The Indian commentator who is now the voice of Afghanistan cricket

Jodhpur’s Devender Kumar does commentary not only in international Afghanistan games but also their domestic fixtures

Daya Sagar13-Sep-2024In 1998, during Desert Storm innings, when a 10-year-old Devender Kumar heard this piece of commentary by Tony Greig on the six Sachin Tendulkar smashed off Michael Kasprowicz, he was dazzled. Greig’s voice attracted him so much that Devender decided commentary would be his career path.”One day I was flicking channels when I heard this piece of commentary on air,” Devender tells ESPNcricinfo on the sidelines of the washed out Afghanistan-New Zealand Test in Greater Noida. “I was attracted to Tony Greig’s voice and the rhythm of his commentary. I felt like this was something special and I should take it up.”After this, I started practising commentary for hours. My father was in the Army and had an analog radio that played both short and medium wave-length radio stations. I used to listen to commentary from all sports, not just cricket, and then repeat this exercise for hours.”This commentary journey, however, was not at all easy for Devender, who hails from Chutarpura, a small village in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He neither spoke English nor had any sports background. Apart from this, he did not know what he had to do to become a commentator. He practised every day by listening to news and commentary on the radio. He loved the three-hour weekly ” programme on the BBC, through which he got to listen to commentators like John Murray and Alan Green on various sports, including football and tennis.Devender Kumar also does commentary on Afghanistan’s domestic games•Special Arrangement”Through this show, I used to get news from sports the world over every Saturday and Sunday,” Devender says. “In the beginning, I couldn’t even understand what they were saying, because I didn’t know English at all. But their way of talking, the rhythm of their voice, all this attracted me a lot.”Gradually, I started reading English newspapers which improved my vocabulary and I could understand what they were saying. Due to this, my interest in sports and commentary increased and now it has become a 24-hour job.”During this time, Devender also did a nursing course after completing school. After the course, he got a job offer in the USA, but he turned it down because he wanted to pursue commentary full-time. This happened in 2006, in the second half of Tendulkar’s career. Devender just had to commentate on at least one Tendulkar games before his retirement. A job in the USA may have stopped him from achieving this dream. To pursue his dream, Devender came to Jaipur from Jodhpur. He felt that after coming to the capital of his state, his path would become easier and within six months he would start commentating in international matches. But the process to the top was a long and arduous one.Devender used to go to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium every day. Whenever he saw any game going on, he would sit there, roll the newspaper as a mic and start commentating. He practised commentary on many sports including cricket, football, tennis, basketball, handball, volleyball, karate, kabaddi and horse polo. While many people liked Devender’s commentary, a lot of them also made fun of him. But he did not care. He was engrossed in his passion. He had to become an international commentator.Devender says the trend continued for the next ten years. He would wake up at 3am and listen to a radio programme called ” to learn English. After this, he would walk to the stadium which was an hour from his house, at 5am, and observe the different games and commentate on them.”This became my daily routine. I didn’t care