Knight Riders have everything to lose against potential party-poopers Sunrisers

Knight Riders have an iffy middle-order, but they also have Shakib Al Hasan waiting for his turn

Sruthi Ravindranath02-Oct-2021Big pictureLast season, Sunrisers Hyderabad ended Kolkata Knight Riders’ playoff hopes with a win against Mumbai Indians in their last league game. Sunrisers were a better-looking team then, and they claimed their spot in the top four with a strong NRR.This season, they became the first to drop out of contention for the playoffs – two wins from 11 games usually do that; they just didn’t click as a unit, but their bowling has sort of come together in the last couple of games. They came close to winning against table-toppers Chennai Super Kings in their last match. And they do have the chance to spoil Knight Riders’ party, once again.Watch IPL on ESPN+ (US only)

The 2021 IPL is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match in English here and in Hindi here, on Sunday.

Knight Riders have been in this situation in the last couple of seasons as well – and faltered, finishing fifth, on both occasions. They wouldn’t want to complicate it this time, too, and a win here could strengthen their chances. They have a better chance this time too. Among the teams in the middle – five fighting for two spots – they have the best NRR. They will be facing the two bottom-placed teams in their next two games, and they have the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy winning games for them. But they have not been consistent. For one, they have been struggling with their combination in the absence of Andre Russell. Their captain Eoin Morgan has still not found form. They are coming into the match on the back of a loss, to Punjab Kings on Friday. Their focus will be on getting their playing XI right. And it might not be easy to pull that off.Qualification chancesMumbai Indians’ defeat on Saturday means Knight Riders are now in control of their own destiny. If they win their last two matches, their tally of 14 points and an excellent net run rate (currently 0.302) will almost certainly ensure qualification. However, if they lose to Sunrisers, they will have to hope that the three other teams who are currently on 10 – Mumbai, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals – also lose at least one of their two remaining games and finish on no more than 12 points. Then Knight Riders could still qualify with a win in their last game against Royals. In the newsIt is not clear when Russell and Lockie Ferguson, who have been out with injuries, will be fit to play. Knight Riders brought an extra batter in Tim Seifert for the last game, while Tim Southee, who initially replaced Russell in the XI, took Ferguson’s spot on the day. They do have the option to bring in allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who can not only chip in with his bowling, but can also provide the much-needed batting heft in the middle order. Head coach Brendon McCullum on Friday said that the team sees Shakib mainly as a batter in the top three, though it “doesn’t mean he can’t slot in somewhere else”.Will Shakib Al Hasan get a look in? Barring him, all other Sunrisers batters have scored at less than 110 against Narine. However, Saha has been dismissed by Narine thrice in ten meetings. Knight Riders will want to take advantage of this match up and send Narine to bowl up front to the opener.Stats that matter Iyer has been superb at the top of the order for Knight Riders. The 193 runs he has scored is the third-highest by an uncapped Indian player after five matches in the IPL. Shubman Gill’s average of 19.9 is the lowest among batters who have scored a minimum of 200 runs in IPL 2021. Dinesh Karthik needs five more to get to 4000 runs in the IPL.

Sam Curran's five-for sets England up before Joe Root, Eoin Morgan seal clinical run chase

Sam Curran’s maiden international five-for set England up for victory and their top order sealed the deal, despite Dhananjaya de Silva putting up a fight for Sri Lanka in the second ODI at The Kia Oval.Curran took 5 for 48 from 10 overs, while fellow left-armer David Willey took 4 for 64 as Sri Lanka reached 241 for 9, largely on the back of Dhananjaya’s run-a-ball 91.But, led by half-centuries from Eoin Morgan, Joe Root and Jason Roy, England overhauled the target with seven overs to spare, winning by eight wickets to go 2-0 up in the three-match series.Morgan’s unbeaten 75 came in his 16th international innings across both white-ball formats since he had last passed fifty, while Root went past the mark for the second match in a row to remain not out 68, the pair putting on an unbroken 140-run stand for the third wicket.Related

Sri Lanka had no answer for the swinging ball early on with Curran the chief purveyor at his home ground. At one point, he had taken three wickets for three runs in 1.3 overs as England made early breakthroughs.Dhananjaya restored some order after the chaotic start and shared valuable partnerships with Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka to steady the innings, Shanaka falling three runs short of a half-century.Willey had an lbw decision overturned on the fourth ball of the day, Pathum Nissanka successful with his review, which showed he had edged the ball onto his pad. But Curran struck four balls later, removing Kusal Perera for a second-ball duck.Dhananjaya de Silva acknowledges the applause for his fifty•PA Images/Getty

