Spurs fans elated by new Thomas Meunier report

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to every man and his dog since the Premier League halted action ahead of what should, no doubt, be a relatively busy summer for Jose Mourinho as he’ll be looking to build his own squad of players.

One reported target who probably isn’t going to make the switch to north London is Paris Saint-Germain full-back Thomas Meunier after The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare branded the potential move as “very unlikely” in a recent podcast appearance.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And members of the Spurs faithful have been reacting to the information on social media. It’s safe to say they are pretty elated with the news.

The 28-year-old has played a bit-part role for Thomas Tuchel in the French capital this season despite racking up 27 appearances in all competitions, only 16 of those have come in Ligue 1, per Transfermarkt.

Meunier is entering the final few months of his contract having been at PSG since 2016, so would be available for a free transfer ahead of next season.

But supporters really don’t want to see him at Spurs, here’s what has been said…

Spurs star could have the absolute best brought out of him by Mourinho

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Dele Alli could be about to benefit immensely from Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

The attacking midfielder had been drifting for quite some time under Mauricio Pochettino, scoring just five Premier League goals last season.

But he has the ability to thrive. In 2016/17, he scored 18 times in the top-flight, while also providing nine assists, having scored 10 the season prior.

Pochettino didn’t truly give Alli – who Transfermarkt value at £81m – the opportunity to play as a classic No.10, in that sort of role where he can float between attack and midfield and look to cut defences apart. Instead, he was part of a well-drilled defensive unit and that started in attack, as Pochettino obliged his side to press from the front.

But Mourinho has a history of bringing the best out of No.10s.

At Inter Milan, he transformed Wesley Sneijder into one of the very best players in world football.

As the Italian side won the treble, the ex-Netherlands international scored eight goals in all competitions but also provided 15 assists, including one in the final against Bayern Munich.

He was so good, that Sneijder finished fourth in the voting for the Ballon d’Or, behind Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

At Real Madrid, too, Mourinho brought the best out of Mesut Ozil, a player who has proved to be an enigmatic presence at Arsenal.

In 157 games under the Portuguese’s tutelage, the ex-Germany international registered 80 assists and scored 27 goals. In La Liga alone, in 2010/11 and 2011/12, he laid on no fewer than 38 assists.

This is a player that, at Arsenal, managed 19 in 15/16 but in the league has managed just 21 in the three seasons since.

Mourinho, though, found a way to unlock his potential and one has to feel that he could do the same for Alli.

Go back even further, and Frank Lampard – albeit more as a late runner from a deeper position – finished up as Chelsea’s top scorer while Mourinho masterminded back-to-back Premier League titles for the Blues.

The England international is in a prime position; Christian Eriksen’s contract situation – his deal expires this summer – could well see him pushed to the peripheries and Alli has the ability to step in and become a hub of goals and assists from midfield.

That may require Mourinho using Alli in more of a 4-4-1-1 system than a 4-2-3-1, allowing him the freedom to play off the shoulder of Kane and at times form almost a flat pairing strike force, as the Spurs star did to great effect while Pochettino employed a 3-4-3 with Alli drifting in from the left.

But fundamentally, the role is the same – one of freedom of movement and the rest of the team being shaped around a single attacking midfielder’s qualities.

If history is anything to go by, Alli will thrive under Mourinho’s direction.

Spurs fans react to reports claiming Mourinho wants Campos at the club

According to the Daily Record’s Duncan Castles, Jose Mourinho is working hard on getting Lille’s Luis Campos to Tottenham Hotspur as their new technical director.

The same source claims that the man in question is currently one of the hottest prospects in his position – best known for his stints at Monaco and his current gig at Lille – and Mourinho sees him as a suitable man to fill in the vacant spot at the London club.

Bringing in such a big name would definitely go a long way to helping the Special One bring some silverware back to the club, and for that reason, many of the Spurs fans were actually delighted to hear this update.

They even called Campos a potential long-term game-changer and would seemingly prioritise signing him over getting new players to join Tottenham.

