Arsenal fans fume as Unai Emery leaves Mesut Ozil out once again

Some Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter in fury after they discovered that Unai Emery had left Mesut Ozil out of the squad once again for the game against Bournemouth.

The Germany international has made just one Premier League appearance all season, playing 71 minutes of the 2-2 draw against Watford.

Ozil has also made one appearance in the Carabao Cup, again playing 71 minutes of the win over Nottingham Forest.

Emery said that he left the former Real Madrid man out of the side in the midweek Europa League win over Standard Liege because other players deserved their place more – it is a puzzling situation between player and coach.

It is also a decision by Emery that the Arsenal fans on Twitter don’t appear to be behind.

One supporter called Emery a disgrace, while another said that his treatment of Ozil is getting out of hand.

Let’s take a look at some more of the reaction from the unhappy Arsenal fans on Twitter…

Tottenham leave Paul Merson "worried" after Liverpool defeat

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Paul Merson has claimed that he is “worried” for Tottenham Hotspur after their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, per Sky Sports.

What’s he said?

Mauricio Pochettino’s men took a 1-0 lead against the Reds at Anfield but were ultimately outclassed by Jurgen Klopp’s side, registering just 32% possession and having 11 shots on goal compared to the hosts’ 21.

And Merson believes that Spurs could have been humiliated, even with Son Heung-Min hitting the bar with the score at 1-0.

Indeed, goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made a total of 12 saves throughout the encounter.

The former Arsenal midfielder said: “I’d be so worried if I was Tottenham and I know they only got beaten 2-1, but what score could it have been?

“I know they had their chances and if Heung-Min Son goes round the goalkeeper and doesn’t hit the bar, it’s 2-0 and then it’s a different game but the best player on the pitch was the goalkeeper.

“That can’t be right if you’re a Tottenham fan. It could have been seven or eight and I’m not saying that because I played for Arsenal; it’s what I saw.

“The week before, they went 1-0 down against Watford early doors and you think ‘that’s alright, they’ll come back and win this game,’ but that didn’t materialise and that’s the problem. I worry for Tottenham at the moment because something is not right and their result against Liverpool covered over the cracks.

“It was a Polyfilla performance, but people will think it wasn’t a bad result, and if Spurs didn’t hit the bar, it would have been 2-0 and a different game. Yes, it would’ve been, but how many chances did Liverpool have before it was 2-0? That’s what you’ve got to ask yourself.”

Too passive

Spurs could have taken this game by the scruff of the neck.

As soon as they took their 1-0 lead, there was an opportunity to up the intensity and attempt to pin Liverpool into their own half and look to land a knockout blow.

Instead, they retreated into their shell, sticking instead of twisting and allowing the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to pepper Gazzaniga’s goal with shots.

But this is becoming a habit and, really, Merson is absolutely right.

When Spurs drew 2-2 with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, they had just three shots on goal compared to the 30 of the Premier League champions.

Versus Arsenal, another 2-2 draw, Spurs had 13 shots to the Gunners’ 26.

In those two outings, Tottenham got away with it; against Liverpool, their luck ran out and one has to wonder whether or not they will continue to be bitten by their lack of positivity.

Barcelona’s Arthur Melo was brilliant in clash with Borussia Dortmund

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The highly-anticipated Champions League is finally here and Barcelona opened their 2019/20 European campaign with a rather difficult away trip to Borussia Dortmund.

The Catalan and the German giants shared the points in a 0-0 draw and will both be hoping for more luck in future fixtures; both sides have to take on Inter Milan and Slavia Prague in the group stages.

The Blaugrana were mostly on the back foot throughout the 90 minutes and the stats do suggest that Dortmund were just slightly more threatening going forward as the Germans registered 13 shots compared to the Catalans’ seven.

But at the end of the day, regardless of the result, they have a point under their name after a difficult away game, which is not a bad thing.

Another good thing Ernesto Valverde can be extremely satisfied with was Arthur Melo’s brilliant performance.