By the end of the second over, Sri Lanka were 6 for 2 after Curran also pinned Avishka Fernando – unexpectedly back in the side after apparently being ruled out of the series by a thigh injury – with a ball that shaped back in and hit him in line with leg stump. They were in disarray when Curran claimed his third, pegging back Nissanka’s middle stump with a big inswinger that beat the inside edge. That brought Dhananjaya to the middle and, having passed a late fitness test after suffering back spasms, he injected some experience to a Sri Lanka side which had blooded three players in Tuesday’s five-wicket loss at Durham.A short ball from Willey lured a mis-timed pull from Charith Asalanka – the only debutant from Chester-le-Street to hold his place – which sailed straight to George Garton, the substitute fielder at short midwicket while Morgan was off the field. With seven overs bowled, Sri Lanka were 21 for 4.Dhananjaya and Hasaranga began salvaging the innings, the former showing strong intent as he helped himself to boundaries off Willey and Curran down the ground, through midwicket and to the off side. They took Sri Lanka to 47 for 4 by the end of the first powerplay and, despite a near-miss when taking a single – Dhananjaya was nearly run out as well as almost colliding with Jonny Bairstow all at once – they survived. It was Bairstow who came off worse when he took Curran’s wild throw awkwardly on the left thumb and had it taped before carrying on.Hasaranga offered an early chance, edging a back-of-a-length ball from Mark Wood to Bairstow off the shoulder of the bat, but was put down as the keeper flung himself high to his right. He then hit two fours off a Curran over, pulled soundly over midwicket and driven gorgeously through cover, but it was a Curran bouncer that did him in as he took it on and picked out Sam Billings at deep square leg for 26, having put on 65 runs with Dhananjaya.Sam Curran acknowledges the applause for his five-for•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

Dhananjaya reached his fifty off 58 deliveries and Shanaka brought up the team 100 by launching Curran for a powerful six over wide long-on.Willey ended Dhanajaya’s stay with a short ball pulled poorly in the direction of deep square leg, where Root snaffled the catch. Shanaka fell to Willey, cutting another short delivery to Curran just inside the rope at cover point, and Curran claimed his fifth wicket with a bouncer that Chamika Karunaratne tried to pull, only to see it loop behind him and into Bairstow’s waiting gloves.Willey found himself on a hat-trick when he added Binura Fernando’s wicket, well caught by Adil Rashid running in from fine leg, to that of Shankaka, taken on the last ball of his previous spell, but Dushmantha Chameera denied him.Roy was in fine touch after missing the last T20I and the first ODI with a hamstring problem: by the time he reached 40, off the 26th ball he faced, he had racked up eight boundaries including back-to-back fours off Binura Fernando, bisecting fine leg and deep backward square off his pads and punishing a wider one through point to raise England’s fifty.Bairstow took longer to find his rhythm but he did so in style, taking 16 off one Asitha Fernando over with two fours and a six thundered over long-off. And, after first powerplay, England were 65 without loss.Bairstow fell to Hasaranga for 29, though, chopping a legspinner onto his off stump, having just managed to edge the previous ball for four past the keeper.Joe Root and Eoin Morgan cruised in the middle overs•AFP/Getty Images

Roy took another 21 deliveries to make the 10 runs needed to reach his half-century and he didn’t hit another four until the 17th over when he struck Hasaranga for two in as many balls, over midwicket and straight down the ground. That was the precursor to his demise which came when he walloped a back-of-a-length Karunaratne delivery to short midwicket, where Dhananjaya took a stunning catch leaping to his right. But with England 104 for 2 and Root, whose unbeaten 79 saw England home in the opening ODI, accompanying Morgan with more than 32 overs remaining, there was no sense of urgency.Morgan brought up his fifty off as many balls with a single edged past the keeper off Hasaranga shortly after hitting the same bowler for six over cow corner. Root guided Dhananjaya behind point for his half-century.Needing 18 off the last 10 overs, the two England captains got there with ease, Morgan cracking the winning runs to rope at deep backward square off a Binura Fernando short ball, having worn the previous delivery somewhat painfully on his thumb before it almost rolled onto his stumps.

Leeds warned their £15,000-p/w youngster will now be plotting January exit

Leeds United have been warned they have a promising young player on board whose agents will already be looking to secure a move away in January due to his lack of playing time.

