Tom Alsop rides the feelgood factor as Sussex feel the breeze of new beginnings

Winless Yorkshire left frustrated once again as youthful hosts build on promising start

Alan Gardner20-Apr-2023Sussex 275 for 5 (Alsop 95, Carter 60*, Haines 48) vs YorkshireThere is a mood of sporting optimism down on this part of the south coast. Granted, that might be in large part due to Brighton’s impressive season under Roberto de Zerbi – they currently sit seventh in the Premier League and play an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday – but there are already encouraging signs for those hoping that Paul Farbrace can oversee a long-awaited renaissance at Sussex.A hard-fought win in the opening round against Durham was followed by a gritty display with the bat on day one of this encounter with Yorkshire. Tom Alsop’s 95 was the centrepiece, with Oli Carter following up his match-sealing turn in the fourth innings two weeks ago by recording an unbeaten first half-century of the season. Had Alsop not holed out to deep midwicket off the second ball after tea, with a fifth first-class hundred since joining Sussex last year ready to be ticked off, their position might have been even stronger.Alsop is one of the players that Farbrace has identified as key to turning a promising but inexperienced squad into one that can challenge for promotion. At 27, he has been around the game for the best part of a decade but left Hampshire unfulfilled, his average just 25.88. For Sussex, that number swells to 42.56 and this year he will act as vice-captain in the LV= Insurance Championship, ready to step in when Cheteshwar Pujara is away on India duty.Always a stylish-looking left-hander, Alsop appears to be developing the substance to go with it. He had a dose of luck early in his innings, inside-edging consecutive deliveries from Mickey Edwards past his stumps for four, but grew steadily more authoritative during the afternoon as his 94-run stand with Carter edged Sussex away from a potentially tricky position at 124 for 4.His dismissal, hoicking at a half-tracker from George Hill – Yorkshire’s fifth seamer bowling his first over of the day – straight to Dom Bess in front of the pavilion, brought an understandable groan from the crowd. But with the always approachable Farbrace regularly doing his rounds, the mood at the 1st Central County Ground is currently one of positivity – and that was reflected back during another punchy half-century stand between Carter and Fynn Hudson-Prentice before rain and bad light brought about an early close.Yorkshire’s disposition was less sunny as they skulked from the field, hands thrust deep into pockets. They arrived in Hove having suffered a complete washout on their trip to Bristol last week, and in the wake of a first defeat at Headingley by Leicestershire in more than 100 years. The club is attempting another rebuild after relegation in 2022 – not to mention the racism scandal that rumbled on right through pre-season – and here they included two debutants, in Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel and beanpole Aussie quick Edwards, who is eligible as a local due to a British passport. There was also a first outing this term for Matt Fisher, capped by England in Tests 13 months ago but subsequently sidelined by a back stress injury. Fisher spoke while on England Lions duty over the winter of looking to bulk up, in order for his body to better withstand the rigours of a first-class career that has been limited to 27 appearances across eight years; he certainly hit the pitch hard running downhill from the Cromwell Road End but went unrewarded despite troubling both Alsop and Tom Haines.Sussex’s decision to bat looked a sound one, on an oatmeal-coloured deck beneath pale blue skies, and the openers went off at a canter against some wayward early bowling. Fisher and Ben Coad pitched the ball up in search of swing but were left kicking the turf in frustration as Haines and Ali Orr rattled up 41 runs from the first seven overs of the morning.Haines had an unsuccessful whoosh at Fisher first ball and looked a little uncertain to begin with, before settling into a series of crisp, front-foot punches. Orr, meanwhile, addressed the ball as if he meant business, bat raised high in his stance before launching Coad dismissively through long-off. But, having been unluckily run-out at the non-striker’s end in his first innings of the season against Durham, he somehow managed to be caught at slip off his thigh pad pulling at Jordan Thompson, as Yorkshire broke through after an opening stand worth 48.The spin of Bess was introduced as early as the 17th over, and Yorkshire gradually found a measure of control. Bess was lofted for a brusque straight six by Haines in his second over but had his revenge in the next, winning an lbw decision from umpire Neil Pratt to make the score 83 for 2. Haines’ reaction, holding his bat in front of his face while turning away in frustration, suggested the opener was convinced of an inside edge. The soothing presence of Pujara at the crease is another reason for optimism at Sussex, but he fell after adding a round 50 for the third wicket with Alsop – Thompson smuggling one past his inside edge for a dismissal that sent his first-class average for Sussex plummeting to a mere 97.07. Coad then sent Tom Clark’s off stump for a jaunt towards the Sea End, but in the end it was Yorkshire who were the more grateful when the bad weather swept in.

