James Smith and Michael Klinger helped deliver first-innings points for South Australia but the Redbacks will be hoping to push on for an outright win with two days to play. Queensland and Victoria are well clear at the top of the Sheffield Shield table, which should encourage both the Redbacks and Western Australia to aim for a result. The first part of the points allocation was settled when Aaron O’Brien and Daniel Christian, the sixth-wicket pair, guided South Australia past the Warriors’ 284 late on the second day. At the close, the Redbacks had 5 for 309 and their advantage had grown to 25 runs with O’Brien unbeaten on 46 and Christian on 27.South Australia began the day at 1 for 19 but any thoughts from the Warriors of running through the visitors vanished thanks to a 151-run stand from Smith and Klinger. Brad Knowles eventually removed both men; Klinger played on for 74 from 189 balls and Smith was caught at mid-on for an equally patient 78.But Western Australia couldn’t get the run of wickets that they needed and handy contributions from Cameron Borgas (39) and Tom Cooper (26) helped them edge closer to the lead. The home team’s two key fast men, Steve Magoffin and Ashley Noffke, went wicketless while Knowles and Michael Hogan grabbed two each.

Tim Spiers relays Wolves transfer claim

In the early days of the 2022 January transfer window, Wolves have recalled Dion Sanderson and Ryan Giles from their loan deals, as well as securing a deal for midfielder Hayao Kawabe.

However, despite there still being a considerable amount of time left in the window, it appears that Wolves fans shouldn’t be holding their breath for many more incoming signings this month.

What’s the news?

In a recent article by Tim Spiers for The Athletic, comments from the club’s technical director Scott Sellars were shared about what their plans will be for the current transfer window which may not please a lot of fans at Molineux.

Sellars said: “It’s hard to predict what happens in any transfer window, but it’s certain that we won’t bring in a large number of new signings, and firstly we will focus on providing Bruno Lage with immediate back up at a time when all clubs are suffering with injuries and [virus] issues, and at the same time give opportunities to our young players who have been doing so well out on loan.

“We’d rather use the young players out on loan, and wait for our injured players to come back, than spend money on players who aren’t going to improve the squad we already have.

“If there’s someone who is going to enhance the squad and team, then of course we will explore the option and see if we can make it work.”

Fans may be furious

Taking this into account, it seems as though Sellars is trying to cover all aspects of what business Wolves could look to do in terms of transfer deals this month without trying to raise expectations or excitement among the fan base, but supporters may still be left furious over the prospect of a quiet month on the market.

Eighth in the Premier League table with 28 points on the board from 19 games, it has been a solid campaign so far for the Old Gold, especially with just 14 goals conceded in that time – only runaway leaders Manchester City have a better defensive record.

However, on the flip side, Wolves have only managed to score 13 league goals so far this season, fewer than the likes of Burnley, Newcastle United and Watford, who comprise three of the bottom four in the top flight.

With this in mind, if Wolves are to make any other new signings this month, it would be worth bringing in a player who could inject a bit of life to the attack, find the net on a regular basis and, as Sellars put it, “enhance the squad”.

Central Districts, Canterbury post wins

Cricinfo staff15-Mar-2010A solid second-innings batting performance helped Central Districts win their Plunket Shield match against Wellington by seven wickets in Napier, despite conceding a slender first-innings lead.Central asked Wellington to bat in what turned out to be a match with middling scores. Cameron Merchant and Luke Woodcock scored half-centuries in Wellington’s first innings but the lack of substantial scores from anyone else resulted in them being dismissed for 250. Doug Bracewell caused most of the damage, taking 5 for 47, and he was well supported by Adam Milne, who picked up 4 for 49. Central’s reply was weak: seven batsmen got past 20 but Brendon Diamanti’s 40 was the top score. Fast bowler Ili Tugaga took career-best figures of 5 for 77 to dismiss them for 232.Bracewell and Milne once again cut through the Wellington top order in the second innings and soon had in trouble at 26 for 3. Neal Parlene resisted with 90 but Wellington slipped to 207 all out. Bracewell, who finished the match with 9 for 109, and Milne, with seven wickets, had ensured their team had only 226 to chase for victory.Faced with a gettable target, Central’s top order delivered. The top three batsmen – Peter Ingram, Jamie How and Brad Patton – scored half-centuries and No. 4 Timothy Weston scored an unbeaten 41 to lead Central to 228 for 3 in only the 49th over. The victory kept Central Districts in second place in the league, behind Northern Districts.Canterbury edged ahead of Otago in the points table and took third place with a 158-run win in Queenstown. Their top order delivered a solid performance in the first innings – Michael Papps’ 83 and Dean Brownlie’s 63 were the highlights – and they were comfortably placed at 248 for 4 when the middle and lower order folded cheaply. They were dismissed for only 315 as a result.Canterbury’s bowlers rose to the challenge. Their new-ball operators, Hamish Bennett and Chris Martin, took three wickets each and Otago lost wickets steadily to be dismissed for 221. Derek de Boorder top scored 55 as they gave up a first-innings lead of 94. Canterbury’s batsmen performed once again in the second innings, with Papps leading the way with a century. He scored 122 and Johann Myburgh made 90, which allowed Canterbury to declare on 340 for 5, setting Otago a target of 435.Otago’s batsmen fared better in the chase. Opener Craig Cumming made 82 but a top-order hiccup resulted in a slide from 85 for 1 to 132 for 5. Sam Wells made a half-century in the middle order but became one of legspinner Todd Astle’s five wickets. Otago were eventually bowled out for 272 in the 93rd over of their innings.

Rangers plotting three January signings

An update has emerged from Ibrox on Rangers’ transfer plans for the rest of the January transfer window under Gio van Bronckhorst.

What’s the talk?

According to Herald Scotland, the Gers are expected to remain active throughout the rest of the month following the signing of James Sands from New York City FC.

The report claims that van Bronckhorst wants to add a right-back to his squad to replace Nathan Patterson, whilst also completing pre-contract deals for both John Souttar and Danilho Doekhi of Hearts and Vitesse Arnhem respectively.

Excitement for Rangers fans

This update will surely leave the fans at Ibrox excited, as it suggests that there is plenty more to happen between now and the window slamming shut at the end of the month.

It means that supporters can remain glued to their phones or laptops following the latest rumours and pondering who may or may not be playing for the Scottish giants in the second half of the campaign. Transfer season is an exciting time of year for fans, as they speculate whether certain players will or won’t be a good signing, which they may currently be doing with Sands following his arrival.

They could also be excited at the prospect of both Doekhi and Souttar agreeing deals to join the club this month. The pair are out of contract at the end of the season and this latest update claims that the Gers want to obtain both of them rather than just one. This means that the club could enhance their squad with two strong additions for a combined transfer fee of £0 ahead of the summer.

With Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun’s contracts expiring in July, these prospective deals could be particularly important for the Gers. Sealing transfers for both targets now would alleviate any pressure to replace the aforementioned Rangers duo ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, and also give Doekhi and Souttar ample time to prepare for playing under Van Bronckhorst in the Premiership.

Supporters will also be buzzing that the club are prepared to sign a direct replacement for Patterson. Sands is capable of playing at right-back and he could have been used as a utility option to slot in for James Tavernier when required, but Van Bronckhorst is seemingly keen on a natural player to fill that role, and fans will surely love that the manager wants that instead of fielding players out of position.

AND in other news, Time’s up: Van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe £900k-rated Rangers dud, he’s a “weak link”…
