Wellington equals her own WBBL record to spin Strikers to victory

Adelaide Strikers 2 for 102 (Dottin 55) beat Melbourne Renegades 101 (Wellington 5-8)Adelaide Strikers legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington has equalled her own record for the WBBL’s best bowling figures in an eight-wicket win against the Melbourne Renegades.Wellington claimed 5 for 8 at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval – the same competition-best figures she recorded against Brisbane Heat in November last year.Wellington’s stunning return came as the Renegades were bowled out for 101 in 19.5 overs. She took three of her wickets in a four-ball span as Strikers banked a second victory from four games this tournament. Renegades remain in the mire with just one win from their four matches.Only two Renegades batters reached double-figures – Carly Leeson top-scored with 35 from 33 balls and Courtney Webb made 29 from 37 balls. The pair featured in a 51-run partnership for the fifth wicket after the visitors crashed to 4 for 21 in the sixth over.Leeson and Webb’s stand took the Renegades to 5 for 73 but after their fruitful partnership the Renegades’ last five wickets fell for only eight runs as Wellington cleaned up.The star leggie was on a hat-trick in the final over of the innings after stumpings on consecutive balls dismissed Georgia Prestwidge and Ella Hayward.Shabnim Ismail survived the hat-trick ball but was out on the next delivery to cap Wellington’s superb 3.5 overs.Strikers then made light work of their run chase with their West Indian signing Deandra Dottin top-scoring with an unbeaten 55 – she belted two sixes and four fours in her 55-ball knock.Dottin opened the innings and after the early loss of partner Katie Mack put on a 45-run stand with Laura Wolvaardt.

Not just Rashford: Man Utd must sell a dud who earns more than Fernandes

Manchester United are in desperate need of action within the first-team squad, whether that be with incomings or outgoings before the end of the month.

Ruben Amorim has been on the hunt for a new striker in recent weeks but is yet to agree a deal for a new talisman to follow in the footsteps of Viktor Gyokeres after his time under the 39-year-old at Sporting CP.

Randal Kolo Muani has been the player most linked with a move to Old Trafford since the opening of the window, but no deal has yet to be agreed for the French international.

Randal Kolo Muani for PSG

Outgoings are also to be expected as the new boss looks to make his own mark on the playing squad, potentially offloading some of Erik ten Hag’s signings who have failed to impress.

The same can’t be said for one pair, who have undoubtedly been the shining lights of Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford during his first few months at the helm.

The star men for United since Amorim arrived

Amad Diallo was a player brought back into the fold following Amorim’s appointment after being left out in the cold by former boss Ten Hag – often only utilised as an impact player.

However, the Ivorian has become a regular starter in recent weeks, taking full advantage of his increased game time, subsequently starring at the top end of the pitch for the Red Devils.

The 22-year-old has registered three goals and five assists in his last 12 outings, with his most crucial striker undoubtedly coming in the Manchester derby, scoring the winning goal against Pep Guardiola’s side.

As for Bruno Fernandes, he was a key member of the Dutchman’s side during his own tenure in the North West, but has taken his performances to the next level after the arrival of his compatriot.

United’s captain has made the same number of appearances as Amad, registering one fewer goal contribution – notching seven, including the strike in the last outing against Arsenal in their FA Cup triumph.

However, one other player looks set for the exit door after failing to replicate the aforementioned stats in taking their game to the next level under the new management.

The player who Man Utd need to sell in January

Marcus Rashford is one player who is almost certain to leave his boyhood club in the next few weeks, after seemingly not being a part of Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford.

The Englishman hasn’t featured since the victory over Viktoria Plzen back at the start of December, a real surprise given his run of three goals in just two league matches after the arrival of Amorim.

He’s since been touted with moves to Borussia Dortmund, West Ham United and Napoli, but still looks most likely to swap Manchester for Milan – with AC Milan currently the favourites for his signature.

However, Rashford shouldn’t be the only one to depart the Theatre of Dreams this month, with the hierarchy desperately needing to get Brazilian midfielder Casemiro off the wage bill.

The 32-year-old cost the club £70m back in the summer of 2022, but has been a disaster of a signing, only making six appearances since the new boss took charge.

His performance against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup was his last, looking way too slow for the demands of a top-level talent, often being out ran and bypassed in the middle of the park.

Casemiro certainly isn’t worthy of a first-team role at Old Trafford, nor is he deserving of his bonkers pay packet, which sees him pocket a remarkable £350k-per-week.

Such a figure sees him earn more than Fernandes, with the current Red Devils skipper earning £300k-per-week, alongside wantaway teammate, Rashford.

Given the club’s current cost-cutting operation, Casemiro – who The Athletic have reported that United would like to shift from the wage bill – should be the first player facing the chop, especially considering he earns the most out of any player in the current squad.

