Sunderland “colossus” has been an even better signing than Xhaka & Mukiele

Sunderland extended their unbeaten run against bitter rivals Newcastle United to ten matches in the Premier League after a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

The Black Cats started the run with a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park back in 2012, and added another run to the win thanks to Nick Woltemade’s own goal at the weekend.

On top of it being a satisfying result because of the rivalry, it was also a result that keeps Sunderland in the European chasing pack, as they sit seventh in the top-flight.

Ranking Sunderland's best performers against Newcastle

Sunderland spent £13m to sign Granit Xhaka and £9.5m to sign Nordi Mukiele in the summer to add real pedigree to the squad, as the former had played and won trophies with Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen, and the latter won two Ligue 1 titles with PSG.

Both of them showcased their quality in the win over Newcastle. Mukiele had the beating of Anthony Gordon, as he was not dribbled past a single time, and Xhaka dominated the midfield, winning five of his six duels, per Sofascore.

The Switzerland international’s midfield partner, Noah Sadiki, also caught the eye by winning four of his five duels, as both of Regis Le Bris’ midfielders stepped up to show that they could deal with the physicality of the derby.

As you can see in the table above, both of Sunderland’s centre-backs also rank in our top five Sunderland performers against the Magpies, with Dan Ballard coming out on top.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Northern Irish centre-back, who was given an 8/10 player rating by the Sunderland Echo, produced a colossal display at the back, winning 100% (3/3) of his ground duels and completing eight clearances, per Sofascore, to keep a clean sheet in the derby.

Why Dan Ballard has been a better signing than Granit Xhaka

Ballard’s performance against Newcastle, which led to journalist Andy Sixsmith describing him as a “colossus”, is further evidence that he has been an even better signing than the likes of Xhaka and Mukiele.

As aforementioned, the £22.5m duo were both signed for relatively big money from huge European teams, in Leverkusen and PSG, which meant that they were more or less expected to come in and be key players at Premier League level.

Ballard, on the other hand, joined for a reported fee of just £2m from Arsenal in the summer of 2022, having failed to make a single appearance for the Gunners and having never played above Championship level.

The 26-year-old star has gone on to play 103 matches for Sunderland in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, and his importance to the team in recent years was illustrated by the fact that he was the only starter against Newcastle who was not signed by the club in 2025.

As you can see in the table above, Ballard stands out as, by far, the longest-serving player from the starting line-up on Sunday, which speaks to the incredible journey that he has been on at the Stadium of Light.

The Northern Ireland international, who has scored two goals in 11 Premier League starts this season, has proven that he can produce quality performances, like the one he produced on Sunday, in the top-flight.

Ballard has won 73% of his ground duels and 59% of his aerial duels in the division, per Sofascore, which shows that he has been a dominant force at the back for Sunderland, as he was in the derby against Newcastle.

His exceptional performances in the Premier League, including the one at the weekend, prove that he has been an even better signing than Xhaka and Mukiele, because he was signed for far less money and to be a Championship player, yet has been up there with those two as a top-quality top-flight performer this season.

Anju Jain to take over as Bangladesh women coach

Former India women wicketkeeper Anju Jain is set to take over as head coach of the Bangladesh women team. She will replace former England allrounder David Capel, whose 18-month contract hasn’t been extended.Capel will step down after the ongoing South Africa tour consisting of five ODIs and three T20Is, that serve as preparation as Bangladesh seek to qualify for the Women’s World T20 to be played in the West Indies in November. While the finer details of Jain’s deal are yet to be worked out, it is understood that she will join the national team on a six-month contract and take over as soon as they return from South Africa on May 21. She will be joined by her former India colleague Devika Palshikar and Anuja Dalvi, who are already onboard as assistant coach and physiotherapist respectively.”An opportunity to coach a national team at this stage is quite exciting,” Jain told ESPNcricinfo. “At this moment, the biggest challenge is to help the team qualify for the Women’s World T20 in West Indies. There is talent, but you need to give them games. Our primary responsibility as a coaching group will be to ensure they develop the finer skill sets, and that will come with experience.”The BCB has penciled in a 10-day tour of Ireland in preparation for the eight-team Women’s World T20 Qualifiers to be held in Netherlands in July. Bangladesh, who lost all their four matches at the previous edition in 2016, are the top-ranked side in the group that consists of Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Netherlands, Uganda, Thailand and United Arab Emirates. Two teams from the qualifiers will join the top eight at the World T20.Jain is a Level-B certified BCCI coach and has extensively taken part in exchange programmes with Cricket Australia. Her involvement with Bangladesh will mean she will step down as head coach of Vidarbha women’s team. She previously coached India at the 2012 Women’s World T20 and the 2013 World Cup.Jain is the second India woman cricketer to land the Bangladesh job. Former captain Mamta Maben was previously in-charge of Bangladesh across two stints in 2011 and 2013.

