'I want to be in the game, pass on what I know to others'

Graham Onions picks the best beard in cricket, talks about his nine-for, and tells us who county cricket’s biggest softie is

Interview by Jack Wilson08-Jan-2015Do you feel you’ve been desperately unlucky to have only played 13 times for England?
I do feel a bit unlucky. At times I was compared to Jimmy Anderson, one of the best bowlers England have ever had and one of the best in the world. It was going to be hard to push him out the side, but for a period of time, Andy Flower and the captains didn’t feel I was what they wanted. I suppose I do feel a bit harshly done by.How do you feel those 13 games went?
My one-day international career was short-lived. I felt I didn’t get a great deal of opportunity. To be honest, I don’t think I was ready to play ODI cricket. Playing Test cricket was the pinnacle of my career, and I feel very, very lucky to have played in the games I did.Do you still harbour hopes of playing for England again?
Without a doubt. The flame is still burning. At the beginning of last year I had a good chance but it didn’t happen. Now I’m probably further down that pecking order but if I start the season well and take wickets in the first six weeks, anything can happen. You twice helped save Test matches for England with the bat. How seriously do you take your batting?
It’s an area that, if you’re a good professional, you need to work on. I’d class myself as a bit more than a tailender, but my shot selection at times has let me down.Tell us about your 9 for 67. Did you think about not running out Luke Fletcher?
I didn’t mean to. I’m such a bad fielder that I tried to miss the stumps and I accidentally hit. What is the plan for when you finish playing cricket?
During 2010 I did my Level 3 coaching qualification, as I didn’t know if I’d play again with my injury. I had back surgery before Christmas and now I’m doing my Level 4, just in case. I want to stay in the game and pass on what I know to others. You used to be a handy badminton player. What happened?
I had to stop and concentrate on playing cricket. I had a few injuries and in the end I had to make the choice. I love playing team sport.Who is the man you would least like to fight in county cricket?
James Taylor. He’s the perfect height to hit me in the goolies. And who is the biggest softie?
I don’t know, help me.Ben Stokes?
I can’t say that. He might go after me. I’ll go with Mitch Claydon. He’s a big lad but a big softie.Who is the laziest trainer at Durham?
Michael Richardson. He’s not really lazy, or a bad trainer, he’s just so laidback.Who is the most naturally gifted player you have played with?
Steve Harmison could naturally bowl so quickly. Nicky Peng was a class act too, and people couldn’t believe he didn’t push on. I’ll go with Ben Stokes. He can bowl 85mph and hit the ball out the park. What is the worst headline you have seen using your name?
I saw one which read: Onions makes someone cry. What’s that all about? That’s just bad headline-writing.Who has the best beard in cricket?
Mo Ali’s is good but I’ll go with Mark Stoneman. If we are on the road for two weeks he’ll let it grow and he’ll look like a caveman. Then, as soon as he gets home, his missus tells him to cut it. He’s proper under the thumb. What is your favourite type of vegetable?
Onions, obviously.Would you rather have legs as long as your fingers or fingers as long as your legs?
I’d be tiny if I had legs as long as my fingers. I’ll go fingers as long as my legs. You are a Newcastle United fan: where are your boys going to finish in the Premier League?
We’ve got a chairman who isn’t ambitious – for whatever reason. It’s a pretty bog-standard answer really: we’ll be just below mid-table.Which cricketer at Durham is the best footballer?
Scott Borthwick likes to think it’s him but he’s not. We play two-touch but he has at least three, he’s so greedy. Mark Wood quietly goes about his business but he’s got skills. What are your superstitions?
I lick the tip of my finger just before I bowl to get a good grip on the ball.

