Marnus Labuschagne working on his death batting in ODIs and legspin

Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t been idling away his time since the Covid-19 enforced hiatus in cricket began, instead focusing on how he can improve on what was a spectacular 2019-2020 season. From the moment he was parachuted into the second Ashes Test at Lord’s as Steven Smith’s concussion substitute, Labuschagne barely put a foot wrong, piling up 1249 Test runs at 83.26. That included a home summer against Pakistan and New Zealand which brought four centuries, the last of which was a career-best 215 at the SCG.Shortly before sport came to a grinding halt, Labuschagne earned his first call-up to the ODI side and, unsurprisingly, tasted early success with an emotional maiden century against South Africa in front of extended family in Potchefstroom. His last innings before lockdown was another half-century against New Zealand in Sydney. It will probably be in the ODI format where he resumes action unless he earns a first call-up to the T20I side for the initial part of the England series. While he has been working on all areas of his game, it is elements of one-day cricket where he is eyeing strides, notably his legspin and being able to hit strongly late in an innings.”It doesn’t matter what the format is; you want to get better,” he told reporters in Brisbane. “There are some areas in one-day cricket where I’m continuing to develop: my bowling and making sure I get a bit more consistent, so I become a better option for the skipper in the middle overs and, with my batting at the death – I want to keep working on that. So it’s been nice to have five months to be able to work on those skills, where if I’d been playing cricket you might not have had the opportunity. It’s all about using the time wisely. Hopefully that’s the way it comes across.”Labuschagne, who under normal circumstances would have been in county cricket for Glamorgan during the English season, is the only Queensland player in the 21-man squad for the England tour. He has been able to take advantage of more favourable circumstances in the state to prepare, both from the situation of fewer Covid-19 restrictions and the warm winter climate that allows for outdoor training and practice which included an inter-squad game to the rules of the Hundred.”There have been so many areas that I’ve found I can keep working on in the nets or at home, finding cricket in different ways,” he said. “The lack of games is definitely something I’ve missed but there’s been plenty of other areas and we’ve been lucky here that we’ve been able to train outdoors on turf.”That’s what this pre-season has been about, making sure I prepare, improving those areas I needed to to take my game to the next level. I had a really good summer but you want to be better than that, I want to go one better, so making sure you are using this time wisely.”

Man Utd eyeing "big club manager" who could be their answer to Klopp

Manchester United have endured a season that very few saw coming after Erik ten Hag's successful first campaign in charge of the club last year.

The former Ajax boss looks worryingly out of his depth with just one win to his name in his last five Premier League games, despite playing Burnley, Sheffield United and Bournemouth in that period.

With the recent arrival of new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his ambitious plans to rejuvenate the club, it does feel like just a matter of time until he's replaced as manager, and there have been calls to hire a man who could be the club's own Jürgen Klopp.

Erik ten Hag's season

It really has been a season from hell for the Dutchman this year, and while the extensive injury list at Carrington is far from ideal and certainly hasn't helped, the performances on the pitch have been dreadful.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

The club were dumped out of the League Cup by Newcastle United in November and crashed out of the Champions League with one win, one draw and four defeats to their name, and in the league, the Red Devils are sitting in sixth place, 13 points off fourth, with a goal difference of plus one.

However, while it might not feel like it to the fans, the three-time European Champions have had a fair bit of luck this term, at least defensively.

According to Understat, they have scored 4.94 fewer goals than would be expected based on expected goals, but have conceded a whopping 15.72 fewer – the highest in the league – which translates to an expected points total of just 42.25, which would put them around 15th based on those metrics.

Now, while some of that overperformance can be put down to the talent of United's players, the extreme nature of it is more down to luck, luck that has saved a poor season from Ten Hag becoming a genuinely awful one.

With this in mind, it's not surprising to see so much talk about potential replacements coming in, and according to recent reports, one of the said replacements could be Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who has recently been compared to Klopp by a United legend.

Why Thomas Tuchel could be United's Jürgen Klopp

It might seem like a leap to compare Tuchel to Klopp. After all, the pair now epitomise completely different styles of football – at least in the eyes of English fans – with the former associated with pragmatic and arguably defensive football, while the latter is known for getting his sides to play high-intensity football whenever they can.

However, there are several similarities beyond their ages and nationalities, and former United keeper Peter Schmeichel certainly seems to think so. He described the Bayern boss as having the same "kind of thing that Klopp has" and that as a "big-club manager" he would be able to cope with the pressures of the United job.

