Shikhar Dhawan picks up shoulder injury, doesn't open for India

India are yet to take a call on Shikhar Dhawan after he left the field clutching his left shoulder during the ODI series decider against Australia in Bengaluru on Sunday.Dhawan fell on his left shoulder in the fifth over of the match as he dived to stop an Aaron Finch drive at cover point. Nitin Patel, the team physio who attended to him, took him off the field.Dhawan was immediately sent for an X-ray. When he returned to India’s dressing room, he was seen with his left arm in a sling. Virat Kohli said at the post-match press conference that Dhawan was in “no position to strike the ball.”A BCCI spokesperson said reports of Dhawan’s scans had been received by the physio and “he will be assessed overnight, before a final update of his injury will be issued”.KL Rahul, who made a match-winning 52-ball 80 from No. 5 in the second ODI in Rajkot, opened instead of Dhawan. His partner Rohit Sharma, incidentally, had also bruised his shoulder while fielding during the Rajkot ODI and was a doubt for the Bengaluru game.In the same game, Dhawan had bruised his ribcage after trying to negate a Pat Cummins delivery, but continued to bat on and make 96 in India’s series-levelling victory. He spent the entire duration of the Australia innings off the field to take care of the injury.Dhawan has hit a purple patch in recent times, scoring 52, 74 and 96 in his three most recent international innings. In November, he picked up a freak injury – “a deep cut on his left knee” – during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 game for Delhi against Maharashtra. Originally picked for the series against West Indies, he was later withdrawn as the medical staff felt he needed more time for his stitches to come off and the wound to heal.As things stand, Dhawan is part of India’s T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand starting January 24. India are set to fly out of Bengaluru early on Monday to Auckland via Singapore.

Anisa Mohammed's last-ball strike gives West Indies women one-run win

India women lost their last eight wickets for 54 runs to squander the advantage

With India women needing nine off the last over with two wickets in hand, West Indies women offspinner Anisa Mohammed plucked both wickets, including one off the last ball, to give the home side a one-run win in the series opener in North Sound. During her fifth five-wicket haul in ODI cricket, Mohammed also passed 150 wickets to put West Indies women 1-0 up in dramatic fashion.Stafanie Taylor was also central to the victory, following up her 94 off 91 balls with the wickets of Jemimah Rodrigues and Shikha Pandey to finish with figures of 2 for 30 in her ten overs. Taylor was motoring towards her sixth ODI ton, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s blinding one-handed catch at the edge of the boundary denied her the milestone.Taylor and opener Natasha McLean provided the platform for West Indies’ innings by making half-centuries. While McLean (51 off 82 balls) was more sedate, Taylor struck eight fours and two sixes and scored at a strike rate of 103.29. McLean’s wicket was part of West Indies’ wobble – they went from 51 for no loss to 77 for 3 – but Taylor and the returning Chedean Nation put on a 78-run stand to take their side close to 200. Although the lower order couldn’t quite land the big blows, they passed that mark comfortably enough. Seamer Pandey and offspinner Deepti Sharma picked up two wickets each for India women. In their chase, India had a positive start with Priya Punia and Rodrigues putting on 78 for the opening stand. By the 40th over, they were well-placed at 170 for 2, but Puniya’s dismissal for 75 off 107 balls triggered a terminal slide. India lost their last eight wickets for 54 runs and were edged out.Punia’s second fifty in only her fourth ODI, however, might come as a pleasant headache for India women because Smriti Mandhana, the side’s first-choice opener and vice-captain, is set to join the squad in the Caribbean ahead of the second match on November 3.

Darren Bravo dropped from Tests; Alzarri Joseph replaces injured Shannon Gabriel

The newly-picked West Indies selection panel has dropped Darren Bravo for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan in India next month. With Shannon Gabriel injured, his place was taken by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph who proved his fitness in the CPL recently.