Buttler admits England were 'sloppy' in field

Jos Buttler top-scored for England in the opening ODI at Seddon Park, but two fumbles behind the stumps aided New Zealand’s path to a final-over victory

Jos Buttler top-scored for England in the opening ODI at Seddon Park, but two fumbles behind the stumps aided New Zealand’s path to a final-over victory. Between well-matched sides, Buttler conceded that England need to be better at converting those chances into wickets.Buttler’s first mistake gave Tom Latham a life on 47, a thin edge down the leg side off Adil Rashid, then late in the chase he couldn’t cleanly glove a stumping opportunity that would have dismissed Tim Southee first ball – the delivery after Ross Taylor was stumped – and left Mitchell Santner with the less secure support of Ish Sodhi and Trent Boult to try and secure victory. He also failed to gather a return that would have run out Colin de Grandhomme, but that didn’t prove costly – save for the one extra run – as de Grandhomme fell to Ben Stokes next ball, the moment when the returning allrounder appeared to be winning the match for EnglandButtler, though, wasn’t the only culprit with Jonny Bairstow spilling a chance – albeit a tough one – in the deep off Latham, although again the cost was minimal as Latham fell next over. However, in a game decided with just four balls remaining every run mattered. England’s ground fielding also became a touch ragged during the latter part of the chase, although the dew may have been a factor.”I think we can be sharper in the field,” Buttler said. “I think we were a little bit sloppy for our standards – especially on small grounds like that, defending the boundary and shot-stopping in the ring obviously highlights it because the ball runs away. That’s an area we need to improve. We missed a few chances as well. To try and create wicket-taking opportunities when two good players get in in a partnership in one-day cricket, the half-chances we need to try and take them.”Buttler’s innings – 79 off 65 balls – did not include the late onslaught that is so often a feature of his game, and was witnessed with such impact at Sydney last month. That was largely due to the skill of Southee and Boult in the closing overs, with Buttler saying he felt back to somewhere near his best after a scratchy T20 tri-series.Southee, who Buttler spent two years with at the IPL as part of Mumbai Indians, made smart use of slower deliveries which, coupled with a sluggish pitch, meant the batsman had to do all the work. Southee only erred once to costly effect against Buttler in his final three overs, dragging down the first ball of his last over which was deposited for six, but otherwise didn’t go for more than a single against him at the death.”It’s quite a fun battle having spent a lot of time with someone who knows the strength of your game, but I’ve also tried to read his game and stuff like that,” Buttler said. “But he bowled really well and it’s something I’m very aware of – sides try and take pace off to me.”That’s the name of the limited-overs game: always staying one step ahead.

Italian reporter: Celtic eyeing star with same agent as Valverde

Celtic are "interested" in signing Newcastle United's forgotten man this summer as the Hoops' search for a winger continues, Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has told GIVEMESPORT.

Is Ryan Fraser joining Celtic?

It's been an interesting transfer window for Brendan Rodgers' side so far this summer.

There have been plenty of positives for the Glasgow giants as they've secured the signature of players like Maik Nawrocki, Odin Thiago Holm and several other impressive players whilst convincing star players like Kyogo Furuhasi and Daizen Maeda to sign new deals.