about Diwali or Holi, summer or rain,” Devender says. “I would go to the stadium and wherever I saw a game taking place, I would start doing my commentary. Some people used to make fun of me, some even called me ‘crazy’, but some people also liked my commentary. I started getting some work because of this.Devender Kumar with Pashto commentators Fazal Rahimi and Sharafuddin Shakir in Kabul•Devendra Kumar”Then people organising tournaments in Jaipur started calling me for commentary and I used to get INR 500 per day in return. Even if I would get work for three or four days, it would be enough to meet my monthly expenses because the rent for the room I lived in was only INR 500 per month. The remaining money was enough to cover my other expenses.”Gradually, Devender began getting work outside of school and local tournaments in , All India Radio and even Doordarshan Jaipur. He also started doing radio dispatches for Ranji Trophy matches held in Jaipur and got commentary gigs for polo matches held in Jaipur for DD Sports. In 2009, when the now-defunct Champions League T20 was held in India, Lalit Modi, the then IPL chairman who was associated with the Rajasthan Cricket Association, saw Devender’s passion for commentary and sent him to Delhi for an internship. There he met Alan Wilkins for the first time and Wilkins became Devender’s mentor. During this time, Devender also met many other commentators and when the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) needed a commentator, one of them suggested Devender’s name to the board. He was signed up and as luck would have it, his first stint was an ODI match between Ireland and Afghanistan on December 5, 2017 in Sharjah.Devender still gets emotional remembering that day. “I couldn’t believe that I was sitting in the commentary box where Tony Greig served Sachin’s Desert Storm to the world,” he says. “It took me an innings to sink it all in and only when I was going for the commentary in the second innings, I felt that a dream of mine had come true. That is when I posted on my social media, ‘I am making my international cricket debut’.”Today, Devender is the voice of Afghanistan cricket. Since 2016, he has done commentary on almost every international match that Afghanistan have been a part of. He has no professional cricketing background but has the experience of commentating in over 100 international matches. Apart from the international games, Devender also does commentary in Afghanistan’s domestic 50-over and T20 tournaments. He travels to Kabul every year for those and is also called the ‘Voice of Kabul’. Devender has now visited Kabul several times and says the city is a “second home” for him.”When I first got the offer to go to Kabul, people were asking me a lot of questions, but I was clear,” he says when asked about the political situation in Afghanistan. “I can go anywhere for my job because I love it immensely. I had no doubts about going to Kabul.”In fact, once there was a blast at the Kabul Stadium during a domestic T20 game [in 2022]. Many people wanted to call the game off and many international players went home overnight. I not only continued to do commentary in the game but also stayed in Kabul till the end of the tournament. I’m an Army man’s son so these things don’t scare me.”After Tendulkar’s retirement in 2013, Devender’s dream of commenting on his batting remained unfulfilled. But he does not want any of his other dreams to remain unfulfilled. Last year during the Men’s ODI World Cup, he ticked off one of those by calling the India vs Afghanistan match for BBC Test Match Special. He now wants to move to other sports and is confident of fulfilling that dream of his as well. This story was originally published in ESPNcricinfo Hindi and can be read here