Chennai goes Baila

Plays from the IPL game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai

Sidharth Monga13-Apr-2013The irony
Minutes after Muttiah Muralitharan, a Sri Lankan Tamil, became the first man to officially miss a Chennai game for political reasons (Lasith Malinga officially had a bad back and wouldn’t have played anyway), the PA system at MA Chidambaram Stadium blared Surangani, a legendary Sinhalese Baila song. The message was clear: Sri Lankan players not allowed, but music is okay. To add another twist, Surangani, which has been dubbed in innumerable languages, was originally produced by a Sri Lankan Tamil pop star, AE Manoharan, in Sinhalese. The over
Even when he is not going hell for leather, Chris Gayle – and how bowlers respond to him – is an arresting spectacle in Twenty20s. Dirk Nannes was given the task to bowl to him first up, and he nearly bowled a rare maiden to Gayle. It was almost a perfect over. The first two balls were quick and seamed in and cramped him up and hit him on the pad. The next one was on off, but short of a length, and couldn’t be hit. Then came a full and wide near-yorker followed by a sharp bouncer. The maiden, though, was broken by a leg-side wide, and the compensatory last ball Nannes bowled was a full toss on the pads, which Gayle smashed down the ground for four. The sportsmanship conundrum
In the 10th over of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s innings, Virat Kohli punched one back to the right of Ravindra Jadeja, who bumped into the non-striker AB de Villiers and couldn’t field the ball. Kohli began to take the easy single on offer, but de Villiers was not sure if it was sporting enough to do so, for there wouldn’t have been any single on offer had de Villiers not been in Jadeja’s way. He waited for a couple of seconds, but Kohli – the captain, mind you – was too far down the pitch to be sent back. The single was duly completed. The Trini needle
Dwayne Bravo usually makes it a point to raise his game a notch against fellow Trinidadians in the IPL. It is usually against Kieron Pollard, but today he got to bowl at Ravi Rampaul, and brought out the goods. The brief contest, in the 18th over, featured three plays-and-misses, two wides, and one edge through to the keeper, which brought out special celebrations from Bravo, who broke into a jig.The no-ball that wasn’t
The first ball Daniel Christian, making a comeback into the Bangalore side, bowled was called a no-ball for overstepping. Christian was not happy, and replays showed why: a part of his back heel did indeed land behind the line. He argued with the umpire Asad Rauf, and R Vinay Kumar had to intervene. Umpiring errors and Chennai games continue to go together.Christian, though, got his own back as he bowled a dot on the free hit.

Tamim makes a point

ESPNcricinfo presents the Plays of the Day from the opening game of the Asia Cup, between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Mirpur

Siddarth Ravindran at the Shere Bangla Stadium11-Mar-2012The freak dismissal
There have already been a number of bizarre dismissals and close calls in one-dayers this year. Lahiru Thirimanne reprieved after being Mankaded, the David Hussey obstructing the ball/handling the ball conundrum, and the Sachin Tendulkar run-out after he crashed into the bowler Brett Lee. Add to that the Shahid Afridi dismissal today. In the 40th over, Afridi tamely pushed his first delivery back towards the bowler Shakib Al Hasan. It flew low to Shakib’s right, and though he got both hands to it, he couldn’t collect cleanly. With the ball now dropping to his left, Shakib lunged again, and only managed to juggle it once more, this time onto the non-striker Misbah-ul-Haq. The ball deflected off the batsman’s chest, hit the grill of his helmet and looped up before Shakib finally snaffled it. No batsman will be happy with a golden duck, but to get one in this manner would be particularly galling for Afridi. The celebration
All headlines about Tamim Iqbal this week had been about his controversial axing from the squad, and his subsequent inclusion, a consequence of a tussle between the national selection chief and the board president. If anyone had any doubts over his place in the ODI side, he answered them with an unusually cautious half-century, his first since the series in Zimbabwe in August last year. He reached the milestone with a punch to long-on for a single, and celebrated with a series of fist pumps. That was followed by some vigorous pointing to the dressing room, before he raised his bat specifically at the person he was looking for.The silence
Mohammad Hafeez is another opener coming in to the tournament needing runs. He had a dismal limited-overs series against England, which he ended with a couple of ducks in the Twenty20s. He rediscovered his touch in some style, first top scoring with the bat and then delivering with the ball. The game was evenly poised when he came on in the 29th over. He first dismissed the well-set Tamim – an inside-edge on to the stumps – and then sent back the vice-captain Mahumudullah for a golden duck. Two strikes which found the Shere Bangla’s mute button. The counterattack
Umar Gul was changing the game’s momentum with his late blitz after Pakistan had slumped to 198 for 7. He saved his best for the 49th over, off a fading Mashrafe Mortaza. A slower ball was clubbed over midwicket for four, the follow-up was a full toss down the leg side which was duly put away for another boundary. Mortaza’s radar remained misplaced as he served up a waist high full toss next; it was dispatched for six to bring up Gul’s highest score in one-day internationals. The comeback
Gul had a rough time with the ball early on, with the returning opener Nazimuddin playing some stylish strokes to send him out of the attack. When he returned for his third spell, in the 43rd over, the Shere Bangla was buzzing after Shakib and Nasir Hossain had brought Bangladesh back in the game. The pressure increased even more on Gul as his first ball was dinked to the third man boundary and the next tucked for four to fine leg. 7.2-0-50-0 were his unflattering figures at that stage, but he hit back with his next delivery, bowling Nasir to stall the home side.

