Donny van de Beek is proving to be a huge waste of money after latest Manchester United snub

It finished all square at Old Trafford as Manchester United battled to a bitter draw with Chelsea which has left both clubs in a bit of a predicament.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for a conservative starting line-up, whilst Frank Lampard likewise decided to do the same, though the Blues boss may find himself facing more questions about his side’s progress after a summer spending spree.

Solskjaer is hardly short of options, as Edinson Cavani came off the bench to earn his first-team debut, while Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba made appearances as substitutes. But there was one noticeable absentee – and no, we’re not talking about Axel Tuanzebe, although the centre-back may have felt a little bit aggrieved to miss out after playing a starring role in the 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League.

Donny van de Beek may be asking himself why he ever decided to leave Ajax in the first place.

The 23-year-old has made just two starts for the Red Devils since joining from the Dutch giants, appearing against Luton Town and Brighton in the Carabao Cup. Van de Beek has barely played in the Premier League, with four appearances as a substitute combining for a grand total of 60 minutes so far, whilst he came off the bench in the closing stages of the Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Solskjaer is facing increasing scrutiny over his lack of minutes, but he promised that it won’t be too long before Van de Beek becomes a first-team regular and insisted that he is part of his plans for the future.

He told Sky Sports, as quoted by The Manchester Evening News: “Don’t worry about that, he’ll get his games. Don’t worry about that.

“It’s easy to say who should be playing and more difficult to say who shouldn’t.”

Van de Beek cost the Red Devils £35m in the summer, whilst they also splashed out on Cavani,  Facundo Pellistri, Alex Telles and Amad Traore, which has taken Solskjaer’s spending well above the £200m mark if you include the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James and Harry Maguire as well.

The Dutch international is thought to be earning wages worth £107,000-per-week, according to De Telegraaf, as relayed by The Daily Express. This means that Ed Woodward will have thrown £35m down the drain for the sake of a few substitute appearances, as it’s hard to imagine him starting in front of Fernandes and Pogba in their deadly midfield partnership anytime soon. It just doesn’t add up at all.

Quite why United decided to sign Van de Beek in the first place we will probably never understand. It’s safe to say that Solskjaer’s side were already pretty stacked in the midfield prior to his arrival, as Fred, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Pogba have staked their claims for a place in the starting line-up in recent weeks.

During his twelve years at the Johan Cruyff Arena, the Dutchman made over 150 appearances for Ajax, scoring 41 goals and supplying 34 assists in all competitions, via Transfermarkt. He hasn’t even hit double digits at United yet.

And his latest snub could be the final straw as his representatives are growing frustrated by his lack of guaranteed game time. Dutch legend Marco van Basten believes Van de Beek will regret his move to United in the summer. He told Ziggo Sport, as relayed by The Daily Mail: “Donny should not have gone to Manchester United.

‘When you are a good player you want to play every week.

“It is really bad for a player like Donny to play only six or seven games this year. That is shocking for your match rhythm.

“I know he is earning loads and loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club.”

Woodward’s decision is now looking like a disastrous deal, as another unhappy star is arguably the last thing the club need at the moment. Would the board have been better off focusing all of their efforts on signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund instead? Only time will tell.

The Athletic provides breakdown of Newcastle’s takeover collapse

The Athletic have revealed some of the reasons behind Newcastle’s takeover collapsing, including the claim that both Liverpool and Tottenham were “strongly against” the takeover.

What’s the word?

After months of deliberation and waiting, the consortium attempting to buy the Magpies finally pulled out of their bid, revealing that they were withdrawing from the process with “regret”.

Now, The Athletic have broken down some of the reasons behind that decision. They claim that: “multiple sources from the consortium had told them the Premier League had given them “private assurances” before the deal was signed; the Premier League has been “unduly influenced by politically motivated attacks from third parties”; they suspect some of their top-flight rivals, believed to be Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in particular, were strongly against the takeover and made their opposition evident to administrators.”

Takeover heartbreak

For Newcastle fans, seeing the takeover collapse after months of waiting patiently for it to go through must sting immensely.