India's FTP takeaways: marquee five-Test series, more T20Is, fewer ODIs

There is also an extended IPL window from March to May in the ICC’s new men’s FTP for 2023-27

Sidharth Monga17-Aug-2022India, runners-up in the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) that ended in 2021, have a relatively tough draw in the third and fourth WTC cycles, according to the ICC’s new Future Tours Programme for men that runs from 2023 to 2027.In the third WTC cycle, India play away series in South Africa, Australia and the West Indies; and in the 2025-2027 cycle, they will tour New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka as part of the WTC. With most teams being strong at home, away Tests become crucial for WTC points. Two out of three of India’s away opponents in the next two cycles have traditionally been strong at home, although India have won their previous two series in Australia.India’s home opponents in the 2023-25 cycle are Bangladesh, England and New Zealand; and in the 2025-2027 WTC cycle it is Australia, South Africa and West Indies.Related

FTP takeaways: Bangladesh the busiest, fewer ODIs for India, and T20 windows aplenty

IPL window extended; space for Hundred and BBL as well

Full members to play more international cricket in ICC's new FTP cycle

PSL set to go head-to-head with IPL in 2025

India are set to play a total of 141 bilateral international matches in the 2023-27 FTP, behind only Bangladesh (150), West Indies (147) and England (142). India will play 61 bilateral T20Is – the second most after West Indies; 42 bilateral ODIs – the second fewest ahead of South Africa; and 38 Tests – the third most after England and Australia.Having last played a five-Test series against Australia in 1991-92, India will go back to playing five Tests against them, making the Border-Gavaskar Trophy one of three marquee Test series along with The Ashes and India-England contests. India will tour Australia and England once each for five-Test series, and host them as well. The limited-overs matches between these teams – whether home or away – will be played during separate tours. The first five-Test Border-Gavaskar series will take place during the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, when India tour Australia in the summer of 2024-25. Australia then tour India during the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle for five Tests in January-February 2027. India’s five-Test series against England are at home in early 2024 and away in 2025. There are no bilateral series between India and Pakistan scheduled in the FTP.India will also play eight five-match T20I series in the new FTP, which puts them among the busiest T20 international teams in the world. They also have an extended IPL window, during which very little international cricket has been scheduled, in April and May every year between 2023 and 2027.India’s emphasis on T20Is comes at the cost of bilateral ODIs. India will not be playing any bilateral ODI series longer than three matches in the 2023-27 FTP cycle.

Mohammed Shami cracks the IPL code

His longer-format skills haven’t always translated to T20 success, but he’s raised his game to a new level this season

Sidharth Monga23-Oct-2020As a T20 death bowler, Mohammed Shami has his limitations. Unlike Jasprit Bumrah, he has an orthodox action. Unlike Mitchell Starc, he doesn’t bowl left-arm. Unlike Jofra Archer, he doesn’t bowl 150kph. Unlike Kagiso Rabada, his hard lengths tend to skid on because of his height. Unlike Dwayne Bravo, he doesn’t have fancy slower balls or the experience of having bowled in a million T20 leagues. Unlike in ODI cricket, the ball hardly reverses in 20-overs cricket. Shami’s predicament in the shortest format is not too different to Test legend Dale Steyn’s: take away some swing, add some seam, you have Shami. With that little going for him, Shami is still the Kings XI Punjab’s lead bowler. In a way, on the surface, Shami’s shortcomings show in the team’s overall results. In this IPL, one of his better years, Shami has conceded 12.60 per over in the death (last four) overs of innings. That’s the fifth-worst economy rate among those who have bowled at least five overs in that phase. And yet, Shami has been an essential part of the revival of the Kings XI’s campaign, which features wins over the top three sides in their last three games. In the match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Shami contributed with the wicket of AB de Villiers, who had been held back because of the presence of two legspinners in the Kings XI attack. When the Royal Challengers felt the match-ups were right, though, Shami got de Villiers out with a slower short ball.Against the Mumbai Indians, Shami got the big wicket of Hardik Pandya with a hard-length ball in the 16th over, thus limiting the damage at the end of the innings. He conceded just 15 in his last two overs, the 16th and the 19th. And then he returned to bowl a Super Over for the ages with six yorkers to defend just five runs and take the match into the second Super Over, which the Kings XI won.

