Gauteng seeks arbitration to resolve dispute

CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka said the GCB had rejected the mediation agreement and wanted the impasse to be resolved through an arbitrator

Cricinfo staff28-Jul-2009Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) board of directors will meet on Thursday regarding the dispute with the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) over the stripping of the Wanderers’ international status.Last Friday, CSA had agreed to Gauteng’s request for mediation and had asked the sports ministry to intervene. However, CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka said the GCB had now rejected the mediation agreement, and wanted the impasse to be resolved through an arbitrator.”CSA received a letter from GCB’s CEO which in essence rejected our acceptance of an offer for mediation, as well as the Ministerial intervention,” Nyoka said. “Further, GCB went ahead with its own unilateral deadline of July 24, 2009 and sent an arbitration application the day before this. GCB’s intentions to resolve this matter are doubtful.”The tussle started when the GCB accused the CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, the BCCI and IPL organisers of mismanaging the 2009 event soon after the league ended. In response, the CSA members forum warned that the South African board would not allot any international matches to Wanderers unless GCB apologised. If the issue is not resolved, Wanderers could lose out on three matches during England’s tour to South Africa in November-December.

Spurs hold Vlahovic meeting

As per a report by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), there has been a big development in the race to sig Dusan Vlahovic and it involves Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Conte era begins…

The new era of Antonio Conte has officially begun at Tottenham and it’s safe to say that his arrival comes with plenty of excitement and anticipation.

Tipped to bring a high intensity style of football back to Spurs by Serie A experts, the promise of how he can implement a more exciting brand of football is matched only by his pull in the transfer market.

Claims from Italy suggest that the 52-year-old’s presence at N17 could open the door for Tottenham to bag a host of Serie A stars and one of the biggest names is Fiorentina striker Vlahovic.

There have been no shortage of links to the player since Conte came through the door and now La Gazzetta have made a pretty exciting claim.

The Latest: Meeting held in London; Spurs favourites

As per their sources, via SW, a meeting has already been held with Tottenham in London as La Viola officials fly to discuss a deal which could be worth around €70m (£59.9m) to the Serie A side.

What’s more, Vlahovic could personally earn around €6m-per-year (£5.1m) in a possible Spurs move with the Lilywhites and managing director Fabio Paratici potentially prepared to pay big.

La Gazzetta also say that Tottenham are ‘perhaps the favourite’ to get a deal done for Vlahovic.

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

Given his phenomenal goalscoring haul of 21 in Serie A alone last season, not to mention the fact he has continued in that vain so far this year, we believe he is the first priority for Spurs going forward.

Refusing to put pen to paper on a new deal, with his contract expiring in 2023, Tottenham are in a fairly strong negotiating position and could even whittle the £59.9m price down theoretically.

Lauded as a ‘really crazy’ player by former Bulgaria international Valeri Bojinov, we believe this update should come as exciting for Spurs fans with a meeting now held.

Hussey's hundred just a start

Phase one of David Hussey’s plan to regain his one-day place has been achieved with his first ODI hundred, but he knows more will be needed before he wins another promotion

David Hussey has lost his spot in Australia’s 50-over side but is desperate for another chance•Associated Press

Phase one of David Hussey’s plan to regain his one-day place has been achieved with his first ODI hundred, but he knows more will be needed before he wins another promotion. Hussey spent most of the 2007-08 season as a fixture in the side without demanding a regular spot and was omitted for the England and Champions Trophy 50-over campaigns. What he still has is a Twenty20 position and because Australia were using the one-dayer against Scotland as preparation for Sunday’s match against England, he was given a go. After 87 balls he had 111, having boomed five sixes and 10 fours in the type of innings which got him noticed originally with Victoria.”I haven’t really set any targets, I’m just taking every opportunity I can now,” Hussey said. “I missed a little bit with one-day international cricket, I haven’t grabbed it with both hands. For me any opportunity I get the aim is to take full toll.”In 22 ODIs before the game in Edinburgh he had four half-centuries but no certainty and was unsure of the reasons for his troubles. “I kept getting out, unfortunately,” he said. “Hopefully I get another chance and will be a bit better prepared and the results will be a lot different. The first [hundred] against Scotland, great wicket, great ground, one I’ll remember.”Hussey, who was wearing four layers to counter the cold, took out his frustration on the offspinner Majid Haq, launching him for four sixes in three overs. The next goal is to back up at Old Trafford on Sunday, when England hope to build on their Ashes success in the shortest form of the game.”We put a good statement on how we want to play, so far so good,” Hussey said. “We’ve won one, hopefully we can win one on Sunday.”Hussey will be in England for only 10 days before going back to Victoria and gearing up for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India. “It’s not ideal,” he said of the schedule, “but you’ve got to adapt to different situations”.While Australia won by 189 runs, Scotland were not disappointed in their display. As Hussey was accelerating the tourists were heading for a lot more than their 345 all out. Gordon Goudie helped stop a late burst by taking four wickets in his final two overs to finish with 5 for 73.”I’m very happy with the way we handled ourselves in the last 10 overs of their innings because they could have gone on to get 400,” the captain Gavin Hamilton said. “For Gordon to pick up five wickets against Australia is second to none. We came hard at them with the bat because that’s the way we want to play, and we found out a lot about the character of a few personnel.”

