Man Utd must cash in on 4/10 flop who’s now worth even less than Casemiro

It's a sad thing in football to watch a world-class star decay into inferiority, but this is unfortunately what has happened to Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

The Brazil international has won it all, anchored one of the most incredible midfield triumvirates in the modern game at Real Madrid, partnered with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

He's won five Champions League titles, three La Liga championships. Casemiro has been heralded as a "monster" by former Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane, while last season, at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford hailed the tough-tackling titan as "essential" following triumph over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

But after years of elite-level success, the 32-year-old Casemiro has fallen, closing his second campaign in the Premier League – after transferring from Real Madrid in a jaw-dropping £70m deal in August 2022 – with not so much a whimper as a cry for the end.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro

Casemiro, at the heart of it, is one of the finest midfielders in a generation, with his crunching, commanding displays in the engine room facilitating success as such that most players can only dream of – and even then, such wistful longing is beyond the scope of the many.

As per FBref, the £350k-per-week ace still ranks among the top 8% of centre-midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 2% for tackles and the top 1% for blocks and clearances per 90.

But his performances this season have been lamentable and recent blunders against the likes of Crystal Palace and Arsenal have illuminated just how heavily he has slumped, error-strewn and immobile. He must be sold with haste if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS hope to make significant progress over the coming years.

Casemiro might be bottom of the barrel at the Theatre right now but he's certainly not the only struggle that should be shipped on, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also proving that he is not deserving of a place in the starting 11 at the beginning of a new era.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka's season in numbers

Wan-Bissaka has endured an injury-hit campaign to fit with the narrative at Man United, where the performances on the pitch have been dire but this has been down in large part to the catalogue of setbacks that have stifled Erik ten Hag and his team.

Still, he's chalked up 187 appearances for his side and featured five times as United won the Carabao Cup last term, but injuries and a lack of roundedness have seen him lose his way, no longer the undisputed first choice at right-back.

Manchester United players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka

This season, as per Sofascore, the 26-year-old has completed 209 appearances in the Premier League, and while he has showcased trademark defensive skills, he has not offered the complete style needed to improve Man United.

Completing only 82% of his passes and averaging 0.5 key passes per game, Wan-Bissaka is not confident or crisp enough in possession, also creating only one big chance and completing just 0.8 dribbles each game.

His intrinsic defensive ability is there, ever discernible, but it's only led toward two clean sheets from 20 outings, albeit making two tackles, 1.9 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per match and winning 61% of his 4.2 duels won each appearance.

Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Last time out, during the 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal, the aforementioned Casemiro was the worst of the bunch but his right-back didn't help matters, branded with a 4/10 match rating by the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst, who wrote:

'Was struggling to keep tabs on Trossard before he was blindsided by the Belgian for the opener. Risk-aversive with his passing.'

Diogo Dalot – who has been forced to play on the left amid the injury crisis – is the number one on the right side of the rearguard and Wan-Bissaka's value has deflated to reflect his decreased worth within Ten Hag's squad.

Why Man Utd should sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Man United signed Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace in a whopping £50m deal back in 2019, making him the club's fifth-most expensive player at the time.

He started strong but has withered as his time has gone on and now, despite his age, has seen his market price whittled down considerably.

Indeed, according to CIES Football Observatory's financial-evaluating system, Wan-Bissaka is worth just £13m at present, marking a £37m nosedive – or, in other words, a 74% decrease.

This actually means that he has fallen further than the ageing Casemiro, who still holds a £17m market price despite his withering quality on the field.

He's a crisp passer with sharp defensive tools, ranking among the top 17% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 1% for interceptions and the top 4% for clearances per 90.

But he's ebbed away from his past position as power as one of the finest defensive wide defenders in the business, with Jamie Carragher dubbing him the "best one-on-one full-back in the world" back in 2020, when he was averaging 3.7 tackles and 7.1 successful duels per top-flight fixture, winning 66% of the latter.

His decreased output in this regard is a by-product of injuries and years of inconsistency and toil in a hostile Manchester United environment, and now rumours are bubbling away regarding his imminent departure from Old Trafford.