That said, what are the similarities between the two Germans?

First, the former Chelsea man has previously followed in the footsteps of the Liverpool boss, taking charge of Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in his wake. Second, the pair are both larger-than-life personalities that seem to command respect wherever they go – or at least for a few years in Tuchel's case – and if the Krumbach-born gaffer does land the job he would also be walking into an English giant in need of rejuvenation, much like Klopp in 2015.

Lastly, while Tuchel is now seen as a defensively-minded coach by fans in England, he has shown in the past that he is more than happy to play full-throttle football, notably with Dortmund, when his side ended the 2015/16 season with a non-penalty expected goals figure of 78.84, which was 8.62 more than Bayern Munich managed.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

With that said, if the 50-year-old is going to replace Ten Hag, how do their managerial records stack up?

Well, in their most recent job, the German comes out ahead, with a points-per-game average of 2.05 to the Dutchman's 1.95. The gap is even more significant when looking at Tuchel's stint at Chelsea, as he averaged 2.08 points-per-game in West London.

Ultimately, while Ten Hag did a good job last season, his poor results this season, combined with his genuinely dreadful underlying numbers, suggest that it's time he moved on.

Therefore, if the Red Devils can get their hands on Tuchel as his replacement, then they should, as while he's not Klopp, he might be the next best thing.

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd could now sign new international defender for £40m

Manchester United could sign a new international defender for just £40m this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd want new defender

The Red Devils and new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe are preparing for their first summer in charge at Old Trafford, with Omar Berrada brought in as chief executive from Manchester City and Jason Wilcox as technical director from Southampton.

Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth looks likely to be the next boardroom arrival as sporting director, with Wilcox and Ashworth planning to overhaul the “spine” of the United squad this summer.

ByCharlie Smith Apr 24, 2024

To do that, a new centre-back is required, with Harry Maguire and holding midfielder Casemiro turning out at the back in United’s FA Cup semi-final with Coventry City on the weekend.

Reports have claimed that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is seen as the “long-term answer” at Old Trafford and is therefore “top target” for United, with the club pushing to agree on an early summer deal with the Toffees. However, there are alternative targets to the Englishman, as claimed by Romano.

Romano makes Todibo to Man Utd claim

Speaking to The United Stand, relayed by United in Focus, Romano listed Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, Juventus’ Gleison Bremer and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba as three options, with the former possibly available for £40m.

“I would keep mentioning Jean-Clair Todibo, a cheaper option. From what I’m hearing it could be something like £40 million. Then there is Gleison Bremer, he has a release clause active in summer 2025 but Juventus are prepared to discuss this summer in case that money comes to the table.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

“I would keep an eye on other potential names for example Edmond Tapsoba is a player they have been scouting for a long time at Bayer Leverkusen, but he is going to be very expensive I think. Manchester United are working on different profiles to decide the player they really want, and the manager is going to be important.”

Todibo has been linked with United previously, with reports suggesting that talks have already been held with the 24-year-old’s representatives. Romano also claimed last year that Todibo would love to move to Old Trafford, and with Ratcliffe’s connections to Nice, a move could be relatively straightforward for the defender who has been tracked for a long time by those in Manchester.

Should a dal materialise, United could be getting a France international who has been a regular for Nice for possibly half the price of what it could cost to sign Branthwaite, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig calling Todibo “high quality” last year.

Mushfiqur Rahim contract-bound to play in Pakistan – BCB chief Nazmul Hassan

“Players have to think about the country, and not just themselves”

Mohammad Isam25-Feb-2020

As a contracted cricketer, Mushfiqur Rahim is expected to accept the BCB’s instructions•AFP

