George Dobell03-Apr-2012David East, the Essex chief executive, has strongly defended his club’s handling of the spot-fixing episode that saw Mervyn Westfield become the first English professional to receive a prison sentence for cricketing corruption.In Essex’s first major public statement on the affair that ended English cricket’s pretensions of innocence, East categorically denied any wrongdoing on the part of the club and insisted that he reported the allegations to the ECB “immediately” he became aware of them.He also said that prior to the events of August 2010 – when a newspaper sting operation uncovered a spot-fixing ring operating within the Pakistan team – there was a naivety within the domestic game regarding the issue that may have caused the delay in reporting Westfield and Kaneria’s behaviour to the proper authorities.Westfield, a former Essex fast bowler, was jailed for four months in January after he admitted underperforming in a Pro-40 match against Durham in September 2009.Danish Kaneria, the former Pakistan spinner and Essex overseas player, was named by the judge at the Old Bailey as the orchestrator of the plot while it also emerged in court that Kaneria had approached several other Essex players including James Foster and Varun Chopra in the summer of 2009, but no report was made to the ECB until March 2010.It was only when the Professional Cricketers’ Association, the players’ union, made a presentation on the dangers of corruption in cricket to all counties in the spring of 2010 that Essex’s players – and, in particular, Tony Palladino, a seamer in whom Westfield had confided his secret – realised the significance of previous events and made their concerns known to the ECB.”I think the whole game has learned lessons in terms of what happened,” East told ESPNcricinfo. “This was unprecedented territory for the whole game and in 2009 we were in a very different place in terms of awareness of potential risk to the domestic cricket for match fixing or spot fixing.”We’ve all learned an awful lot from it and I think the game is in a better shape going forward now, having had this very, very difficult experience.”East admitted he could understand the concerns of those who questioned the delay in reporting any inappropriate approaches, but insisted that the game owed a debt of gratitude to Essex’s players for coming forward with the information once they realised its significance.”I do understand those concerns and we are very satisfied that once our players were aware of the situation they acted in a prompt manner and dealt with it through the appropriate channels,” East said.”If it wasn’t for the Essex players actually making those reports this whole matter could have gone unreported completely so we’re comfortable with that and we just really need to move on from this now.”This is something which has been extremely distracting for the club for the last couple of years and it would be nice to go through into 2012 focusing entirely on our cricket.”East said the reporting delay was caused because the players had felt Kaneria was joking when he talked about the potential benefits of spot fixing. “That is what was reported in court and that is very true, he said. “I think with some of these things, with the benefit of hindsight, there are certain comments that may have been made.East told how he first heard of the allegations when he was in India with Essex’s chairman, Nigel Hillard. “We were both made aware of it in 2010 and acted immediately in terms of escalating it to the ECB. We dealt with it immediately as soon as we were aware of it.”He also defended the controversial decision to reengage Kaneria for the 2010 season. By the time the season started several members of the playing and coaching staff had made it clear that they did not want the Pakistan bowler back in the team, but Essex had previously agreed a deal for the season and felt that, without firm evidence, there was no way out of that contract. “We were contractually obliged to have Danish back and so we honoured our contract,” Essex said.The ECB continues to consider the evidence against Kaneria and it has yet decide whether to bring formal disciplinary proceedings against him. He was questioned by Essex police in March 2010, but released on grounds of insufficient evidence.