Centurion goes subcontinental

The fans turned Supersport Park into an Asian outpost for the day

Tilisha Govender27-Sep-2009Team supported
I went into the game supporting India, like I always do. As the game went on, however, I discovered a renewed appreciation for the Pakistani team – their passion, their focus and their will to win. It was somewhat reminiscent of a successful Pakistani team of the nineties. One thing I’d have changed about the match
Being an Indian supporter, I would have given Dhoni another lifeline with the bat, and brought him in further down the order – after Suresh Raina.Wow moment
As a Team India supporter, for me it was the fall of Imran Nazir’s wicket. A dangerous batsman once he gets going, seeing him caught by Harbhajan Singh off the bowling of Ashish Nehra for just 20 runs was a great relief.Player watch
Sitting in front of the Indian dressing room, I found it amusing how the players were constantly greeted and asked to smile for photos. One Pakistani player was greeted by the same fan every time he ran up and down the stairs. Considering the player was the waterboy for the day, I’m sure this fan said hi about 16 times! I was impressed with the patience of most players. The new generation of Indian stars could learn a thing or two about friendly demeanour from the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.Shot of the day
Although there was not a lot of big hitting in the game, the most memorable shot had to be the massive six scored by Gautam Gambhir off one of the free-hits. It was met with rapturous applause and a sea of Indian flags flying high.Crowd meter
Supersport Park seemed like the Asian subcontinent for the day. Both teams had immense support and there was no shortage of Hindi and Urdu curses and compliments to be heard. Naturally, the likes of Dhoni, Bhajji and Sachin got the biggest cheers, but there were also sporting cheers and encouragement heard for the younger players like Virat Kohli and Umar Akmal. At one point, somewhere around the 26th over, the chanting was more competitive than the cricket on the field.Entertainment
There was lots of Hindi music heard blaring over the PA system. The songs got the crowd pumped up and on their feet. As far as fan behaviour went, the most entertaining thing about the match had to be the middle-aged Indian supporter behind me jumping on his seat and gyrating his hips to the sound of “Jai Ho.” Even the ever-so-serious Indian dressing room could not contain their amusement.ODI v Twenty20
Having been to most of the IPL games in Johannesburg and Pretoria this year, it was a little bit of an adjustment to find myself sitting through 100 overs again. But I think it’s safe to say, after all the enjoyment of the India-Pakistan Champions Trophy contest, that one-dayers are nowhere near becoming obsolete.Banner of the day
There weren’t many banners or posters in my view, as I was not on the grass. I did have a few ideas for a poster of my own however. One would definitely have been: “Team India’s new theme song – Let’s get it on…”Overall
All in all, the game provided action, drama, quality cricket and great sportsmanship. I’m sure most fans left happy, feeling like they had gotten their money’s worth. Aside from the fact that my team lost on the day, it was a fantastic day out.Marks out of 10
I would rate the India-Pakistan game a generous 9. Let’s take away a point for the loss!

Bumrah rested for fourth Test against England

KL Rahul is set to miss the fourth Test as well, while his participation in the final Test in Dharamsala is subject to fitness

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2024Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the fourth Test against England beginning on February 23 in Ranchi. KL Rahul, who missed the second and third Tests, is set to miss the fourth Test as well, while his participation in the final Test in Dharamsala is subject to fitness. The decision to give Bumrah a break has been made keeping his workload in mind – he’s bowled 80.5 overs in the first three Tests – with an IPL season coming up followed closely by the 2024 T20 World Cup beginning on June 1. There was speculation that Bumrah was going to be rested for the third Test in Rajkot but, with the series level at 1-1, he eventually played the fixture.Mukesh Kumar, who was released from the squad for the third Test in Rajkot, has joined the squad in Ranchi. He played the Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Bihar after being released, where he picked up a career-best match haul of 10 for 50 in a massive win for Bengal.ESPNcricinfo LtdIndia now lead the five-match series 2-1 after a record 434-run victory in Rajkot, and they will have to find a way to make up for Bumrah’s absence: he’s the leading wicket-taker in the series with 17 wickets at 13.64 apiece. He was the Player of the Match in India’s win in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, where he took 9 for 91 across both innings.Mukesh, meanwhile, had played the second Test against England when Mohammed Siraj was rested but bowled only 12 overs in Vishakapatnam for figures of 1 for 70. If India play two fast bowlers in Ranchi, the choice for the second quick will be between Mukesh and the uncapped Akash Deep, who was included in the squad for the last three Tests after topping the wicket charts for India A in the recent first-class games against England Lions.Rahul had made scores of 86 and 22 during the defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad – the highest aggregate for India in the match – before missing the second Test with a quadriceps injury. He was included in the squad for the third Test subject to fitness, but was eventually ruled out with a sore knee. The fourth Test between India and England begins this Friday, just four days after the end of the third Test, while there is an eight-day gap between the end of the fourth Test on February 27 and the start of the fifth and final Test on March 7.India squad for fourth Test: Rohit Sharma (capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep