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has told Mushfiqur Rahim that he was contract-bound to travel to Pakistan for the one-off ODI and second Test in Karachi – the last leg of a three-part tour – in April, saying that players must “think about the country, and not about themselves”.”We are expecting that he would go,” Hassan said at a press conference in Mirpur on Tuesday afternoon. “Not only him, but every contracted player should go. Players have to think about the country, and not just themselves. This is what I personally feel.”The country comes before everything else. Everyone should keep it in mind. We will remind them that the contracted players must play as they are told, when selected. It never occurred to me that one has to tell them this, too.”Mushfiqur had refused to travel with the rest of the team for the first two legs, saying in January that his family was worried about his safety, but might not have a say in the matter anymore. It’s a bit of a change of stance on the part of Hassan, who had said before the tour that players could choose whether to travel to Pakistan or not and that the board would respect the players’ decision.”Let me say it simply: we also had fears about security, but now that we have played, and even someone from his family has played [brother-in-law Mahmudullah], will the family only cry about him but not when something happens to Riyad,” Hassan said. “He should hear about Pakistan from Riyad or his other team-mates.”But look, I will not force anyone to go to Pakistan, so he should definitely go if he has spoken to the others.”The ODI is scheduled for April 3, with the Test beginning on April 5. Pakistan had won the first Test, in Rawalpindi, by an innings and 44 runs.

Mohamed Salah is back to his best, but Arsenal need a striker: Winners & losers from preseason clash

It was a tale of two different front lines in Philadelphia as the Merseysiders beat the Gunners

Sometimes football is simple. One team converts their opportunities, and another one doesn't. That's ultimately what separated Liverpool and Arsenal when they faced off in Philadelphia on Wednesday as both teams' tour of the United States continued.

Liverpool had a clinical finisher in Mohamed Salah who could bury a chance at any given moment, while the Gunners could only count on a collection of hesitant forwards. It has long been a criticism of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal that they lack a true centre-forward, but at times it's a bit of a footballing cop-out, an oversimplification of something very complex. In this case, though it was clear as a more deadly Liverpool beat the Gunners, 2-1.

Arne Slot put out something nearing a full-strength side, relying on Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Fabio Carvalho to lead his forward line. And that trio made an impact, while the fresher Gunners trident of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz fell flat.

Liverpool opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Salah running onto Harvey Elliott's through ball before finishing into the bottom corner. Jota could have doubled the lead after 30 minutes, but smashed his shot off the post from close range. Carvalho made no such mistake five minutes later, though, volleying home from close range off a clever flick from Elliott.

Arsenal responded, as Kai Havertz bundled home from close range after a clever Martin Odegaard pass. They had further chances, but hesitance in the final third – and poor decisions inside the box – saw the Gunners rendered relatively toothless.

The rest of the game collapsed into a drab kickabout as the managers introduced fresh legs in the second half. Still, it was the key moments that illuminated it all, Salah and co burying their opportunities, while Arsenal's main men faltered.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Lincoln Financial Field…

Salah was up for it from the first minute on Wednesday. The Egyptian has historically had fun playing against Oleksandr Zinchenko, and seemed to enjoy himself again here. He was in attack mode early on, running at the Ukrainian and asking questions of the Arsenal defence. He was rewarded for his efforts after 13 minutes, sprinting behind the back line before finishing past a helpless goalkeeper – a classic Salah goal.

Slot will be encouraged by what he has seen of his star forward so far. The Egyptian arrived back to pre-season early and looks in fine form. There will undoubtedly be questions about his future beyond the 2024-25 campaign as he enters the final year of his contract, but until further notice, he is a Liverpool player, and looks to be nearing his best once more.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Gabriel Martinelli

If one winger was at his brilliant best, then another endured a showing that looked a lot like his worst. Martinelli, in truth, has struggled for a while now. He never quite hit his usual levels last season, losing his spot in the XI to Leandro Trossard by the end of the campaign.

After a fruitless Copa America slate with Brazil, he was looking to rediscover some of his old self here, but he never really got out of first gear. Conor Bradley had him on straps for most of his time on the pitch, and in his one real decisive moment, Martinelli under-hit a square ball that would have surely seen his team find the net.

Once a crucial cog in this Arsenal machine, he now could be facing a bench role for the Gunners.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Arne Slot

Look, results here really don't matter. In a few months, no one will remember whether Liverpool beat Arsenal at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Those who were at the game – and paid exorbitant prices to be there – might not even remember.

But for managers, these fixtures are key opportunities to try out new tactical systems, get a look at their players, and try to steadily piece together how their XI might look once the season starts in full. And if the first 45 minutes are anything to go by, then Slot might just have something special on his hands here.

His Liverpool team pressed well, were fluid in attack, and took their clear chances when they came. Arsenal put out a stronger side, but Slot's team rather nullified them. The creativity was there, while the defensive effort would have also encouraged the manager. Yes, there's a long way to go, but this was another solid showing from the Dutchman's new iteration of Liverpool.