Against the Delhi Capitals, Shami bowled the 18th and the 20th, conceding just 13 runs, taking out Marcus Stoinis with an attempted yorker and Shimron Hetmyer with a perfect one. The Capitals eventually ended short of a challenging total by ten runs, by the estimation of their captain Shreyas Iyer. It’s not just his economy of late, but also the wickets that Shami has been taking, which has helped take the heat off the other overs. He has taken nine wickets at the death in this IPL, behind only Rabada’s 11. It can be argued Rabada benefits from the pressure created by his excellent bowling unit whereas Shami’s wickets actually buy his colleagues some relief. Let us be wary of over-estimating the worth of wickets at the death, because teams keep on hitting regardless, but you are still better off – even if slightly – bowling to batsmen who are not de Villiers, Pandya, Stoinis or Hetmyer.Shami has turned it around with yorkers. Not even counting the six he nailed in the Super Over against Mumbai Indians, Shami has bowled a higher percentage of yorkers than Bumrah, Archer or Rabada. Only T Natarajan has bowled more yorkers than Shami at the death this IPL. And this is going by the definition of the yorker according to the pitch maps: within two metres of the stumps. Sometimes a batsman is charging at you, and you shorten the length to york him, which then ends up being counted as a slot ball. Shami has a few there that have resulted in dots or singles. The yorker is a risky delivery, which is why it is tried so rarely. The margin for error for someone like Bumrah is greater than that for Shami. The Super Over is a good example, where Bumrah got away with two full-tosses because his action gives you less time to react. Shami had to get each one of his yorkers right.ESPNcricinfo LtdIf you look at overall numbers and not just the death overs, Shami has had an impressive IPL. For starters, he has bowled hardly any easy overs: all but 36 of his deliveries have been bowled in the powerplay or at the death. That is why his economy rate of 8.43 needs to be put in perspective. Let our Smart Stats do it for you. His Smart Economy rate is 7.5; among those who have bowled at least 20 overs in this IPL, only six seamers have done better. Add to it 16 wickets, not one of which is of a tailender. That is why his Smart Wickets tally is greater than Rabada’s; at 18.74, it is only behind Archer’s 18.83.ESPNcricinfo LtdShami has not gone into the off-season and added a new ball or remodelled his action or approach. Perhaps he has practised his yorkers more this year. Perhaps this being the only cricket for a major part of this year has helped him. Perhaps the slower nature of the pitches in the UAE has given him a slightly bigger margin for error, and thus more confidence and clarity, to go for the yorkers. However, it seems the biggest difference is that he has been allowed to take absolute charge of his bowling. You look at KL Rahul, his captain, and you know there is zero micromanagement. Rahul’s interview after that Mumbai match said as much: Shami said he wanted to bowl six yorkers, and Rahul just discussed the fields with him.Shami has responded well to the responsibility. If the Kings XI continue to bat as well as they have in the last three games – especially the chaos that Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran have introduced to the middle overs – Shami and their death bowling remain key to their qualification chances. So far, Shami the death bowler has been the revelation of this IPL, but the test of all these revelations lies in over-exposure. We will know in the coming games, but to carry an attack such as Kings XI’s this far is an achievement that should not be written off.

Permanecem no plantel, aguardaremos as reposições.

Blair Tickner and Zak Foulkes seal tense win to complete 3-0 sweep of England

New Zealand scrambled to a tense two-wicket victory in Wellington to seal a 3-0 sweep of the ODIs after England’s top-order was filleted once again. Jamie Overton slammed 68 off 62 from No. 8 to help England make a game of it but the armchair Ashes critics were given plenty more ammunition by another misfiring display before they hop across the Tasman. It had appeared New Zealand would get the job done in routine fashion, as Daryl Mitchell anchored their chase of 223. But from 188 for 5 they slid to 196 for 8, with Mitchell the eighth man out for 44, edging Sam Curran behind. With more than 10 overs still to be bowled, however, there was time enough for Blair Tickner and Zak Foulkes to tick off the runs required in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand.Related

  • Ravindra's journey to the top: from copying Sachin, to chants of Rachin

Tickner had earlier claimed his second consecutive four-wicket haul after new-ball pair Jacob Duffy and Foulkes had knocked over the England top five inside 10.1 overs.New Zealand’s chase was given a solid start by a 78-run opening stand between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. The run-out of Conway backing up – one of two such dismissals in the innings – triggered a mini-collapse, with three wickets falling in as many overs, but Mitchell once again provided the steady hand in another small chase, following up scores of 78 not out in Mount Maunganui and 56 not out in Hamilton.Conway had replaced Kane Williamson, absent with a groin niggle, and endured some testing moments against Jofra Archer, who regularly touched 90mph/145kph during his opening spell. A checked drive for six over extra cover got him going, while Ravindra eased into gear with a series of boundaries off Brydon Carse. When Archer switched ends for the final powerplay over and saw it disappear for 24, New Zealand were 64 for 0 and coasting. The stand was broken by a moment of fortune for England, with Overton again the catalyst as he attempted to field a drive from Ravindra only to see the ball deflect off his wrist, through his legs and into the non-striker’s stumps with Conway stranded. Ravindra was then bowled through the gate by Curran, before Overton ended Will Young’s unproductive series by having him caught behind off a steepling top edge.Devon Conway took on Jofra Archer•Getty Images