Wan-Bissaka has not been aided by the continual improvements made by Dalot either, with the Portuguese, aged 25, offering the full package and even remarked to have been Ten Hag's "best player" in 2023/24 by Statman Dave.

Dalot will not wish to relinquish his starting berth any time soon, and given that the Englishman is out of contract at the end of next season, the looming summer might be the right moment to part ways.

Diogo Dalot for Manchester United

For Ratcliffe and Ten Hag, a certain streak of ruthlessness must be displayed to rise from this fallen position and challenge those at the forefront of the Premier League and the continent once again.

Steady, slow steps must be taken, but the right moves must be made and Wan-Bissaka must be sold this summer alongside Casemiro to stem the rot and move toward a new, promising era.

Everton now eyeing move to sign "incredible" star who’s outscored DCL

Having all but secured another season in the Premier League even in the face of point deductions, Everton have turned their attention towards the summer transfer window, where they could finally end their attacking problems.

Everton transfer news

Those at Goodison Park will hope to see their push for safety followed up by some positive news regarding 777 Partners' prospective takeover, which has been awaiting Premier League approval for the majority of the campaign. Then, the Toffees could begin to think about further positives in the summer transfer window.

For now, the headlines are still being owned by the potential departures of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite in two big-money moves to ease Everton's financial concerns ever so slightly. The latter has enjoyed a particularly impressive campaign, attracting the interest of Tottenham Hotspur and even European giants Real Madrid as a result, though it remains to be seen if he decides to depart Everton this summer.

Those sales would at least hand Sean Dyche a summer budget of his own to spend in an attempt to solve a number of problems in his current squad, including finding a reliable goalscorer.

With that said, according to Football Transfers, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Sammie Szmodics, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship and is on course to win the Golden Boot. Scoring 25 Championship goals, Szmodics has even outscored Erling Haaland in league action, albeit in a division below, with the Manchester City star netting 21 goals so far this season.

Sammie Szmodics

After such an impressive year, it remains to be seen just how much Blackburn will demand for their forward, in what could quickly turn into a blow for the Toffees. Once again, 777's takeover could be crucial in pursuit of such a deal.

"Incredible" Szmodics can end Calvert-Lewin frustration

Whilst injuries haven't helped, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has quickly become a point of weakness for Everton, who have been left relying on a forward struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. Szmodics, however, has been handing Blackburn the exact opposite, even as they fight for Championship survival.

What's most concerning about these numbers is Calvert-Lewin's expected goals against the number of goals that he's actually managed so far this season. The numbers indicate that the Everton forward is underperforming significantly, whereas Szmodics is overperforming. And that's the difference in quality that the Blackburn star can provide.

Former Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson knew all about that quality, previously praising Szmodics, saying (via Limerick Live): "After Christmas last season, I think he’s been really good for Rovers and after the summer holiday, he’s been extremely good. He’s also added those goals.

"We always know he can score goals but he’s not used to playing a lot of games at this level first of all, he played with Peterborough but not a lot. The way he’s scoring goals, the confidence he’s playing with and the role he takes as one of the senior players is quite incredible."

U.S. Soccer is reportedly set to announce Pochettino's arrival in the near future, kickstarting a new era for the USMNT. The ex-Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea boss could be in place in time for September friendlies if negotiations with Chelsea go to plan.

Ahead of Milan's Serie A clash with Parma on Saturday, Pulisic was asked about Pochettino's imminent arrival, and the midfielder believes the U.S. can take another step forward under the coach as they look ahead to the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

"It's good news," Pulisic said ahead of Milan's clash with Parma on CBS. "I think it's time for a change, time for us to take another step and really improve as a team. Leading up to this World Cup, we need to find some good results and build some momentum leading up to that moment."

With Pochettino reportedly incoming, the pressure is on the USMNT to really step up on the road to 2026. The World Cup will be a massive moment for American soccer and, particularly after the Copa America, the USMNT can't afford to waste it.

Pochettino's experience and pedigree should give the team a major lift as they prepare for that World Cup, but the coach will have less than two years to prepare this team for the challenges ahead when they host the world's biggest tournament.

Arteta must immediately bench Arsenal star who dropped a 4/10 v Bayern

It has been a tough week for Arsenal Football Club in their hunt for major silverware under Mikel Arteta, and they were dealt two major blows to Premier League and in particular, Champions League hopes.