If the club are to land any new stars this month, it’s crucial that current players are offloaded to free up funds, with the Brazilian desperately needing to be moved on to prevent any further losses.

Clement must boldly drop Igamane to unleash "gifted" Rangers star

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action this afternoon as they look to extend their four-game winning streak as Philippe Clement’s side take on St Mirren in Paisley.

Against Dundee, the Light Blues managed to secure all three points with a performance that was hardly swashbuckling, but rather one that got the job done.

Vaclav Cerny proved to be the match-winner with a well-taken goal that was assisted by Danilo. It was a moment of quality worthy of winning any game.

Some players failed to sparkle against the Dens Park side, however, including in-form striker Hamza Igamane, who endured a disappointing performance compared to what the supporters have been used to in recent weeks.

Hamza Igamane struggled against Dundee

The 22-year-old shone against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League, scoring a brilliantly taken goal, while even grabbing an assist against Celtic in the League Cup final defeat which practically guaranteed his place in the side to play Dundee.

Deployed on the left wing to make way for Danilo to start up front, Igamane couldn’t convert any of the opportunities he carved for himself.

Indeed, the centre-forward did register four total shots, succeeded with two of his five dribble attempts and missed two big chances, but he couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

The youngster also lost possession 20 times during his time on the pitch as he delivered his most wasteful performance in quite some time.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast over the coming weeks, Clement may take the chance to switch things up in the final third.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The change Clement needs to make to his Rangers lineup

By making a change, this could see Nedim Bajrami come back into the starting XI against St Mirren.

The attacking midfielder signed for the Light Blues towards the end of the summer transfer window, with the club paying £3.4m to secure his services from Sassuolo.

Since arriving in Glasgow, the Albanian has registered six goal contributions – four goals and two assists – in all competitions, proving to be an inspired signing for the club.

Like Igamane, he has impressed most in the Europa League. Across six matches, Bajrami has created six big chances, averages 2.2 key passes and succeeds with 2.2 dribbles – a success rate of 72% – per match.

These are impressive statistics indeed and Clement will be looking for him to replicate these heights as the Light Blues face the Buddies this afternoon.

Amid the links to Bajrami during the summer transfer window, Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson praised the midfielder, saying: “If you recognise the name Nedim Bajrami it’s probably because of the screamer he scored inside the first minute against Italy at the Euros! A technically gifted, intelligent footballer than can play in multiple positions with plenty of Serie A experience.”

It’s safe to say he’s begun to show signs of why he’s received such praise.

He has certainly been an impressive signing, but the player now has to add a few more goals and assists to his tally in order to really cement a place in the starting XI.

Against St Mirren, Clement must unleash him to terrorise their backline, giving Igamane a rest in the process.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane has been enjoying life at Bayern Munich since his big-money move to the German giants in the summer of 2023 from Tottenham. The England captain ended the 2023-24 season as the Bundesliga top scorer and is on course to do so again this season. Reports have suggested a potential return to the Premier League could be on the cards for Kane this summer, however, the former Tottenham star has downplayed the chances of that happening.

    WHAT KANE SAID

In an interview with ESPN, Kane was asked about a potential return to England in the near future, to which he responded: "I'm not sure. I've said throughout my whole career, I'm not someone who likes to think too far ahead. I'm extremely happy here. I think we have a fantastic team, fantastic coaching staff, and I just feel like whilst I feel like I'm in the best condition, I wanna play at the highest level possible, and this is as high as it gets.

"So I know a lot can change in football in a short space of time and things can happen, but ultimately my focus is here. I'm not thinking about any other league or any other team. And with football, I like to just go with the flow and at the moment, the flow is here at Bayern Munich."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane also added that the extra pressure of playing for a club like Bayern Munich has helped him push himself harder. He also reminisced about his time with Tottenham when adding: "I think when you're just playing in the biggest games every season, year after year, I think that puts you on that stage. I had moments at Spurs where we had that … we had some really great years where we were challenging for titles, and were in the final of the Champions League. So, I had those moments at Spurs, but not on a consistent basis. It wasn't year after year."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

The 31-year-old looks set to win his first-ever major title as Bayern Munich hold a six-point lead in the Bundesliga race over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen. Additionally, the Bavarians also still have a chance to win the Champions League, having reached the quarter-finals.

He added: "This is my second year in Bayern and we have the chance to reach our second semi-final in the Champions League, another title race. So yeah, all those factors that come into it. Bayern are seen as one of the biggest clubs in the world and it's exciting to play for them."

