Romano: Man United dealt De Jong blow

A transfer claim regarding Manchester United’s chances of signing Frenkie de Jong this summer has emerged…

What’s the word?

Super-journalist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on United’s pursuit of the former Ajax starlet, ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Romano took to his Twitter page to relay the claim which read: “Barca manager Xavi shuts down rumours on Frenkie de Jong leaving & Man Utd links.”

The Italian’s tweet contained quotes from Xavi on the potential departure of de Jong, with the Barcelona manager saying this: “Frenkie’s a very important player for me and for the club. He has to mark an era.

“I’m happy with him. If it were up to me he’ll continue for many years at Barca.”

Ten Hag will be gutted

With Ten Hag’s recent appointment at Manchester United amidst fluctuating game-time for Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona, it looked like this reunion was written in the stars for the Old Trafford side.

Since departing Ten Hag’s Ajax back in the summer of 2019, the Netherlands star has continued his development across his total of 136 appearances for the Blaugrana.

With Paul Pogba’s rumoured departure, a move for the 24-year-old looked like a sure-fire switch, with the Dutch coach enjoying unlimited success with de Jong – winning the Eredivisie title and Dutch Cup – in a season that saw Ajax reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

The signing of the midfield maestro would have been the epitome of the next chapter for United, with the £63m-rated midfielder offering something completely different in the Red Devils’ engine room.

De Jong is quite simply a pass master, averaging an insane 90% pass completion total per 90, with an average total of 56 passes per match.

The Netherlands international is forward-thinking. His passing is productive and allows his side to progress the ball forward, whilst also creating a number of chances for his teammates – with his shot-creating actions total of three per 90 reflecting this.

Though, his style is much more offensive than defensive, with his metrics for the latter looking poor, considering his position.

As such, United may have had a lucky escape, as it is no secret that the lack of defensive solidity across the midfield has been one of the biggest issues for the side this season.

United need to identify a well-rounded and unselfish central midfielder who can cover both aspects of the game, as well as an outright central defensive midfielder who sits back and acts as the metronome.

It would have been nice to see de Jong reunite with Ten Hag, and although he may not be what the Red Devils need, it will be a big blow to the new boss nonetheless.

O Verdão conseguiu segurá o ímpeto do Coelho no segundo tempo.

Ntini was a 'great servant' – McMillan

Brian McMillan, the former South Africa allrounder, has hailed his ex team-mate Makhaya Ntini as a “great servant to the game” after the fast bowler announced his international retirement.

Brian McMillan, the former South Africa allrounder, has hailed his ex team-mate Makhaya Ntini as a “great servant to the game” after the fast bowler announced his international retirement. McMillan was Ntini’s mentor during the 1998 tour to England when Ntini was playing in just his third series, and the two formed a strong bond. For McMillan it was Ntini’s fitness levels that stood out, a trait the fast bowler said he modelled on McMillan. Ntini became well known as the work horse of the South African attack, which he credited the allrounder for teaching him. “He had a lot of dedication which not all the guys have now,” McMillan told ESPNcricinfo. “Whenever you would throw him the ball, he would bowl. In some ways he was a lot like Shaun Pollock, in that he got through a lot of overs.”The connection between the two started from an early stage. “He was still very much a junior and one of the first development players in our side,” McMillan said. “He used to babysit my son Joshua on the sidelines, and Joshua is 17 now. It is things like that which make Makhaya not just special to me but also to my family.”However, there is still one bone of contention as far as McMillan is concerned. “There’s one thing I will have to talk to him about. He promised me he would invite me to his wedding and he didn’t,” he joked.McMillan believed that Ntini had made his own decision about quitting the international game and that it was not for him or anyone else to judge whether he had retired at the right time. “He must’ve known it was time.”Meanwhile, the current Test and one-day captain, Graeme Smith, gave his own tribute to Ntini after the third one-day international against Pakistan in Dubai which Smith missed due to injury. “Makhaya epitomised what the Proteas stood for and has been a great servant to the game both on and off the field,” said Smith. “I am most grateful to have been part of his career and successes and wish him all of the best with his life after international cricket.””He brought so much energy and laughter to the team, not forgetting that he is one of the fittest players I know, and as a captain it was always a pleasure to be able to call on him. I am so proud of his achievements, his records speak for themselves, and he leaves behind a lasting legacy for many to aspire to.”He has been a pioneer for youngsters out there and has represented every South African while he has donned the Protea jersey.”

