Afghanistan made two changes: Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Darwish Rasooli replace AM Ghazanfar Gulbadin and Naib

Mohammed Kudus draws lofty Tottenham comparison as Frank told he has Spurs legend clone

Tottenham winger Mohammed Kudus has seriously impressed since arriving in a £55 million deal from West Ham in the summer window, and he’s now drawing comparisons with a Spurs legend.

Kudus made headlines this summer as the first player to transfer from West Ham to Spurs since Scott Parker in 2011 — effectively ending a 14-year unofficial transfer embargo between the fierce London rivals.

The move generated plenty of buzz, and with it, a weight of expectation that Kudus has so far handled with a blend of flair, work rate and dynamism.

Since then, Kudus has set about proving he belongs at the heart of Tottenham’s rebuild under Thomas Frank.

His first telling contribution on paper came at Leeds, where a deflected low finish from the Ghanaian opened his goal account and delivered the Lilywhites a crucial 2-1 win — all whilst ending their pre-international break curse and the home side’s year-long unbeaten run at Elland Road in the league.

Used primarily as an inverted right-winger, Kudus has routinely tormented full-backs with an outstanding dribble completion rate — quickly becoming the side’s most dangerous attacking outlet.

Kudus has completed more successful take-ons per 90 than any other winger in the Premier League, according to WhoScored, and is currently the division’s fifth-best performer by average match rating.

The former Ajax sensation also has five assists to show from his opening nine Premier League matches, outshining fellow new arrival Xavi Simons, who has struggled to match Kudus’ scintillating form in the final third.

The early signs are that Spurs have acquired a genuine difference-maker, and he’s now drawn a very intriguing comparison with ex-fan favourite Mousa Dembélé, even if the latter played a completely different role.

Supporters look back on Dembele and remember him fondly as a real linchpin of Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield, with the Belgian making nearly 250 appearances before he departed for the now-folded Guangzhou City in China.

Mohammed Kudus draws Mousa Dembele comparison at Tottenham

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham explained exactly why Kudus is a regen of Dembele at Tottenham — specifically talking about his strength on the ball.

Frank has been equally blown away by Kudus since his arrival at N17, calling his one-v-one ability “crazy”.

Like Dembele, Kudus is remarkably difficult to dispossess, with the agility to spin away from challengers and the power to carry the ball through deep midfield areas or wide channels.

The feeling among coaches and analysts is that Kudus could become a more advanced and goal-threatening Dembele, with journalist Alasdair Gold also making that comparison in early October.

The sky appears to be the limit for him right now, and midfielder Joao Palhinha has some stern competition for the ‘best summer signing’ accolade as we slowly approach the halfway point of 25/26.

Immediate concern for Dyche at Nottingham Forest after Marinakis decision

Nottingham Forest have appointed Sean Dyche as their new head coach on a deal until summer 2027.

The 54-year-old has taken over at the City Ground following Ange Postecoglou’s sacking on Saturday. Dyche, who lives in Nottingham and was a trainee at the club, becomes the third first-team boss of the season and will be joined in the dugout by former Forest heroes Ian Woan and Steve Stone.

Dyche had been out of work since leaving Everton at the start of the year. Forest say that the former Burnley manager has “the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement”.

Forest and Evangelos Marinakis were also considering former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and are known admirers of Fulham’s Marco Silva, but the prospect of getting the Portuguese out of Craven Cottage mid-season was deemed too challenging.

The recruitment process, led by global head of football, Edu Gaspar, landed on Dyche and his first game in charge will be Thursday’s Europa League tie with Porto at the City Ground.

Dyche told Nottingham Forest January kitty

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Dyche has been told to work with what he has at Nottingham Forest and won’t be given a big January transfer kitty.

The reporter has claimed from ‘sources that Dyche is unlikely to get a big transfer budget in the January transfer window, and will instead have to work with the players already at the club’.

Forest and Marinakis splashed the cash in the summer, spending just under £200m ahead of their Europa League campaign, so it is understandable to hear of the decision by the owner.

However, Dyche may have been hoping to tinker with his squad in the New Year, but unless he sells one of his Forest stars, it could be a quiet window in what may come as an immediate concern for the new manager.