GettyLOSER: Arsenal's striker options

What are the marginal gains Arsenal really need to win the league this year? For so much of last campaign, they matched Manchester City stride-for-stride, keeping pace with the eventual title winners. What they perhaps lacked, though, was an incisive cutting edge, the kind of player to guarantee 20 league goals from the top of the pitch. Thus far this summer, they have been reluctant to invest in that archetype, instead spending big on a centre-back in Riccardo Calafiori, and, if reports are to be believed, a central midfielder in Mikel Merino.

But on the evidence of this contest – and many last season – the Gunners sorely lack a focal point. The idea here was, presumably, for Havertz to be that guy, as Arsenal routinely knocked long balls to the big German through the middle. But he was rather bullied by the Liverpool centre-backs, and even though he found the net, there wasn't much of a spark to his play.

Football is more complicated than scoring goals, but Arsenal simply have to sign someone who can bang them in if they are to end their title drought.

'Fully committed' Dwayne Bravo comes out of T20I retirement

Makes himself available for selection with T20 World Cup less than a year away

Deivarayan Muthu in Chennai13-Dec-2019Former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo has officially come out of international retirement, making himself available for selection in the West Indies T20I side in the lead-up to their men’s T20 World Cup defence in Australia next year. Bravo, however, confirmed that he didn’t want to play any other format.”I would like to announce my return to international T20s for West Indies,” Bravo told ESPNcricinfo in Chennai. “Once selected I’ll be fully committed to represent the region again in T20 cricket, which I think is exciting for West Indies cricket and fans, with the young talents around.”Bravo had called time on his international career in October 2018, and turned his focus to playing franchise T20 cricket around the world. The 36-year old allrounder has now made a u-turn following drastic changes in the West Indies management. Ricky Skerritt has replaced Dave Cameron as the board president and former T20 World Cup-winning coach Phil Simmons is back in the mix. As part of the revamp, Kieron Pollard had been appointed captain of both the limited-overs teams ahead of the trip to India.ALSO READ: Bravo lives up to ‘champion’ status as Maratha Arabians win T10 titleBravo said that he was impressed by the clarity of thought and transparency in selection from the new management.”They understand and listen, they will have dialogues going back and forth, that’s the difference,” he said. “And that’s why it was so easy for me to make a decision to come back and represent West Indies again. I speak to the captain, coach, the president, director of cricket and chairman of selectors, and I’ve confirmed that I’ll be available for T20I selection.”Board president Skerritt and director of cricket Jimmy Adams both expressed their pleasure at Bravo’s decision.*”Bravo has the performance track record that should never have been lost from the West Indies cricket talent pool,” Skerritt said. “Bravo’s return reminds us what a negative impact politics and pettiness has had on our cricket. The possibility that Bravo, a former West Indies captain, can again be a fierce and formidable allrounder in his maroon colors, is a welcomed possibility.”Adams said: “I am pleased that Dwayne is making himself available for selection for T20 cricket. His considerable experience and proven ability will strengthen the pool of players from which Cricket West Indies will be able to choose their squads whilst also providing increased competition for places.”Bravo’s return to T20I cricket is another step from West Indies towards getting the band back together for their T20I World Cup defence in 2020. More recently, Pollard captained West Indies to their first ODI series victory in five years, against Afghanistan, and then his side challenged a full-strength India side in a three-match T20I series. Batsman Lendl Simmons came out of nowhere and made a match-winning half-century in Thiruvananthapuram to force the series into a decider in Mumbai. It is understood that both allrounder Andre Russell and offspinner Sunil Narine could have been in contention for selection for the India tour had they been fit enough.”If Russell is back, myself, and Narine is back… We don’t know what the Universe Boss is doing but you never know,” Bravo said. “He can also be available. We will love to have him around as he’s a father figure for all of us and we respect him. Having a Chris Gayle in the team is always special, but it’s up to him to make his decision. But, like I said, we’re looking forward to put the squad together. Whenever we put an XI on the field, it will be an XI that people will come to watch.”Dwayne Bravo dances in celebration•CPL T20/Getty ImagesAs one of the seniors in the West Indies set-up, along with captain Pollard, Bravo said his role would be to help ease the pressure on young talents who are finding their feet at the international level. Bravo echoed Pollard’s comments made on the eve of the series opener against India, hoping to create a nurturing environment.”We [seniors] just have to talk to them [the youngsters] and allow them to make their mistakes and allow them to figure out their game,” Bravo said. “Give them the opportunity and let them know that they belong to the system. What used to be the problem in the past is if a player played two-three games and they didn’t perform, he gets dropped.”In these format, you expect players to fail, especially when you’re a top-order player because your role and responsibility is to get the team off to a flier and that takes a lot of risks. You just have to give players opportunities and back them – whether they’re performing or not.”Pollard’s proactive captaincy had been one of the major talking points during the three-match T20I series against India. In Hyderabad, he had deployed twin midwickets against Virat Kohli and when he was leading Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL in the absence of Bravo, his in-your-face captaincy and aggressive approach worked for the franchise.”Yeah, he [Pollard] is definitely one who loves to win,” Bravo said. “The guys respect him a lot because of what he has achieved in cricket. Him and Phil [Simmons] have a very good captain-and-coach relationship and they’re going to lead the team in the direction where it should be. Just happy to do what I can to contribute to building something special.”I’m very close to everyone on this team and I know if I walk in, everyone will be happy. But for me, it’s not about me going back to try to be the person. It’s just me going back thankful for another opportunity to represent the team again and also help nurture these young talented players and give them my experience and knowledge. I will try to assist them in whatever way I can.”Bravo has been troubled by injuries in 2019, having been sidelined from part of the IPL (hamstring) and the entire CPL (broken finger). He, however, returned to action in the T10 league in the UAE and led Maratha Arabians to the title.”Champion is always a champion, know? It was good to win the T10 league with Maratha Arabians – it was my third season and second time as captain,” he said. “To win the trophy for the first time was a great achievement. It’s the end of the year now, so we look forward to 2020.”West Indies’ next T20I assignment is a three-match series against Ireland at home in January next year.