Steyn hopes for lively pitches against India

Dale Steyn has said that the preparation of result-oriented pitches will be the key to South Africa maintaining their supremacy against India at home during the upcoming Test series

Firdose Moonda07-Dec-2010

One of the major battles during India’s tour to South Africa will be the visiting batsmen against Dale Steyn•AFP

Dale Steyn has said the preparation of result-oriented pitches will be the key to South Africa maintaining their supremacy against India at home during the upcoming Test series. South Africa begin their home summer against India at Centurion on December 16, their first assignment after a drawn series against Pakistan in the UAE.”It will be really sad if we have similar wickets to the ones we had when we played Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates,” Steyn told ESPNcricinfo. “This is a big series between two good sides and we need results to keep people interested.”The battle between the No. 1 and 2 ranked Test sides is expected to be influenced by the conditions in South Africa, with the visitors warned to anticipate bounce and pace from the pitches. Steyn saw the playing field as more level with India’s batsmen, whose traditional weakness on tour has been the short ball, becoming more experienced in dealing with lively surfaces.”Everybody has played enough around the world now for no conditions to be totally unknown,” he said. “The Indian batsmen have proven themselves over the years and the pitches will be a test for both of us: our bowlers against their batters and their bowlers against our batters.”That’s not to say Steyn doesn’t think South Africa hold a slight edge. “I still think that our bowlers tend to bowl better in these conditions. And it’s the same with our batsmen. They are more used to these conditions.” India already know that and are preparing for the barrage of bouncers that will be hurled their way at a week-long training camp at Gary Kirsten’s academy in Cape Town. The memory of Steyn’s career-best match haul of 10-108, which included 7-51 in the first innings on a particularly responsive pitch in Nagpur in February, will be fresh in their minds.Although that type of wicket is Steyn’s favourite, he doesn’t expect to see a strip as inviting as that all the time. “Every bowler wants a green top but we don’t get them that often. Pitches around the world favour batters these days, I don’t know if it’s because they get used so much and they are worn out. The truth is that you rarely find a wicket that offers bowlers enough to get 20 wickets quickly. We have to work for our wickets.”Steyn singled out the Indian opening partnership as the one that will take the most toil to break. “A guy like Sachin, with the reputation that he is has, is always going to be an important wicket. But for me, their opening pair is terrifying, with Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag.” Without giving away any of the strategies he has been working on, Steyn hinted that South Africa have been brainstorming their bowling tactics . “The important thing for us will be to bowl to plans and to stick to those plans.”A big part of those plans will be the role of the two new-ball bowlers, Steyn and Morne Morkel. “We know if we do well, the team has a good chance of doing well,” Steyn said.Steyn has enjoyed success against India, taking 32 wickets in seven Tests. Morkel has 15 from six against India and together they’ve shared 206 wickets in 24 matches. “We’ve played a lot of cricket together at the Titans and now with the national side and we are always fighting between us for wickets. That really helps us because we are each motivation for the other.” The competition between the two is stiff with Steyn currently lying third on the 2010 list of wicket-takers, with 45 scalps, and Morkel sixth with 37.Steyn has no clear favourite among the three surfaces the Tests will be played on, although he does lean towards his home ground, Newlands, as the one that will offer the best cricketing experience. “All three wickets are great. I grew up playing in Pretoria, so I know exactly what to expect from that pitch. Now I live in Cape Town and it’s just an unbelievable place to play cricket. South Africa’s record is great at Newlands and to have the third test here will be good.”Steyn may be surprised to learn that, of the 45 Tests South Africa played at Newlands, they’ve won 17 and lost 19. Since readmission, which is probably the period Steyn was thinking about, South Africa won 14 out of the 21 matches played there, losing only three.

Tavernier hailed for Rangers vs RB Leipzig

Scottish football journalist Andrew Dickson has been left hailing the display of James Tavernier for Glasgow Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Lowdown: Memorable night

It certainly was a memorable night for the club and its supporters, as the Ibrox faithful triumphed 3-1 against RB Leipzig to put them through 3-2 on aggregate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team will now play Frankfurt in the final, for a chance to win a remarkable piece of silverware and trump their arch-rivals looming domestic triumph.