Tottenham’s "future £100m" star could become their biggest sale since Bale

As one of the ‘big six’, Tottenham Hotspur fans have been starved of success in recent history.

To try to correct that, the club have appointed a range of contrasting managers in recent years, from the more cautious José Mourinho and Antonio Conte to the uber-attacking Ange Postecoglou.

However, as most fans will probably attest, one of the major factors holding the club back is the board’s reluctance to go big in the transfer market in the same way their rivals like Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea do.

It’s a choice that baffles as much as it frustrates the fan base, as, according to a recent report from Deloitte, the club are the ninth wealthiest in world football and, on top of that, they have a decent track record of selling big stars for even bigger money, and based it looks like they could already have their future star to sell, who could go for even more money than Gareth Bale in years to come.

Spurs' biggest sales

So, before looking at the future star in question, it’s worth looking at some of Spurs’ biggest sales, starting with Bale.

Every Premier League club's record sale (timeless)

The Welsh superstar joined Real Madrid in a then-world-record £85m deal in the summer of 2013, which, for a player who cost the club £10m in 2007 and had just scored 26 goals and provided ten assists in just 44 games the season prior, was probably a fair deal for all parties involved.

Now, just behind the Cardiff-born icon in terms of the transfer fee is actually Harry Kane, as while his transfer to Bayern Munich in 2023 was initially reported to have cost the Germans around £86.4m at the time, it later came out that the initial fee was likely closer to £82m.

Even so, for a player with just a year left on his deal, that still has to be looked at as a reasonably impressive fee for the Lilywhites, even if it was a particularly painful transfer for the fans.

Interestingly, the third most expensive departure isn’t even an attacker; it is Kyle Walker.

Kyle Walker playing for Tottenham

The sensational right-back joined the club in 2009 and, after spending some time on loan with Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa, would go on to make 229 appearances, in which he scored four goals and provided 18 assists, before moving to Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for around £54m, which was a world record for a defender at the time – how things change.

Yet, while all three of these sales represent brilliant business from Tottenham, it looks like they could already have a player on their hands who could go for even more in the future.

Market Movers

Spurs' future record sale

One of the few positives to come from this season for Tottenham has been the development of their youngsters.

Lucas Bergvall has been given plenty of minutes in the middle of the park, Mikey Moore has seen action from the bench and occasionally started games.

At the same time, Archie Gray has been an integral solution to the club’s nightmare injury situation, and it is he who could be the club’s next record sale.

It’s not just us saying that either, as respected football analyst Ben Mattinson described the teenage sensation as a “future £100m” player in February of last year, and in the 12 months since, that claim has started to look more and more realistic.

At the time, Mattinson highlighted his “composure and versatility” as key reasons why the then-Leeds United ace would go a long way in the game, and once again, his impact in North London this season only solidifies that claim.

For example, even though the Durham-born gem is primarily a midfielder, he has been tasked with covering at centre-back and full-back for most of the campaign, and despite his age, slight frame and inexperience in playing in defence in the top flight, he has done a seriously admirable job.

In all, the 18-year-old phenom has made 17 appearances at centre-back, seven at right-back, five at left-back, and just two in defensive midfield for the Lilywhites this season and has already become a firm fan favourite among the Spurs faithful.

Ultimately, it’s still very early days for Gray at Spurs, but as things stand, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mattinson’s claim about his future price tag rings true. However, if that is the case, we can’t imagine the fans would be particularly happy about a potential sale.

Arsenal urged to strip captaincy from Martin Odegaard after 'six out of 10 season' and hand armband to Gunners midfielder instead

Liverpool legend Martin Lawrenson believes Martin Odegaard should be stripped of the Arsenal captaincy after a "six out of 10 season".

