 victory against Leeds United, Southampton have another big game on the horizon with Burnley making the trip to St. Mary’s to try and get their first win of the campaign.

Southampton are set to be without James Ward-Prowse as a result of the three-game ban he picked up during the Saints’ 3-1 defeat against Chelsea before the recent international break, as well as defender Jack Stephens after he picked up a serious knee injury during the club’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City.

Thus, Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to make do with the players he currently has at his disposal as they try and grab their second win of the season.

However, it seems as though there could be one positive thrown their way ahead of the match at the weekend that could be a big boost for the team.

What’s the latest?

Saints midfielder Will Smallbone recently played the full 90 minutes of Southampton’s U23 match against Wolves, the first time he has done so since he damaged his ACL back in January.

As a product of Southampton’s youth academy, Smallbone made his senior debut for the Saints back in January 2020 during a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup after working his way through their youth teams.

Specifically, the 21-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made 52 appearances for the U18 side, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, 41 appearances for Southampton’s B side, scoring seven goals and providing five assists along the way.

Smallbone also has 13 senior appearances under his belt, scoring once and adding two assists to his career tally, showing he is a very useful midfielder in terms of creating and scoring goals.

This also highlights just how devastating the injury he suffered was given how promising he’d become for the club beforehand.

Taking all of this into account, we feel that it would be massive, not just for Smallbone, but for the Southampton fans who would be thrilled to see him potentially get back on the pitch, especially considering how long he was out of action for.

Looking ahead to the Burnley match, if Smallbone is fully fit enough to play a part in the game against Sean Dyche’s side, we feel that it would be good for him to get some time on the pitch, but not too much considering the severity of his injury so it would therefore probably be best for Hasenhuttl to gently ease him back into it rather than throw him in from the start.

Confira a nota oficial do Flamengo

Cricinfo previews the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kolkata Knight Riders in Durban

The Preview by George Binoy29-Apr-2009Match factsApril 29, 2009
Start time 12.30pm (10.30GMT)Big PictureBrendon McCullum will have to step up after Gayle’s departure to prevent his team from free-falling•Getty Images