The Gunners lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa last Sunday, with a defeat leaving them reeling in second place, two points behind Manchester City. However, with six games still to go, they are not out of the title race by any stretch of the imagination.

On Wednesday, however, Arsenal were eliminated from the Champions League by German side Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel’s men overcame Arsenal 1-0 at the Allianz Arena, winning 3-2 on aggregate and sending Arteta’s side home to set up a heavyweight semi-final clash against Real Madrid. It was a devastating result for Arsenal, who will now have full focus on trying to catch Pep Guardiola’s City side in the Premier League.

Arteta will have to ensure his side can climb this stumbling block and rectify the result against Wolves on Saturday. It could well be the case that the Spaniard tinkers with his team ahead of their trip to Molineux, following some disappointing performances in Germany, particularly from one of his star wingers.

Gabriel Martinelli's stats vs Bayern Munich

It was certainly a disappointing performance from Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli on Wednesday. He had a big chance in the first half to make it 1-0 to Arsenal, which could have swung the tie, but his effort was saved by Manuel Neuer.

However, crucially, Martinelli let Bayern goalscorer Joshua Kimmich peel away from him and score an unchallenged header which won Tuchel’s men the game. It was a frustrating error from the wide man and one that ultimately cost Arsenal their place in Europe.

Off the ball, Martinelli struggled, winning just three out of his ten ground duels, according to Sofaccore. Frustratingly, he didn’t touch the ball near enough to have a major impact on the game, which was not his fault, but rather a lack of supply from teammates.

Indeed, only Kai Havertz (26 touches) of any starter on the away side had fewer touches than Martinelli's 32. However, he did look after the ball well, completing 100% of his 13 passes.

Martinelli’s error was enough to warrant a 4/10 past match rating, from Goal.com’s Charles Watts. Whilst he did acknowledge Martinelli “worked so hard all night”, the 22-year-old’s mistake for the goal earned him a disappointing overall rating.

The best replacements for Martinelli

In truth, it has been a frustrating season for Brazil international Martinelli, who has only scored eight goals and registered five assists in 38 games in all competitions so far this season. If Arteta does decide to rotate his side and give another player a chance out wide on Saturday, he isn’t short of options in the squad.

The most likely option Arteta could turn to is Leandro Trossard, who has been impressive so far in 2023/24. The Belgian has scored 13 goals and has two assists this season, but has only played 1,830 minutes, the equivalent of 20 full 90s.

In dropping Martinelli, Arteta could perhaps be worried about losing a threat in one-vs-one scenarios. However, Trossard’s take-on numbers stack up well against Martinelli. The 29-year-old has a take-on success rate of 53.8% per 90 minutes in the Premier League, placing him in the top 14% of positionally similar players, as per Fbref. In comparison, the club's no.11 has a take-on success rate of just 34.3% per 90 minutes, placing him in the 17th percentile, according to Fbref, a stark difference.

Trossard may also offer a better option off the ball, too. In the league this season, he ranks in the top 20% for ball recoveries per 90 minutes, with 5.08. In contrast, Martinelli places in the 38th percentile, making 4.08 ball recoveries per 90 minutes. Against an energetic Wolves side, the Belgian could well prove to be the better option for Arteta out of possession.

Arteta’s other options include Reiss Nelson, whose fleeting appearances this season have yielded just one goal and two assists, none coming in the Premier League. The Gunners boss could also start Emile Smith Rowe, who has registered two Premier League assists this term, including one in a superb performance against Luton recently.

Certainly, Arteta has options should he wish to change things up on the left-hand side. Trossard seems the most apt replacement for Martinelli, and could well get a start at Molineux on Saturday night after a good season so far.

Man Utd keen to trigger "bargain" £35m release clause to sign 23 y/o star

Manchester United are keen to beat two Premier League rivals to a deal for a £35m defender this summer.

Man Utd eyeing new signings

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Red Devils appear to be making plans ahead of the upcoming transfer window, whereas a number of managers have been linked to replace Erik ten Hag.

Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, England boss Gareth Southgate, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil and Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna are just some of the names mentioned who could come in or the Dutchman, who could still win silverware with United for a second successive season in the FA Cup.