The Magpies faithful were sold a dream of Mike Ashley’s tenure as owner finally coming to an end, so for it to all blow up in their face at the final hurdle is a bitter pill to swallow.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Athletic’s claim that both Liverpool and Spurs were “strongly against” the takeover suggests some of the Premier League’s established sides were wary of a new competitor arriving on the scene, much like Manchester City and Chelsea have done in recent years.

The traditional ‘big six’ in the top-flight have already seen both Leicester and Wolves in particular try and challenge them in the 2019/2020 season, and having another club seek to break that up would have naturally met with some resistance.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will have new owners at the helm anytime soon now.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Danny Cashman signs new contract at Amex Stadium

Brighton confirmed on their official website on Wednesday that Danny Cashman has signed a new contract at the club.

The Seagulls announced that the teenage striker has signed a new one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months at the Amex Stadium, thus continuing an association with the Seagulls that already stretches back to his arrival at the academy in 2012.

Cashman has yet to make a senior appearance for Brighton but he has made a name for himself in the academy ranks, scoring 15 goals in 70 appearances at under-18 and under-23 levels (as per TransferMarkt). He had a promising return of four goals and seven assists from 12 games in last season’s Premier League 2, highlighting that he is adept at creating chances as well as finishing them.

Simon Rusk, his manager for the Seagulls’ under-23 side, has hailed the 19-year-old as “an intelligent player” with good movement and has urged him to “carry on being difficult for defenders to pick up and mark and to carry on showing that precision in front of goal”. [via brightonandhovealbion.com]

Cashman may already have a role model at the Amex to whom he can realistically aspire – this time last year, Aaron Connolly had only played twice for Brighton’s first team, both in Carabao Cup games, but went on to feature regularly for Graham Potter’s side in the Premier League, making 14 starts and 24 league appearances in total last season.

The Irishman, who is only a year older than the Seagulls academy prospect, scored twice against Tottenham on his full Premier League debut and earned his first caps for his country’s senior team off the back of that performance, highlighting the rewards that are attainable for youngsters who make the most of their chance when given it.

It may seem like a lot to ask Cashman to replicate Connolly’s 2019/20 feats over the coming season, although considering how little experience the Irishman had 12 months ago, a senior bow is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility for the 19-year-old.

Brighton have clearly shown faith in him by offering him a new deal and, having seen Connolly emerge from the shadows to make his mark on the first team in recent months, the Seagulls might just have another young striker on their hands ready to explode into the scene in the near future.

Total Duds: Celtic’s £2.25m deal for Efrain Juarez proved to be a poor signing

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

When Celtic managed to acquire Efrain Juarez from UNAM Pumas in 2010, per Transfermarkt, fans did not know what to expect from the first ever Mexican to play in Scotland. They definitely found a surprise package but not in the ways a club would want and his brief spell at the club highlighted what a failure the signing was.

The right-back made 20 appearances in his first season at the club in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, even managing to pick up two goals along the way. Perhaps the player could have excelled at Paradise, but it was more his antics off the pitch that ruined any chances of a decent spell in Scotland coming to fruition.

Whilst on international duty, (and still playing at Celtic), Juarez broke rules and received a six-match international ban, and the way he broke the rules caused it to be heavily highlighted in the media, leaving the Hoops in an awkward position via FootballScotland.

This whole scenario caused a rift between the player and the club, he never added to his 20 appearances and after a loan stint at Spanish side Real Zaragoza, the player left on a free transfer in 2012, via Transfermarkt, meaning the club lost money on him.

It seems like the player’s attitude ruined any chance of him being a success at the club and the fact he only managed one season there before being shipped out on loan whilst the Celts lost over two million on him highlights that signing him was a total disaster.

Celtic fans, what are your thoughts on Juarez? Comment below!

Arsenal: Sokratis Papastathopoulos keen to stay at the Gunners

Sokratis Papastathopoulos has recently been linked with a move away from Arsenal, but fresh reports suggest that the player will not be going anywhere in the summer.