Tom Latham, remarkably, was also run out when failing to get his bat back after Carse this time redirected a Mitchell drive into the stumps at the other end. Adil Rashid, having been held back until the 30th over, then struck with his second ball as Michael Bracewell holed out to deep midwicket with New Zealand still requiring 76.Mitchell Santner struck two fours and two sixes in a breezy knock to bring victory in sight, but England kept chipping away. Santner holed out off Carse, Overton brought one back sharply to castle Nathan Smith, before Mitchell’s push at Curran left New Zealand having to scrap for the last few runs.In a series billed in some quarters as an extension of England’s Ashes warm-ups – as many as seven of this XI could play the first Test in Perth in three weeks’ time – the batting suffered another malfunction. Having already conceded the series, there was to be no revival in fortunes, despite showing fight until the very end at Sky Stadium.Inserted for the third game running, they plunged to 44 for 5 with none of the top four reaching double-figures. Two fifty stands – between Jos Buttler and Curran, then Overton and Carse – helped save face. Overton struck 10 fours and two sixes in his highest List A score, but the target for New Zealand still looked light.England had actually been in a worse position in the first ODI when falling to 33 for 5, only for Harry Brook’s incendiary 135 to give them a similar score to bowl at. Here Brook was caught at second slip looking to defend as England were again found wanting in ideal conditions for seam and swing.Foulkes continued his impressive maiden ODI series by striking with his fourth ball, Jamie Smith feathering a cut behind the ball after almost being bowled by an in-ducker – although it required DRS to detect the edge.Blair Ticker celebrates the wicket of Jos Buttler•Getty Images

Ben Duckett heaved Duffy into the boundary boards for a six in the third over, but Foulkes was at it again in his next, pinning Joe Root with an inswinger. Duckett then toe-ended a swipe off Duffy to mid-on and when Brook nicked a Duffy outswinger, England were 31 for 4 inside the powerplay. It meant that England set a world record for the fewest runs scored by a team’s top four batters (84) in an ODI series, where they batted at least three times.Buttler was lucky to survive another peach from Duffy first ball, while Jacob Bethell almost ran himself out looking for a non-existent single. Bethell became the first England batter into double-figures, but an impetuous slash at the first ball outside the powerplay saw him off, courtesy a flying catch from Mitchell at slip. With Duffy and Foulkes bowling unchanged through the first 14 overs, England had to retrench. Buttler then shifted through the gears against the change bowlers, as he and Curran brought up the fifty stand from 62 balls.Tickner broke through, a combination of pad and inside edge taking the ball on to Curran’s stumps. He then bowled Buttler in more emphatic fashion, nipping a full delivery inside an expansive drive to topple off stump.Overton had got off the mark with a pulled four, and his third scoring shot was a flat six that punched a hole in the low wall around the boundary. Carse joined the counterattack, hitting four towering sixes in 36 off 30 balls before top-edging a swipe at Tickner high into the covers. Archer managed a couple of boundaries before holing out to mid-on.By then Overton was motoring, back-to-back thumps off Tickner helping to raise a run-a-ball half-century – his first in List A cricket, coming off the back of a career-best 46 in the first ODI. England’s last-wicket yielded 36 runs, but again the top-order deficiencies proved decisive.

'The problem Liverpool have got is Florian Wirtz' – Arne Slot told £116m man is standing in way of tactical solution for Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool’s attacking puzzle under Arne Slot has taken a new twist as Dwight Yorke claims £116 million summer signing Florian Wirtz is blocking the club’s best tactical solution. The Manchester United legend believes Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike can replicate his iconic partnership with Andy Cole — but only if Slot is brave enough to play them together.

  • Liverpool struggling for consistency with new look side

Liverpool’s summer rebuild has created a fascinating but complicated tactical dilemma for Slot, with three major attacking signings all vying for prominence. Isak, Ekitike and Wirtz arrived with enormous expectations, but their profiles overlap in ways that have made it difficult for Slot to assemble a cohesive forward line. While Ekitike has adapted quickly, and Isak is still integrating following a disrupted pre-season, Wirtz has struggled to find a consistent rhythm in the Premier League.

