Bayern Munich have not yet expressed an interest in signing Leeds United winger Raphinha in the January transfer window, according to journalist Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Bayern linked with Raphinha move

The Whites received a potential blow earlier in the week, with the Brazilian strongly linked with a January switch to Bayern after the European giants saw him as a strong option to sign.

Raphinha has surely been Leeds’ best player so far this season, scoring eight goals in 16 Premier League appearances, so the thought of losing him midway through the campaign is a worrying one.

Fortunately, a more positive update has now emerged regarding the 25-year-old’s future.

The Latest: Smyth provides encouraging update

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Smyth, the rumour of an imminent move to Germany is wide of the mark, with Bayern ‘yet to make any interest known’ to Leeds regarding a potential transfer for the Brazilian.

It is stated that the Whites may need to sell players in January to generate funds for new signings, but it is also mentioned that selling Raphinha would ‘make next to no sense’.

The Verdict: Can’t afford to lose him

With key figures such as Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford both plagued by injury this season, Raphinha’s importance to Marcelo Bielsa’s side is going to be greater than ever throughout the rest of the campaign.

Leeds are threatening to become embroiled in a relegation fight in the Premier League, so allowing arguably their best player to leave would be asking for trouble.

It could be that Raphinha demands to move on at the end of the season, but for now, it makes complete sense for the Whites to ignore any other club’s advances and try to persuade the 25-year-old to commit to the Leeds cause for another few months at least, especially when they badly need him.

وردًا على سؤال حول الانتقادات الموجهة إلى ساوثجيت، قال ستيرلينج: “نعلم جميعًا أن هذا هو ما يأتي مع كرة القدم واللعب على أعلى مستوى”.

وأضاف: “أنت تحت الفحص والكثير منه غير عادل بالطبع، لكن هذا هو المستوى الذي نحن عليه مع إنجلترا، نحن نتعرض دائمًا لهذا الضغط للفوز، وهذه الخسارة الصغيرة في المستوى ليست شيئًا نحتاج إلى الذعر بشأنه”.

وواصل في تصريحاته التي نشرتها شبكة “سكاي سبورتس” العالمية: “لدينا الآن فرصة كبيرة قادمة في الشتاء للخروج وإظهار ما يمكننا القيام به مرة أخرى”.

وأردف: “بالنسبة لما فعله ساوثجيت منذ توليه المنصب، فقد قادنا إلى نصف نهائي ونهائي، وهذا يوضح الاتجاه الذي نسير فيه، نحن نعلم أننا لسنا بالمستوى الذي يمكن أن نكون عليه الآن، لكن ما زلت أعتقد أن لدينا إيجابيات يجب النظر إليها”.

واستكمل: “منذ قدوم المدرب، كان يحاول دائمًا حمايتنا، لقد حاول دائمًا جعل البيئة هادئة حقًا بالنسبة لنا حتى نتمكن من الخروج والقيام بما نحتاج إليه في ملعب كرة القدم”.

وأوضح: “بعد الصيف كان علينا جميعًا أن نذهب بعيدًا وننظر إلى أنفسنا، لم يكن أحد منا فخورًا بهذه العروض، ولا أعتقد أنه من واجب جاريث أن يتحمل كل هذا اللوم”.