According to The Telegraph, via Daily Express, the Gunners would be keen to sell him in the transfer window, but the defender does not want to leave the club.

He has no desire to leave Arsenal before the end of his contract and, if he were to leave, his wages would also be a problem for any teams interested, as he is on a reported £92,000 per week.

Sokratis only has one year remaining on his contract, so if the Gunners want to recoup some of the £14.40m that they paid for him, they would have have to sell him this summer. Therefore, the player’s stance is not a very helpful one for manager Mikel Arteta, who is set to be hamstrung by limited finances this summer.

The Greece international has only made one appearance since 18 January due to a combination of injury and being unfancied by Arteta over his other options in the squad, and it seems like he could still struggle to get game-time even if he stays.

This is a very annoying stalemate for Arsenal but hopefully they are either able to offload him this summer or start to utilise him more. If he stays and remains a peripheral figure, the club will be wasting roughly £4.7m on his wages next season until his contract expires.

Gunners fans, are you dismayed that Sokratis is seemingly content to be a bit-part player at Arsenal? Let us know your views below!

Son Heung-min’s Ballon d’Or ranking sees the Tottenham fans react

Son Heung-min placed 22nd in the rankings for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi pipped Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk to the trophy, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane made up the top four.

Son has been in red-hot form for Tottenham Hotspur during the 2019/20 campaign, scoring nine times and contributing eight assists in 18 appearances.

Last season, meanwhile, the attacker managed 20 goals in 48 appearances at club level, and a number of Spurs fans have lavished praise on him following Monday’s announcement.

Many others, though, were disappointed that the South Korea captain was not ranked higher when considering his form at club and indeed international level.

The 27-year-old has scored 26 times in 89 appearances for his country, including three goals in 2019.

One fan even claimed that Son was worthy of a position in the top 10, having also helped Tottenham reach the 2019 Champions League final with four goals in 12 appearances.

The competition was fierce, though, and perhaps Son would have needed to inspire the London club to last season’s European crown in order to stand a chance of making the top 10.

Meanwhile, a number of the club’s supporters were recently delighted with the news surrounding one of their talented youngsters.

Liverpool: Fans shocked at Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho asking price

Liverpool’s interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho has cooled slightly after the German outfit slapped a £127 million asking price on the winger, that is according to Jan Aage Fjortoft.

He also suggests that under no circumstances will the England international be allowed to leave in the January transfer window, with the summer the earliest that a move will become possible.

Sancho has been linked with Liverpool for a few weeks now, since Fjortoft claimed that sources in Germany had told him that the Reds were favourites to sign the 19-year-old.

The former Manchester City man has been on fire recently, netting six goals and providing four assists in his last five Bundesliga appearances (Transfermarkt).

However despite that excellent form, many Liverpool fans feel that his alleged £127 million price tag is far too high and therefore don’t believe that they will be signing him any time soon.

Here is what some have been saying about it on Twitter…

Mark Noble’s West Ham return could block Jack Wilshere’s route into the team

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Injury News series, which considers the impact of the latest updates on players’ fitness.

Mark Noble could still be available to play for West Ham United against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as reported by Football Insider.

What’s the story?

The Hammers captain was forced off after just 20 minutes of their 3-0 loss against Burnley, having picked up an ankle injury.

He has been helped out by the international break coming around, but it was still uncertain whether he would be able to make it back in time to face bitter rivals Spurs.

[ad_pod ]

Football Insider have claimed that the 32-year-old has been recovering well from what turned out to be a sprain, meaning he has a good chance of being able to make it onto the pitch this weekend.

This follows a report from Claret & Hugh that claimed if Noble didn’t make it, Wilshere would likely be chosen to partner Declan Rice in the Hammers’ midfield.

A blocked route

This news indicates that Wilshere could, once again, have his route to first-team football blocked.

The 27-year-old has only managed 2 Premier League starts and 4 substitute appearances in the Premier League this campaign – it is revealing that he has made an equal number of starts in the Carabao Cup.