The 23-year-old Brazilian midfielder played the full 90 minutes of the game and warranted his initial €31m (£27.4m) price tag on the night.

He recorded a game-highest 106 touches and deployed the joint-highest number of passes with a total of 84, with 91.7% passing accuracy.

But that wasn’t all he did. Arthur also tallied nine out of nine attempted long balls and was pretty active in the defensive phases of the game for Barcelona, as well.

He registered one tackle, one interception and one clearance, giving him an overall rating of 7.14, courtesy of Whoscored.

Scrambling for a point is not really Barcelona’s preferred style of play but if there’s anything Valverde can take away from this clash and be proud of, then it is the Brazilian’s performance.

It remains to be seen if he can keep this form going.

Barcelona’s continued Neymar interest is bad news for Dembele

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Just when we thought the Neymar saga had finally reached its conclusion, Mundo Deportivo broke a story suggesting that Barcelona will remain attentive to the Brazilian’s performances at Paris Saint-Germain, with a view to re-signing him in the future. This might not be the best piece of news for everyone in Ernesto Valverde’s squad.

What’s the word, then?

Neymar ended up staying in France despite his and Barcelona’s efforts to get him back to Catalunya, the place he left two years ago. But whoever thought the closing of the summer transfer window would signal the end of the sag was very wrong. Mundo Deportivo claim that Blaugrana will monitor the Brazilian throughout the 2019/20 season and will then decide their next move.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But if he performs like they expect him to, they will return and try to sign him next year. The same Catalonian outlet also reported that Neymar will have a set release clause by FIFA come next year and that Barcelona, or anyone else for that matter, will be able to claim the player for €170m (£153.7m) if they wish to do so.

All of that suggests the Brazilian will have a higher chance of leaving in 2020 than he had in 2019. This might play right into Barcelona’s hands but might also spell doom for Ousmane Dembele.

A clear sign

It really does sound quite simple: if Neymar comes, Dembele will have little to no part to play in this team.

That much was already spelt out for him once he was reportedly offered as a bargaining chip in one of Barcelona’s last offers to Paris-Saint Germain. Even now, when there’s no Neymar in the team, Dembele is probably going to struggle to break into a starting XI that could plausibly boast Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann.

The signs are already there: Barcelona are slowly losing patience when it comes to their 22-year-old superstar and their second-highest purchase in the history of the club. Sure, Dembele can be slotted on either of the wings but both of those positions are likely to be occupied by one of the aforementioned superstars.

Maybe he gets some game time as a sub here and there but his struggle to remain fit alongside his youth and inexperience all play against him at the moment. Of course, those problems can be ironed out with enough time but it still remains to be seen whether Dembele will have the luxury of getting enough time to develop.

If Neymar’s potential return already threatened his role at the club, it could completely seal it come the next one.

Leicester City fans praise Christian Fuchs after his performance in the Chelsea draw

[ad_pod ]Leicester City held Frank Lampard’s Chelsea to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon but the Foxes would have come away feeling rather hard done by after missing a number of second-half chances that could have easily won the match.Nobody would have been reeling quite like James Maddison, who skied an effort well over the bar from about eight yards out with the game tied entering the final 15 minutes. The attacking midfielder was the provider of the equalising goal from Wilfred Ndidi, who himself had to atone for the earlier mistake of allowing Mason Mount to get an early seventh-minute goal on his home debut. In defence, there was one notable absentee as regular first choice left-back Ben Chilwell was ruled out of the match with a minor hip problem – the 22-year-old played 36 of their 38 Premier League games last season.Watch Leicester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Christian Fuchs, who won the Premier League with Leicester back in 2016, deputised and put in a solid performance that has left many fans at the King Power Stadium praising the 33-year-old.

One supporter claimed that the 6 foot 2 left-back couldn’t be dropped with another reinforcing that view by stating the Austrian is ‘a million times better than Chilwell’.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers revealed that the England international “should be fine for next weekâ€, so Fuchs could be dropped for the trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United on Saturday despite his performance.