Arsenal told to strip Odegaard of captaincyNorwegian has had "six out of 10" seasonGunners urged to give armband to team-mateFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal fans feared the worst when Odegaard suffered an ankle injury early in the season but upon his return in October, the 26-year-old has not hit the heights of previous campaigns. As a result, ex-defender Lawrenson thinks Gunners star Declan Rice should take his place as captain.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT LAWRENSON SAID

He told Paddy Power: “The captain’s armband should be taken away from Martin Ødegaard, so he can get back to focusing on his performances. We all know that he’s a good player, but he’s just had a six out of 10 season. If you gave Declan Rice the armband instead, you imagine that it wouldn’t affect his performances, especially considering he was captain at West Ham. I’d give it to Rice so Ødegaard can focus on improving his performances.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Odegaard has still scored five goals and bagged 10 assists this season, but that is some way below his 23-goal contribution haul from last term. Conversely, Rice – who has particularly excelled in the Champions League – is in the form of his life, and perhaps there is an argument that he should be Arsenal's next skipper.

Injured Shami ruled out of ODIs against Bangladesh, doubtful for Tests

Umran Malik, who made his ODI debut in New Zealand recently, has been called up as the replacement

PTI and ESPNcricinfo staff03-Dec-2022Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh starting Sunday because of a shoulder injury, and Umran Malik has replaced him in the ODI squad.Shami is “currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru,” a BCCI statement on Saturday morning said. It has been learnt that Shami had suffered the injury during a training session after he returned from Australia, where India made a semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup last month. It is also understood that Shami could miss the two-Test series in Bangladesh, beginning in Chattogram on December 14.

While Malik, who made a decent start to his ODI career in New Zealand recently, was not in India’s original touring party, India did have the option of calling up one of the quick bowlers who are on a shadow tour of Bangladesh with the A team currently. Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar are among the quicks there. While Saini took four wickets in the first four-day game, Mukesh took three. It is possible, though, that if Shami is ruled out of the Test series too, one of them could come into contention. While Mukesh is uncapped internationally, Saini has played two Tests, having made his debut on the tour of Australia in 2020-21.Apart from Shami, Ravindra Jadeja has also been forced to miss the ODIs since he hasn’t recovered sufficiently after undergoing knee surgery in September. His participation in the Tests also remains doubtful, with left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar – also with India A in Bangladesh – a possible replacement option for Jadeja.

Agreement reached and medical booked as Newcastle close in on £9m+ sale

A “unique” Newcastle United player is now close to leaving the club in the January transfer window, with an agreement reached over his exit.

Newcastle transfer news

Magpies transfer rumours are refusing to go away as the current window nears its conclusion next Monday, with Semih Kilicosoy linked with a move to St James’ Park over the weekend. The 19-year-old Besiktas winger is a target this month, but it may depend on whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to keep him or not.

While Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande has been mentioned as an option to come in and boost Eddie Howe’s defensive options, Barcelona ace Eric Garcia is being looked at as an alternative, as Newcastle look to find a long-term partner for Sven Botman.

When it comes to January outgoings at St James’, Miguel Almiron has consistently been linked with a move away, with an agreement reportedly reached with MLS side Atlanta United.

That said, personal terms were yet to be agreed, which was acting as a potential stumbling block, but there has now been a fresh development in the saga.

Newcastle ace agrees January exit with medical booked

According to Monumental AM 1080 [via Sport Witness], an agreement has been reached to bring an end to Almiron’s Newcastle career. The 30-year-old will sign a four-year deal at Atlanta, with the transfer fee thought to be £9.6m. He will travel there at the end of the week to complete the transfer and undergo a medical.

Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has also backed this up, saying the deal is “done”, with just a medical and an official announcement to come.

Newcastle United's MiguelAlmironbefore the match

This ultimately feels like the right decision for everyone concerned, even though Howe has shown his love for Almiron in the past, saying:

“He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer. I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof. The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us.”

Almiron was struggling to get minutes with Newcastle this season, with Jacob Murphy often preferred on the right flank, and at 30, he isn’t getting any younger. He hasn’t registered a single goal contribution in nine Premier League appearances in 2024/25, highlighting his lack of influence and action.