Robin Uthappa, who had led Karnataka’s reply with a fine 91, drove a harmless delivery back to the bowler Rahul Sharma and Rahul Dravid got a fatal inside-edge on an attempted cut and at 170 for 4, things looked slightly wobbly for Karnataka.However, Pandey cushioned the blows with his assured strokeplay to leave the game interestingly poised on the second day. A small lead might not turn out to be a matter of life and death in the end as there might be still be an outright result possible in this game but tomorrow’s morning should see an interesting tussle.It was fascinating to see how Pandey responded to the fall of wickets. When Dravid fell, he counterattacked with three fours from four balls – a late cut, an on-drive and a swing over midwicket – against legspinner Sharma, and when C Gautam fell with Karnataka sliding to 217 for 6, he again dealt in a flurry of boundaries. He lifted Manpreet Gony and Taruwar Kohli to the midwicket boundary before collecting two more boundaries with cover and straight drives against Kohli.It wasn’t all dashing bravado though, as Pandey punctuated his aggression with compact defensive nudges and pushes. His occasional tendency to go for the runs like his Royal Challengers Bangalore team-mate Kevin Pietersen seemed to really tease the dressing room nerves as he ran after pushing straight to fielders. Towards the end of the day, he quietened down in the company of Sunil Joshi in an unbroken 48-run stand as Karnataka steadily moved towards securing a lead.Until Pandey turned on his show, and just before Punjab tried to force their way with a quick flurry of wickets, it was all Uthappa. It wasn’t the usual flair of Uthappa that impressed today, but he showed a calm demeanor during the responsible innings, till he was done in by exuberance.He hasn’t had a great season so far, but he started well today – looking to play in the V and concentrated on getting his timing right. He was beaten a few times on the forward defensive stroke but unfurled a few pretty off drives, a flamboyant cover drive on a bent knee against Love Ablish and a couple of dashing punchy cuts. He brought up his fifty with a neat straight on-the-up drive against Harmeet Singh before suddenly exploding against the spin of Sharma. He slog swept the legspinner for a six and a four and lifted him to the long-off boundary when he suddenly hit a flighted delivery straight back to the bowler.Dravid, who had looked as steady as ever during his knock of 36, followed Uthappa soon after when he dragged a short-of-length delivery from Ablish back to the stumps and it was this point that Punjab had their best moments with the ball. Gony removed Amit Verma with a delivery in the corridor and Kohli picked his maiden first-class wicket when he induced Gautam to edge an intended off drive and things looked promising for the visitors but Pandey thwarted them with a defiant knock.

The Brazilian has arguably been the Whites’ standout player so far this season, scoring eight goals in 17 Premier League appearances and posting by far the highest WhoScored performance rating in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Unsurprisingly, constant reports have linked Raphinha with an eventual move away from Elland Road, with the likes of Liverpool tipped to sign him, even though the 25-year-old’s current Leeds deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024.

The Latest: Journalist provides Raphinha transfer update

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke gave an important update on the situation, hinting that a summer exit is on the cards rather than a January move. He outlined:

“I don’t think the player is leaving Leeds just yet. But in the summertime, if Leeds don’t have the best season and are in the bottom end of the table for most of the season, Raphinha will be thinking that he wants to play at a higher level.”

The Verdict: Summer exit on the cards?

The idea of Raphinha leaving Leeds this month is simply unthinkable, especially with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford currently sidelined and the Whites looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone.

It would be a huge shock if the Brazil international suddenly departed in the coming weeks, but in truth, it is not difficult to envisage him moving on in the summer.

At that point, Raphinha may feel he has come as far as he can with the Whites, especially if Champions League-playing clubs show genuine interest in him. It would be hard to begrudge him that move either, given how much he has contributed at Elland Road already.

Newcastle United want to sign both Sven Botman and Diego Carlos during the January transfer window, according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh. 

The lowdown

Waugh’s colleague David Ornstein has written that Newcastle have as much as £100m available to spend this month, and they’ve only used £12m of that so far to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

A double swoop for Lille’s Botman and Sevilla’s Carlos could end up consuming the vast majority of that budget, though, with The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones claiming that the duo could cost up to £70m.

In The Athletic’s matchday discussion on Saturday, a supporter asked Waugh if it was ‘likely to be one or the other’ of Botman or Carlos to be signed.

The journalist replied: “The plan seems to be both, Ben – which surprised me. I thought it would be one of the other, but they’d ideally like two signings.”

The verdict

How surprising is it that Newcastle are willing to plough so much money into their defence? Not very.

As per Understat, they have the joint-worst record in the Premier League in terms of goals conceded and the outright worst in terms of expected goals against. They are currently on course to concede a whopping 84, which would be only five short of the all-time record for a 20-team season in the league’s 30-year history.

The hope would be that Botman, who has been eyed by ‘an array of top clubs’, and Carlos, himself a former target of Liverpool and Manchester United, could turn a porous backline into a solid foundation. Waugh’s comments suggest that the Magpies mean business in trying to get at least one of them to Tyneside by the end of the month