Changes to West Indies’ Test squad

IN: Alzarri Joseph, Shane Dowrich, Sunil Ambris, Jomel Warrican
OUT: Darren Bravo, Shannon Gabriel, Jahmar Hamilton

Shai Hope, who had sustained a finger injury during the Tests against India, was picked too – including in the ODI squad – having proved his fitness in Barbados Tridents’ run to the CPL title.Bravo was dropped after managing a mere 47 runs in four innings at an average of 15.66 against India. His form hardly improved in the CPL thereafter, with 128 runs in seven innings, striking at 103.22, and only one half-century. Gabriel’s recent form against India wasn’t impressive either. He claimed just four wickets in the two Tests and averaged as much as 56.50 with a strike rate of 99. He then went to the UK last month to play county cricket for Gloucestershire, and took only two wickets in three innings there, with figures of 0 for 39, 2 for 20 and 0 for 121.Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton, who made his Test debut in the second game against India, was also left out of the Test squad. He got the chance against India after injuries to both Hope and Shane Dowrich, but with both fit to travel to India, there was no place for Hamilton this time.Joseph, who returned to the CPL after an injury layoff, was picked for all three formats. He is yet to make his T20 international debut. He had injured his right arm while playing for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL in April and returned to the field after nearly five months to represent St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL recently. He played nine matches to pick as many wickets and ended with an impressive economy rate of 7.75.Apart from Joseph’s return, the selectors picked left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican and top-order batsman Sunil Ambris. Both Warrican and Ambris last played a Test in November 2018 against Bangladesh. While Ambris struck some form against India A recently in both four-day matches and one-dayers, Warricon impressed more while playing for Barbados in the domestic first-class competition at the beginning of the year. The lone Test will be played after the T20Is and ODIs, starting November 27 in Dehradun.Test squad: Jason Holder (capt), Shai Hope, John Campbell, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shimron Hetmyer, Shamrah Brooks, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Sunil Ambris, Jomel Warrican, Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Keemo Paul, Alzarri Joseph

Newcastle and PIF keen to sign 25 y/o player who Eddie Howe loves for free

Newcastle United are interested in signing an "incredible" player who Eddie Howe admires this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are now looking at players who could come in at the end of the season, with numerous individuals linked with moves to the club recently. Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been backed to seal a switch to St James' Park, bringing a box-to-box presence to the team, as they look to "snatch" him away from his current club.

Exciting young Leeds United starlet Archie Gray is also considered an option for Newcastle, with the teenager wanted by a host of different top clubs.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana continues to look like a primary target, too, and the most recent update regarding the Magpies' interest in him suggests that they are in pole position to get their man.

Newcastle want Lloyd Kelly

According to a new update from The Daily Mail, Newcastle and PIF are also keen on signing Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly in the summer transfer window, snapping him up for free in the process.

"Newcastle United are weighing up a summer deal for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly. The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season and is emerging as one of the most sought-after free agents of the summer. Kelly has put in a string of strong performances for Andoni Iraola's side so far this season, and has been courted by clubs both domestically and abroad.

"Newcastle were hampered by financial restrictions in January but will be free to buy again from July and are also assessing the market to see what bargains are available. Kelly fits that profile and is well known by manager Eddie Howe from his time in charge at Bournemouth."

It certainly looks as though Newcastle are genuinely interested in Kelly. This season, he has added 2.3 clearances per game across 13 Premier League appearances. The fact that Howe knows him so well as a player, and clearly rates him, is an immediate bonus, with the Magpies boss blown away with Kelly during his time at Bournemouth.

“Yeah, I think one of the great things about Lloyd when I first met him – I was blown away by how mature he was. How much mental capacity he had to want to improve and learn and to become the very best player that he can be."

Meanwhile, his ability to thrive as both a centre-back and a left-back could add extra depth defensively. At 25, he is still relatively young and can get better, and former Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil had this to say about him last year:

"I thought Lloyd was incredible. Didn't have much time in between, and then came back today having not trained much, to play left back against one of the best wingers in the world. I thought he showed everything, the potential he has to be a top defender. I thought it was a very, very impressive performance against a top attacker.”I think he had a 12-week ankle injury followed by a six-week calf injury."

Worth £23m: Newcastle now looking to "snatch" box-to-box maestro

This could be a fantastic signing for Eddie Howe.

Kelly arriving on a free transfer also acts as a plus point, meaning if the move didn't work out it wouldn't have been a big financial risk, but there is no reason why he couldn't be a real success in a Magpies shirt.

Arsenal table bid for in-form striker who Brentford wanted to replace Toney

Arsenal have apparently made an offer to sign an in-form striker who Brentford wanted to replace Ivan Toney with.

Arsenal in need of new striker

For the past few months, widespread reports have claimed that Arsenal are keen on signing a new number nine to gift manager Mikel Arteta more attacking options and a goal-scoring outlet.

The Gunners have just Gabriel Jesus, who's now returned to training after a minor knee injury, and Eddie Nketiah to select from as their natural options.