Leeds eyeing January loan move for "exceptional" 22 y/o creative midfielder

Leeds United are believed to be eyeing a January move for an “exceptional” young player, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Leeds preparing for Championship return

The Whites’ season has been curtailed by another international break, stopping Daniel Farke’s side in their tracks as they look to seal promotion from the Championship in 2024/25.

Leeds return to action with a trip to Swansea City on Sunday afternoon, knowing that victory in Wales will give the third-place outfit a chance of ending the weekend in the automatic promotion places, depending on how Sunderland and Sheffield United fare.

While the Whites look primed to be one of the favourites to reach the Premier League between now and May, new signings in January could help give Farke the extra squad depth that he craves, especially given the relentless nature of the Championship, with fixtures coming thick and fast in the coming months.

Gent defender Archie Brown is one player who has been linked with a move to Leeds in one of the upcoming windows, with Chelsea also thought to be pushing to snap up the 22-year-old.

Leeds eyeing move for "exceptional" player

According to Leeds Live, Leeds are still fond of Manchester City youngster James McAtee, potentially looking to bring him in on a loan deal during the January transfer window.

It is claimed that the reigning Premier League champions are “willing to let the player go out on loan”, given his lack of playing time under Pep Guardiola this season. It is stated that “a permanent deal could also be on the cards”, though that would actually go against Leeds’ chances as they don’t have the funds to compete with West Ham, who are eyeing a permanent deal.

Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

McAtee could be a perfect addition for Leeds midway through the season, in a move that may benefit all parties, allowing City to give one of their most talented young players more minutes, improving his development in the process.

As for the Whites, the 22-year-old could be that sprinkling of extra magic that gives them the edge in the promotion battle, with Micah Richards showing that he is a big admirer, saying: “Where’s he from? Where’s he from? The way he moves, the guile on him, you can tell he’s been brought up the correct way, can’t we? Always looking to get on the ball, lovely, both-footed but his strike was exceptional.”

McAtee enjoyed two separate loan spells at Sheffield United in the past, bagging 22 goal contributions (14 goals and eight assists) in 75 appearances, and his creativity could give Farke an extra dimension between now and the end of the season.

With Leeds facing plenty of very defensive set-ups currently, the young Englishman can help unlock defences, with Guardiola saying earlier this season: “(Against) teams who play so deep he has the quality to find it.”

Leeds thought they had the next Kalvin Phillips, now he's in the third tier

Leeds United once handed the young prospect a debut in the Premier League.

The fact that City could reportedly entertain the idea of McAtee leaving permanently could also appeal to the Whites, should they get promoted and have the money to turn a deal permanent come summer 2025.

Liverpool now scouting "special" MLS talent with 36 G/A in 2024

Liverpool are now among the sides keeping a close eye on a new breakout star as they look to bolster Arne Slot’s squad, it has been reported.

Liverpool's Salah contract standoff

Mohamed Salah has been a mainstay in the Liverpool side since he arrived from Roma, and is arguably in some of the best form of his Reds career under Slot. The Egyptian has taken the Premier League by storm once more this season, having managed 11 goals and seven assists in his 13 outings so far to help Liverpool move nine points clear at the top of the table.

Already a Liverpool icon, his 223 goals in Red make him one of the club’s five most prolific goalscorers of all time and despite being 32-years-old he is showing no signs of slowing down. But as it stands, he will be leaving the club for free at the end of the season, with the club yet to offer him a new contract and his current deal expiring in the summer.

Speaking after his side’s 3-2 win over Southampton, he admitted he was “more out than in” as things stand.

“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah told reporters. “You know now I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”

Even if a contract is agreed, Salah cannot remain Liverpool’s first choice winger for ever, and his will be big shoes to fill when he does eventually depart Anfield. Now, Liverpool are eyeing a player who could potentially go some way to filling them.

Liverpool monitoring "special" talent

That comes as Caught Offside report that the Reds are now keeping a close eye on MLS superstar Gabriel Pec. The 23-year-old only arrived in the US in January but has taken the division by storm, grabbing 16 goals and 14 assists in MLS as well as a further six goals and assists in just four playoff outings.

His form saw him awarded the newcomer of the year trophy, where he finished ahead of former Liverpool great Luis Suarez in the voting, as well as providing more goals and assists than the veteran Uruguayan forward.

He has been dubbed a “special” talent by MLS fan account MLS moves on X and now, his form has made clubs sit up and take notice.

That is according to Caught Offside, who claim that Liverpool are “among a number of Premier League clubs who’ve had scouts keeping an eye on Pec”. Pec, who has spent much of the season on the right side of attack, is a left footed forward who likes to cut inside onto his stronger foot, not unlike the likes of Salah and Bukayo Saka.

It is added that the 23-year-old is being “eyed up as a future target” for the Reds, which could see him part of the solution to fill the right flank in a post-Salah Liverpool setup.
