Rangers’ 3 worst players v Celtic

Glasgow Rangers endured an embarrassing 3-0 away defeat at the hands of their city rivals in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

Two well-taken goals from Reo Hatate, as well as a sucker blow from Liel Abada, were more than enough to give the hosts all three points at Parkhead, with all three strikes coming in the first half.

There were some truly awful performances from Rangers on the night, and The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers were for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side:

Joe Aribo (6.4)

Coming back from Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) duty with Nigeria, Aribo was given a mere 6.4 overall rating.

The midfielder lost out on five of his duels and also failed to record a single shot on goal, clearance, interception, key pass, cross or long ball in the match.

The 25-year-old was also guilty of giving possession away 12 times, the joint-sixth most out of his teammates.

Connor Goldson (6.4)

Goldson was also given a 6.4 rating, but ranks second here as he was part of a shambolic defence which conceded three goals in 45 minutes against their biggest rivals.

The defender lost three duels and did not record an interception, while he lost the ball on no fewer than on 17 separate occasions in total, the joint-second most out of any Gers player.

Amad Diallo (6.1)

Diallo was ranked as the Gers’ worst player on the night, with a 6.1 rating given.

The Manchester United loanee struggled to make any sort of real impact on the game as he never attempted a shot on goal, successful dribble, key pass or cross, while he also lost five of his duels and gave away the ball 12 times.

Van Bronckhorst decided to haul him off at half-time, in what was an unimpressive first Old Firm derby for the Ivorian youngster.

Rudi Koertzen, the South African umpire, has announced his retirement from officiating in international cricket: his last Test will be the Pakistan-Australia fixture at Headingley from July 21 to 25. The ICC have added Marais Erasmus, from South Africa, and Rodney Tucker, from Australia, to the Elite Panel of Umpires for 2010-11 to replace Koertzen and Mark Benson, who stepped down from the panel in February.Koertzen, 61, has officiated in 106 Tests, a record 209 ODIs and 14 Twenty20 internationals. His first international match was the ODI between between South Africa and India in Port Elizabeth on December 9, 1992 and he made his Test debut at the same venue three weeks later.”A distinguished career like Rudi’s presents a benchmark for aspirant umpires,” ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said. “Rudi is a role model for many of the younger-generation umpires and his distinguished career sets a standard for them to emulate.”He is one of the most respected umpires in the game and has always been confident and self motivated yet humble. It is why he has been comfortably able to embrace the core values of the traditional game with the technological advances in recent times.”Koertzen is currently in Zimbabwe, where he is officiating in the tri-series involving the hosts, India and Sri Lanka. “It has been 18 incredible years for me as an international umpire and I have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it,” he said, reflecting on his career. “I feel humbled to have been trusted with this massive responsibility and awarded this great opportunity to see cricket revolutionise, be actively involved in some of the biggest changes, see some of the iconic players of the modern era and be part of some of the most fascinating matches.”One of the new members of the elitle panel, Tucker, is from New South Wales and Cricket Australia congratulated him on his promotion. “Rod’s rise through the ranks has been meteoric but extremely well-deserved. As the first umpire to progress from CA’s Project Panel to the highest level, his is a great story for Australian cricket,” CA chief James Sutherland said.”Australian umpires now comprise one third of the ICC’s Elite Panel which is a significant achievement and recognition of the quality of our development pathway. CA is enthusiastic about identifying former players to remain in the game post-retirement and we expect Rod will serve as motivation for others to follow a similar path.”The umpires in the Elite Panel for 2010-11 are Billy Bowden, Aleem Dar, Steve Davis, Asoka de Silva, Billy Doctrove, Marais Erasmus, Ian Gould, Daryl Harper, Tony Hill, Asad Rauf, Simon Taufel, Rodney Tucker.

Malcolm Speed slams move to block Howard

Malcolm Speed, the former chief executive of the ICC, believes it is “outrageous” that Zimbabwe and South Africa are pushing to block John Howard’s nomination as the ICC’s president-designate

Malcolm Speed, the former chief executive of the ICC, believes it is “outrageous” that Zimbabwe and South Africa are pushing to block John Howard’s nomination as the ICC’s president-designate. However, Speed is confident that Howard will gain the support of India and have his nomination confirmed.”There is some irony in this,” Speed told the . “Zimbabwe throughout has said ‘you must come and play against us for the sake of our cricket. You can’t have politics in cricket, you can’t make political considerations’, and the ICC has consistently endorsed that position.”Their position now, as I understand it, is that Howard’s not qualified because he’s a politician and he’s criticised Zimbabwe, so they bring politics back into it when it suits them. I think the behaviour of Zimbabwe, and South Africa supporting them, has been outrageous.”They agreed to the process. They knew it was to be Australia and New Zealand’s decision and they should have been prepared to accept that position and not second-guess those countries. The process should have been followed.”Speed also described as “a nonsense” the suggestion that Howard, a former prime minister of Australia, was not qualified because he was not a member of the Cricket Australia board. That was the criteria raised by Sri Lanka to justify their possible opposition to Howard, but Speed said there was a precedent.”[Ehsan] Mani wasn’t a member of the Pakistan board,” Speed said of the ICC president elected in 2003. “In fact he lived in England, but he was their nominee and he was a very good president.”Howard’s nomination will be formally discussed at the ICC’s annual meeting in Singapore later this month.