The Paraguayan’s commitment and team ethic have always been impressive, but a lack of end product has too often been an issue, with the Magpies ace not possessing the elite quality in that area that Howe now needs moving forward.

The new Salah: Chelsea could sign "one of Europe’s best forwards" for £58m

In Cole Palmer, Chelsea have one of Europe’s biggest talents. A talisman to drive the club toward an illustrious future and regular positions to challenge for silverware.

Manchester City must be seething. Pep Guardiola couldn’t guarantee the young playmaker the game time that he wanted after showing great potential on the fringes, and so Chelsea raised eyebrows when forking out £42.5m to bring him to Stamford Bridge in August 2023.

Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea

67 games later, the Three Lions superstar has scored 38 goals and supplied 21 assists in a Chelsea shirt, with Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher pronouncing the 22-year-old as “the best player in the Premier League” earlier in the season.

He’s been sensational this term (Palmer, not Carragher), but perhaps not the finest player that the Premier League has to offer. Not quite. Not yet. Mohamed Salah has been ridiculous in front of goal for Liverpool.

Chelsea have learned from the errors of their ways and plucked City’s superstar in the making, something that the four-in-a-row champions will regret for years, for Chelsea once let Salah go before he grew into his skin.

When Chelsea sold Mohamed Salah

Chelsea signed Salah over a decade ago, welcoming Basel’s talented winger for an £11m fee in 2014. Jose Mourinho’s interest had been piqued after a goalscoring performance against the Blues in the Champions League.

Now a Liverpool superstar, Salah hardly looked like he was going to become a Premier League player of note, with Mourinho even saying that the Egyptian needed to “raise his level.”

He only scored twice across 19 appearances for Chelsea, and after a couple of productive loan spells in Italy, was sold to Roma for about £12m, turning over a marginal profit for a peripheral player.

How Chelsea must regret how it turned out. At least, in Palmer, Chelsea have indeed rectified their former wrongs. And anyway, with Enzo Maresca looking to improve his exciting team, the Londoners have picked out Salah’s natural successor and could swoop this year.

Chelsea eyeing "the new Salah"

As per reports at the weekend from Caught Offside, Chelsea are in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, who in the words of analyst David Segar has been “one of Europe’s best forwards” this season and is valued at €70m (£58m).

Liverpool have been monitoring the Egypt sensation’s progress since the start of the season with Salah into the final year of his contract, though Manchester City are now ramping up the gas as they prepare for a rebuild.

That said, Chelsea are firmly in the picture, albeit on the outside, and could look to make their move, especially when considering he’s been named “the new Salah” by journalist Andres Weiss.

Why Chelsea should sign Omar Marmoush

Marmoush has been on fire this season, posting 18 goals and 12 assists across 24 matches in all competitions. He’s already claimed two German Bundesliga Player of the Month awards as he supercharges Frankfurt’s push for Champions League football.

How curious that his countryman Salah is the only player across Europe’s top five leagues this season to have chalked more goal contributions than him, making a telling comment on just how clinical he’s been – especially given that he’s played 15 games, four fewer than Salah and five less than Palmer.

As per FBref, Marmoush also ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, emphasising both athleticism and underlying creative quality that also makes Salah so special.

Marmoush wears the trappings of an elite-level Premier League forward and could revolutionise Chelsea’s frontline, wreaking havoc with Palmer behind him as a kind of creative muse.

Of course, Chelsea have something of an overload of talented forwards within Maresca’s squad, and any move should not be to the detriment of Nicolas Jackson, 23, who has shown much promise this year.

However, given Marmoush’s fluidity and multi-faceted attacking qualities, he might just be the perfect upgrade on Christopher Nkunku, who has struggled to find a place in Chelsea’s Premier League squad this term.

Nkunku has been unfortunate with injuries since joining Chelsea at the start of last season, and while he’s scored 12 goals from 27 matches this term, only two have come in the Premier League.

Struggling to identify a role within the squad, Nkunku has played across four positions for Chelsea, most productive in a number ten-type role that is typically occupied by Palmer.