This was made evident in their 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Liverpool last weekend, with Arteta's side spurning a host of great chances that evening in what was a frustrating loss at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have been urged to sign a new striker in January by huge figures with ties to the club, like midfield legend and pundit Ray Parlour.

“Where they are going to be lacking is the striker position," said Parlour to TEAMtalk late last year.

"In teams I played in we had four top strikers so I think that is one area they need to improve. I know Jesus is out at the moment and Nketiah did brilliantly getting his hat-trick at the weekend but there is not a lot of options up front.

“I am sure Arteta, if there is someone available whether on loan or someone who is not playing on a regular basis but who he knows can do a decent job, will be looking for options. When you are chasing a goal you have got to change it up front and they do not have that at the moment."

One player they've been repeatedly linked with to strengthen their centre-forward ranks is Brentford star Toney, who is said to be keen on making the move to Arsenal.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

However, Bees boss Thomas Frank recently poured cold water on the chances of Toney leaving for north London this window, unless they submitted an "unbelievable" offer.

Sporting director Edu and the recruitment team are also playing with a slightly more limited January budget after spending over £200 million last summer, so they may have to be clever.

Arsenal submit Borja Mayoral bid

Indeed, according to The Sun, it appears they're going for much cheaper alternatives to Toney, leading to their interest in Getafe striker Borja Mayoral.

Arsenal have apparently submitted a £22 million bid to sign Mayoral in January. Getafe, though, aren't keen to sell their star man unless they get around £39 million.

Interestingly, it is believed Brentford were tipped to be eyeing Mayoral as a possible replacement for Toney, as per the report.

The Spaniard has netted 12 goals in just 19 La Liga appearances this term, leaving little wonder his club are holding out for a larger fee. Mayoral does come as an interesting option, with members of the press calling him "top level" (Pedro Gonzalez).

Pakistan captain, coach throw their weight behind 'incredible' Shoaib Malik

The senior allrounder, in his last campaign for the national team, has been poor with the bat and just about handy with the ball so far

Osman Samiuddin in Manchester15-Jun-2019Shoaib Malik will be in Pakistan’s XI in their game against India at Old Trafford on Sunday. Malik’s participation in the game has been the subject of some speculation after a series of poor returns in the World Cup, but in a rare public show of faith, both Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mickey Arthur have confirmed that he will play.Malik has played in two of Pakistan’s games in this campaign, making 8 and 0 against England and Australia. Those numbers are part of a longer run of low returns since the start of 2018 – averaging 26 across 29 games, with just three fifties and a strike rate under 80. And those, in turn, are part of an even longer history of poor scores in England: in 28 ODIs since 2001, he averages 13.57, the lowest by any visiting batsman with a minimum of 20 innings in the country. He had a poor game in the field against Australia, though his seven overs across the two games have come in handy. But since then, Sarfaraz has backed him in a column written for the PCB website and, on Saturday, Arthur all but confirmed he would play.ALSO READ: The meaning of India-Pakistan, for India and for Pakistan”I can tell you a guy that’s played over 200 ODIs, tomorrow presents a real opportunity for him,” Arthur said. “As far as I’m concerned, Shoaib Malik didn’t play the West Indies game because of balance. He batted in the last three overs against England and failed against Australia.”So to say he’s failed, there’s not much of a barometer just yet. That will be determined over the next couple of games. What I do know is Shoaib Malik brings a hell of a lot to our dressing room. He is an incredible team man. He has incredible skills, and I’m hoping that, on the biggest stage tomorrow, those skills come to the fore.”There was a time in Malik’s career, across the middle of the poor returns, when his record against India stood out. But it has been nearly a decade since his Champions Trophy hundred against them at Centurion and, in limited opportunities since, he averages just 33 against them, with a solitary fifty. That’s worth noting because Pakistan still seem to believe that his performances against India hold relevance for Sunday. That and his experience.”Let’s not forget – I mentioned it in one of the previous questions – that is still a fairly young cricket team,” Arthur said. “Shoaib Malik’s experience, Mohammad Hafeez’s experience tomorrow will go a long way out in the middle to help these young boys through it.”Malik, 37, has already said that he will be retiring from ODI cricket after this World Cup.

Man Utd lead £43m transfer race for "incredible" Giorgio Scalvini – report

For Manchester United, the biggest signing of the 2023 summer transfer window – going by the fee at least – was Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker cost United £72m, one of the top ten most expensive outlays in their history and the second-biggest of the Erik ten Hag era after the £82m deal for Antony a year earlier.