The Yorkshire side had a very chaotic transfer window, as while they brought in several new faces, they also lost some key individuals, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a solid start to the Championship campaign.

ByDan Emery Sep 5, 2024 Leeds transfer target refuses new contract

It was reported this week that one of Leeds’ new signings, Ao Tanaka, wasn’t in fact the club’s first choice to be brought in to reinforce the midfield. The Whites decided to move for the Japanese midfielder after they had missed out on other targets.

One of the players that Leeds were said to be interested in signing was FC Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic, with the Championship side having a bid worth £3.4 million rejected earlier in this transfer window.

It has now come to light that Ljubicic has rejected a new contract at the German side and will become a free agent nine months from now if no new deal is agreed. The 26-year-old is already up and running for FC Koln this season, and while they try and get him to sign a new contract, the player just wants to concentrate on his football, according to the club’s sporting director, Christian Keller, leaving things open for Leeds to make another attempt in 2025.

As Leeds may eye a deal for Ljubicic in January or possibly next summer, they may also have to face that one of their current players could be looking to leave when that transfer window arrives.

Leeds warned Gelhardt will be plotting a January exit

Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer has warned Leeds that they have a player in Joe Gelhardt whose agent may already be plotting a January transfer.

This is because the young striker has remained at Elland Road this season despite him falling down the pecking order at the club and struggling to make an impact since his move from Wigan Athletic. The 22-year-old, who is said to earn £15,000 a week at Leeds, has played 56 times for the Yorkshire side since joining in 2020, scoring just three goals, but most of his shining moments came under Marcelo Bielsa.

Joe-Gelhardt-Leeds-United

Palmer told Football League World: I’m surprised he didn’t leave Leeds this summer. Joe Gelhardt finds himself in an unenviable position at the moment. He’s 22, and he’s getting very little game time at Leeds United. I’m surprised he didn’t leave Leeds this summer.

"There were previously last season, the likes of Ipswich Town, who were interested in him. The season before, he went on loan to Championship Sunderland, where he played 18 games and only scored three goals.

"I am surprised that him and his advisors haven’t sorted a move. He needs to play football, and he’s just not getting any game time, and the years are ticking on. I’m sure his advisors now will be looking at it saying, listen, right, if he’s not getting game time, I think by the time we get to the Championship transfer window, they’ll look to get him out, whether it’s on loan or on a permanent deal."

Leeds working to sign left-back with Rutter and Summerville replacements

Leeds United are set to be busy in the final days of the transfer window as they target a whole host of new faces before the August 30th deadline, and now an update on their plans has emerged.

Farke working with a thin Leeds squad

After two games of the Championship season, few would have predicted Daniel Farke's side to be without a win, but after two draws they find themselves down in 16th and four points off the very early pace set by Burnley, Sunderland and Watford.

They also exited the Carabao Cup in the first round, falling to a tame 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in front of a restless Elland Road that threatens to turn sour if results don't pick up soon.

It comes off the back of a difficult summer, which has seen them lose over 10 players and take in more than £100m from sales, only to sign four as replacements.

That includes a trio of stars from last season in the shape of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray, all of whom have been snapped up by Premier League clubs.

It means that as things stand, Leeds have a squad of just 19 players for Farke to choose from. Those 19 consist of three centre-backs to cover two positions, one recognised right back, three midfielders to cover two positions, one attacking midfielder and no recognised left-winger, while there are question marks over several members of the squad.

Farke outlined that he wanted at least four new faces following their draw with West Brom on Saturday. "We would need cover at full-back, in midfield and two offensive positions. Cannot guarantee we will get all of these, but four is roughly what I would like to see."

Now, one report has provided further insight into the 49ers Enterprises' plans for the final days of the window.

Three positions targeted for Leeds United

That comes courtesy of journalist Pete O'Rourke, who claims that Leeds are eyeing up three positions as a matter of urgency.

Writing for Football Insider, he revealed that a left-back is a priority at the club, with backup to Junior Firpo thin on the ground.

Farke is "prioritising a new signing on the left side of his defence", it is claimed, with the Leeds boss looking for a long-term replacement for Firpo, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Additionally, they are "also prioritising deals for a striker and winger to replace the output of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter," who contributed a combined 49 goals and assists last season.