In regards to transfer targets, a big £90m move for Benfica youngster Joao Neves has been mooted, whereas a swoop for Port Vale teenager Baylee Dipepa has also been mentioned as Ratcliffe looks to unearth future stars.

Napoli left-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo is one of the latest names to be linked with a move to Manchester, and on the opposite flank, Jeremie Frimpong appears to be wanted.

Man Utd keen on Jeremie Frimpong transfer

According to Football Insider, Man Utd are keen on a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Frimpong this summer. The 23-year-old has a £35m release clause in his contract, and that is seen as a “bargain” by those in England, with top-flight rivals Arsenal and Liverpool also interested in a summer swoop for Frimpong.

Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Since leaving Celtic for Leverkusen in 2021, Frimpong has taken his game to the next level, with his Transfermarkt valuation rocketing from €4m to a career-high €50m during that time.

Capable of playing as a right-back, right-midfielder or right-winger, Frimpong has made 120 appearances for Leverkusen, enjoying his best season in terms of goals and assists during the current campaign.

He’s netted 12 times and provided 11 assists in Xabi Alonso’s side that are still yet to lose in 2023/24, so you can see why United and co see a £35m deal as a “bargain”.

Frimpong was praised by Alonso back in 2022 after the full-back was called up by the Netherlands for the World Cup, with the Spaniard saying: “He deserves this chance to participate in the World Cup. He has a very big impact on our game. He is a very good player, but for me is even a special player. It is logical that Louis Van Gaal gives him the chance because he is a difference player.”

Arsenal and Liverpool are likely to offer Champions League football to Frimpong next season, however, United may not have that luxury, so it could be a difficult deal for INEOS and Ratcliffe to pull off.

Everton say no to UnitedToffees rejected two bidsBranthwaite valued around £70mImago ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

reported on Friday that Everton's failed takeover might cause United to renew their interest in Branthwaite, having seen two bids for the centre-back rejected by the Toffees. However, United have since been told by Everton that nothing has changed; they flat out refuse to sell the 22-year-old unless their valuation is met.

According to , Everton have set Branthwaite's value in the same bracket as the transfer fees that Harry Maguire, Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol commanded in recent years. That's around £70m-£80m ($90m-$103m). United's opening offer for the defender was a reported £35m ($45m) plus £8m ($10m) in add-ons, and they returned with a second bid of £45m ($58m) and £5m ($6m) in add-ons.

WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?

INEOS will continue to improve Erik ten Hag's squad, with potential deals with Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte on the horizon. The Red Devils will soon fly out to the United States for their pre-season tour, where they will face Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool as well as La Liga's Real Betis.

Crystal Palace could have the ideal Wharton partner in 20y/o "real talent"

It's been a long old Premier League season for Crystal Palace fans this year, and it's still only early March.

The South Londoners have picked up some impressive results here and there, such as their 2-2 draw away to Manchester City, but there have been several humbling defeats as well, such as the 5-0 thrashing away to Arsenal.

Unfortunately for Roy Hodgson, there were just too many of the latter for him to keep his position at the club, and he was finally replaced with the highly-rated Oliver Glasner last month.

The Austrian has already picked up four points from his first six, and with new signing Adam Wharton making a positive start to life in the capital, things are starting to look up for the Eagles, especially as the academy could soon gift them the perfect midfield partner for their new signing.

Why Crystal Palace signed Adam Wharton

Despite the poor results on the pitch, the Eagles enjoyed a relatively successful January transfer window, with Colombian right-back Daniel Munoz signing from KRC Genk and Blackburn Rovers gem Wharton following close behind.

While the addition of the attacking full-back is undoubtedly exciting, the young Englishman's arrival garnered the most attention from fans and pundits alike – and for good reason.

Despite being so young, the Blackburn-born maestro has a considerable amount of experience at the senior level, making 51 appearances for Rovers' first team, all before his 20th birthday.

Described as "the English Cambiasso" and as "one of the most interesting young midfielders in England" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Wharton has played the majority of his games in defensive and central midfield, starting 29 games as the former and seven as the latter at Blackburn.