That said, the departure of the dynamic winger and fan favourite Jota to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad came as a serious blow to the team, and while the £25m fee that the Hoops received certainly softened that blow, it was still far from the ideal way for Rodgers to start his second tenure as manager.

Ryan Fraser

With a glaring hole on the leftwing, signing a replacement for the 24-year-old became imperative, and with less than three weeks before the window slams shut, The Bhoys are running out of time to find a replacement.

One player that could be the solution to Rodgers' woes is former Bournemouth star and current Scotland international Fraser.

The 5 foot 4 dynamo, who has the same agent as Federico Valverde, has reportedly been frozen out of the Newcastle team and stripped of his squad number after a bitter falling out with manager Eddie Howe in March of this year, per Football Scotland.

While the £63,000-a-week man might have burnt his bridges with the Magpies, he certainly has the ability required to make an impact north of the border and could make for a brilliant addition to the left wing of Celtic's attack.

And according to journalist Rudy Galetti, a move back to Scotland could be on the cards.

What did Journalist Rudy Galetti say about Ryan Fraser to Celtic?

Galetti confirmed that the Hoops are indeed interested in the Scottish international, and his lack of game time in the Premier League could influence his decision.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "Celtic are interested in Ryan Fraser from Newcastle. That has been confirmed.

"They are looking for a winger. The Scottish player, who doesn't play a central role for the Magpies, is one of the preferred names and profiles."

How old is Ryan Fraser?

Born February 24th, 1994, in Aberdeen, Scotland, the 29-year-old has undoubtedly struggled for game time on Tyneside over the last 12 months, starting just three league games last season.

That's not to say that he wouldn't be an excellent signing for Celtic; however, as when his managers have given him the minutes, he's been a consistently decent top-flight-level footballer.

ryan-fraser-championship-leeds-transfers

In his 128 Premier League starts across his whole career, he has scored 18 goals and provided 31 assists. On top of that, he has averaged a match rating of 6.67 across his entire professional playing career, which shows remarkable consistency from the Scotsman, per WhoScored.

Described as "excellent" for his national team performances by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, if Rodgers can get this deal over the line and coax the best out of Fraser once more, this could be an outstanding piece of business from the Scottish champions.

Bennett, Blundell star for Wellington in low-scoring game

Fast bowler Hamish Bennett took ten wickets, and Tom Blundell took ten catches to go with two unbeaten knocks as Wellington consolidated their position at the top of the table

Wellington wicketkeeper Tom Blundell took ten catches and made unbeaten knocks in both innings of a low-scoring Plunket Shield match against Canterbury, as the hosts completed a five-wicket win on the second day. Blundell, who could be in line to replace the injured BJ Watling in New Zealand’s Test squad against West Indies, was the only player other than his team-mate Michael Papps (44 and 48) to make a score of 40-plus in the match. His unbeaten 43 in the first innings had helped Wellington take the lead after they had bowled Canterbury out for 118 on the back of fast bowler Hamish Bennett’s 5 for 14. Bennett cleaned up the lower order after Logan van Beek had taken the early wickets, including those of Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls. In reply, Wellington had a 75-run opening stand, that was followed by a collapse that saw them fold for 159. Canterbury’s 21-year-old medium-pacer Henry Shipley took his first five-wicket haul.It continued to be a bowler’s match in the second innings, with Bennett taking another five-wicket haul, starting with a wicket first-innings top scorer Chad Bowes off his third ball. A cameo from wicketkeeper Cam Fletcher (33) lifted Canterbury from 61 for 5, but they could only set Wellington 116.Papps’ 48 set the foundation, before Blundell and van Beek finished it off with a sixth-wicket stand of 30. The win gave Wellington 16 points, and they sit on top of the table with four wins in four.

Dyche Could Forget Tete With Everton Swoop For £22m Maverick

With the 2023/24 Premier League campaign almost upon us, Everton manager Sean Dyche is fervently trying to complete his summer transfer activity.

Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma were signed on respective free transfers and loan deals earlier in the window, while a £15m fee for teenage Sporting Lisbon striker Youssef Chermiti has been agreed.