The German international has shown flashes of creativity but has also slowed the tempo in key moments, making Liverpool’s attack feel disjointed when all three are on the pitch together. Slot has rotated heavily to avoid overloading certain zones, but the lack of a settled attacking structure has raised questions about how the manager plans to get the most from his forwards. With Liverpool still adjusting to life under a new system, the debate around finding balance in the final third has intensified.

The issue has become even more prominent due to injuries elsewhere in the squad, which have forced Slot to struggle for stability. As a result, the pressure to find a sustainable solution has grown rapidly. Yorke believes the answer is obvious and that Liverpool already possesses the personnel to fix the issue if Slot is willing to take a risk.

Isak and Ekitike could mirror Yorke and Cole's partnership

Yorke believes Liverpool could unlock a devastating partnership if Isak and Ekitike are played together, directly comparing their potential to the legendary duo he formed with Cole. In his exclusive interview with Snabbare, he explained that the key lies in creating the right competitive dynamic within the squad. Yorke said: "You have got to create a healthy atmosphere around the place. If you create a competitive spirit where you feel like you’re competing with friends all on the same team then there’s no hatred or bad feeling there. That’s the first thing."

Yorke went on to discuss how his own rivalry with Cole fuelled their success, adding: "Coley wasn’t hateful of me coming to United. I was coming to challenge him for his position at first because I was the new signing, the new kid on the block, but he accepted that challenge. He didn’t accept that I was a better player than him. He had to believe in his own ability. He was willing to fight, and don’t forget that Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were there as well. The competition was even greater. Coley could have taken the easy option and left the club. He didn’t because he trusted his ability. That’s the second thing."

  • Yorke says Wirtz is a 'problem' for Liverpool and Slot

Yorke also highlighted how tactical balance naturally emerged once he and Cole began to show complementary traits, saying: "On the flip side, I was the expensive new signing but that didn’t guarantee me anything. I had to go and show what I was capable of doing. I think the gaffer got lucky because I wasn’t really a nine. I can play nine but I was more of a link player, I liked to get involved in the play, so it sorted itself out. We had two flying wingers and I could jump into pockets and Coley played as the nine. Liverpool’s players can find a solution for themselves too. That’s the third thing."

Yorke concluded by insisting the partnership could flourish if Slot is willing to try it: "Isak could be the nine. Ekitike can play wide. But you won’t know until Slot is forced into trying it. He might go that way like how Sir Alex fell into what worked for me and Coley." But he also warned of a major obstacle at Anfield, declaring: "The problem Liverpool have got is Florian Wirtz. That might cause a little bit of an issue because of the money he has come in on too. But Slot has to trust himself and trust his instincts on whether Ekitike and Isak can score goals together because they can both score goals as individuals. You’d think together they are only going to be a bigger threat for their opposition."

How will Slot handle his three-pronged situation?

Liverpool face a crucial period in the coming months as Slot continues searching for the most effective structure for his revamped frontline. The manager has shown willingness to experiment but has not yet paired Isak and Ekitike consistently in a system built specifically for two forwards. As pressure grows, Yorke’s comments may amplify calls for Slot to trial the partnership before the season reaches a decisive phase.

Florian Wirtz will remain central to the tactical debate as the German attempts to sharpen his consistency and adapt to the Premier League’s tempo. Liverpool’s staff remain confident that Wirtz will click, but patience will be tested if results fluctuate. For now, Slot must find a way to extract the best from all three players while keeping the squad balanced, competitive and aligned with his long-term tactical vision.

Man City have signed a "magician" who looks like another David Silva

Manchester City have dominated the Premier League over the past 14 years. Even before Pep Guardiola’s historic appointment, the club had risen to the fore, winning the 2011/12 and 2013/14 titles.