Needless to say, they are all up for this move.

Charlton’s Lee Bowyer delivers injury update on Lyle Taylor

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Injury News series, which considers the impact of the latest updates on players’ fitness.

Lee Bowyer has revealed that it is uncertain whether Lyle Taylor will be able to play for Charlton Athletic against Cardiff City, as reported by London News Online.

What’s the story?

Taylor has been unavailable for Charlton’s last 10 Championship games, having suffered knee ligament damage while on international duty with Montserrat.

It had initially been hoped that he would be available for the Addicks’ match against Preston North End at the very beginning of November, but he eventually missed that game, as well as the 2-1 loss against Millwall.

The aim now is that the 29-year-old will be able to make his comeback against Cardiff on Saturday, though it is not a certainty, as Bowyer told London News Online: “He’s got a bit of tightness somewhere and it’s just going to be a case of trying to manage him this week and seeing how he goes.

“Whether he makes it or not is touch and go, I’m going to try everything in my power to try and get him ready.”

Can’t be rushed

Having Taylor would be a massive boost for Charlton because he can be a key member of the team.

This is signified by the fact he scored 5 goals and got an assist during the first 6 league games of the campaign.

This would also be the perfect time to have an influential player come back from injury, as Bowyer’s side have now only picked up 1 point from their last 4 games.

However, it is the extent of his importance that suggests he shouldn’t be rushed back as a recurrence of the injury would be a massive blow for Charlton’s season.

They should definitely get Taylor into the team if he is able to play, but Bowyer shouldn’t rush the striker back if he is not completely fit.

Man City fans react to reports suggesting the club won’t receive a Champions League ban

Manchester City fans have reacted to the reports that the club won’t receive a ban from the Champions League following investigations into Financial Fair Play.

The news comes from The Athletic’s Sam Lee, who states that the findings on the case are set to be revealed next month, but sources say they will only receive a fine.

Lee also touches on how many within the sport expected Pep Guardiola’s men to be banned from Europe following such expensive spending.

This comes after reports from Der Spiegel suggested the club had lied about spending millions in the transfer market, hiding various costs which should have been calculated for FFP.

Now, with this incredible report, the fans are buzzing with the result. A lot of fans have laughed at the fact they might be free from trouble, as another supporter said: “We can spend what we want”.

Another fan joked by saying “get the bubbly out”, whilst another follower touched on how they will just spend big in the summer again.

Here’s what some of them have had to say…

Liverpool: Fans don’t want to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain representing England

Liverpool fans are unhappy about Gareth Southgate selecting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to represent England in their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The 26-year-old recently made a comeback after missing 12 months due to rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during the Reds’ Champions League semi-final against Roma in 2018.

He has scored four goals in his last four games, scoring against his former club Arsenal in the Carabao Cup and in both ties against Genk, where he scored a brace at the Luminus Arena.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has made 57 appearances since his £35m move from Arsenal in 2017 and has scored nine goals and provided nine assists in that time.

After a positive start to the new campaign in which Liverpool are six points clear at the top of the Premier League, supporters are unhappy with him going to play for England.

One fan said that the club should “kindly” tell Southgate no and that the last thing that the club needs is a freak injury during the international break.

Wolves can make a statement and meet Fosun’s aims with Prince Adegoke addition

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to allnigeriasoccer.com, Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of three Premier League clubs fighting to clinch the signature of Chelsea goalkeeper Prince Adegoke.

What’s the word?

Adegoke is a member of the academy squad over at Stamford Bridge, and with the club yet to decide on their next intake of scholars, the 16-year-old could well be available to sign elsewhere in the near future.

It is believed that he is highly-rated by the youth team staff at the club as he was once named on the bench for an U18 fixture aged just 14, and he was part of the side that won the Premier League International Tournament last month.

The report also suggests the Nigerian is keen on staying with the west London outfit, but his hand may be forced if they do not keep him on.