There were plenty of top performers on the night, but the skipper stood above them all…

The Latest: Tavernier hailed

Taking to Twitter, Dickson was left hailing Tavernier after he scored the opening goal of the game, even going as far as to brand him as an ‘extraordinary leader’ and an ‘absolute legend’:

“Top scorer in the whole competition. All of his goals in the knockouts. And, once again, an extraordinary leader of his team this week. James Tavernier, what an absolute legend.”

The Verdict: Led by example

With the captain’s armband on, Tavernier led by example as he slotted home to become the top scorer in the Europa League this season, from right-back no less.

Attacking wise, he completed both of his dribble attempts, made one key pass and had 69 touches of the ball in total, more than any of his teammates (SofaScore).

He did his fair share of defending too, winning seven of his individual duels, while he also made two clearances, one interception and one tackle in the match (SofaScore).

Nonetheless, Tavernier was just one of many standout performers for the home side on the night, and they will now be looking forward to a major European final later this month.

Multan's QEA woes continue

A round-up of the first day of the ninth round of Division One of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2010

Success for Abdur Rauf but more trouble for Multan•Associated Press

Multan are in horrendous form in the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy and that showed in their miserable capitulation against Rawalpindi at the Bahawal Stadium in Bahawalpur. However, it had seemed that they would be able to bounce back from their eight consecutive defeats when they bowled out Rawalpindi for 153 earlier in the day. Seamer Abdur Rauf took five wickets, new-ball partner Tahir Maqsood took four and had it not been for a half-century from Adnan Mufti’s half-century and his 67-run stand with Muzammil Nizam for the seventh wicket, Rawalpindi would have faced an embarrassment. But they were able to inflict one on Multan, whose batting simply couldn’t measure up to the pace of Rizwan Akbar, who took 6 for 50. They had been reduced to 57 for 7 at one stage and had to rely on Rauf again, this time with the bat, to take them past 100 with an unbeaten 28. The innings folded for 112, with a lead of 41 for Rawalpindi.Bowlers dominated the opening day of the contest between Faisalabad and Sialkot at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha, claiming 16 wickets. Sialkot had the advantage at stumps after skittling out Faisalabad for 88, thanks to a maiden haul of six wickets by seamer Prince Abbas. Only four Faisalabad batsmen managed to reach double-figures. Sialkot gained a lead but lost six wickets in the process in their response, as left-arm spinner Hasan Mahmood took 4 for 36. Wicketkeeper Rizwan Sultan top scored with 30, while the others got starts, but was dismissed shortly before stumps, with Sialkot on 144 for 6, 56 ahead.Table-toppers Habib Bank Limited were on the back foot in their encounter against Pakistan International Airlines at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Seamer Aizaz Cheema cut through the HBL top and middle orders to take 6 for 69 and bowl them out for 211 in just 58 overs. Tottering at 49 for 6, HBL recovered thanks to an attacking 82 from wicketkeeper Humayun Farhat, who fought hard with the tail to lend some respectability to the HBL score. PIA began well in their reply, with openers Khurram Manzoor and Agha Sabir adding an unbeaten 52 before stumps.Islamabad had the advantage at the end of the opening day against Karachi Blues at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. Seamers Nasrullah Khan, Rauf Akbar and Fakhar Hussain grabbed three wickets each to overcome starts by the Karachi top-order batsmen and a half-century from Atif Ali and bowl out the opposition for 237. Nasrullah took some stick, conceding 110 in 25 overs, but Karachi will rue the fact that they let it slip after being in a strong position at 118 for 2. In their reply, Islamabad lost opener Farrukh Hayat early and finished the day on 20 for 1.National Bank of Pakistan and Water and Power Development Authority ended on almost even terms at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Rafatullah Mohmand, unbeaten on 86, helped WAPDA, currently placed second in the table, fight through a middle-order wobble and finish the day on 256 for 8. Openers Ahmed Said and Jahangir Mirza had laid a solid foundation with a stand of 83 but a collapse ensued where seven wickets fell for 94. Seamer Mohammad Talha picked up four wickets but Mohmand found support in Umaid Asif, with whom he added 62 for the eighth wicket. The extras proved useful as well, contributing 28 to the score.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited held the edge against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Opener Yasir Hameed starred with 95, including ten fours, and Shahid Yousuf contributed 80 to set up ZTBL’s score of 294 for 5 at stumps. There was another significant contribution, of an unbeaten 51 by Haris Sohail, which helped consolidate the strong start provided by Hameed.