Liverpool handed Elliott injury boost

After completing his loan spell in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers last season, where he managed to score seven goals and provide 11 assists in 42 appearances, Liverpool winger Harvey Elliott broke into Jurgen Klopp’s side at the start of this season, starting three out of their first four league games of the campaign.

Unfortunately for the 18-year-old, he suffered a serious ankle injury during the 3-0 win over Leeds United back in September which has kept him out of action ever since.

Despite this setback, though, it now seems as though there is light at the end of the tunnel for the youngster.

What’s the latest?

On Monday, Elliott completed some exercises on Liverpool’s outside training pitches for the first time since undergoing surgery on his ankle, which will surely leave a lot of Reds fans buzzing.

Given how the Merseysiders have had some other injury issues in recent weeks with the likes of Naby Keita, James Milner and Roberto Firmino, it’s safe to say that this update on the teenager will be a welcome slice of good news for Kopites.

While there may still be a way to go before he recovers fully and is able to get back in matchday action with the rest of his Liverpool teammates, this is still a big step forward for Elliott and his overall recovery given the severity of his injury.

In the four league games he played for Liverpool before sustaining his injury, the teenager – who is currently valued at £13.5m according to Transfermarkt – racked up an average of 1.8 shots and 1.3 key passes per game, proving to be as a real attacking threat for Klopp’s side even though he hadn’t scored or set up a goal.

Moving forward, if Elliott can proceed with the rest of his recovery with success, he has shown that he definitely has what it takes to get himself back in the team and continue being a useful attacking midfield option for the Reds. That could ultimately make him an important part of Liverpool’s push for the Premier League title by the end of the campaign, especially if he can add some goals and assists to his locker.

Keno fez o gol alviverde, enquanto o centroavante Robert, aquele ex-Palmeiras, igualou o placar.

A primeira escalação palmeirense teve: Vinícius; Fabiano, Antônio Carlos, Luan e Zé Roberto; Thiago Santos, Bruno Henrique e Guerra; Keno, Guedes e Borja.

Hart has been Ange’s star this season

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side endured a rather shaky start to their 2021/22 Scottish Premiership campaign, things have undoubtedly started to click under the leadership of the 56-year-old Hoops boss in recent months.

Indeed, a number of the Greek-Australian manager’s summer signings have hit a run of excellent form, with Kyogo Furuhashi having scored 13 goals and registered three assists over his 18 appearances for the club, Benfica loanee Jota having bagged six goals and six assists over his 14 fixtures in green and white and Liel Abada having netted seven goals and provided five assists over 22 appearances for the Hoops.

However, while the argument could be made that any one of these three players have been Celtic’s signing of the season, there is perhaps one summer addition who could be classified as something of an unsung hero at Parkhead – in the shape of Joe Hart.

Indeed, having arrived at Parkhead following two seasons in which the 34-year-old had played just 13 games of football, Hart has slotted into the role of Postecoglou’s number one seamlessly, with the former England international’s experience in the game bringing with it a sense of calmness and stability between the Celtic sticks that was desperately lacking last season.

This is an opinion that Chris Sutton clearly agrees with, as the former Bhoys centre-forward recently said of the shot-stopper: “I think he’s done really really well. What he had strongly in his favour was [Vasilis] Barkas and [Scott] Bain have just been so poor in the Celtic goal and it was a low bar. But he’s come in and it’s been a massive boost.

“I think that he’s brought a calmness and an authority at the back. You watched Celtic [last season], and with the greatest of respect to Barkas and Bain, every time they were in goal you thought Celtic are going to concede the goal. I don’t feel the same with Joe Hart and I think that’s an enormous deal. I think his experience has been important. I think he’s been an enormous signing and a massive plus for Celtic.”