Have the Lionesses finally found a solution at left-back?! Winners and losers as Taylor Hinds takes chance to impress Sarina Wiegman while Maya Le Tissier states her own case in defence in England's first camp post-Euros

England's first camp since their second successive European Championship triumph was certainly a little up and down. Marred by injuries going into the window, with there already three notable absentees before Sarina Wiegman's squad was announced and four withdrawals after it was revealed, the Lionesses then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brazil in their first game post-Euros, despite playing for over an hour against 10 players, but were able to bounce back on Tuesday against Australia, who also had a player sent off very early on in a rather strange couple of games.

Wiegman would've certainly preferred to have played both of these matches, two of four friendlies England have before being thrown into World Cup qualifiers in the New Year, in an 11v11 format, but that the Lionesses had a numerical advantage in each game for a similar amount of time did at least present a good comparison point. After all, the European champions struggled to carve out chances in that situation against Brazil, despite there also being greater urgency to do so given they were already 2-0 down, but took to the task much more effectively when facing Australia, able to score twice before the end of the first half in a 3-0 win.

Despite choosing a starting line-up with a much more familiar feel in that first game, featuring six starters from the Euro 2025 final and two of England's most regular subs, Wiegman was able to get through a decent amount of experimentation in this camp in the end, too. Three debuts were dished out, all in positions that – for differing reasons – needed those opportunities to be given, and three more players with their caps still in single digits got on the pitch as well.

There were negatives, of course. Such a flurry of injuries, before and during, was never ideal, while the defeat to Brazil did raise concerns. However, Wiegman's immediate reflections on the camp were extremely upbeat. "I really enjoyed this camp," she said on Tuesday. "Everyone was very excited to come back and start a new cycle, but at the same time, celebrate the homecoming and get connected with the fans. We're getting ready for World Cup qualifiers and you want to use these games in the best possible way. We had to adapt many times because we had some injuries before camp, some extra injuries [during]. But, of course, we have a big group, so then other players get opportunities, which is really good for those players and for us, it's good that we can see so many players and try out different things."

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from England's first camp since their Euro 2025 triumph…

    WINNER: Khiara Keating

With neither Khiara Keating or Anna Moorhouse having a cap to their name, it had been difficult to gauge just who was second in the pecking order to Hannah Hampton in the England goalkeeper department since Mary Earps' shock retirement before Euro 2025. This camp, though, gave everyone on the outside the clearest indication yet of what that looks like, as Keating stepped forward to make her senior international debut.

A talented 21-year-old with plenty of raw ability that still needs a bit of polish, Keating is a really exciting prospect for the future, particularly because of the extremely modern style of goalkeeper she has been moulded into by the Manchester City youth set-up. There are still errors in her game, which is no surprise given the way she plays, but Wiegman's decision to give her that first cap – at the Etihad Stadium, of all places – was a clear show of faith in the youngster.

"She is a very talented player and has been with us a while," the England boss said on Saturday, reflecting on how Keating fared in the 2-1 defeat to Brazil. "It was a hard start to the game but I think she dealt really well with it. She didn't get many actions in the second half but it's even harder for a goalkeeper to be there at the moments when she's needed, so that was good. She stayed calm and played out [from the back] when the opportunities were there. I think we can be happy with her debut."

    WINNER: Maya Le Tissier

With 63 minutes gone in this international window, Maya Le Tissier felt quite far away from emerging as a proverbial winner from the England camp. After plenty of debate over her position in the build-up to these games, related to Wiegman seeing the Manchester United captain as a right-back despite her playing consistently well as a centre-back over the last three years, Le Tissier started England's first game against Brazil on the right and did not look a good fit.

While Lucy Bronze, who started that game on the bench as she continues her return to full fitness after injury, is often brilliant at getting extremely high up the pitch and then using her athleticism to track back quickly and effectively, Le Tissier wasn't able to do so in quite the same way, leaving Jess Carter, the right-sided centre-back, very exposed for both of Brazil's goals, which saw them take advantage of the acres of space left on that flank.

However, Bronze entered that game just past the hour and Le Tissier was able to move centrally, where she was much better. Then, in the win over Australia on Tuesday, the 23-year-old actually started as a centre-back and showed everyone just why that is her best position. Having not had much opportunity to play in that role in an England shirt, to get a full game and a good chunk of another there was a real positive for Le Tissier. Does it change how Wiegman sees her? We'll find out in due course.