Given that the France international lacks the physicality to survive as a Premier League striker, averaging only 1.2 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore, with a success rate of 40%, Chelsea would be wise to act quickly, leaping over suitors such as Liverpool and City to get their mitts on one of Europe’s prized possessions and continue to promote the exciting Maresca project.

The end for Robertson: Liverpool planning big offer to sign "explosive" ace

The January transfer window has around two weeks left to go before it slams shut and Liverpool are yet to make any signings to bolster their playing squad.

Arne Slot may be content with the options that he already has at his disposal as they have led the club to the top of the Champions League and the Premier League tables.

A draw against Nottingham Forest away from home in the top-flight on Tuesday night was not a massive dent to their title pursuit, as they remain six points clear of the Tricky Trees.

The Dutch head coach will still, however, have one eye on potential deals that could be done to improve the team, to ensure that competition for places remains high and no complacency settles in during the second half of the season.

Liverpool need to remain consistent to compete for trophies in the final few months of the 2024/25 campaign and that is why Slot could want to make one or two additions this month to keep the players on their toes.

In fact, the Reds are reportedly looking to bring in a player to bolster their options at left-back, which could be bad news for Andrew Robertson.

Liverpool eyeing Serie A starlet

According to Italian outlet Solo Lecce, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are interested in a swoop to sign Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Premier League leaders have prepared an offer of €40m (£34m) to secure his services before the February deadline, as they look to add to their squad.

It states that the ‘top management’ at Anfield wants to make a move for the 20-year-old starlet, although it does not reveal whether they would like to get a deal done to sign him for January or to reach an agreement to bring him in for the summer.

Denmark'sPatrickDorgucelebrates scoring their first goal

Solo Lecce adds that Liverpool have sent scouts to watch him in action on four occasions and that they have been impressed by his performances and his versatility for Lecce, which has led to them preparing a bid to snap him up.

The outlet claims that Napoli are also interested in a swoop for the Danish dynamo and have already made an offer of €30m (£25m) for his services, which means that the Reds are willing to pay €10m more for him than the Serie A giants.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This means that Liverpool may currently be leading the race to secure his services, although there is no mention of how much the Italian side currently value Dorgu at.

If the current Premier League leaders can strike an agreement with Lecce to sign the Denmark international, though, it could be the end of Robertson’s long-standing tenure as the first-choice left-back at Anfield.

Andy Robertson's regression at Liverpool

The Scotland international has struggled at times this season and has regressed in comparison to his form from the 2023/24 campaign in Jurgen Klopp’s last year with the club.

Last season, the 30-year-old star made 23 appearances in the Premier League and created an eye-catching ten ‘big chances’ from left-back, with 2.8 key passes per match.

This shows that he offered a huge creative threat down the left flank with his ability to bomb on and deliver quality crosses on a consistent basis for the Reds.

As you can see in the table above, Robertson’s form has tailed off under Slot this season and he has been unable to offer anywhere clear to the level of creativity on offer last term.

His defensive numbers are also down and the Scottish dud has already been sent off more times than he was in the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.

Robertson, who turns 31 in March, has struggled to get back to his best this season and the signing of a younger, high-potential, left-back could be the end of his time as a regular starter.

Why it could be the end for Andy Robertson

Signing Dorgu could be the end for Robertson because their respective performances at league level this season suggests that the Lecce talent may already be ready to take over from him at Anfield.

The 20-year-old talent, who was hailed as “explosive” by U23 talent scout Antonio Mango, has caught the eye whilst playing for the Italian team on the left flank this season, with three goals and one assist in 19 appearances in the Serie A.

Dorgu created five chances and registered his first assist of the season in a 3-1 win over Empoli last time out in the league, which speaks to the kind of creative quality he can provide at his best.

It is his work out of possession, however, that could spell the end of Robertson’s time as the first-choice left-back for Liverpool, because he could offer more to Slot’s team from a defensive perspective.

As you can see in the table above, Dorgu has significantly outperformed the Scottish defender in a host of key defensive metrics, particularly with how many duels he wins and his strength in the air.

Those statistics suggest that Liverpool could improve their set-piece defending and defending from right-wing crosses to the back post because the Danish titan is strong in the air in comparison to Robertson, who has struggled in that area of the game.

