Everton: Thelwell Plotting Ambitious Late Move For Own Declan Rice

Everton are hoping to strengthen to the max before the transfer deadline tonight, with manager Sean Dyche desperate to combat the woeful start to the Premier League campaign.

What's the latest on Kalvin Phillips to Everton?

According to i news, the Toffees are working on multiple deals and while the focus is on signing an attacking flanker, a deal for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is believed to be in the pipeline as an ambitious signing for director of football Kevin Thelwell.

Everton are struggling to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) after completing the £30m signing of centre-forward Beto earlier this week, but could now swoop for Phillips as the England international is looking for regular first-team football, with the Citizens willing to let him leave on loan.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

The Merseyside outfit have not yet touched the midfield this summer, instead focusing on reassembling the offence, but appeared tempted by the proposition of the £150k-per-week enforcer catalysing the centre.

How good is Kalvin Phillips?

Dynamic attackers Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison have arrived on loan, whilst Beto's acquisition has been complemented by a £15m deal for teenage striker Youssef Chermiti, but the club would be wise to bolster the midfield today if possible.

The indication is that Everton are hoping for an electric-paced end to the window, and while the emphasis is fixed on signing a winger, Phillips' availability might be too enticing to ignore.

The Goodison Park side have lost all three of their opening Premier League matches of the campaign, failing to score across each fixture, and Phillips could be signed as a new engine to send shockwaves of positive impact throughout the team.

Before his £45m transfer to Manchester City – where injuries and superlative talent in the squad restricted him to just two Premier League starts all term – he thrived for Leeds United and spearheaded an ascent from the Championship to a ninth-placed finish in the top-flight.

During that 2020/21 season, the 27-cap international earned an impressive average score of 7.21 – as per Sofascore – completing 85% of his passes, averaging 1.2 key passes 2.6 tackles per game, with former Whites boss Neil Redfearn hailing him as an "expert deep-lying midfielder".

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Given his elite range of midfield abilities, Everton could wield their own version of Declan Rice by securing a remarkable deal for the 27-year-old "monster" – as once lauded by Yannick Bolasie, with Redfearn also once saying that Arsenal's £105m man is "no better" than his Sky Blue counterpart.

Rice is unquestionably one of European football's best midfielders, described as "world-class" by manager Danny Cowley, and had been instrumental for West Ham United over the past several years, making 245 appearances for David Moyes' outfit in a rise to coincide with the club's, winning the Europa Conference League on his final showing.

He also ranks within the top 5% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions per 90 and within the top 20% for pass completion, progressive passes and progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

While Rice is one of football's foremost midfielders, Phillips has demonstrated at England's highest level his ability to perform as an all-encompassing midfield force, so Thelwell could transform Everton's season by signing the former Leeds sensation in a statement of intent by tonight's 11pm deadline.

Tom Sole sinks Hong Kong with 4 for 15

The offspinner restricted Hong Kong to just 91, and then the Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer led his side to their second win in two matches