Other fans called Fuchs ‘a true Leicester legend’ whilst one member of the Foxes faithful even wants him to stay forever.

Marcelo Bielsa must maintain shrewd approach in promotion pursuit with Leeds United

[ad_pod ]

The words injury blow and Leeds United have become rather synonymous with each other in the last year.

Marcelo Bielsa may have turned Leeds back into a side with swagger but there is still one huge problem and it may just have another colossal say in their bid for promotion.

Before Tuesday night’s defeat against Stoke in the Carabao Cup, the Whites were unbeaten this season. Indeed they still are in league action, sitting top of the Championship, but the injuries are still there for Leeds.

At the moment they’re missing Luke Ayling and Tyler Roberts, two individuals who have yet to feature in any form of football this term.

Players like Stuart Dallas, who scored against Stoke, and Adam Forshaw, who has completed 91.8% of his passes, have stepped up adequately but the fact remains that lingering fitness issues are still a concern.

If you were to walk into the Thorp Arch training ground, it would probably feel like an elephant in the room.

In mid-February last season, Leeds were staring down the barrel of a campaign that had 28 separate injury issues and a total of 140 games missed.

By early-April, that had risen to 31 issues. The number of games missed sat on 165 and that wasn’t even including those who were set to be ruled out for the season.

The sheer volume of injuries was nigh on absurd and it’s understandable if there were yet more worries about this in 2019/20.

As a result, a cunning policy that Bielsa adopted last Saturday needs to be implemented throughout the campaign.

Liam Cooper suffered an injury against Brentford on Pontus Jansson’s return to Elland Road and although it was a knock, aggravating an ankle issue, the Argentine decided to be cautious with his fitness, ultimately not selecting him for Leeds’ clash with Stoke in the Championship the following week.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he told reporters: “He could have played today, but he wasn’t at 100 per cent.”

And therein lies what now must become a common theme in Leeds’ season. If a player isn’t fit enough and is a remote risk, they shouldn’t play.

Whatever Bielsa does in training clearly has an effect on his players and the very fact that there had been 31 issues by April last season tells the story.

There is more than just bad luck at play here.

That’s why he needs to be cunning and continue to use this policy going forward, especially if they’re targeting promotion.

Cooper was a major player for Leeds in 2018/19 and was named in the PFA Team of the Year. However, despite his impressive start to this season, conceding just twice alongside Ben White, he was left out against the Potters.

This was a sensible decision and one which proves that Bielsa is learning the lessons from last term.

It was a horrible campaign as far as injuries were concerned and it undoubtedly impacted on their failed promotion dream.

Knowing when to take risks separates the good from the great managers but at this early stage in the season there is no compulsion to gamble.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

If a player isn’t 100% up to the task they should be left on the substitutes bench or at home until they have fully recovered.

This might be more difficult given Leeds’ slim squad but it’s still a possibility with some of the young players they possess.

After all, it appears Leeds are developing Leif Davis from a left back into a central defender because of the sparsity of their options. He played there against Salford and Stoke in the EFL Cup.

It might be that this season we start to see a few more of the Whites’ big guns left out on occasions when perhaps they are just about fit enough to start the game.

The Championship is a strenuous division and after all of the issues they had during Bielsa’s first year at the helm, it would be sensible to rest star names when necessary.

With Cooper missing out last Saturday, that was a fine example of what will need to be done.

The 64-year-old must take this into consideration more often to ensure Leeds are well-placed for promotion.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has surely risen in England pecking order

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Joe Gomez’s chances of becoming a regular for England have been boosted despite him not playing a minute over the international break.

The 22-year-old was left out of the side by Gareth Southgate, who instead opted to start Harry Maguire and Everton’s Michael Keane.

Without John Stones in the squad it was an opportunity for a different centre-back to stake their claim for a starting place, and after his performance against Kosovo, in which he gave away the first goal, it looks all the more surprising that Keane got the nod for both of the Three Lions’ matches.