The first match of Wednesday’s double-header in Durban is between two teams that are at the bottom of the league – Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangalore Royal Challengers. Kolkata’s campaign has been plagued by all sorts of issues – multiple-captaincy, a mystery blogger, players being cut from the squad – and they are presently second from bottom with three defeats in five matches. Bangalore is the only team with a worse record. They’ve lost four matches on the trot after winning the first one.Bangalore had to contend with the loss of Rahul Dravid, who returned to India for the birth of his second child, in the last game against Delhi Daredevils. They did not fare too well, with their batsmen managing only 149 runs. The top order continued to be a concern: Bangalore have lost an opener for a duck in each game and invariably ended up two or three down by the end of the Powerplay, leaving an out-of-form middle order with too much to do. Tomorrow’s match is likely to be Kevin Pietersen’s last in this tournament – the Lord’s Test against West Indies begins on May 6 – and he will be keen to sign off with a win.Kolkata are also likely to lose their most valuable batsman, Chris Gayle, after this game and his absence will hurt them because the rest of the batsmen are struggling for momentum. Their bowlers took a pounding against Mumbai Indians but they are likely to perform much better against Bangalore’s batsmen.Form guideBangalore: Mark Boucher cracked a brisk 36 in his first match, against Delhi, but there’s little else to shout about for Bangalore. Apart from Jacques Kallis, the rest of the batsmen average below 20 with Robin Uthappa bringing up the bottom with 38 runs in five innings. There’s almost no good news on the bowling front too. Their highest wicket-taker, Anil Kumble, has taken only one wicket in the last four games (after taking five in the first). Kallis has appalling figures of 1 for 135 from 11 overs.Kolkata: Gayle is Kolkata’s highest run-scorer with 107 in four innings but he’s 11th among the top run-getters in the tournament. Brad Hodge hasn’t pulled his weight as an overseas player – 70 runs in four matches – and neither has the captain Brendon McCullum. Ishant Sharma, with four wickets and an economy of under seven runs per over, is Kolkata’s best bowler but their other medium-pacers have failed to provide adequate back-up.Watch out forOut-of-form captains: Bangalore picked up Pietersen for a whopping $1.55 million and made him the captain as well but he has done nothing of note in the tournament. Pietersen has scored only 80 runs in five innings but looked to have regained form against Delhi before an ill-advised switch-hit ended his cameo. He will be itching to leave the IPL with a match-winning performance. One captain who’s done even worse that Pietersen is Kolkata’s new leader McCullum. He’s one half of a potentially devastating opening partnership with Gayle but McCullum’s devastated only to the tune of 26 runs in four innings. McCullum will have to step up after Gayle’s departure to prevent his team from free-falling.Team newsBangalore’s worries begin with their opening combination. Uthappa’s been given extremely long rope and, if they don’t drop him, Bangalore must consider pushing him down the order. The other options for the opener’s slot are Virat Kohli and Wasim Jaffer, who hasn’t played a match this season. Most of overseas players they’ve used – Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn – haven’t contributed significantly with either bat or ball and Bangalore could give allrounder Roelof van der Merwe a go.Bangalore: 1 Virat Kohli, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 4 Robin Uthappa (wk), 5 Roelof van der Merwe/Ross Taylor, 6 Mark Boucher, 7 B Akhil, 8 R Vinay Kumar, 9 Pankaj Singh, 10 Anil Kumble, 11 KP Appanna.Kolkata have 11 Indians in their squad, out of which they have to select seven, and eight overseas players at the moment, out of which only four can play. The overseas options, apart from those who played the last game against Mumbai, are Moises Henriques, Charl Langeveldt, Mashrafe Mortaza and Angelo Mathews and they won’t help strengthen the batting which is the main concern. Anureet Singh did not bat against Mumbai because of an injury and he could be replaced by Murali Kartik.Kolkata: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Brendon McCullum (capt & wk), 3 Brad Hodge, 4 Sourav Ganguly, 5 Laxmi Ratan Shukla, 6 Yashpal Singh, 7 Arindam Ghosh, 8 Ishant Sharma, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Murali Kartik, 11 Ashok Dinda.Head-to-head recordMcCullum smashed 158 off 73 balls to annihilate Bangalore by 140 runs in the opening game of the IPL last season. Kolkata won their home game at the Eden Gardens as well by five runs after Bangalore were restricted to 126 for 4 in 16 overs.

Southampton linked with move for Fulgini

So far this season, Southampton have only managed to win one of their opening eight Premier League games, scoring just six goals in the process.

Given their fairly underwhelming goals record so far, it seems as though the club are looking at potentially signing a player in the upcoming January transfer window that could help get their forward line firing again for the rest of the campaign.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Football Insider that Southampton are interested in signing Angers midfielder Angelo Fulgini in January, who apparently could be available to buy for as little as £12.6m.

The report also claims that fellow Premier League clubs Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion are also interested in signing the Frenchman, which could potentially make it difficult for the Saints to sign him.

Attacking spark

Since joining Angers back in the 2017 summer transfer window, the 25-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 134 appearances for the club in which he has managed to score 20 goals and provide 14 assists along the way.

So far this season, despite predominantly being a midfielder, Fulgini has played in all of Angers’ Ligue 1 games in a range of positions across the midfield and attack, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process, which could make him a great purchase for Southampton as a versatile and attack-minded midfielder.

His goal came during Angers’ previous league outing in their 2-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

In addition to this, Fulgini, who has been praised in the past by Angers manager Gerald Baticle for the “quality” he has in him, has also managed to rack up an average of 1.9 shots at goal per game in Ligue 1, showing himself to be a real attacking threat. For context, that tally would place him third in the south-coast side’s ranks with only Adam Armstrong and Moi Elyounoussi producing a higher volume.

Regarding a potential move to Southampton in January, we feel that the Saints should definitely explore the possibility of signing Fulgini to see if he can spark some life into their attack throughout the remainder of the season. If he is able to do that and help keep them out of a potential relegation battle then supporters would understandably be buzzing with his acquisition.

Their start to the campaign has been uninspiring so they certainly need an extra dose of potency in the final third.
