Moyes must unleash West Ham U23 gem vs Wien

West Ham United may have already qualified for the Europa League knockout stages but they still have two more matches to play out in Group H, with the top spot still on the line.

David Moyes’ men head to Austria to face Rapid Wien knowing that a victory would see them finish the group stages in first place but they will need to perform better than at the weekend, having lost 1-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

The Scot has often rotated his starting XI in this competition and tonight should be no different, though he is contending with injury problems, with Hammers stalwart Angelo Ogbonna ruled out for the remainder of the season.

His absence at the weekend saw Craig Dawson come into the starting XI, meaning he is unlikely to resume his European duties at the Allianz Stadion this evening, not that he should, anyway.

Instead, Moyes could make a bold call to start one of the Irons’ most promising defensive talents in Jamal Baptiste, perhaps alongside Issa Diop, who will be hungry for minutes and a chance to impress.

With Ogbonna facing serious time on the sidelines, this encounter presents a solid opportunity to see what the 18-year-old gem can do at a senior level. He’s already playing for the U23s despite his age, so that’s an encouraging sign indeed.

Baptiste has earned high praise from Hammers legend Carlton Cole during an appearance on the ‘Irons Inside’ podcast.

After describing him as a “massive prospect”, he added: “He’s going to be the next Anton Ferdinand hopefully or the next Rio, so hopefully we can these boys on the right track and help them transition into being a professional footballer full-time.”

Whilst former academy director Terry Westley described him as a “monster” who is “one of the finest young prospects at the club without any doubt” to Claret and Hugh.

“He’s got everything, height, power, pace and is already, at such a young age, making a serious impact on the under 23s,” he added.

The teenage sensation is certainly a player that is on the radar of Moyes’, too, having revealed his intention to include in first-team training back in August.

It’s time to see what he can do in the claret and blue, starting with the trip to Austria this evening. It could be huge for their season.

Out-of-form England face tough opener

There was no disguising the exhausted despondency with which Andrew Strauss addressed the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday, as England prepared to face the music against Sri Lanka

The Preview by Andrew Miller24-Sep-2009Match factsFriday, September 25, 2009
Start time 2:30 pm, 12:30 GMTAndrew Strauss’s team faces a tough initiation against Sri Lanka•AFP