Liam Brickhill in Bulawayo06-Mar-2018
Four wickets from offspinner Tom Sole helped Scotland to four-wicket win over Hong Kong at the Bulawayo Athletic Club. Sole’s 4 for 15 in ten overs restricted Hong Kong to just 91, and captain Kyle Coetzer then took his side to their second win in two matches with an unbeaten 41, though Scotland made heavy weather of the small target. After Mark Watt and Alasdair Evans made early incisions for Scotland, Sole eviscerated the middle order and apart from the opening stand there was no partnership of substance to steady Hong Kong. The damage started with Sole’s first delivery, which rushed on with the arm from around the wicket to pin Anshuman Rath lbw. In the same over, Scott McKechnie misjudged the line of an off stump delivery, the ball rushing through his defences to hit the stumps. From 46 for 0, Hong Kong had slipped to 52 for 4.Things were about to get worse for Hong Kong. Immediately after the drinks break, their captain Babar Hayat skipped down the track to Sole, but didn’t get close to the pitch of the delivery. The ball spun sharply in to him, taking the inside edge and looping up via the left pad to be easily caught by Craig Wallace at short leg.Hong Kong’s lower middle order appeared incapable of digging them out of the hole. Singles were hard to come by, while every attacking stroke seemed to bring a wicket. With an in-out field, Scotland cut off singles in the inner ring and left a couple of outfielders in place for the lofted stroke. The tactic soon paid dividends when Safyaan Sharif’s pace rushed Shahid Wasif’s pull shot, the ball looping tamely off the splice to be caught by Brad Wheal at midwicket. Hong Kong were 61 for 6 then, and that soon became 67 for 7 when Waqas Barkat charged down the track and swished airily at Sole to give the offspinner his fourth wicket.Tanwir Afzal scratched around for 29 deliveries, and then he too fell to a mistimed pull – his first shot in anger. After Watt bowled Ehsan Nawaz for his second wicket, Evans returned to have Nadeem Ahmed caught at second slip to wrap up the innings for 91.Coetzer led Scotland’s chase with aplomb. Weathering a bristling opening spell from Nawaz that brought the wickets of Matthew Cross and the hero of Scotland’s opening win over Afghanistan, Calum MacLeod, Coetzer attacked Hong Kong’s spinners. Nadeem Ahmed was swatted over long off for six and down the ground for four more.George Munsey pressed Scotland towards their target, pushing his luck with an edged stroke and a couple of reverse sweeps at Ehsan Khan before the offspinner got his revenge with a quicker one that trapped the left hander lbw. Khan bowled a sweeping Craig Wallacefor his third wicket, and Hong Kong then placed a short leg and two slips for the offspinner.Watt laced a cut behind point to get Scotland within touching distance of the win, but he then top-edged an attacking stroke to be caught by Nizakat Khan off Aizaz Khan’s medium pace. Scotland were six down then, but Sharif sealed the result with a flicked boundary off his legs.

Everton have real "interest" in signing 25-year-old star

Everton have already added some options in the final third this summer but the business may not be finished there. Journalist Paul Brown has spoken to GIVEMESPORT about the potential of landing a new attacking player from Serie A.

Could this signing make all the difference to Everton?

Everton to date have signed three attacking players to make up for the plight they endured in front of goal last season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been dealt with a rough run of injuries, including issues with his hamstring and knee in 2022/23, leaving the Toffees low on options for players to contribute going forward.

As a result, the trio of Jack Harrison, Arnaut Danjuma and Youssef Chermiti have been brought in by Sean Dyche and co to steer Everton away from another relegation battle.

Harrison arrived on loan from Leeds United, Danjuma joined from Villarreal for the season after struggling to make an impact with Tottenham Hotspur last term and finally, 19-year-old Chermiti was bought from Sporting CP for just over £10 million.

The latest name being linked with Everton is Udinese forward Beto. In the last two league campaigns in Serie A he has hit double digits for goals, a feat he also achieved in his only full season with Portimonense.

At 6 foot 4 inches, Beto’s size could cause issues for a lot of Premier League defences and pose a similar threat to Calvert-Lewin, with the Englishman regularly sidelined with injuries.

Football Insider reported on the interest of Everton in the 25-year-old from Udinese and the fee to secure this deal would be in the region of £26 million, more than double what they have already spent on bringing Chermiti in.

What has Paul Brown had to say?

Journalist Paul Brown has given his opinion to GIVEMESPORT about the links between Everton and Udinese forward Beto.

"I haven't seen enough of Beto to know whether he's the right option for Everton, but I don't think talks are very advanced there.

"I know there's an interest but there's been an interest in several strikers around Europe, so how likely it is for this one to happen, I'm not sure yet. We will have to wait and see."

What else is going on at Everton?

As previously mentioned, the Toffees have been fairly busy this window already as they look to build a squad that can steer them away from any potential relegation battle.

Dyche may go back to Leeds for his transfer targets to follow up on the arrival of Harrison with a potential bid for the young Italian Wilfried Gnonto. He has been vocal about his desire to depart Elland Road following their relegation to the Championship and Jacque Talbot is reporting that a Goodison Park move is what he is pushing for.

Meanwhile, another goalkeeper could be brought to Merseyside in the form of Alex McCarthy. As per Jack Rosser, he may be allowed to leave Southampton on a free transfer due to his wages after they of course suffered relegation too.