That return will be hard for any new signings to match, but the Yorkshire side have been linked with moves for Sunderland's Jack Clarke and more recently Burnley forward Manuel Benson as they look to try and achieve it.

It will be a crucial few days for Leeds though, with their current squad depth arguably unlikely to be able to even challenge for the play-offs over the course of the season, let alone the automatic promotion spots that their fans expect to be battling for.

Wolves now want to sign "outstanding" new £12m Kilman replacement

After losing Max Kilman earlier this summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want to replace their defender by signing a Champions League centre-back this month.

Wolves transfer news

The Midlands club were on course for a fairly successful summer, before Chelsea emerged to land Pedro Neto's signature. The winger's exit leaves quite the attacking void to fill, and one that Wolves must look to fix before deadline day at the end of the month.

On that front, as Fabrizio Romano reports, Wolves are eyeing a move to sign Carlos Forbs from Ajax. The former Manchester City academy ace would have some shoes to fill, but plenty of time to hit his potential at just 20 years old.

However, before replacing Neto, those in the Midlands must first replace Kilman by signing a Champions League defender. According to GiveMeSport, Wolves now want to sign Oumar Solet from RB Salzburg this month in a deal worth a reported £12m. Given the hefty fee that they have received for Neto, it's safe to assume that Salzburg's valuation is well within Wolves' current range.

Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Oumar Solet.

24-year-old Solet has just one year remaining on his current contract in Austria, hence the lower valuation, and may now find himself on his way to the Premier League. For a bargain price, it would be impressive business if the Frenchman managed to replicate Kilman's quality.

"Outstanding" Solet could turn into bargain buy

Solet certainly has his admirers around European football, with U23 scout Antonio Mango describing the defender's form for Salzburg as "outstanding" last summer. The numbers that the scout presents highlight a player who may eventually become worth far more than £12m in something of a Kilman repeat for Wolves and O'Neil.

What's more, Solet can also play in defensive midfield to potentially hand Gary O'Neil two options in one player. However, if Wolves want to seal a deal for the former Lyon centre-back, they will need to act quickly, given that the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

With both Kilman and Neto to replace, it should be a busy couple of weeks in the Midlands. For O'Neil's sake, Wolves should hope to solve both their problems ahead of their Premier League campaign kick-off against Arsenal next weekend. Far from an easy start, Wolves will have to cause an upset in pursuit of three points on the opening day.

Sky Sports: Ipswich Town now want to sign new £150,000-per-week "monster"

Ipswich Town are interested in signing a new £150,000-per-week "monster", according to an update from Sky Sports.

Ipswich Town’s summer signings

It has been quite the two years at Portman Road under manager Kieran McKenna, who has taken the Tractor Boys from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons.

Back-to-back automatic promotions has resulted in Ipswich now preparing for a top-flight return which begins on Saturday lunchtime against Liverpool. Due to the club’s rise, new signings have been required, as they look to survive in the Premier League, with more than £60m spent on six new players so far.

The latest to arrive was full-back Conor Townsend, who said after joining: “I’m delighted to be here. To play in the Premier League again is a big challenge for me and this kind of opportunity doesn’t come around very often so I jumped at the chance.

“The move came around quite quickly and I’m excited to get started. I have had good conversations with the Manager and everyone speaks very highly of him, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working under him. I played against Ipswich twice last season and both were very tough games. What the team was able to achieve last season was special, so I’m excited to be a part of it now.”

More players could join Townsend before the deadline at the end of the month, with winger Ryan Kent seemingly among the targets. Reports in Turkey have even claimed Ipswich have had a bid accepted, but as we know, a move is yet to go through. Now, a new name has emerged on the club’s transfer wishlist.

Ipswich Town want to sign Kalvin Phillips

According to Sky Sports on Monday lunchtime, Ipswich Town are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

“We’re just hearing that Ipswich are among the clubs interested in Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.”

Phillips has struggled since his move from Leeds United to Man City and went out on loan to West Ham for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

On £150,000-a-week at the Etihad, Phillips has been called a “monster” by Yannick Bolasie and Pep Guardiola did recently hint that the England international has his confidence back.

“He is a central midfielder, but I said many times Kalvin likes to see all the game in front of him. When he is in the middle surrounded by players he struggles a little bit. But he helped us a lot in the last couple of games on tour. I should have seen that before. His confidence is back.”

Now, a move to Portman Road could be on the cards, with Phillip potentially rivalling the likes of Sam Morsy, Jack Taylor and Massimo Luongo.