Warwickshire’s Championship hopes have been dealt another severe blow with the news that fast bowler Boyd Rankin is expected to miss the first six weeks of the season with a stress reaction in his right foot.Warwickshire were already resigned to be without allrounder Chris Woakes for the first six-to-eight weeks of the season after he sustained an injury to his ankle ligaments. Woakes and Rankin were expected to open the bowling for Warwickshire this season.Rankin, the tall Ireland international, has had a busy winter representing Ireland in the ICC’s World Cricket League and World Twenty20 qualifiers, as well as for England Lions in Bangladesh and an ICC Combined Associate and Affiliate XI in Dubai.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said: “It’s disappointing to lose Boyd just before the start of the season, but we do have a strong bowling attack and it’s a good opportunity for one of the younger seamers to make a big impression. The victory creates daylight between Daredevils and the rest of the chasing pack, as they remain at the top of the points table.Royals required 15 runs off the last two overs, with nine wickets in hand and victory seemed a foregone conclusion. But, Morkel gave away only three runs in an over filled with yorkers and claimed the wicket of Brad Hodge to set up a tense final over. The fourth ball was fired down the leg side but the umpire, to Hodge’s surprise, didn’t call a wide. It was a crucial decision as only one run separated the teams in the end.Umesh Yadav was tasked with defending 12 runs for Daredevils against the in-form Ajinkya Rahane. Yadav started off with a fast full toss that Rahane missed. Desperation took over as Rahane looked to smash the next delivery, no matter what its length, and ended up mistiming his slices and breaking his bat. Owais Shah stole a single off the inside edge before Rahane hit the first six of the Royals innings, off a full toss to take back the advantage.Two more runs came off the penultimate ball, which left two to get off the final one. Yadav kept it full, Rahane missed but ran anyway and Shah was not quick enough. Naman Ojha hit the stumps to run Shah out and deny Rahane victory, leaving him unbeaten on 84.Rahane and Rahul Dravid are the most successful opening pair in this edition of the IPL and they showed why with a stand of 99 to set up the chase. Sehwag became the first player to score four consecutive half-centuries in the IPL and rebuilt Daredevils innings by himself after two early blows.Mahela Jayawardene and Kevin Pietersen were dismissed in the first three overs but Sehwag’s full range of shots was on hand to resurrect matters. He pulled, reverse swept, drove and struck two stunning sixes over long-off and long-on. Just as he threatened to take the innings away from Royals, they dismissed him when Ashok Menaria took a well-judged catch off a back foot cut.Ross Taylor had been an almost absent partner in the stand with Sehwag and was bowled the over after Sehwag departed. Taylor looked to take a Pankaj delivery from outside off and flick on the leg-side but did not make contact and was bowled.Brad Hogg’s wrong un’s and Cooper and Amit Singh’s changes of pace ensured Ojha and Nagar could barely get away. O garoto de 11 anos, que é deficiente visual, foi apresentado a todos os jogadores por Luiz Felipe Scolari, que capitaneou sua visita pelo CT.

Mãe e filho foram registrados pelas câmeras da TV Globo no Dérbi, com Sílvia narrando os lances do jogo para o menino, que nasceu prematuro e por isso não teve a formação das retinas. Sílvia já tinha uma filha e adotou Nickollas depois de outros 12 casais que estavam à frente na lista desistirem.

Segundo ela, o Palmeiras é uma das coisas que mais alegram o garoto. Eles foram levados ao gramado por Alexandre Mattos, para Felipão então dizer um a um o nome dos jogadores, que respondiam a Nickollas com um abraço.

Durante o tour pela Academia, o menino até bateu bola com Weverton e recebeu alguns presentes. No começo da semana, o palmeirense foi também levado para conhecer as instalações no Allianz Parque.

أكد روجيرو ميكالي المدير الفني لمنتخب مصر الأولمبي، أن هدفه إفادة المنتخب الأول، موضحًا أنه يحب اللاعب المصري.

ويستعد منتخب مصر الأولمبي لمواجهة نظيره زامبيا يوم 22 مارس المقبل، باستاد الدفاع الجوي في الساعة السادسة مساء، في مباراة الذهاب، بالتصفيات المؤهلة إلى نهائيات في التصفيات المؤهلة إلى بطولة كأس الأمم الإفريقية بالمغرب.

وقال ميكالي في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر فضائية “المحور”: “كان لدينا عرضا من أحد المنتخبات الأولى وتحدثنا وتناقشنا، ولكن فكرة ومشروع الأولمبي المصري حمسني لكي أوافق على تدريب منتخب مصر الأولمبي”.

وتابع: “المنتخب الأولمبي لمس لدي الحلم الذي نفسي أن أكرره وهو العودة للأولمبياد مرة أخرى، أحيانا الأمر لا يرتبط بالماديات ولكن بحلمك الذي تريد تحقيقه”.

وأردف: “نستهدف في المنتخب الأولمبي إفادة المنتخب الأول، ولذلك أفكاري تسير بالتوازي مع فلسفة روي فيتوريا المدير الفني للمنتخب الأول”.

وَأضاف: “اللاعبون لديهم رغبة في التطبيق والتطوير، وأنا هنا من أجل اعطائهم جميع الأفكار بشكل سليم”.

وحول أوجه التشابه بين اللاعب المصري والبرازيلي، قال: “هناك بعض النقاط المشتركة بين اللاعبين، اللاعب المصري يحب يستحوذ على الكرة مثل اللاعب البرازيلي”.

اتخذ رئيس نادي ريال مدريد، فلورنتينو بيريز، موقفًا جديدًا ضد برشلونة قبل مباراة الكلاسيكو اليوم، الأحد، في إطار الجولة السادسة والعشرين من بطولة الدوري الإسباني.

There are more elaborate preparations being made elsewhere for the competition; Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and South Africa will soon take part in an unofficial triangular Twenty20 series, Bangladesh have also asked Ireland to arrange for five Twenty20s in July, there is a Sri Lanka Premier League planned for August and several Indian and overseas regulars have already benefited from the IPL.Mohammad Hafeez, the new Pakistan Twenty20 captain, called the IPL a “missed opportunity” for his players, who’ll have to make do with these two games in Hambantota.