    LOSER: Michelle Agyemang

By far and away the most disappointing thing to come out of this England camp was the worrying knee injury sustained by Michelle Agyemang in the latter stages of the Australia game. The 19-year-old has been the story of the year for the Lionesses, scoring 41 seconds into her senior international debut back in April to thrust herself right into Wiegman's thinking and secure a surprise spot in the Euro 2025 squad. She made the most of her opportunity, too, scoring crucial goals in the quarter-finals and semi-finals as England retained their European title. Now, though, there's a real chance she is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

It was an innocuous one, an off the ball movement that led to Agyemang laid on the floor in real agony and quickly had everyone in the stadium fearing for the worst as she was stretchered off in the second half. "It was an awful moment," Wiegman said after the game, her body language and demeanour matching the tone. "It doesn't look good. We don't know [the extent] yet but I'm not very positive about what I've seen."

It would be a devastating thing for Agyemang to be out for a significant period given how productive and incredible her past six months have been. The 19-year-old has been continuing her development with another good loan spell at Brighton, too, but the concern is that she will now have to focus her attention on a totally different, and incredibly difficult, challenge.

    WINNER: Lucia Kendall

Asked about finding the balance with her experimentation in these friendlies after the Brazil game, Wiegman said something to suggest that, while she would make changes against Australia, it may be unlikely to see much of any of the newest faces on camp. "We brought players into the squad that are in our environment for the first time," she noted. "So let's see how they adapt to the situation." However, the star of the show on Tuesday night was a player who was making her debut, one who was in the Lionesses' squad for the very first time: Lucia Kendall.

Completing 50 of her 51 attempted passes, including five key passes, one of the most impressive things about Kendall's first outing as a senior England player was the confidence she exuded, which led to her demanding the ball constantly, with there no sign that she was overwhelmed by the occasion. Her comments to after the game reinforced that idea. "I felt at home," the 21-year-old said.

It's an interesting development when it comes to England's squad depth. The Lionesses have long lacked options in the deeper midfield roles, with there little in the way of cover behind Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway. However, Kendall's excellent debut in Stanway's No.8 role shows she could help provide a solution moving forward.

Liverpool in race to sign £168k-p/w Bayern contract rebel who Konate knows

Attempting to solve their centre-back problem, Liverpool have now reportedly joined the race to sign a defensive addition who already knows Ibrahima Konate well.

Leoni injury hands Liverpool fresh problem

Despite spending over £400m in the summer, Liverpool failed to address their centre-back problem. The Reds went all in on Marc Guehi, only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug on his Anfield move in the final hours of deadline day and leave Arne Slot without the added defender that he so desperately wanted.

Without Guehi, Liverpool were left with Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Now, on paper, that should have been enough to ease any worries, but Leoni’s ACL injury has since reignited those concerns. Set to be without the 18-year-old for the majority of the campaign, the Reds have just three senior centre-backs to choose from, with one of them being the injury-prone Gomez.

It’s a problem that Anfield chiefs could solve in the January transfer window and reports are already suggesting that any move for Guehi could be accelerated as a result.

According to Sky Sports, there is “acceptance” that the England international’s time at the club is coming to an end – be it in January or when his contract expires next summer. The big question is whether Liverpool remain front of the queue for his signature.

The Liverpool legend has had his say…

Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in Guehi, which could see the Reds suffer defeat against a familiar foe in the transfer market. Alas, if that does prove to be the case, it seems as though those at Anfield already have a backup plan in mind.

Liverpool join race to sign Upamecano

As reported by BILD, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Dayot Upamecano, with his £168,000-a-week Bayern Munich contract set to expire next summer. The Frenchman, who formed an impressive partnership next to Konate at RB Leipzig many moons ago, is on course to become a free agent and potentially hand the Reds an undeniable bargain as a result.

It’s set to be the summer of the contract rebels. Guehi looks almost certain to leave Palace either in January or as a free agent, whilst Upamecano could follow suit and Liverpool have their own contract issues with Konate.

The France international is yet to put pen to paper at Anfield and may yet join Trent Alexander-Arnold in Spain as a free agent amid interest from Real Madrid. It’s a move that would deal Liverpool another blow, but one that would also open the door for Upamecano.