The Championship new boys have completed the signing of Wales international Broadhead, 27, who was in the last year of his contract at Ipswich. The BBC reports that while the initial fee is likely to be lower than £10m, it is believed that figure could be reached in the future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Broadhead becomes Wrexham's ninth new arrival in what has been a busy summer window for Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who are co-chairmen of the club. One of those signings was Lewis O'Brien, who was previously the club's record transfer following his £3m move from Nottingham Forest in July.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The signing of Broadhead, who scored two goals in 18 Premier League appearances in 2024-25, will provide a major boost to the club's hopes of enjoying another successful campaign following last season's promotion from League One. While Ipswich, Southampton and Birmingham City have been widely tipped to compete for promotion to the Premier League in 2025-26, the arrival of Broadhead could see Wrexham's odds shorten with many bookmakers.

Man Utd dealt huge blow in bid to sell Jadon Sancho as Juventus advance on deal to sign winger Francisco Conceicao

Juventus are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement with FC Porto to sign Francisco Conceicao on a permanent basis, which has cast doubt over Manchester United star Jadon Sancho's switch to the Allianz Stadium. The 21-year-old impressed Juventus’ hierarchy during his loan spell and his familiarity with the squad have prompted the Serie A giants to prioritise his acquisition instead of Sancho's.

Juventus closing in on ConceicaoView Sancho as an alternative targetWinger ready to take a pay cut to join JuveFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to the Italians are in advanced talks with Porto to sign Conceicao, and all parties are moving positively towards finalising the deal. Moreover, claimed that although Everton are ready to activate Conceicao's €30 million (£26m/$35m) the player is not keen on a move to Merseyside and "only wants Juventus."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

However, conflicting reports have emerged from Italy suggesting that Juventus may not be forced to choose between the two. According to while Conceicao is closer to a deal, the club is still monitoring Sancho’s situation at United and could move for both players, depending on outgoing transfers and financial flexibility. Nico Gonzalez is expected to receive a substantial offer from the Saudi Pro League, which would free up both space in the squad and funds on the wage bill. And with his departure on the cards, Juventus would have more flexibility to accommodate another high-profile arrival, with Sancho fitting the bill. To further bolster their spending power, Juventus are also engaged in discussions with Sporting CP over the possible sale of midfielder Alberto Costa. The transfer could bring in additional funds to fuel Juventus’ recruitment drive, particularly in their pursuit of Sancho.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sancho’s situation at Old Trafford has reached a tense standstill. The winger, who joined Manchester United in 2021 for £74m ($99m) from Borussia Dortmund, has one year left on his contract. He is reportedly demanding a severance package worth at least €5m (£4m/$6m) to terminate the deal early and enable a move elsewhere. However, Sancho is said to be open to a significant salary reduction in order to facilitate the transfer. Reports suggest he is ready to lower his annual income to around £7m ($9m), approximately £180,000-per-week, a drop of over £120,0000-per-week. Juventus, for their part, have tabled an offer of £5m plus performance-based bonuses, totalling just over £130,000 per week. While the gap is closing, it remains to be seen whether both parties can reach an agreement that satisfies all financial considerations.

In terms of transfer fee, Juventus have reportedly proposed an initial payment of €25m (£21m/$29m) with further bonuses, which falls short of United’s valuation. The Premier League side is nearing the financial ceiling of their summer transfer budget, having spent heavily on the acquisition of Matheus Cunha and with Bryan Mbeumo expected to follow. Offloading Sancho could provide much-needed relief to pursue further additions.