Big pictureAndrew Strauss is usually as affable as international captains come, but despite his upbeat sentiments, there was no disguising the exhausted despondency with which he addressed the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday, as England prepared to face the music in a one-day competition that has humiliation stamped all over it. True, they arrive in the country boasting a winning streak of one match, after denying Australia a 7-0 whitewash in the final ODI of the English summer on Sunday, but even in that irrelevant face-saver, they still shipped six wickets chasing 177.And now, with respect to an Australian side that may be the reigning Champions Trophy champions but are still in an undeniable rebuilding phase, England prepare to face a team that really knows how to play one-day cricket. Sri Lanka simply hammered the much-fancied tournament hosts, South Africa, in the opening match on Tuesday. Tillakaratne Dilshan’s majestic hundred put the match out of reach, as the wiles of Ajantha Mendis proved too canny to allow a 300-plus target to be pursued with any confidence – even for a team stacked with the sort of power-players that England can only dream of.In the absence of Kevin Pietersen (who has scored two of England’s three ODI hundreds since January 2008 – a tally that even Scotland has surpassed) and latterly Andrew Flintoff and even Luke Wright, England lack batsmen who can break the shackles, and raise the tempo. Strauss has been batting like a dream all summer, but even at his most imperious, he is still a man for whom an 80.00 strike-rate is a pacey tempo – hence his unfortunate habit during the Australia ODIs of getting out when well set, usually while attempting a reverse-sweep or similar, shots that his colleagues ought to have been producing while he continued to anchor the innings.Strange results are possible in 50-over cricket – let’s not forget, when England were last humiliated by Australia in a one-day campaign, in Australia in 2006-07, they somehow emerged with the CB Series trophy in their luggage, after Paul Collingwood stitched together back-to-back victories in the finals. But they’ve never yet won an ICC global event, and they’ve rarely looked less ready to break that habit. The rarefied atmosphere of the Highveld is no place for weary cricketers.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)England – WLLLL
Sri Lanka – WLWWL
Team newsWith so many key players injured, and too many of the current incumbents out of form, it’s hard to know how England can hope to improve on their home form. Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah have been woefully short of confidence and one of that pair could well make way to enable England to field an extra seamer – which could well be their one trump card, having seen how dramatically South Africa’s early-season wickets have zipped around so far. Whether Tim Bresnan ousts Graham Onions depends on how much England value his extra batting abilities.England (possible): 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Joe Denly, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Matt Prior (wk), 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Stuart Broad, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James Anderson.Sri Lanka have very little to improve upon. Sanath Jayasuriya remains a concern at the top of the order, but he’ll play on until he drops, while the tireless Muttiah Muralitharan never ceases to be a menace. Lasith Malinga’s round-arm hostility will be a familiar but awkward challenge for Joe Denly, who will have gained a valuable sighter of his unorthodox action in the Kent nets.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Muttiah Muralitharan, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Watch out for…An ICC event in South Africa was where James Anderson made his name way back in 2003, when he was the rising star of England’s attack, not least during a monumental performance against Pakistan in Cape Town when, in the immortal words of Cricinfo’s erstwhile scribe, Rob Smyth, he proved “so good under the lights, he ought to have been a moth”. If he can replicate the hostility that he showed in patches during the Ashes, and exploit the moist conditions that tend to prevail when the evening dew kicks in, he can cause a flap once again. Assuming England’s batsmen give him a total to defend, that is.With 71 wickets in 34 ODIs since his debut in April 2008, Ajantha Mendis has been one of the bowling sensations of the past 18 months, but England as yet have been denied an opportunity to sample his unique bag of tricks. A three-wicket haul in the opening game against South Africa confirmed that his carrom ball is flicking out nicely, and it remains to be seen how England manage to counter his wiles. Traditionally they’ve not been too impressive when it comes to figuring out mystery spinners …Pitch and conditions It’s early in the season on the Highveld, so who knows what to expect? So far, there has been evidence of helpful bowling conditions, unsurprisingly, and there has been plenty of rain in the high-altitude air as well.Stats and trivia Jayasuriya has scored 28 ODI hundreds in 439 matches spanning 18 years. The 11 players who took the field for England in the seventh ODI at Chester-le-Street have a grand total of nine hundreds between them. Paul Collingwood, the most-capped player by a distance, has notched up 166 appearances. Sri Lanka have won only one of the four ODIs they have played at the Wanderers, and that was to avoid a 6-0 whitewash in 2000-01. Their last visit, during the 2003 World Cup, culminated in a 183-run drubbing at the hands of the eventual runners-up, India England have played three matches at the venue, all against South Africa, and at the third attempt they recorded their first win, by 26 runs in a rain-affected contest in 2005, notable for Kevin Pietersen’s hostile homecoming.Quotes”It’s not a long tournament, a bit of a sprint and quite exciting to know if you play well in three games you’re in the semi-final. We can wipe the slate clean to be honest.”
.”As a side, I feel we are still firing at 75% maybe. So we have a lot of areas to improve, but the good thing is that we’re still winning.”

Eu saio feliz com a apresentação do meu time – analisou Abel Braga.

Tivemos as duas melhores oportunidades.

Davis disappoints despite Rangers’ win

Giovanni van Bronckhorst continued his 100% record as Glasgow Rangers manager on Wednesday evening, as Gers defeated Hibernian 1-0 at Easter Road.

However, the Light Blues did not have things all their own way against Jack Ross’ side, with Hibs looking very good value for a draw until the 85th minute of the match, when Kemar Roofe slotted home from the spot to seal an important three points for the Dutchman.

Despite the win – which saw Rangers extend their lead at the top of the Premiership table to seven points – there were nevertheless a couple of underwhelming performances turned in by Gers players on the night, none more so than from central midfielder Steven Davis, who was ineffective in the middle of the park.