At the age of 20, Dorgu is also ten years younger than the Scotland international and could come in with a view to being the long-term first-choice left-back of the Slot era at Anfield.

1 ByAngus Sinclair Jan 15, 2025

Therefore, Liverpool signing the Lecce star this month could mean that the writing is already on the wall for Robertson, whose performances suggest that his time as a regular starter for the Reds could be coming to a close.

Even worse than Idah: Rodgers must drop Celtic man who lost 83% duels

Celtic moved 16 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table on Wednesday night as they secured a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Dundee United.

The Hoops claimed all three points thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda and substitute Reo Hatate either side of half time, finally taking advantage of their game in hand to move even further clear in the top-flight.

It was a composed, but not perfect, performance from the Scottish giants, who prevented Kasper Schmeichel from being called into strenuous action.

Celtic target Kasper Schmeichel in action for Denmark.

However, there were a couple of players who struggled to make an impact on the match as they failed to make the most of their opportunity to impress, with Adam Idah being one of them.

Adam Idah's performance against Dundee United

The Ireland international was selected ahead of Kyogo Furuhashi for the second match in a row, but was unable to justify Brendan Rodgers’ faith in him.

Idah played the opening 62 minutes of the game, before being replaced by the Japan international, and was not involved in the only goal of the clash – Maeda’s opening strike – before coming off.

The 6 foot 3 summer signing from Norwich had 19 touches of the ball in total and registered one effort on goal, which was blocked, and created one chance for his teammates.

Idah may argue that the service into him was not good enough, which may be fair given that he did not get a single ‘big chance’ in front of goal, but he did not do enough during the match to create opportunities for himself, with a lack of movement in the final third.

The Hoops centre-forward, however, was not the worst performer on the pitch for Celtic, as Hyun-jun Yang came in from the start on the right and should be instantly dropped by Rodgers after a disappointing display.

Hyun-jun Yang's performance against Dundee United

The South Korean attacker was drafted into the starting line-up late into the warm-up after Nicolas Kuhn pulled up with an issue and that may have affected his performance on the night, as it was the showing of a player who did not appear ready to perform.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It was his fifth start, in 11 appearances, in the Premiership so far this season and the 22-year-old dud is still searching for his first direct goal contribution, with zero goals and zero assists to his name.

Yang struggled in and out of possession throughout the evening at Parkhead on Wednesday, as he lost 83% (5/6) of his duels and was far too easily outmuscled by opposition players down the right flank.

  • Moody on Sunrisers' dream fast-bowling line-up

“Central contract straightway,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out after Malik put on another impactful performance with a three-wicket haul in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s win against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. “And keep him in the mix, don’t let him float around. Keep him in the mix with the main players and then he learns seeing (and) being around with the [Mohammed] Shamis and the [Jasprit] Bumrahs, and see the way they train, see the way they manage their workload.”Of course, there’ll be the team management there, support staff, that’ll help him do that, but don’t let him stray at the moment. Get him into the mix, and keep him there and groom him.”While Malik has rattled the best batters in the IPL – on Tuesday, Malik hit Rohit Sharma in the helmet – with his extreme pace as well as uprooted stumps, someone like Shami has called on him to focus on combining “pace with accuracy”.”He’ll get better and better,” Shastri said. “You see his bowling once he takes a wicket. Look at the lines he starts bowling as opposed to when he has not got a wicket – that’s when he is trying everything, his lines are all over the place. You don’t want him to cut down on pace. The last thing you would tell him looking for control, cut down on pace. What you want him to do is get his lines right: if he can bowl that stump line, attack the stumps on a constant basis, varying his lengths, he will trouble [batters].”If he gets a wicket and new guy comes in, he can really rattle him because he has got the pace, he can keep the bloke on his toes, but it’s that line – if he gets into that channel, without cutting his pace it will make a huge difference.”Shastri: ‘Get him into the mix, and keep him there and groom him’•BCCI