Indeed, this is something that is reflected in the £1.8m-rated man’s statistics, as, over his 12 Scottish Premiership appearances, Hart has kept six clean sheets, won 85% of his duels and made an average of 1.8 saves per game – with these returns seeing the 34-year-old average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.91.

As such, while Kyogo, Jota and Abada may well steal the headlines for Celtic, the veteran goalkeeper has undoubtedly been just as important for the Bhoys this season, as the £15k-per-week shot-stopper has been the rock which Postecoglou is building his side upon.

Rhodes answers angry members

Steve Rhodes declared himself “very much encouraged” as Worcestershire continued to have the best of their championship game against Nottinghamshire

George Dobell at New Road26-Aug-2009
ScorecardSteve Rhodes declared himself “very much encouraged” as Worcestershire continued to have the best of their championship game against Nottinghamshire. Although fewer than 13 overs were possible on the second day, Worcestershire again belied the chasm between the sides in the Division One table by producing a performance that offered some hope of better times ahead.Though Gareth Andrew was stranded tantalisingly short of a maiden century, Worcestershire can be more than content with their first innings score on such a bowler-friendly wicket, while they also struck early to dismiss Scott Newman when Nottinghamshire began their reply. It was just the sort of performance that the director of cricket, Rhodes, requested when he spoke to the team before play.Rhodes was still reeling from a confrontation with angry supporters at a packed members’ forum the previous night. Asked to resign by a small number of supporters, Rhodes described the evening as “his worst experience as a coach” but promised not only not to resign, but to lead the club towards better times.”It took me by surprise,” Rhodes admitted. “I felt like it was biblical times and I was about to be stoned at any moment. It wasn’t a nice feeling. I told the players that the captain and I got a real grilling last night. But I told them they’d still see us bouncing around and that I wanted them to be the same.”This is usually a very friendly club that punches above its weight. But the expectation of some members is very high. We’re not it a big club like Surrey or Warwickshire; we’ll still win trophies, but we can’t expect to see ourselves as one of the big four”There is a divide between the big clubs and the rest and its getting bigger. Cricket is going the way of football where some counties are becoming like nursery clubs. That’s frustrating. The last thing we want to do is lose players, but if you can’t afford to keep them, what can you do? The answer is, we have to scout and develop young talent.”Rhodes has certainly been busy ‘scouting’ over recent days. Since the news of Steve Davies’ departure, he has been contacted by the representatives of 16 prospective first team wicket-keepers, with Surrey’s Jon Batty and Gloucestershire’s Steve Adshead thought to be among them.It will not just be a good keeper that Worcestershire require, however. They’ll need one capable of batting in the top six, too, as they can ill afford to add to their already long tail.Though Richard Jones helped Andrew to within sight of his century, Jones’ departure hastened a swift end to the innings. After Jones left one that crashed into his off stump, the hapless Arif was punished for flicking across the line and Jack Shantry’s maiden knock in first-class cricket ended when he lunged pad first at another straight one.Newman soon fell in reply. In two minds whether to play at one that bounced more than he expected outside off stump, he succeeded only in guiding a catch to the slip cordon. On such a pitch, a result is still possible despite the loss of much of the day to poor weather.Meanwhile Gareth Batty, the latest player to choose to leave Worcestershire, explained why he felt he needed to leave the club. The 31-year-old off-spinner, who represented England in limited-overs cricket as recently as March, is expected to announce that he will be joining his former team-mate, Steve Davies, at Surrey imminently.”I truly believe that the best years of my career should be ahead of me,” Batty said. “If they’re not, if things aren’t better in two or three years, then I’ll walk away from the game. I need to be able to look in the mirror at the end of my career and know that I’ve done the best I could; that I’ve got the best out of myself.”There have been times of late when I’ve woken up, looked in the mirror and thought ‘you’re kidding yourself here, mate.’ I’ve not really been living every moment; I’ve been meandering through things. There have been times when I’ve felt a spare part at Worcester. I felt a need to challenge myself more and test myself in conditions where I might be a match-winner. I’ve been working on a ‘doosra’ for a while and, sooner or later, I want to use it more.”Leaving is nothing to do with money. I’ve not thought about a benefit season or anything like that. Worcestershire will always be dear to my heart, but there are some aspects of the club I’ve found difficult to come to terms with and I decided, over the last year or so, that I needed a new start.”