Agora sim!

Newcastle transfer news on Lingard

A Newcastle United journalist has claimed that Jesse Lingard could reunite with his old teammate Dan Burn at St. James’ Park before the deadline.

The Lowdown: Busy, busy

The St. James’ Park faithful are set to announce the signing of Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion on Transfer Deadline Day, and he will follow Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes through the door in the North East.

They are also reportedly working on deals for both Hugo Ekitike and Matt Targett, and their business may not be done there.

The Latest: Lingard to follow

As per Newcastle World journalist Jordan Cronin, Lingard has apparently talked to Burn over his potential move to Tyneside, and he could link up again with his former teammate at the Magpies, with a move not being ruled out today:

“Jesse Lingard has apparently spoken to Dan Burn about the defender’s potential move to #NUFC.

“The pair played at Birmingham together. Just maybe they might link up again on Tyneside.

“Still lots of work to do on both deals, Burn obviously a lot more likely than Lingard.”

The Verdict: Dream

If the Toon can get a deal over the line for Lingard, as well as Burn, Ekitike and Targett, then it would be nothing short of a dream ending to the window.

With nine goals and supplying a further five assists for West Ham United last season, the 29-year-old’s last loan spell away from Old Trafford was good enough to draw comparisons to Diego Maradona (talkSPORT), and NUFC can hopefully expect a similar sort of impact for them.

Nonetheless, with just six months left remaining on his current contract, another loan would really suit Newcastle, as if he does perform well, they could potentially get him for free at the end of the season.

Scotland’s batsmen tuned up for the ICC World Cricket League with a strong performance which set up a comfortable victory over Afghanistan. After being put in, Scotland’s openers set the pattern with a 56-run stand, which was followed by three more healthy partnerships. Each of the top five got starts, with No. 4 Richie Berrington top-scoring with 69. Though left-arm medium-pacer Khaliq Dad struck thrice late in the innings, Scotland finished with a hefty 283. Afghanistan’s chase was hampered by a steady loss of wickets, but they battled on to 145 for 4 with the help of captain Nawroz Mangal’s half-century. A couple of quick strikes, though, ended their chances and they hobbled their way to 218 all out.
Scorecard
Ireland showcased their dominance of the second tier of international cricket when a century from Paul Stirling helped them overhaul a stiff target against Canada with four overs to spare. Canada’s captain Ashish Bagai (84) and No. 3 Zubin Surkari (62) were involved in a 99-run third-wicket stand that was the centerpiece of their side’s batting. A late flourish from Sunil Dhaniram, who slammed three sixes and three fours, took them to a solid 259. Ireland’s chase stuttered early when opener Nigel Jones went cheaply but Stirling stitched together a couple of big partnerships for the next two wickets to shepherd them towards victory.
Scorecard
Kenya put aside the turmoil that has stalked their cricket over the past couple of weeks to post a five-wicket win over Netherlands in their warm-up match in Schiedam. Collins Obuya was their star performer, making a century after the top three perished for ducks during Kenya’s pursuit of 219. From 5 for 3 in the fourth over, Obuya and Alex Obanda revived Kenya with a patient partnership of 116 runs. Francis Otieno then assisted Obuya, the pair adding 88 to take Kenya to the brink of a win. Netherlands had earlier had a poor start as well, but recovered from 13 for 2 to reach a respectable 218. Their top-scorer was Peter Borren, who missed a century by four runs, while Bradley Kruger chipped in with a watchful 37 off 79 deliveries.

Leeds post Junior Firpo footage

Leeds United have posted footage on their Instagram page of Junior Firpo running at Elland Road weeks after he picked up a hamstring injury against West Ham.

The Lowdown: Firpo’s on and off campaign

Firpo, previously labelled as ‘incredibly fit’ by Kevin Campbell, has endured a frustrating first season at Elland Road.

The left-back has missed seven Premier League games this season and has completed 90 minutes in the top flight on just six occasions.

The Spaniard went off against West Ham with what appeared to be a hamstring issue and missed the defeat to Newcastle prior to the break, but it seems as if he could be involved against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The Latest: Whites footage

Leeds provided a number of positive injury updates in the week, sharing images of Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell all smiles at Thorp Arch.

They shared a video of Firpo running at Elland Road on Instagram on Friday, which can be viewed here.

The Verdict: Good news

Although it isn’t a sprint, it’s good to see that Firpo is able to move freely following his latest muscle issue.

That could mean he has a chance of making the matchday squad against Villa in the week, with journalist Beren Cross expecting Firpo and Adam Forshaw to be available for Marcelo Bielsa.

That would give the Leeds boss options in both defence and midfield, which could prove key in what looks set to be a crucial month as the Whites look to pull away from the relegation zone.