And if Malik could stick to that plan, Shastri said he would not be surprised if Malik is soon be part of the Indian Test squad. “I promise you, this guy is going to be a handful in red-ball cricket. Handful, really. If he is part of an Indian pace battery that (already) has Bumrah, Shami, you add this bloke in (as) a fourth guy, it’s going to be a serious attack.”Shastri’s views are similar to that of Sunrisers’ head coach Tom Moody, who had said Malik was like a “Ferrari” and there was no point asking him to cut down his pace and focus on line and length. At 22, Malik is enjoying the best time of his life, doing something that comes naturally to him: bowling fast. But you can sense he is also hearing what the experts are saying. After the win on Tuesday, Malik was keen to understand how his senior Sunrisers team-mate Bhuvneshwar Kumar had bowled a maiden in the penultimate over of Mumbai’s chase.Bhuvneshwar pointed out that he had worked out delivering yorkers was the “best option” based on the behaviour of the pitch, and he managed to pull it off. Malik then wanted to know what was the key to bowling successfully in death overs, the most difficult phase in T20 cricket. “The most necessary thing in death bowling is to keep yourself calm because what happens often is the pressure comes as soon as a boundary is hit,” Bhuvneshwar told Malik in a chat on . “So the only thing I will say is how much you can keep calm and have a calm mind then it will help you.”

Emery must unleash "special" Aston Villa star who’s their answer to Sesko

Although Aston Villa have turned a corner in the Premier League with two recent wins tallied up, Unai Emery’s men are without a victory from their last two encounters in the Champions League.

A 1-0 loss to Club Brugge was a bizarre defeat to take, as Tyrone Mings’ comical incident when picking the ball back up resulted in the Brugge winner, whilst a goalless draw with Juventus last time out for the Villans could have been another great win at Villa Park in Europe if it wasn’t for the intervention of VAR ruling out Morgan Rogers’ late goal.

Emery will just be praying that Villa getting back into their groove in the league means a positive performance and result is coming later versus RB Leipzig, with a number of standout performers impressing the Spaniard in the top-flight.

Aston Villa's key performers in the Premier League

After eight winless games in a row in all competitions, the relief was palpable when Villa beat Brentford towards the start of the month, as Emery’s men showed no signs of rust in toppling Thomas Frank’s Bees 3-1.

Rogers was especially on top form in that confidence-boosting win, with a stunning goal next to his name setting Villa on their way to the three points, on top of the fact he also managed to amass two successful dribbles and three key passes as an attacking livewire.

Ollie Watkins also chipped in with a strike from the penalty spot in the convincing victory, with Emery hopeful that the England international can exploit the Leipzig defence in some capacity, having sat out the 1-0 win over Southampton.

But, his replacement on the day could get the nod to start again versus the German hosts, with Jhon Duran potentially being deployed as Villa’s very own Benjamin Sesko to counteract Leipzig’s firepower, after scoring this decisive winner against the Saints.

Aston Villa's very own Sesko

It goes without saying now to the Villa faithful that Duran is a potent finisher of chances, having bagged five Premier League goals this season from just one start, which funnily came against Russell Martin’s lowly visitors.

That total betters Sesko’s own goal haul in league action for Leipzig by one, despite the fact the Slovenian striker has accumulated 13 starts in contrast and has previously been noted as a “monster” in front of goal by football analyst Ben Mattinson.

Still, at the very peak of his game, the Slovenia international can be as deadly as fellow youngster Duran when breathing down on goal, with the strike above in Champions League action earlier this campaign versus Juventus demonstrating his coolness in taking just one touch before emphatically firing home.

The Colombian loves scoring similar goals that come like a bolt from the blue for opposition defenders to contain, with his strike against Southampton seeing him pressure the South Coast side into making an error defensively, before calmly slotting away the opportunity that then came about.

Looking at the table above too, the “special” 20-year-old – as he was labelled by Emery last campaign – has had lots of joy against Bundesliga teams this season to date, as the winner fell his way against Bayern Munich back in October from just 13 touches of the ball.

Imagine what the explosive attacker could possibly be capable of over a full 90 minutes away in Leipzig, with Marco Rose’s men susceptible to a leaky display at the back as well, by conceding ten goals from five Champions League contests.

If he isn’t at his clinical best from the start, Emery can just unleash Watkins when he wants to, as a third straight victory in all competitions remains firmly on the ex-Arsenal boss’ agenda.