Lost possession 14x

After being left out of Rangers’ last two Premiership fixtures, Davis did very little over his 66 minutes on the pitch against Hibs to convince van Bronckhorst he is worthy of retaining his starting spot in the middle of the park going forwards.

Indeed, the £900k-rated man failed to make a single tackle or interception, won just one of his three duels, failed with his one attempted cross and one attempted long ball, completed a mere 33 of his 43 attempted passes – a completion rate of 77% – and lost possession for his side on 14 separate occasions.

These metrics not only saw the £20k-per-week midfielder brought off midway through the second half, but they also saw him earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.5, with no other Rangers player who started the clash receiving a lower rating than the Northern Ireland international.

As such, with a hectic Christmas period coming up for Gers, one which could ultimately end up deciding the Premiership title race, Davis will undoubtedly have to up his game in the coming weeks if van Bronckhorst is to go on and secure the club’s second successive league title come the end of the season, as the midfielder failed the 46-year-old on Wednesday.

Vusi Sibanda takes the plaudits after steering Zimbabwe to victory over Kenya•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Vusi Sibanda completed a monumental performance against Kenya with a match-winning 116 to go alongside his first-innings 209. After opening first time around he dropped down to No. 4 in the run chase and guide the Zimbabwe XI home by five wickets after a shaky start.Kenya sniffed an opportunity after reducing Zimbabwe to 24 for 2 in the sixth over with the early wickets of new opening pair Friday Kasteni and Shingirai Masakadza. However, Sibanda strode in to once again provide the backbone for the home side. The match was virtually decided by the third wicket stand of 166 that he and Chamu Chibhabha (64) added in 42 overs. There was a mini wobble when Chibhabha was leg before to Hiren Varaiya as three wickets fell for 23, but while Sibanda was at the crease Zimbabwe were in control.Sibanda closed down the chase alongside Forster Mutizwa as Zimbabwe claimed their first victory of the campaign and a full hand of 20 points. Kenya, meanwhile, had nothing to show for their efforts having also conceded a first-innings lead but remain second the table, six points behind Scotland.

Craig Kieswetter, the Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman, has reiterated his commitment to play for England after Graeme Smith said he wanted to bring him back to his native South Africa.”It is very flattering to hear someone of Graeme Smith’s stature speak so highly of me, but I remain committed to playing international cricket for England and that remains my ambition,” Kieswetter said.Brian Rose, Somerset’s director of cricket, added: “He’s a very exciting prospect and everyone at Somerset, from the players to the members and the supporters, will be delighted he remains committed to helping Somerset achieve further success and hopefully go on to play for England.”Kieswetter, the son of an Afrikaner father and Scottish mother, was recently fast-tracked into the England performance squad. He was chosen as a Grade B player and identified as between one and three years away from the top level. His form for Somerset in the English season has prompted comparisons with Kevin Pietersen but Kieswetter has said he would have a better idea of where he stood in the England pecking order once he qualified in February.”Yes, I would like to have him back. It’s up to him but he is certainly someone we’d like back,” said Smith. “In the domestic game we have started to get a lot of players back and it’s only strengthening our system. We want it to be the ultimate to play for South Africa.”It is up to him [Kieswetter]. The challenge is to get him back into our franchise system first, but he is certainly someone we have seen and would like to get back into the system.”The issue of South Africans playing in England as Kolpaks has long been a thorny issue and the returning home of several South Africans, having honed their game in county cricket, has only added to the debate. “It’s surprising at times, I have to admit, when players who’ve played in England for a long time come back to play for South Africa,” said Paul Collingwood, England’s one-day captain. Two such players are Ryan McLaren and Charl Langeveldt, who renounced their Kolpak status to play for South Africa. Smith has welcomed their decision, one that Geoff Miller, the England national selector, believed to be due to South Africa’s success as a team and the advent of lucrative Twenty20 leagues. “For Ryan and the others to play in England and face different challenges . . . it is almost like an academy,” he said. “Players who go there grow and come back into our system as hopefully better players. It is only strengthening our system.”