Everton aren’t allow in their pursuit of the Saints shot-stopper though with Crystal Palace also monitoring the situation.

SL need two wins against India for direct World Cup entry

Two wins for Sri Lanka will leave West Indies outside the top eight even if they win their remaining six matches before the September 30 cut-off

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2017Sri Lanka, currently ranked eighth in ODIs with 88 points, can secure direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup if they win at least two matches in the upcoming five-ODI series against India, starting August 20 in Dambulla.Winning two games will push Sri Lanka’s tally to 90 while West Indies, currently placed ninth with 78 points, can at best reach 88 even if they win their six remaining ODIs – one against Ireland and five against England – before the September 30 cut-off. The top seven sides along with hosts England gain direction qualification for the tournament. If Sri Lanka manage to win only one match in the series, however, West Indies could pip them on decimal points, provided they win each of their upcoming six ODIs. A loss against Ireland would rule West Indies out of direct qualification, even if Sri Lanka get whitewashed by India.Sri Lanka’s recent form at home isn’t encouraging: they lost 3-2 to 11th-ranked Zimbabwe last month. They have, in fact, lost seven of their last 10 completed ODIs at home.West Indies’ ODI form isn’t encouraging either: in the last five years, and among Full Members, their average of 27.20 and run-rate of 5.10 are only better than Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Man Utd Could Land Their Own Werner In £43m-rated Ace

There has been an update regarding Manchester United's pursuit of Atalanta striker, Rasmus Hojlund, as manager Erik ten Hag steps up his search for a new centre-forward…

What's the latest on Hojlund to Man United?

According to one source, the Red Devils are said to have reached a "total agreement" for the signing of the Denmark international – as well as Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat – having already secured moves for Mason Mount and Andre Onana this summer.

It is not made clear as to whether that 'agreement' relates to personal terms as well as a transfer fee, with recent reports having claimed that United are unwilling to go above £60m in their quest to land the 20-year-old marksman.

The former Sturm Graz ace – who has been valued at around €50m (£43m) by CIES Football Observatory – has emerged as the leading centre-forward target for the Old Trafford outfit, despite recent whispers that the club are still "circling" in the hope of landing Harry Kane, according to journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

Would Hojlund be a good signing for Man United?

Unlike Kane – who netted 30 Premier League goals last season to take his total tally in the competition to 213 – Hojlund is a far less proven option to lead the line for Ten Hag next season, having scored just nine Serie A goals last season.

Although still seemingly a "remarkable" talent who has "very similar characteristics to [Erling] Haaland", according to manager Gian Piero Gasperini, the emerging gem does only boast 27 club career goals to date, making him a potentially expensive gamble as far as United are concerned.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

There may also be worries over the Dane's apparent likeness to former Chelsea flop, Timo Werner, with the pair noted as similar players due to their recent statistical record, according to FBref.

The two men are notably alike due to their reliance on their speed to hurt the opposition, with Werner "someone who can devastate with his pace" – according to talkSPORT's Tony Cascarino – while Hojlund has been branded as "scary quick" by journalist, Sacha Pisani.

That desire to utilise their explosive speed is shown by the fact that the latter man ranks in the top 1% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive passes received, as he regularly looks to get in behind, while his striking counterpart ranks in the top 5% in that regard.

As Werner found out during his time at Stamford Bridge, however, a striker will need more to his game if he is to make the grade in the Premier League, with the German dud having notably been rather "erratic" for the Blues, according to pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

The RB Leipzig man – who is in his second spell at the club – was snapped up by then-boss Frank Lampard on a £45m deal in the summer of 2020 after netting 28 Bundesliga goals the year prior for his former employers, although the 27-year-old went on to score just ten league goals during his two-year stint in west London.

As United legend Rio Ferdinand said at the time, the Stuttgart native was often "too loose in possession" when leading the line, with it then somewhat concerning that Hojlund's average pass completion rate of 73.1% is actually lower than that of Werner (74.6%), across the last 365 days,

Having seen the dour nature of the latter man's time at Chelsea, United supporters will certainly not want the Old Trafford hierarchy to endure a repeat scenario with the signing of Hojlund.