Boost for Unai Emery: Positive injury news from Aston Villa on Pau Torres

Aston Villa's injury problems in the centre-back position have mounted up in recent weeks. First, Ezri Konsa picked up a knee issue in the 5-0 Premier League win over Sheffield United, one that's expected to keep him out until the early part of next month.

Then, to make matters worse, Diego Carlos damaged his hamstring in a training session, and he may not be available again until after the March international break. Unai Emery had already lost Tyrone Mings to a season-ending knee injury back in August.

The Spaniard was probably cursing his luck again when Pau Torres was forced off at half-time in Saturday's 4-2 win over Nottingham Forest, with Calum Chambers replacing him for his first top-flight playing time of the entire season. We've now received an update on Torres' status, and fortunately, it's good news for Villa.

Torres could feature at Luton

According to The Express and Star, Villa are "cautiously optimistic" that Torres will be able to play when they travel to face relegation-threatened Luton Town this weekend.

Torres' availability hasn't been confirmed just yet – he'll have to undergo further assessment later in the week – but it seems he's avoided any serious setback in the midst of Villa's battle for Champions League qualification.

"Barcelona and Real Madrid" claim shows Torres' value

Torres has become a key figure at Villa since his summer arrival from Emery's former club Villarreal, starting 18 of the 22 league games for which he's been available. The manager has been delighted with how the 27-year-old has been able to carry out his instructions.

He said: "Pau Torres is a very good player and his level is high. He is playing with the Spain national team, more or less being consistent. We worked together in Spain and were doing a plan with him.

"He was progressing. Taking the decision to come here and play in the Premier League is more demanding, even in the duels. That is the first objective he has, in how he can improve, is try to be strong when he has to fight with really very good strikers.

"Not only with the ball but when he has to run back and be in contact with the striker’s body. Then it is about trying to adapt quickly in the best qualities he has, trying to adapt and play with the ball. He is doing it very well and in my idea and style I am trying to create here, he is very important.

He added: "If I was the coach at Barcelona and Real Madrid I would want a player like him."

Aston Villa's next Grealish is the “second biggest flop of all time”

The star is now playing his football in Qatar.

ByTom Lever Feb 27, 2024

Emery mentions Torres' qualities in possession there, and they have been crucial to Villa's build-up this season. Nobody who's started a league match for Villa this season has averaged more passes into the final third than his 5.98 per 90, and he also leads the way among defenders for progressive passes (5.54). When he's not playing, he's a dual miss, so it's a relief for Villa that they should be able to count on him in what promises to be a tense run-in.