But the 54-year-old has taken a good thing and made it immortal. Man City’s dynasty is among the greatest in modern European history.

Now, he’s tasked with fashioning the next phase in the project, with the Citizens having struggled through 2024/25 and ending up empty-handed on the trophy front, save for the Community Shield on the opening day of the year.

A transitional period this may be, but Manchester City are masters of the market. Many clubs have financial strength, but not the wherewithal and expertise to make their ambition count.

So often, City hit the jackpot, and they certainly did with David Silva. If Guardiola’s final chapter is to be an illustrious one, he will hope to craft a new version of the iconic Spaniard.

David Silva's Man City record

15 years ago, in 2010, Manchester City signed Silva from Valencia for a £24m fee. It was second time lucky for England’s new superpower after missing out on the nifty playmaker in 2008.

Despite an impressive start to life in his homeland, Silva arrived in England, regularly benched across the opening weeks of his first season, before finding his feet across the second half of the year.

Humble beginnings led to illustrious success, the kind which few players ever come close to scraping. Silva won so many trophies, but his intelligence, style and silkiness on the ball were among the best the Premier League has seen.

Guardiola, certainly, has overseen few better, calling his countryman “one of the best ever” back in 2019.

He played 436 matches. He scored 77 goals. He supplied 136 assists. Silva won the full gamut in England, and though he had departed before City finally struck gold in the Champions League, their triumph was pillared by the Spaniard’s tireless work across many seasons in Manchester.

With 97 assists in the Premier League, Silva is seventh in the all-time standings. And with Kevin De Bruyne having vacated his throne this summer, it was imperative that a new playmaking force was signed.

So often, Man City strike gold in the transfer market. Might they have done so with their new version of Silva?

Man City's new David Silva

Silva’s dynamism and expertise on the ball helped shift City toward their ball-playing style of play. A glittering career in England was lifted upon Guardiola’s appointment; they were, in many ways, a match made in heaven.

Now, Pep may have landed his next version in Rayan Cherki, who plays in a more advanced and often wider berth than the 2010 World Cup champion is remembered by, but Silva operated across many positions, especially during the earlier phase of his career.

Signed from Lyon in an initial £30.5m deal this summer, French creator Cherki found fame in his homeland, considered among the most exciting talents in the country from an early age and enjoying a prolific final year with Les Gones, posting 13 goals and 21 assists across all competitions.

Like Silva, the “ballon d’Or level talent”, as he has been called by data analyst Ben Mattinson, is an elite close-control operator, with awareness and flair of a similar calibre

Moreover, the 22-year-old is positionally versatile, much like a young Silva, and if he works on his composure and work rate across the deeper phases of play, could be fashioned into a maestro like the former City skipper.

He does, after all, rank among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90, data via FBref, emphasising his potential suitability for the role.

Thigh injuries have limited the Frenchman’s match action to just three matches this season, but he did score off the bench on City’s opening-day thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers, then playing almost an hour against Tottenham Hotspur, creating a big chance and winning five duels.

The fact that the fleet-footed talent has featured 185 times for Lyon and had a meeting with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot this summer, discussing a potential move to Merseyside, emphasises the calibre of player Guardiola has got his hands on.

And given Pep’s track record at elevating stars to elite status, there’s little question Cherki is in the perfect place to take that huge stride forward, having already been recognised by journalist Julien Laurens for being “a magician” when on the ball.

This special star was welcomed to help shape this next era at Manchester City, and it’s perhaps exciting that the club are finding their footing at this early-season stage without Cherki firing on all cylinders, or indeed playing at all.

Man City know they haven’t signed the finished article in Cherki, but a player who has the capacity to become one of the best in the world.

When Man City signed a 24-year-old Silva from Valencia in 2010, they gambled on a talented maestro with potential untapped.

As was so often the case during those early Sheikh Mansour days, the Etihad side got bang for their buck – and much, much more.

While Erling Haaland has stolen the show, this Man City star has been crucial this season.
