Coughlin career-best sees off Somerset

Paul Coughlin’s career-best performance saw Durham move back to the top of the table with their fifth win from seven games in the LV= County Championship while Somerset slipped to the foot of the table.Coughlin finished with figures of 10-6-10-4, following his important second-innings half-century, and wicketkeeper Michael Richardson held five catches as Somerset succumbed for 158 to lose by 120 runs, slipping to a defeat that looked most unlikely on the second afternoon.Durham’s surge has come even though they have failed to gain a batting point for the last four matches.”I’m surprised we are top because we know there are areas we need to improve,” Paul Collingwood said, reflecting on a fourth consecutive game without a batting point. “I would like to start games a lot better but when we are in trouble it seems to bring out the fighting spirit in this team. They show incredible belief and pride in playing for Durham.””It was an amazing performance for a young guy,” Collingwood said of Coughlin. “His runs were invaluable and he set it up for John Hastings to take the game away from them when their bowlers were tired.”Hastings’ 79 from 68 balls on the second day changed the game and Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick admitted: “It slipped away from us in that session. We have done well in the last two weeks and we were ahead of the game here.”The potential is there but we have to sustain it. You know it’s always going to be tricky here and to score 279 to win was a tough ask. We showed some good resolve and stuck in, but the damage was done yesterday.”As Somerset consider their wicketkeeping options following Craig Kieswetter’s enforced retirement and a five-ball duck for Alex Barrow, who has struggled badly all season and was relegated to No. 9 in the order, they might cast envious glances at Durham. Richardson, who recently took over the gloves from the axed Phil Mustard, held five catches, including a brilliant leg-side take to send back Johann Myburgh for a duck. That came immediately after Graham Onions had Tom Abell lbw for 2 and it would have been 10 for 3 had Collingwood held on to a chance at first slip before James Hildreth had scored. Hildreth and Trescothick gave Somerset hope with a stand of 53 before the pitch’s variable bounce accounted for both. Hildreth was bowled by Coughlin’s third ball, which kept very low, then a leg stump ball from Chris Rushworth leapt at Trescothick and lobbed off the shoulder of the bat to gully.Tom Cooper was the first to go after lunch, although he clearly didn’t agree with the caught behind decision that gave Graham Onions his third wicket. Jim Allenby and Peter Trego did not look in too much difficulty in putting on 26, but then Allenby tried to hook a John Hastings bouncer and edged to Richardson. After Trego played himself in quietly there was a shift in momentum in the 40th over as Onions’ 13th of the innings cost 17 runs, including a no-ball. Hastings had conceded only 14 in 12, but the next over produced 12 runs as Trego and Lewis Gregory began to go for their shots. But the pair were stymied by a double change, as the stand of 41 ended when Coughlin moved one sharply away from Gregory to give Richardson his fourth catch. Alex Barrow survived only five balls before shuffling into a ball from Chris Rushworth which had him lbw for nought. Trego then fell for 35 in identical fashion to Gregory and it was all over when Tim Groenewald drove Coughlin to deep mid-off.

Karn Sharma ruled out of Zimbabwe tour

Kalra: An opportunity for Axar and Harbhajan

Legspinner Karn Sharma has been ruled out of India’s tour of Zimbabwe due to a fractured finger in his left hand. The BCCI said there would not be a replacement, which means India will now have only 14 players to pick from for the three ODIs and two T20s.”It is unfortunate for Karn that he had to miss out because of injury,” India captain Ajinkya Rahane said. “He was a crucial part of our team.”Rahane said the reduction in squad strength didn’t make selection any easier. “It is not easy as a captain to select 11 players because all the players in the squad are equally important for the captain and it is really challenging to pick the best 11.”Karn had played the fourth and fifth ODIs of the home series against Sri Lanka in November last year, taking no wickets for 125 runs in 19 overs. His unavailability leaves India with only two spin options – offspinner Harbhajan Singh and left-armer Axar Patel – for the series in Zimbabwe.India depart for Harare on July 7 and are scheduled to play ODIs on July 10, 12 and 14, followed by Twenty20 internationals on July 17 and 19. Rahane was named captain of a second-string squad that was missing MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan and Umesh Yadav.Revised squad: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), M Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Harbhajan Singh, Axar Patel, Dhawal Kulkarni, Stuart Binny, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma

Red-hot Marsh turns up heat on Watson

‘If I perform the selectors will pick me’ – Mitchell Marsh

On the hottest July day in England since records began, it was hard to know what was at a higher temperature – a sweltering Chelmsford crowd or the scything blade of Mitchell Marsh. Billed as the pretender to Shane Watson’s place as the incumbent Test allrounder, Marsh advanced to his second century in as many innings to leave Essex bedraggled and place enormous pressure on the selectors.A first-innings hundred against a better attack than that presented by Kent at Canterbury was a significant achievement for Marsh, who came to England with two first-class hundreds and now has four. If it arrived in slightly more deliberate style than his joyful thrash at the St Lawrence Ground, 118 balls for three figures was still a rate to please the coach Darren Lehmann. Watson has plenty to do as a bowler in order to secure his spot for the first Investec Ashes Test at Cardiff next week. The major blemish for Marsh was a bad mix-up with Adam Voges when his state captain was on 49, leaving the pair momentarily at the same end of the pitch before the older man sprinted vainly for the bowler’s end. To that point Voges had looked the epitome of assurance, and it is difficult to see how he can be left out of the Cardiff XI following a memorable debut hundred against the West Indies in Dominica last month.’Not putting any pressure on myself’