Hojlund has made a slow start for the Red Devils, scoring just one goal in his first 15 Premier League appearances (a late winner against Aston Villa last month), but he fared better in Europe, where he bagged five in six before United's early Champions League exit. Still, time is on the 20-year-old's side, and the early teething problems haven't put the club off knocking on Atalanta's door again over another young talent.

Man Utd ahead of Bayern and PSG for Scalvini

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, United are leading the race to sign Giorgio Scalvini from La Dea. Ten Hag's side have been watching him for "several months", as have Bayern Munich, while PSG have also shortlisted him as one of three possible centre-back signings. The competition is fierce, then, but United is "ahead" as it stands.

Atalanta are coming under "more and more pressure" to sell the defender and accept that "it will be difficult" to keep hold of Scalvini, but that doesn't mean it will be "easy" to get him out of Bergamo during the January transfer window. They're already set out their demands of around £43m.

Scalvini is "destined for greatness"

20-year-old Scalvini has been with Atalanta since 2015, when he first joined from Brescia, and he's already made 78 senior appearances for his club, including 23 this season. Despite his youth, he's a key player for Gian Piero Gasperini, who's started him in 16 of his side's 19 Serie A matches so far.

Capped seven times by Italy too, he ranks fifth in the league for blocks (30), second for interceptions (35) and eighth for aerial duels won (50), which highlights his astute positioning and strong athletic attributes. Crucially, he's gifted on the ball too, sitting second in the division for take-on success (81.8%). That suggests he'll be able to cope well under a high press from Premier League forwards.

Scalvini finished in the top ten in the voting for the 2023 Golden Boy award, given to the best under-21 player in Europe. Only two defenders – Benfica's Antonio Silva and Barcelona's Alejandro Balde – finished ahead of him, and he was also named the best young Italian player at the ceremony.

As such, Serie A podcaster and football writer Danny Corcoran is certainly justified in calling him an "incredible defender", and you can see why Gasperini has declared that "he's destined for greatness". £43m isn't cheap, of course, but it's a fee that Scalvini could easily pay back, and the beauty of this signing is that it wouldn't just be a long-term move – he's shown in Serie A this season that he's ready to thrive at the highest level.

Approach made: Man Utd make move to sign "insane" star at top of his game

Manchester United have made contact to sign a new in-demand attacker in 2024, according to a recent update from one journalist.

Man Utd top scorers

The Red Devils have been struggling in front of goal so far this season, with Erik ten Hag’s side scoring just 16 times in 13 Premier League fixtures – the fewest out of the top 12 clubs in the division. Summer signing Rasmus Hojlund is still yet to get off the market in the league, with just three players scoring more than once in the top flight.

As a result, it looks as if more firepower could be needed in the final third at Old Trafford, which has seemingly resulted in the club’s interest in Serhou Guirassy.

According to journalist Santi Aouna, the Red Devils have made an approach over a possible deal for Guirassy, although AS Roma, AC Milan and Newcastle United are also keen on the forward who has a €17.5m (£15m) release clause.

“Serhou Guirassy is on the list of MU for winter‼️ MUFC has already inquired about him. No offer or negotiations yet. AS Roma, AC Milan and Newcastle are showing interest in 27 year old striker. Release clause: €17.5m and already active.”

Serhou Guirassy profiled

Guirassy made the permanent move to VfB Stuttgart in the summer following a successful loan and has been at the top of his game during the current campaign, which has resulted in his Transfermarkt valuation rocketing to a career-high €40m.

The Guinea international has scored an impressive 16 goals and has provided two assists in just 11 games in all competitions this season, taking his tally to 34 goal contributions in 39 games for the Bundesliga side. (Serhou Guirassy stats – Transfermarkt)

Therefore, you can see why a number of clubs are looking at a deal for the striker considering his £15m release clause, and Guirassy could provide the perfect foil for the likes of Hojlund and Marcus Rashford in Manchester. As claimed in a player analysis by Breaking the Lines, Guirassy could yet get even better with age:

“The lineage of strikers in European football who are late bloomers is rich in names. Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Gonzalo Higuain, Dimitar Berbatov and Ciro Immobile are to name a few. At 27, Guirassy’s best days are ahead of him yet.”

Hailed as “insane” by scout Antonio Mango for his form this season, Guirassy has plenty of experience in both Germany and France, so a move to either England or Italy looks like it could be on to watch next month.