The talented gem has already made four appearances for the south Londoners since making his move, and with Glasner starting him as a defensive midfielder in his two games in charge, it's clear that he will have a big future at Selhurst Park.

However, with the Austrian manager favouring a more progressive and attacking style of play, Wharton will need some fresh legs to play alongside him in the middle of the park, as for as talented as Jefferson Lerma is, he'll turn 30 this year, so it's unlikely he'll be in the midfield for the long-term.

So, it's good news that Palace's excellent academy could be about to provide Glasner with the perfect Wharton partner in the coming seasons.

Why fans should be excited about Jack Wells-Morrison

The academy gem who could form a brilliant partnership with Wharton in the years to come is 20-year-old Englishman, Jack Wells-Morrison.

Born and raised in south London, Wells-Morrison has been a part of the youth set-up since he was six years old and has fought his way through the various youth teams to reach the U21s in the 2021/22 season.

Since then, the "real talent", as reporter Aaron Challoner described him, has captained the team, made 59 appearances, scored nine goals and provided six assists, mainly from a central or defensive midfield role.

He has made it onto the first-team bench five times over the last few years and looks set to go out on loan next season after signing a new deal with the club in November 2023.

It might take a loan or two before the talented youngster can make it into the first team consistently, but by that point, Lerma could well be on his way out, and with central and defensive midfield being his strongest positions, there is no reason why Wells-Morrison couldn't form an excellent partnership with Wharton.

Glasner must axe Crystal Palace dud who earns more than Guehi

By
Jack Salveson Holmes

Ultimately, it may take some time, but Palace should use their superb academy system and help Glasner build a team of players who know what it means to pull on that shirt and who can stick around for the long haul.

Warner returns to form with century as New South Wales extend lead

The opener made just 95 runs in the whole Ashes series but passed that mark in one innings

Andrew McGlashan at the Gabba11-Oct-2019Stumps After a tortuous Ashes, David Warner marked his first innings of the Australia summer with an impressive century against Queensland at the Gabba.Warner made just 95 runs in 10 innings against England and passed that mark with a handsome drive off Mark Steketee shortly before reaching his hundred from 179 balls by tucking a delivery off his hip through square leg. He removed his helmet, raised his bat to the dressing room and brought out a little leap of celebration. His innings, and a stand of 147 with Nick Bertus, put New South Wales into a healthy position with a lead of 135 although Cameron Gannon added to his success of removing Steven Smith for a duck to finish with 5 for 94.Earlier this week, national selector Trevor Hohns had stopped short of saying Warner’s position in the Test was secure regardless of early-season form, but this innings has ended any doubt of him returning at the Gabba next month for the first Test against Pakistan.”Trevor said what he has to do as a selector and we know what our job is, it’s to score runs,” Warner said. “If you aren’t doing than you probably rightfully aren’t going to get picked. You back yourself, I know at home I have a great record and you trust your game plan.He had done well to survive the previous evening against some demanding bowling and continued to fight hard on the second morning. He wasn’t always secure – Gannon gave him a working over from round the wicket with one edge falling just short of third slip – but Warner drove and cut strongly when the chance was offered. This came after only a handful of net sessions since the Ashes.”I honestly picked up a bat three days before we came here,” he said. “I know my game so well in Australia, you can bowl round the wicket in Australia but it’s about adapting to that length. It’s quite hard in England because when they bowl back-of-a-length it still hits the stumps, still making you play forward. I know when I’m on when I’m playing the little back-foot punch and pull. Knowing that, and playing that today, I was very pleased.”When he brought up three figures he had scored almost two-thirds of New South Wales’ runs in a match that had been dominated by the bowlers. He was eventually pinned lbw by some sharp spin from Marnus Labuschagne although Warner did not appear thrilled by the decision.Bertus had been excellent support although had some fortune during his half-century. He was dropped on 1 at second slip by the usually secure Joe Burns – whose other three catches had been tougher – and was missed again on 19 when first slip was slow to react to a top edge which looped over the keeper. When he edged behind off Steketee, Peter Nevill and Sean Abbott extended the lead towards three figures. Gannon claimed his fifth wicket when Mitchell Starc skied to mid-on before the evening session was truncated by rain.