Dubbed a “fantastic player” by France teammate Lucas Hernandez, last season’s numbers suggest that Liverpool wouldn’t necessarily be getting a downgrade on Konate in Upamecano. In fact, the Bayern star even outperformed his former Leipzig partner in a number of departments.

Chelsea player ratings vs Brighton: Another red card fiasco – Trevoh Chalobah's moment of madness, Malo Gusto's catastrophic cameo sees hopeless Blues throw it all away

Chelsea capitulated in the second half against Brighton as Trevoh Chalobah was sent off and the visitors struck three times to claim a shock 3-1 win. Enzo Fernandez had given the Blues the lead but Danny Welbeck scored twice, with Maxim De Cuyper also on target, as the Blues fell apart and lost more ground in their quest to challenge at the Premier League's summit.

Enzo Maresca's side made a fast start to the game and after Bart Verbruggen made two smart saves to deny both Fernandez and Reece James, he was powerless to prevent the opening goal. A delicious through ball from Moises Caicedo set James on his way, with the Blues skipper crossing for Fernandez to nod home.

Then came the moment that changed everything as, early on in the second half, a hopeless stray pass from Andrey Santos gave the ball to Diego Gomez, who raced through on goal before being brought down by Chalobah. A VAR review followed, with Simon Hooper eventually issuing a red card to the England international.

It went from bad to worse thereafter, with Brighton's pressure eventually telling. Welbeck, who had already stabbed a half-volley inches wide, powered a header home from close range before De Cuyper nodded past Robert Sanchez in stoppage time to make it 2-1. Former Manchester United striker Welbeck still had time to loop the ball high into the net for his second, and the Seagulls' third, in the final seconds, piling on the misery for Marseca on what turned out to be a complete nightmare of an afternoon for the Italian and his team.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Stamford Bridge…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Robert Sanchez (6/10):

Made amends for last weekend's horror show at Old Trafford as he dealt with looping crosses, tried to instigate quick counter-attacks and intelligently came off his line to halt promising Brighton attacks. Would've been at least one or two more goals if it wasn't for him.

    Reece James (7/10):

An assured display that saw him gallop forward and claim the assist for Fernandez's opener, as well as defending resolutely. Encouraging that he managed to play on despite appearing to twist his ankle, too, given all his previous injury issues.

    Trevoh Chalobah (2/10):

His crazy decision to attempt to make a challenge as Diego Gomez raced through on goal led to a tangle of legs and the inevitable red card that changed everything. Awful.

    Jorrel Hato (5/10):

Doubled up with Cucurella to deal with the considerable threat of Minteh and had to be even more alert after Chalobah's red. Taken off straight after Welbeck scored his first having gone missing in the middle.

    Marc Cucurella (5/10):

Had a difficult assignment up against the pacey Minteh but stuck to his task and limited the Brighton winger's threat. A bit too fired up against his former team, though, resulting in a rash booking in a game where Chelsea needed calm heads.

    Midfield

    Andrey Santos (3/10):

Ruined his day with the clumsy touch and wayward pass that inadvertently set Brighton away and led to Chalobah's red card. Hooked immediately after.

    Moises Caicedo (7/10):

Consistently snuffed out Brighton attacks and his wonderful ball through sent James in behind for Chelsea's first goal. Life became more difficult for him after the Chalobah red, though.

    Enzo Fernandez (7/10):

His bright start to the game was rewarded with a goal and he must have covered every blade of grass over the 90 minutes. The capitulation certainly wasn't down to him.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Attack

    Estevao (7/10):

Livewire. Shades of Eden Hazard with his silky touches and jinking runs, albeit there was no end product today. Sacrificed for Gusto as Maresca looked to shut up shop and hold onto the lead, which obviously didn't work.

    Joao Pedro (5/10):

Played the No.9 role well in the first half as he dropped deep and linked attacks but wasn't really his day in front of goal as his team-mates failed to create any big chances for him.

    Pedro Neto (4/10):

So pleasing on the eye when he gets his head down and drives forward but there was a frustrating lack of end product that Blues fans will be all too familiar with. Replaced after the equaliser.