The Toffees have spent the last two seasons fighting against relegation from the top-flight, and Dyche is now looking to assemble a squad capable of climbing the league ladder and cementing a spot further up the division.

What's the latest on Kamaldeen Sulemana to Everton?

According to BBC Sport, the Merseyside outfit are deliberating over lodging a formal offer for either Che Adams or Patson Daka to complete the centre-forward position, though there is also interest in bolstering the wide flanks.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

Adams' Southampton teammate, Kamaldeen Sulemana, is also on the Goodison Park side's shortlist after the club failed to sign him in January; the 21-year-old joined Saints in a £22m plus bonuses transfer, rejecting the Toffees.

How good is Kamaldeen Sulemana?

It's a crucial summer for Everton, and while every season brings a weight of expectation for such a proud club looking to return to prominence, it is simply paramount that the woes of the past few years are cast aside now.

The transfer business has so often been the crux of the outfit's issues, but with the calculated Dyche now at the helm, there will be optimism anew that the club can rectify the past mishaps and finally send the crowd into rapture, and Sulemana could be integral in this regard.

The former Rennes wideman did not quite have the desired effect at St. Mary's Stadium as his side suffered relegation from the Premier League but showcased his devastating ability on the final day of the term as Saints secured an enthralling 4-4 draw against Liverpool.

As per Sofascore, Sulemana earned a match-high rating of 8.7 that day, scoring two goals, succeeding with two of his three dribble attempts, winning six of his nine duels and making one key pass.

kamaldeen-sulemana-southampton-everton-transfer-gossip-dyche-barry-horne

Hailed for his "incredible speed" by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, Sulemana would pump life into the Toffees attack and wreak havoc with his fleet-footed prowess, ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, meaning he is second-to-none when beating defenders with the ball at his feet.

FBref lists Tete as a comparable player to the 18-cap Ghana star, and given that Everton were pursuing the Brazilian whiz both in January and this summer before the player signed on a six-month loan deal with Leicester City (last winter), before agreeing a contract with Turkish giants Galatasaray this week, the type of profile Dyche covets is clear to see.

Tete has been described as a "hurricane" by Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin and ranks among the top 26% of attacking midfielders and wingers for goals and the top 25% for successful take-ons per 90 – given the comparison to Sulemana's metrics, Tete does not appear to boast the same level of progressive expertise as the Southampton dynamo.

Indeed, Sulemana has been described as an “excellent ball-carrier” by The Athletic's Joel Bortey, and if Everton can tidy up their striking position this summer, then supplementing the frontline with this bundle of energy would only increase the energy and flow of the Toffees team.

Man City Looking To Sign "Amazing" 21 y/o Attacker

Manchester City are looking at a move to sign Rennes attacker Jeremy Doku to replace Riyad Mahrez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest Man City transfer news?

Pep Guardiola and those at the Etihad have signed one player so far this summer in midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Croatia international made the move from Premier League rivals Chelsea, and he looks set to fill the void left by Ilkay Gundogan, who left for Barcelona upon the expiration of his City contract.

Another player who looks like he will need to be replaced is Mahrez, with the Algeria international ending his time in Manchester by joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise appears to be a potential target and manager Roy Hodgson has recently admitted clubs are circling around the player.

“We have a fight on our hands to make sure he stays with us. We had two outstanding wingers who were almost the best in the league – Michael Olise on the right side and Wilf on the left. We don’t have Wilf anymore. Clubs are circling around Olise.”

However, it isn’t only Olise on the radar at the Etihad, with an update emerging on Doku. Romano took to Twitter on Tuesday to share a transfer update he’s heard from the Etihad. He stated that Doku is now on the list to replace Mahrez alongside Olise.

“Manchester City now add Jeremy Doku to the list to replace Riyad Mahrez as new winger.

“Alongside Michael Olise (who’s in both City and Chelsea lists), Doku is one of the priority names being considered by Man City.”

Jeremy-doku-de-bruyne-belgium

Who is Jeremy Doku?