Poch’s next Dele Alli was as good as Palmer in Chelsea’s win vs Villa

To describe Chelsea's win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup last night as a surprise would be a massive understatement.

The Blues came into the game off the back of two drubbings, with rumours circulating about the futures of their star players and manager, so the stage was set for another meltdown.

However, Mauricio Pochettino's side clearly weren't interested in that narrative and put in a seriously impressive performance, bossing the Villans for the entire 90 minutes.

The team were impressive to a man, although Cole Palmer was quieter than usual, and the starter who showed him up could be viewed as Poch's next Dele Alli.

Cole Palmer's game vs Villa in numbers

Now, the first thing to note is that Palmer, like every other Chelsea player on the night, played well against Unai Emery's Claret and Blue.

The former Manchester City gem didn't put a foot wrong all night, but he also didn't do as much to impact the game as some of his teammates, so he flew under the radar somewhat in comparison.

Cole-Palmer-Aston-Villa-Chelsea

Football.london's Bobby Vincent shared this sentiment in his player ratings, giving the Englishman a 7/10 on the night and claiming that he was the 'quietest of the Chelsea attacking players' and that the Blues 'did not really need him at his peak', which is a testament to the overall performance.

It would be hard to disagree with Vincent's assessment when looking at Palmer's numbers from the game, as in his 81 minutes, he took just 29 touches, had two shots on target, completed just one dribble, maintained a passing accuracy of 81%, played one key pass, committed two fouls and won just two of his five ground duels.

The Wythenshawe-born gem's numbers were not dreadful; they just mirrored his underwhelming performance and looked even more so when compared to one of his midfield partners on the night, Conor Gallagher.

Conor Gallagher's game vs Villa in numbers

In a season that has seen the stock of so many Chelsea players crater, Gallagher is one of the few who will end the campaign with a much better reputation than the one he had at the start.

However, if there was one mark against his name this year, it was that he hadn't scored a single goal all season, but that changed in the 11th minute last night, as he got on the end of a pass from Noni Madueke and rifled the ball into the back of the net.

However, Chelsea's "heart", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, deserves praise for more than just the goal, something football.london's Vincent agrees with, as he gave Gallagher an 8/10 rating on the night and described his 'all-round game' as 'brilliant.'

This is clear from his statistics from the game: in his 94 minutes, he took 54 touches, two shots on target, completed two dribbles, maintained a passing accuracy of 90%, played two key passes, and won five of his six ground duels and made two tackles.

The all-action nature of his performances has clearly won over Pochettino, and it's easy to understand why, as there are certainly some similarities between his hard-working nature and the young Dele when he first broke through under the Argentine.

Conor Gallagher could be Pochettino's new Dele Alli

So, in the vacuum of just this season, with Chelsea struggling in the way they are, this might sound like an outrageous take to some, but there is something to this comparison, and it's a comparison that others have made in the past.

For example, this was something noted by The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke back in 2022, with the Tottenham Hotspur writer tweeting: "Watching Conor Gallagher today he's got a bit of Poch-era Dele Alli to him. Great at pressing and winning the ball back."

Now, this was back when the Chelsea man was on loan at Crystal Palace and far more of a goal threat. However, his desire and ability to press teams within an inch of their lives is still just as strong as ever.

If he can rediscover the form in front of goal that led to him racking up eight goals and five assists that season with the Eagles, then this comparison might become more challenging to ignore – with Dele previously scoring 55 goals and registering 52 assists in 194 games under Pochettino's watch.

Furthermore, the pair share the trait of being positionally versatile midfielders, with the former Spurs' gem comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, and occasionally on the left of midfield. In contrast, Gallagher has played in attacking, central and defensive midfield positions for the Blues.

The Cobham graduate might never match the kind of goalscoring abilities of Dele in his first few years, but with the right coaching from Pochettino and a more stable and progressive team around him, there is no apparent reason why he couldn't dramatically improve his attacking output, especially as former Palace manager Patrick Vieira described him as a "managers dream" and that he has "the quality finishing of a Frank Lampard."

Ultimately, there is a long way to go before the Epsom-born dynamo can claim to be Dele 2.0 for Poch, but with his current trajectory, application, and the way the manager talks about him, he could well be in a few years.