    Subs & Manager

    Josh Acheampong (3/10):

Brought on to fill the hole at centre-back after Chalobah's red card and should've got much tighter to Welbeck for the equaliser before his mistake then led to the third goal.

    Malo Gusto (3/10):

Came on midway through the second half and frustrated the Stamford Bridge punters with his lack of invention before failing to stop the cross that led to Welbeck's goal. Might've given away a penalty, too, for a reckless high boot. A woeful cameo.

    Benoit Badiashile (N/A):

Replaced Hato for the final 10 minutes and scrapped with Lewis Dunk as a number of Chelsea players lost their heads.

    Romeo Lavia (N/A):

On for Pedro Neto as Maresca sensed the danger of a possible Brighton winner, which inevitably came.

    Enzo Maresca (3/10):

What a nightmare. Everything looked to be going according to plan until Chalobah's red card and he clearly didn't have the answers as Brighton turned the screw. If anything, the introductions of Acheampong and Gusto made things a lot worse.

Wrexham told they will reach Premier League in 'two or three years' as Tom Brady & Birmingham mimic model of 'OGs' Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney

Wrexham have been told that they will reach the Premier League in "two or three years", with Tom Brady and Birmingham considered to be mimicking the model drawn up in North Wales by "OGs" Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The Red Dragons have enjoyed a historic run of three successive promotions, and Ben Foster believes they will be playing top-flight football at some point in the near future.

Hollywood co-owners have overseen record run of promotions

Ex-England international goalkeeper Foster helped to make Wrexham upwardly mobile when coming out of retirement to form part of their history-making National League title triumph. He has watched on from afar as Phil Parkinson’s side have made light work of Leagues Two and One.

They are now just one step away from the big time, with Reynolds and McElhenney having never hidden their desire to position Wrexham among the elite. A slow start was made to the 2025-26 campaign, leading to the odd question being asked of Parkinson’s future, but Foster is confident that the Red Dragons will continue their meteoric rise – providing more drama for the club's documentary series in the process.

AdvertisementGettyPremier League prediction: When will Wrexham reach top-flight?

Foster – speaking with on the podcast, in partnership with BOYLE Sports – said of Wrexham’s big ambition: "They’ll be fine. They’ve signed some really good players and Championship-proven players. They won at the weekend, a great win, so I think they’ll be fine, they’ll get into a little rhythm and even come January, they’ll give it another go. It won’t be long, until Wrexham are in the Premier League, I promise you. I’m going to give it two or three years, not even as far as five years, it will be two or three years."

The success enjoyed by Reynolds and McElhenney has helped to entice more A-list investors to British football, with NFL legend Brady among them. The seven-time Super Bowl winner owns a minority stake in Birmingham – who boast similar dreams to Wrexham.

Foster, who enjoyed rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars in North Wales, added: "The attention they’re bringing is more valuable than just finances. They’re the OG’s, but their model is very different. I think Tom Brady is doing it in a very similar way at Birmingham. The first one to mark it was Wrexham with the documentary. I think they’ve brought in a different audience to the game, but it’s still a football audience.

"We went on a pre-season tour in America before the League Two season, and we were playing games at a 70,000 seater university stadium, and it was half red for Wrexham, half blue for Chelsea. We played against Man United, and it was all Wrexham fans. They’re mad for it. Because of the Hollywood story, there was a National League game live on TNT, and it was the same day Arsenal were playing somebody, and the viewing figures for this game in America were higher than the Premier League game. It’s ridiculous."

Reynolds & Ted Lasso: Celebrity investor trend

Ex-England manager Sam Allardyce added on the trend started by a stunning takeover that was completed in 2021: "I think they’ve created a mass infiltration of Americans buying football clubs. There are nearly 50 per cent of American-owned clubs across all leagues, apparently. I think Ted Lasso has a lot to do with it as well. They love Ted Lasso!"

Reynolds and McElhenney remain fully committed to their project at Wrexham, with Foster revealing that a certain Deadpool actor has jerseys from iconic matches hung up in the home that he shares with wife Blake Lively and their four children. Foster said of Reynolds: "He sent me a picture about three weeks ago, the shirt’s in a room in his house. He sent a selfie, and the shirt is in a frame on the wall behind him. He still keeps in touch with all the lads; it was out of the blue and out of nowhere."