Mitchell Marsh was not allowing Ashes dreams to cloud his thoughts during a commanding century on day one of Australia’s tour match against Essex that put him well and truly in the frame to be chosen as the team’s allrounder.
“I’m certainly not putting any pressure on myself,” Marsh said. “It doesn’t matter where you bat or play, if you take enough wickets and make enough runs the selectors are going to pick you at some stage. I’ve certainly put no pressure on myself, I’m just enjoying it and it’s a privilege to be on this tour.”
The deciding factor between Marsh and Shane Watson may well be how the pair bowl in this fixture, and Marsh was eager to take the ball even though he bowled plenty of overs against Kent in Canterbury. “I’m happy to bowl as many overs as the skipper wants me to bowl. I think bowling is something where the more you do, the better you get, so hopefully I can get some overs in this game.”
Marsh conceded he was at fault in the mix-up that ended in the run out of Adam Voges, at a time when the WA captain was playing fluently. “I’m still asking myself that to be honest. I almost ran Nev out too,” Marsh said. “Maybe it’s just a few nerves. I’m not too sure what happened there but it was certainly my fault and I owe my West Australian skipper a beer I think.”
As for the hottest English July day on record, the Perth-born Marsh struggled to see the significance. “I almost took the vest out to bat,” he said. “It was a beautiful day.”

Other encouraging signs were shown by David Warner, who looked to have struck an ideal balance between attack and defence in a morning innings that safely negotiated the new ball – even if it was delivered somewhat gently by Jesse Ryder – before picking gaps more or less at will. Chris Rogers was less happy with his day, adjudged caught behind then standing his ground in some disbelief before trudging from the field.Essex were more generous hosts than they had been in 2005, not only trading first use of a good pitch at the toss in return for a full four days of well-attended cricket to help replenish the county’s coffers, but also shelling no fewer than four chances – one from Watson, one from Peter Nevill and two from Marsh, albeit the first at 98. It was possible to wonder what impact an absent Reece Topley might have had in the humid air.Warner and Rogers resumed an opening union that was broken by the latter’s troubles with concussion in the West Indies, and over the course of the first 60 runs of the day showed their complementary qualities. Tom Moore was delighted to see the umpire’s finger raised when Rogers drove at a ball going across him and may have clipped the ground, and ecstatic when next ball Michael Clarke flicked absent-mindedly to a waiting Ryan ten Doeschate at leg gully. Once again Clarke had been unable to play the long innings. That blip did not mean an Australian collapse however, as Warner, Voges and Watson all played smoothly and well. None went on to three figures, Warner steering to gully when he seemed intent on reaching his century before the lunch interval, then Watson ending a serviceable stay by dragging ten Doeschate on to the stumps. It was an error that cleared the stage for Marsh, who was quickly into stride and and regularly advancing down the pitch to dropkick Aron Nijjar to the wide mid-on boundary. The power Marsh has always been able to summon is now augmented by greater discretion, something he had demonstrated on his Test match debut against Pakistan in the UAE. One straight drive was a picture of excellence, while the blow down the ground to get to his century left a permanent dent in the roof of the River Stand.Even accounting for the heat and the easy-paced nature of the pitch, Marsh has set down an impressive marker as the only member of the squad to make successive hundreds in these two matches. The fall of regular wickets at the other end, scotched by a sturdy hand from the reserve wicketkeeper Nevill, also meant Marsh could go on beyond his century as the day edged towards a sweaty, muggy close. He will need to do more on the morrow with the ball to make his claims undeniable, and this time Watson will be decidedly eager to roll his arm over after requesting an exemption from bowling against Kent in order to be as fit as possible for the Tests. If he can’t stand the heat, Marsh will be taking Watson’s place in the kitchen.

Knee injury forces Lasith Malinga to return home

Lasith Malinga’s knee injury has forced his return home from the World T20, a release from Sri Lanka Cricket said

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Mar-2016

Lasith Malinga will play no further part in the World T20•Associated Press

Lasith Malinga has been ruled out of the World Twenty20 with injury, dealing a substantial blow to Sri Lanka’s campaign. Having flown to India earlier this week hopeful of playing some part in the tournament, Malinga has aggravated the bone bruise in his left knee that has plagued him since November. He has returned to Sri Lanka, and the selectors are expected to name a replacement over the next 72 hours, following practice games in Colombo on Friday.Malinga had been preparing to play Sri Lanka’s opening World T20 match against Afghanistan on Thursday, having increased his bowling load incrementally through the week. He was seen warming up ahead of the game, but pulled up as he ran in to bowl one of his practice deliveries, and stopped bowling thereafter. It was later confirmed he had aggravated his injury, and would play no part in the tournament. There have been serious doubts over Malinga’s fitness right through the approach to the tournament. Malinga was only able to play one match out of four in the Asia Cup, and had also stepped down from the captaincy when it became apparent he could not guarantee his availability for the full World T20.He had said he was hopeful of playing in the World T20 in early March, but more recently, had questioned why the selectors chose him in the Sri Lanka squad when he felt he was clearly unfit. He had joined the side on Monday nevertheless, but will now have spent less than four days with them before he was withdrawn from the tournament. This bone bruise is similar to the injury Malinga had sustained in his right knee in 2008. On that occasion, he was out of international cricket for almost two years. As he is now 32 years of age, there is a chance the current injury is serious enough to end Malinga’s international career. He has also had trouble with his left ankle in recent years. Malinga underwent surgery on that ankle in 2014, but has been a diminished bowler since his return.Sri Lanka have some seam-bowling cover in their present squad, which features Suranga Lakmal in addition to Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Kulasekara, who played against Afghanistan. Malinga had been the spearhead of the T20 attack however, and was instrumental to Sri Lanka’s march to three World T20 finals over the last four tournaments. He remains the World T20’s highest wicket-taker, with 38 scalps from 31 matches.

A cerveja?