Gomez has started just three games this term and that may be why he was omitted, but Keane’s displays could well have done him a favour.

The Liverpool man has been described as England’s best defender by former striker Darren Bent due to his “powerful” nature. Added to that, he is also skilful with the ball at his feet and has shown composure in playing out from the back – boasting an 87.5% passing accuracy in the Premier League last season.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Such reliability on the ball could place him above Keane in the pecking order due to the 26-year-old’s sloppiness in possession – the Everton man also gave the ball away on nine occasions, which was the fourth-most of any England player on the night, as well as handing Kosovo their first goal.

Southgate expressed his willingness for England to continue playing out of the back after costly errors against the Netherlands in last season’s Nations League clash, but also a desire to see the Three Lions improve in that aspect.

While Gomez remains one of England’s best centre-back options in that regard, Keane has shown he’s not quite up to the task. Sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Rangers fans confident about Hearts cup draw

[ad_pod ]

Rangers will take on Hearts in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park with a place in the centre-piece later this calendar year at stake.

The Gers will feel as though they are the favourites for the clash, too, given the start that they have made to the season with five top flight wins under their belts already, and it’ll now be up to the Jambos to try and prove them wrong at the start of November.

The Light Blues could have faced Aberdeen – as they do at the weekend – with the tie between them and the Edinburgh side going to penalties but it was soon confirmed that it’s the men from Tynecastle that stand in the way of the Bears and the final.

Fans, naturally, have reacted to this news on Twitter so let’s take a look at the best of what has been said about the draw on the social media site…

The Gers supporters certainly seem confident – let’s see they if they are proven right to be.

Manchester United fans react to reported new contract offer for Victor Lindelof

[ad_pod ]

Having arrived in the summer of 2017 from Benfica, Victor Lindelof has endured a rather mixed career at Old Trafford.

The Sweden international has shown glimpses of why Manchester United splashed out big-money to sign him, but there have also been occasions where he has come under heavy criticism.

However, the 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to the current campaign, helping the Red Devils to a resounding 4-0 win over top-four rivals Chelsea.

Now, The Daily Mirror claim United see Lindelof as a long-term partner to Harry Maguire in the centre of defence, and are willing to offer the Swede double the amount of money he is currently earning.

The report adds Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are ready to hand the former Benfica ace a three-year extension worth £150k-a-week.

After hearing the news Lindelof could be offered a new contract, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted the centre-back “deserves” the reported offer for showing his “class”.

Others however were far more reluctant to see the club offer such a huge pay-rise to someone who hasn’t consistently produced for the side just yet.

Premier league title rivals City and Arsenal played out a dramatic, and at times heated, 2-2 draw last weekend – with both sets of players nearly coming to blows at the Etihad. Despite multiple City players criticising the Gunners' tactics, alongside rows taking place on the pitch, Arteta still has the utmost respect and admiration for his fellow Spaniard Guardiola – a man he worked under at City before joining Arsenal in 2019.

    WHAT MIKEL ARTETA SAID

When asked about Guardiola, he told reporters on Friday: "I love him, I respect him, I admire him and I admire his team and everything that he does. This is sport. One thing is our profession, another is our personal relationship.

"If our relationship was damaged because one draws and the other one wins or the amount of times that they've beaten us, I would not talk to him any more. So that's not our relationship, especially the relationship that I consider both of us have. In sport it will never get in my way, a personal relationship, that's for sure. If you don't like opinions then you shouldn't be sitting in the position that I am.

"It's quite simple. Don't take it personally. It's part of our job. The things that you really care about, make sure you handle them in the right way. That relationship I really care about."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ultimately, football is a results business, where teams try and win at all costs. Arsenal are trying to dethrone defending Premier League champions City and lift their first league title since 2004. Winning trophies is the ultimate goal but it seems Arteta still holds Guardiola in high esteem.