Meaning Wolves could swoop in, though, they will have to beat off interest from Arsenal and Bournemouth to do so.

Statement

On the face of it, capturing a young starlet doesn’t seem too much like a statement of intent, but if they are to convince Adegoke to join the club ahead of both Chelsea themselves and Arsenal, then they are doing something right.

Even more so when you consider how Blues boss Frank Lampard has been handing chances to youth this season – it would only take a good season or two to throw his name into the reckoning.

The move would also double up as a positive to Fosun’s ambitions to start transforming their own academy to a standard that would allow progression into the first team.

Check out a hilarious review of Wolves’ new ‘Mexico’ kit in the video below…

Several of their youngsters featured in the Carabao Cup defeat last week, but that is merely the first stage in the process as only Morgan Gibbs-White has truly come through the system to become somewhat a squad player under Nuno – he has played 64 times in the old gold shirt.

By beating off two European finalists to such a highly-regarded prospect, it would only go to show that the west Midlands club has enough about it to lure such talents – which is a major benefit going forward.

Leeds fans fume as Phil Hay’s tweet confirms Patrick Bamford will start

Leeds United fans have had their worst nightmares confirmed as Phil Hay tweeted that Marcelo Bielsa intends to start Patrick Bamford against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

There has been a huge campaign from supporters and pundits alike for Eddie Nketiah to replace Bamford in the Whites’ starting XI, but their prayers haven’t been answered.

Of course, the fanbase have been moaning on Twitter after this latest development.

You can completely understand why the supporters are fuming with Hay’s update.

Bamford hasn’t scored in any of his last eight games for the Whites, while Nketiah has netted every 73.3 minutes in the Championship so far this term.

Nketiah scored on Tuesday as Leeds drew with Preston, and it seemed as if Bielsa couldn’t continue ignoring the Arsenal loanee, but he’s defied belief by admitting that his selection of striker won’t change.

It remains to be seen how Bamford gets on against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, but fans aren’t happy with the fact that he’s going to be starting at Hillsborough.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Liverpool fans react to Emre Can’s latest setback

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to Emre Can’s latest misfortune, as the Germany international was sent off for his country on Sunday night.

When it rains it pours. Well, at least if you’re a 25 year-old midfielder who used to play for Liverpool it does anyway.

After Can publicly admitted he was unhappy with his lack of playing time at Juventus, Reds fans were far from sympathetic, and plenty have now been reacting to his latest blunder.

Despite making just three appearances this campaign in Turin, the former Anfield ace was picked to start for Germany against Estonia on Sunday, but was sent off after just 14 minutes.

His side recovered impressively and won 3-0 courtesy of a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and strike from Timo Werner, but that isn’t stopping Reds fans discussing their former charge, who left on a free transfer in 2018.

One member of the Anfield faithful admitted they feel for Can after his latest setback, but several others didn’t share that sentiment.

Aston Villa fans hail Anwar El Ghazi after his start to the Premier League season

Aston Villa moved out of the bottom three with a ruthless victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

It is only their second win of this current Premier League season as the Villans stuck five past the injury-stricken Canaries.

Club-record signing Wesley doubled his season tally with a first-half brace, but it could have easily been a hat-trick as the 22-year-old saw a penalty saved.

Midfielders Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane, and Douglas Luiz all got on the scoresheet themselves before Josip Drmic netted a consolation goal with less than three minutes remaining.

Anwar El Ghazi was also in fine form, registering two assists before being withdrawn just after the hour mark, meaning he has had a more significant contribution than anyone else in the Villa side when it comes to providing assists.

Several fans from B6 have started to recognise the rich vein of form the 24-year-old is in, and many have taken to social media to heap considerable praise on him.

One supporter brandished El Ghazi as the ‘Dutch Ronaldo’ while another claimed he was ‘massively underrated’ after his cross for Wesley was ‘inch-perfect.’

‘Absolute baller’ and ‘legend’ were just two other phrases used to describe the winger following the drubbing.