Both of his league starts came in the opening two fixtures, which will likely add to any sense of frustration currently being felt due to the minimal amount of minutes he has had.

His lack of game time follows a campaign in which he managed just 4 league starts and 4 appearances off the bench all season, though that was largely down to the fact that he missed 193 days through two separate injuries.

This latest development could mean that the 34-cap England international will be forced to continue waiting for his opportunity to prove himself in the Hammers’ midfield.

Newcastle’s stance on Dwight Gayle is incredibly puzzling

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

“He can knuckle down now and fight for his place,” were the words muttered by Steve Bruce when discussing Dwight Gayle over a month ago.

However, fast forward to a period where we’re now close to December and that chance hasn’t been granted.

Gayle has been frozen out and neglected at St James’ Park in 2019/20. Given his prior record in the Premier League it’s perhaps unsurprising that’s been the case.

In 102 top-flight matches he’s only bagged 21 goals. Compare that to his tally in the Championship and he’s scored 38 more in two fewer outings.

So far this term, Gayle has been limited to just 22 minutes. It’s a huge worry for a player who Bruce says he’s delighted to have at the club.

Take a trip down memory lane to a time when Newcastle were giants on the European stage in the video below…

However, that statement is puzzling and the stance that’s been utilised towards the £13.5m-rated forward is even more bewildering.

You can forgive early-season neglect because Joelinton was signed for a colossal £40m in the summer. To put it simply, when a fee that high is thrown at a player it’s difficult to place him on the bench.

But since entering English football, the powerful striker has scored just once. Gayle may have a shoddy record at this level but after netting 24 times for West Brom last term, he deserves more of a chance than he’s been afforded.

If you consider the bigger picture, he is unlikely to play any worse than the man ahead of him in the pecking order.

Joelinton isn’t the sole issue for Gayle, though. In fact, Andy Carroll has become second choice for Bruce and when the Magpies needed a goal on Monday against Aston Villa, he was turned to first.

It was a damning statement from the Newcastle boss as Gayle eventually came on but registered just four touches in 18 minutes.

That points to a man devoid of any confidence, which is hardly surprising given his lack of football this season.

It’s easy to suggest someone could improve a team’s fortunes but in this instance, Gayle certainly wouldn’t harm their chances. Linked with a move away from the Toon, Newcastle could benefit from handing him a proper chance before letting him leave again.

After all, Carroll is yet to score this season either.

Man Utd must avoid complacency when facing a goal-shy Bournemouth

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Well, that was a quick turnaround wasn’t it? Having opened the campaign in miserable fashion, including a truly shocking 2-0 defeat at Newcastle, Manchester United appear to have turned the proverbial corner.

The Red Devils’ sharp revival got kick-started with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool, before securing three consecutive away wins against Partizan Belgrade, Norwich and Chelsea, in impressive fashion. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are once again on their travels when they take on Bournemouth on Saturday, and judging by the form book, this looks like another banker for a victory.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

Whilst the Manchester side have bounced back in fine fettle, their opposition have floundered in recent weeks. Since beating rivals Southampton 3-1 at St Mary’s, Eddie Howe’s men have suffered a sharp drop in form – and quite significantly, goals. They have failed to hit the back of the net in four out of their last five games, including going scoreless in their previous three.

That despite them boasting the likes of Callum Wilson, Josh King and Dominic Solanke as their forward options. So when United take to the field on Saturday afternoon, they will no doubt be licking their lips of claiming another priceless win in the league. And that is exactly the kind of frame of mind Solskjaer has to absolutely ensure doesn’t creep in.

Confidence is a great thing in small, measured doses. But if it spills over into arrogance, then you’ve got a huge problem. For all their recent run of form, it has only been four games. And that too, only over the space of a week or so. The sense of excitement could quickly be shattered if they fail to maintain their composure and work ethic when they take on Bournemouth.

Make no mistake about it, however bad things get at United, they will always remain a prized scalp for the opposition. And if they get overly complacent against the Cherries on Saturday simply because of both sides’ recent form, then they will get brought back down to Earth with a heavy thud.