Doku is 21 years of age and is primarily a right-winger who can also turn out on the left when required. A 14-cap Belgium international, Doku began his career after coming through the academy at Anderlecht and made 37 senior appearances for the club before joining Rennes in 2020.

Since then, the attacker has turned out on 90 occasions for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 11 times and providing 10 assists, and he appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €28m Transfermarkt valuation.

Doku was hailed as “simply amazing” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2021, and he is seemingly going from strength to strength.

As per FBref, Doku has been compared to Man City star Kevin de Bruyne over the past 12 months and ranks highly in a number of areas compared to midfielders. He places in the top 1% for goals, successful take-ons, shot-creating actions, touches, progressive passes, showing how he could be an extremely shrewd addition to Guardiola’s side, joining the likes of De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish as creative options in the final third.

You can see why Doku has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer following his form in recent times, however, Aston Villa are also keen on the wide attacker, so City may need to make their move relatively soon, or they could miss out on a deal.

Man United: Mark Goldbridge thinks African star has "terms agreed"

Mark Goldbridge believes personal terms between Manchester United and Sofyan Amrabat have been agreed following Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla's update on a potential deal.

Is Amrabat joining United?

Fiorentina were just two games away from winning their first piece of silverware since 1996 last season.

La Viola reached the Coppa Italia and Europa Conference League final after a brilliant campaign under Vincenzo Italiano in which the club battled with some of the best while playing attractive, possession-based football. There was immeasurable heartbreak in Florence as the club narrowly lost both finals 2-1.

One of the key cogs in the seamless Fiorentina machine was Amrabat, the club's holding midfielder. The 26-year-old, who captured minds and hearts at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, was the orchestrator in the centre of the park, starting attacks with his wonderful passing range and press resistance, and breaking up play with his biting tackles and physicality.

Impressive performances always attract attention in football and unsurprisingly Amrabat is now being courted by some of the world's biggest clubs – one of whom is Man United.

Alfredo Pedulla's latest update suggests that a deal is close with Amrabat reportedly having agreed to join the Red Devils, while a fee in the region of €30m including add-ons could persuade La Viola to sell one of their star men.

Reacting to Pedulla's reports on The United Stand YouTube channel, Goldbridge believes that United must have agreed personal terms with Amrabat, paving the way for an exciting deal.

Goldbridge said: "Within a few minutes of me finishing the eight o'clock show last night, this came out: 'Amrabat has chosen Manchester United after contacts today'.

He added: "This to me sounds like personal terms agreed. That is what I interpret that as because we have definitely not agreed a deal with Fiorentina. We might be about just starting that, but we've definitely not agreed the deal with Fiorentina. But this reads like terms agreed."

Despite Pedulla not implicitly stating that Amrabat has agreed terms with Manchester United, the fact that the midfielder has supposedly given the green light to make a switch to Old Trafford is certainly positive news for United supporters.

With Fred and Scott McTominay potentially leaving the club in the near future, midfield reinforcements are essential for Erik ten Hag's United plans.

At 26-years-old and with a wealth of experience at the highest level already, Amrabat would be a player capable of making an immediate impact for the Red Devils and easing the burden on Casemiro's shoulders.

How good is Amrabat?

While traditionally though of as a destroyer in defensive midfield, Amrabat is a player with the capacity to influence the game across the field.

One of his major strengths is his passing ability and, when compared to other midfielder in Serie A last season, the Moroccan ranked in the top seven percent for passes completed per 90 (59.59), the top one percent for total passing distance per 90 (1203 yards) and the top three percent for successful pass accuracy (88.8%).

He also ranked in the top three percent for medium (93.9%) and long (84.1%) passing accuracy, progressive passes per 90 (7.93) and passes into the final third per 90 (7.12).

His defensive abilities are superb as well, something showcased at the World Cup in a team that utilises a low block and defensive strategy. Compared to other midfielders at the tournament per 90, he ranked in the top three percent for tackles in the defensive third (2.05) and 12% for recoveries (7.77).

Amrabat is an incredibly well-rounded central midfielder and, despite not being the most glamourous signing Ten Hag will ever make, the Fiorentina man would undoubtedly improve the Red Devils next season.
